Lesson Plan – What I Like to Wear

Background:
• Beginning level elementary school students (approx. 9 years old)
• Mid-sized class (10-15 students) for listening and speaking in Tokyo, Japan

Goal:
• To be able to talk about clothing (at a store, in a closet, etc.)

Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
• Learn vocabulary related to clothing in a closet
• Use comparative adjectives to describe characteristics of clothing

Materials:
• Vocabulary flashcards with images (or actual articles of clothing)
• Box with names of articles of clothing written on slips of paper

Procedure:
1. Warm-up activity: Play a game of Last Letter, First Letter (known in Japanese
as Shiri Tori) to review old vocabulary. Start with a color or a classroom object,
and go around the circle twice. (5 minutes)
2. Presentation: Show an image of a closet or bring in articles of clothing to
introduce. Use magazine cut-outs and other forms of realia. Ask if students
can point out any items in English. (5 minutes)
3. Using vocabulary flashcards that have a large picture with the word written
below, have students follow along and read aloud as the flashcards are
shown. Repeat once or twice if needed, to demonstrate pronunciation. (5
minutes)
4. Game – Pictionary: Divide the class into two teams and have students come
up to the board one at a time. The student selects a slip of paper from the
box and draws on the whiteboard until someone from either team can guess
what it is. A point goes to the team of the correct guesser. (In the end,
everybody wins!) (10 minutes)
5. Presentation: Hold up two shirts, one larger and one smaller. Ask the students
to describe the articles of clothing. Again with two skirts, one shorter and one
longer. (5 minutes)
6. Introduce comparative adjectives (-er and more __ than) with additional
adjectives relating to clothing (thicker, thinner, wider, softer, more
comfortable). (5 minutes)
7. Have students work individually on worksheets with pairs of articles of
clothing and ask them to use comparative adjectives to describe the contrast.
(10 minutes)
8. Pair up the students and have them compare their answers. (5 minutes)
9. Closing: Bring the class back together. Talk about something you are wearing.
“This is my favorite skirt because it is more comfortable than my other skirts.
I also like this shirt because blue is my favorite color.”
Model how to form sentences describing articles of clothing. (5 minutes)

10.Homework: Students are to go home and write a paragraph (4-5 sentences)

about their favorite outfit. Use comparative adjectives to describe why these
articles of clothing are better than the others in their closets. This paragraph
and the handout will be collected at the beginning of class for a small portion
of grade. Leave time for any questions and clarification. (5 minutes)
