Basic System Operation

The system consists of:

o o

o o

PATS Control Module -Communicates with the PATS Transceiver to verify key code thru two signal wires (Tx and Rx). -Enables Starter motor if valid PATS key (if Starter Interrupt present). -Communicates with PCM to enable fuel pump/injectors thru Vehicle Communication Network. SecuriLock Ignition Key(s) -Contains battery less electronics and a unique key code that is programmed to a vehicle. PATS Transceiver -Mounted on the ignition lock cylinder housing. -Energizes ignition key electronics thru circular antenna. -Receives data from the PATS Control Module to request the key code thru the Tx signal. -Receives key code and sends it to the PATS Control Module thru the Rx signal. -Can be replaced without any reprogramming. Powertrain Control Module -Communicates with the PATS Control Module to validate the ignition key. -Enables fuel pump/injectors if a valid PATS key. "Theft" Lamp or LED Indicator -Ignition in OFF Indicator flashes every two seconds to act as a visual theft deterrent (on some vehicles). -Ignition in RUN or START Normal Operation: Indicator on for two or three seconds (depending on system type), and then off (PATS prove out). System Fault: Indicator on briefly, and then flashes rapidly or on solid for one minute. J1850/SCP or J2284/CAN Vehicle Communication Network and Data Link Connector Starter Relay (on some vehicles) Note: the PATS Control Module functions can be incorporated within various modules, depending on system type. For example, PATS can be in a standalone PATS Control Module or be part of the HEC (Hybrid Electronic Cluster), VIC (Virtual Image Cluster), SCIL (Steering Column Ignition/Lighting) module, Instrument Cluster Module (ICM), or PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

After being energized, the PATS Control Module requests the ignition key code thru the PATS Transceiver (Tx).

The SecuriLock key transmits the ignition key code to the PATS Transceiver, which then sends it to the PATS Control Module (Rx). The PATS Control Module compares the ignition key code to the ignition key codes stored in non-volatile memory. The PATS Control Module transmits a signal to the PCM to enable or disable the fuel pump and injectors (and ground the starter relay on some vehicles). The PATS Control Modules flashes the "Theft" lamp to show system prove out and/or operating status. SecuriLock Keys contain a radio frequency transponder that is critical to proper PATS operation. Qualified keys are available from Rotunda, Ilco, Strattec, Curtis, Huf and Valeo. Only Ford Rotunda keys are currently qualified for the 2000/1 Taurus/Sable, 2001 Windstar, 2001 Explorer Sport and Sport Trac, 2001 Ranger, 2001 Escape, and 2002 Explorer.
