Alonzo Ramírez Library Wichanzao

Presbyterian Church

Dear
Friends:

I
am
writing
to
you
on
behalf
of
the
Alonzo
Ramírez
Public
Library,
a
project
of
the
Wichanzao
Presbyterian
Church
in

Trujillo,
Peru.

I
believe
that
we
can
use
your
help
in
Peru!

In
May
2009,
Wichanzao
Presbyterian
Church
was
blessed
with
the
gift
of
a
small,
one‐room
library.

It
serves
as
a

community
gathering
place
where
patrons
can
read,
borrow
books,
play
chess,
learn
English,
and
receive
homework

assistance.

As
the
only
public
library
in
a
community
of
thousands,
our
library
provides
the
sole
window
to
a
better
future

for
many
children
and
adults.

To
pre‐empt
the
opening
of
our
school
in
March
2010,
we
are
currently
seeking
books
for
our

library.

Most
of
our
current
books
are
from
local
donors
and
are
outdated
or
in
bad
condition.

I
am
writing
to
request

donations
of
books
or
funds
for
the
library.

Wichanzao
is
an
area
on
the
outskirts
of
Peru’s
third
largest
city,
Trujillo.

It
is
one
of
the
poorest
sections
of
Trujillo,
with
an

average
household
income
of
less
than
$170
per
month.

This
often
supports
a
more
than
six‐member,
single‐parent

household,
allowing
for
almost
no
expendable
income.

Though
most
of
the
people
of
Wichanzao
are
hard‐working,
there

are
very
few
resources
available
to
help
them
make
tangible
differences
in
their
lives.

One
of
the
most
powerful
tools
to

fight
poverty
is
the
opportunity
for
education
through
schools
and
libraries.

However,
the
library
does
not
have
enough

books
to
provide
adequate
access
to
all
the
information
for
which
the
community
thirsts.

This
is
where
you
come
in.

We
currently
have
American
volunteers
who
teach
English
classes
to
students
from
ages
5‐60.

They
are
in
need
of
simple

English
picture
or
chapter
books
for
a
pre‐kindergarten
to
elementary
reading
level.

We
are
also
in
need
of
any
Spanish‐
language
books
available
for
donation.

As
ten‐year
old
Gustavo,
who
wants
to
be
a
scientist
when
he
grows
up,
says,
“I
like
the
library
because
I
can
learn
to
read

and
because
I
can
learn
about
things
that
I
don’t
know
already.”

Thank
you
for
considering
our
request
to
help
Gustavo
and
thousands
of
others.

Please
support
us
by
asking
your
church,

youth
group,
or
school
organization
to
host
a
fund‐raiser
or
book
drive
to
help
those
in
need
in
Trujillo!

If
you
have
any

questions
or
need
further
information,
please
feel
free
to
contact
me.

Thanks
and
sincerely,
