5-07 We Shall Overcome 1.

After viewing the photo tour, choose three sites and/or locations that played a role in the Civil Rights Movement. For each site or event describe briefly what occurred and why it is significant in the Civil Rights Movement. Montgomery, AL played a large part in the Civil Rights Movement. Many things occurred there, such as Rosa Parks famous arrest, a bus boycott, and many sit -ins. Obviously Washington, D.C. played a huge role with all the politics going on, and thats where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the I Have a Dream speech that inspired so many people. Another place that played a huge part in the Civil Rights Movement was Birmingham, Alabama. There was a great march done by young African-Americans to end discrimination and segregation in workplaces and this is where the police used dogs and fire hoses to get the people to leave. This is also the place that hosts Birmingham Jail, from where King wrote his famous Letter from Birmingham Jail. 2. Identify two ways that police in the South resisted civil rights. In the South, police used unnecessary force, such as fire hoses and dogs, to quell supporters of the Civil Rights Movement, and sometimes arrested people like Martin Luther King, Jr. on ridiculous charges so that people would be discouraged. 3. What occurred on August 28, 1963? What was the purpose of it? Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous, I Have a Dream speech in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. The purpose was to give new hope to the Civil Rights Movement, and to remind people what they were doing it for. 4. What occurred in the Watts section of Los Angeles in August 1965? There were many riots and Martin Luther King, Jr. had to come and speak to the people there, trying to promote peace. He went to many meetings to try and solve the problem that had caused the uprising of these people. 5. Why did hundreds of students come to Mississippi on June 29, 1964? Hundreds of students went to Mississippi on June 29, 1964 because they were pushing for fair voting registration and other educational projects. 6. Who was James Meredith and what happened to him? James Meredith defied segregation and enrolled at the University of Mississippi in 1962. He was shot during a voting rights march on June 6, 1966. He completed the march after being treated. 7. How did Martin Luther King, Jr., refer to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam?

He called it a tragic, reckless adventure. He didnt approve and urged America to repent for its sins and to abandon this venture. 8. In what year did the U.S. first begin to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday as a holiday? The first national King Holiday was observed on January 20, 1986. 9. For whom did Martin Luther King, Jr. have a lifelong admiration? Why? Martin Luther King, Jr. had a lifelong admiration for Mahatma Gandhi, because he was able to accomplish many important things using the principles of nonviolence.
