HP StorageWorks 2000 Family Modular Smart Array SFP transceiver module replacement instructions

About this document

This document details procedures for replacing a failed small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver module in an HP StorageWorks 2000 Family Modular Smart Array. NOTE: Make sure you obtain the latest version of these instructions from http://www.hp.com/go/msa. Select MSA SAN Arrays, select your product, and go to Support.

Before you begin

CAUTION: SFPs that have been dropped can be damaged. Problems resulting from a dropped SFP include intermittent errors and no port link. To prevent possible loss of access to data, be sure to remove the correct cable and SPF. Mishandling fiber-optic cables can degrade performance. Do not fold, pinch, or step on fiber-optic cables. Do not bend the fiber-optic cables tighter than a 2-inch radius. Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Use proper anti-static protection: Keep the replacement component in the ESD bag until needed. Wear an ESD wrist strap grounded to an unpainted surface of the chassis. If an ESD wrist strap is unavailable, touch an unpainted surface of the chassis before handling the component. Never touch connector pins.

Verifying component failure

Because SFPs are part of the data bus that consists of the SFP, a cable, another SFP, and an HBA, when a fault is reported, it can be caused by any component of the data bus. To identify a faulty SFP, verify that the connected ports host link status LED (back of controller) is off, and isolate the fault to the SFP.

Removing the SFP module

1. Disconnect the fiber-optic interface cable by pushing on the tab on the cable to release it from the SFP. If removing more than one cable, make sure to label them before removing. 2. The SFP is held in place by a small wire bail actuator; flip the actuator up and gently pull on it to remove the SFP from the controller.

Installing an SFP module

1. If the SFP has a plug, remove it, and slide the SFP into the port until it locks into place. 2. Flip the actuator down, and connect the fiber-optic interface cable into the duplex jack at the end of the SFP.
