A Message from the Dean

Dear MLC Families:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The New Year is upon us; and as we charge head-on into our new beginnings, it is a time to re-energize our commitment to family, whether it is our close, immediate family or extended family. I wish you all the best for the New Year! It is also important to recommit to personal improvement. In the New Year, we should try to keep a balance between our work lives and our family and friends and to keep ourselves healthy with a little exercise, (If you are like me, you may have walked past that plate of holiday treats a bit too often!) Please remember to take some time to visit our school and take part in the numerous activities we will be offering for some good old- fashioned family fun. Please take some time to look at the upcoming events and choose one that best fits your family!

Mr. Ranaldi

MLC Selects Students for South Africa Course and Field Study
Three 10th grade and five 11th grade students have been selected for the Second South Africa Course and Field Study, a joint program with the Ethel Walker School and Plowshares Institute, both in Simsbury, CT. Sophomores Mikaela Lombard, Samantha Reale and Kobey Smith and juniors Aysha Khan, Ciera Carter, Natalie Lowe, Taimoni Knighton and Sam-Galarza-Ortiz were selected to participate in the Fall 2014 course that includes a two-week field study in South Africa. The 2012 group spent an hour with Bishop Desmond Tutu, Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke and other anti-apartheid and Truth and Reconciliation Commission members, performed service work in townships outside of Johannesburg and Cape Town, and visited sites of historical importance; it is expected that the 2014 group will have similar experiences. Students will be announcing events and activities to assist them in raising funds for the field study, so please keep an eye out for these. Donations can also be accepted to sponsor a student or the group. Contact Mrs. Wendy NelsonKauffman or Mr. Peter Wolf at MLC.

Sports Update
The MLC Middle School Dragons (3-1) are on FIRE, winning their third game in a row by a score of 39-27 in a hard-fought battle against Rawson at MLC. With only a two point lead at halftime, the Dragons did an excellent job playing smart basketball in the second half to jump up to a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. Here are the highlights: Spectators should have brought their umbrellas because it was raining 3's tonight! Maurice Lee continued his hot shooting whiling hitting a big three pointer in the first quarter, while Joshua Crawford recorded his first points of the season on a momentum-changing three pointer in the fourth quarter. Onlookers were nearly blinded by the smile on Josh's face while running back on defense, and he was overwhelmed with support from his teammates. Maurice's hands had to be iced at halftime due to the extreme heat. Once again, Co-captain, Bryan Scheibelein, gave everyone a free lesson in leadership. His hustle and determination inspired teammates to hold a narrow, early lead going into halftime, and his basketball IQ took over in the second half helping add to that lead. Without a doubt, Bryan leads the team in statistics that cannot be recorded on a stat sheet, but his contributions surely do not go unnoticed. The team would not be enjoying this early success without him! Ryan Bettis-Allen, the architect of the Dragons' unselfish offense, again went into videogame mode during tonight's game. His humble attitude, combined with his knowledge for the game, truly makes everyone around him better. A player with his skill set could easily score 20 points a night, but Ryan's pass-first mentality has been vital to the success of the team. Rumor has it MLC's JV coach, Derek Schrager, has secretly been working behind-the-scenes to try to recruit Ryan, despite being an 8th grader. Tylor Mitchell and Andrew "The Fro" Strudwick anchored the Dragons' offensive game by being a presence in the paint. Strudwick's rebounds coupled with Mitchell's smart shot in the paint may have quietly been the difference for the Dragons. On a side note, Andrew was a perfect 2-2 at the free throw line, showing picture-perfect form and technique. Happy Dragon Games, and may the stats be ever in our favor!

IB Learner Profile Trait of the Month of January

Risk Taker
They approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs. Over the course of the month, MLC will be highlighting this area of the learner profile. Please take some time with your student to review this trait and the positive influence it can bring to your everyday life. Here at MLC, we will be celebrating those students who exhibit caring behaviors. Your child could be one of our students of the month!
