WORLD EVENTS
FROM A
BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
Is It Peace?
Many have stated that it is impossible to know whether or not we are living in the last days before the second coming of Jesus Christ. However, below you will find dramatic proof that these are the endtimes. The proofs below defy coincidence.
In Revelation 16:12, the Bible predicts that the Euphrates River will be dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the east to invade Israel. This will happen at the time of the battle of Armageddon according to verse 16 of the same chapter. The battle of Armageddon will be the final battle at which time Jesus will return and fight on the side of the nation of Israel. Immediately thereafter He will establish His kingdom and usher in His one thousand-year reign of peace. On January 13, 1990, the Indianapolis Star carried the headline Turkey Will Cut Off Flow of Euphrates for One Month. The article stated that a huge reservoir had been built by Turkey. While filling up the reservoir, the flow of the Euphrates would be stopped for one month and a concrete plug for a diversion channel built. These things have now been done. With this newly built dam, Turkey has the ability to stop the Euphrates River at will. The conditions for fulfilling this 1,900 year-old prophecy are now in place.
In Revelation 9:15-16, the Bible prophesies that an army of 200 million soldiers will launch a war which would kill the third part of men. Never in the history of the world until our present generation has there been a power on earth that could field 200 million soldiers. However, the late ruler of China, Mao Tse Tung boasted in his diary that he could field an army of 200 million. The CIA World Factbook reports that in the year 2001, it is estimated that China has 200,886,946 men of military age, and this number is growing by 10 million per year.
Worldwide Numbering System Predicted In Revelation 13, the Bible prophesies that a
world dictator will soon rule over a world government. He will cause all people in the earth to receive a number without which they will be unable to buy or sell. We are seeing this prophecy fulfilled before our eyes in a most astonishing way. Nearly every human being in the world now has been assigned a number. In America it is our Social Security number. In the past few years, we have seen this number extended to newborns. A child without a Social Security number cannot be declared as a dependent on an income tax return. We have seen the emergence of electronic money, shopping with credit cards, and many people urging the abolishment of cash. All of these things could not possibly have been fulfilled until this present time. Only after the invention of the computer could such a worldwide numbering system be administered.
Revelation 13:7 and Daniel 7:23 prophesy the establishment of a world government. The term New World Order has become a prevalent phrase in the worlds political culture. Mikhail Gorbachev made the term famous, and Pope John Paul II has referred to it repeatedly. In the September 12, 1990 issue of the Chicago Tribune, our former president George Bush said, Iraq is the first test for the New World Order. He emphatically stated that the Iraq War is Saddam Hussein against the world. The United Nations troops are continually referred to as the multi-national forces. The decision has been made to establish an interdependent community of nations that will rule the world under United Nations authority. The Bible says that this will lead us into a great world government. The formation of this government is at hand.
or Divine Providence?
Is it coincidental that all of these major prophecies pertaining to the last times are being fulfilled simultaneously?

Hardly.
Now that the political situation in the Middle East has stabilized, I am very excited to announce our next tour to the Holy Land. As always, this is a trip of a lifetime. I anticipate that this one, however, will be extra special. There are two reasons. First, by the time we arrive, the Road Map for Peace will be in full swing. We will feel the political climatefor most, euphoria, for some, dread as we tour the land where God Almighty chose to place His name. And second, by combining our Israel Tour with a 3-day swing through Jordan, this will be one of the LEAST EXPENSIVE tours we will ever be able to offeronly $2,095 for 11 days! I want to personally invite you to join us for Prophecy Tour 2003. You wont want to miss it!
In Israel
We will stand on the Mount of Olives where Jesus will stand when He returnsVisit the Temple Mount itself where the Third Temple will soon be builtSee the cornerstone intended for the rebuilding of the Third TempleAt the Temple Institute we will see the vessels and the garments already prepared for resumption of temple worship Visit the Garden Tomb and the Garden of GethsemaneSee the site of the coming Battle of ArmageddonWe will visit Judean settlements where Jesus prophesied great tribulation will come in the near future (Matthew 24:15-21)Sail across the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on the waterand much, much more!
In Jordan
Jordan is the only nation that the Bible specifically says will not be invaded by the Antichrist. Daniel 11:41 speaks of the Antichrist: He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. Edom is Petra in southern Jordan, the Moab Mountains are in Jordan, and Amman is the capital city of the nation of Jordan. While there we will visit Petra, the incredible ruins of the ancient Roman city, Jerash, and stand on the top of Mount Nebothe place from which God showed Moses the Promised Land just before he died. Mount Nebo overlooks Jericho, and if its a clear day, we may catch a glimpse of Jerusalem in the distance.

ven while executing a full court press promoting peace in the Middle East, President Bush continues to aggressively push his War on Terrorism. Apparently he still thinks the Axis of Evil is evil. Uday and Qusay Hussein are dead. Dissidents are attempting to overthrow the Iranian government. Iran has announced it now possesses missiles that can reach Tel Aviv, and there is compelling evidence to suggest it has been secretly attempting to make nuclear weapons. America is withdrawing its 37,000 troops from Korea's Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), pulling them out of harm's way in case the nuclear dispute with North Korea degenerates into a hot war. It was just announced that the United States will be holding joint military exercises with South Korea in late August. It certainly looks like the U.S. is preparing for war, an observation that has probably not escaped the attention of North Korea.
But the big question in everyone's mind has to be, "When is the big one coming?" The prophecy describes a war that will kill one-third of mankind-two billion people (Rev. 9:15-16). The question is not "if" this war will happen. The only question is when. It appears much more likely to happen in the next five years than in 50. If the Roadmap for Peace turns out to actually be the Confirmation of the Covenant-the beginning of the final seven years-then the war that kills one-third of mankind must happen within the next three years. We know this because the war must happen before the Great Tribulation begins, and the Great Tribulation begins three and onehalf years after the Confirmation of the Covenant. We are not able to speak with absolute certainty about the timing right now. Did the final seven years begin on April 30, 2003? We don't know for sure. But we do know that the endtime has arrived.

9 Rocky Road
Does Roadmap for Peace=Confirmation of the Covenant? Will the Roadmap result in lasting peace? In this edition, the question is explored from three different perspectives. An Israeli point of view is optimistically presented in an exclusive Endtime interview with Uri Dan, a close friend of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon; leading Arab spokesperson Dr. Hanan Ashrawis MIFTAH.org gives an unambiguous Palestinian take on the Roadmaps developments; and finally, Jerusalem-based Christian journalist David Dolan offers his no-holds-barred assessment. It does look like a rocky road ahead.

delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. (John 18:36)
Do you think the Antichrist could be President Bush? I wonder because of the Roadmap for Peace he is trying to push and how he wants to democratize the world. I know people say that he is supposed to be a Christian. I am not saying that he isnt, but every time I see these things I get an uneasy feeling. Thanks, and many blessings on your lives. Teddy Reply: Some of the things the president has done give us the same uneasy feeling. However, the Bible is clear that the Antichrist will rise among a ten-king union most likely based in Europe. It would be hard to envision a scenario under which any U.S. president could fulfill this aspect of the prophecy.
Justified Killing
The response in your March/April issue to the man wondering about military service did him a great injustice. The commandment "Thou shalt not kill" is more properly translated, "Thou shalt not murder." There are reasons to go to war that are justifiable, and the unfortunate killing that is done is not murder, but it is killing done to uphold the righteousness of a greater cause. The Civil War and World War II are two such examples. As far as killing someone and "sending someone to hell," as you put it, their sins send them to hell. I am sure God, in His great mercy, gave them time to repent. I enjoy your ministry a great deal, but you are mistaken in this matter. God bless and keep up the good work. Bob, Toledo, Ohio Reply: Some Christians would agree with you. However, Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be 6 ENDTIME MAGAZINE JULY/AUGUST 2003

Philistine is the same word. The main concentration of Philistines in Bible times was Gaza. Samson went down to Gaza to visit the Philistine Delilah. The main concentration of Palestinians today is Gaza. Things havent changed much. It is true that the country of Jordan was created by the UN to be a Palestinian homeland. And Christians should certainly support Gods covenant that the area of the Promised Land should belong to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To Die is Gain
I was wondering if I am missing something in the interpretation of Satan prevailing against the church, as opposed to Satan prevailing against the saints. In Daniel 7:21, the Antichrist prevailed against the saints. Robert Reply: When the Bible says that Satan prevails against the children of God, it does not mean that he is to get them to deny the Lord. It simply means that he prevails against them physically. In Revelation 12, speaking of the great tribulation, we read that the people who are saved loved not their lives unto the death and they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. So while the Antichrist was overcoming them physically, they were overcoming him spiritually.
Palestinian people
Have you ever addressed the issues concerning that there are no Palestinian people and there has never been a Palestinian State? The Palestinian people are Jordanian people that were caught in the middle of the 1967 War. There never was any movement to create a Palestinian state while Jordan was in control of Jerusalem and the territories. Most of the Christian people are totally ignorant concerning the history of this area of the world. I believe that the Christian people must stand against any movement to give away any land that Israel possesses in order to pacify the Muslim world. Bob, Waco, TX Reply: You are correct in saying there has never been a Palestinian state. However, it is not really accurate to say that there are no Palestinian people. Does Roadmap for Peace=Confirmation of the Covenant?

Uri Dan: I know for sure that President Bush got absolutely committed to bringing real peace and real security and to quiet the situation after more than 2 1/2 years of terrorist attacks by the Palestinians on Israel. I am sure that he is thinking in the most positive way to bring this message. He made that long trip to bring that message of peace across the world, across the Middle East. I am sure that Ariel Sharon would like to see the end of the violence, and accomplishing, step-by-step, a platform for coexistence between the Israelis and the Palestinians. If I compare it to a race for peace, I would say that Ariel Sharon is already there in his Formula-One car to
take this hard and very painful, and no doubt complicated road. Mr. Abu Mazen [a.k.a. Mahmoud Abbas] has to decide if he is sitting in a racing car for peace. If he can be a genuine peaceful driver, then a lot of positive things might happen. I have a lot of question marks about it. Eddie:: I can sense that you are trying to be very positive and optimistic. Can you say something negative here? Uri Dan: You try in vain. It is absolutely harmful not to give it a chance even if the risks are very high for the Israelis. Ariel Sharon went an extra mile. No other democracy in the world would have dared to give another chance to the
Palestinians, but Mr. Sharon is ready to give them that last historic chance in this generation. I dont think the Palestinians will have any other partner in this generation if they release the car. Eddie:: Comparing Abu Mazen to Yasser Arafatdo you have someone here you can totally trust? 1. Uri Dan: You go through trial and error, especially after such terrible war was imposed on Israel: the killing of citizens by car bombs, by suicide bombers. Mr. Ehud Barak in Camp David under Clinton was ready to give nearly everything, and instead got the war managed, directed, engineered by Yasser Arafat who is there to sabotage this race. No doubt about it, the American, British and Israeli intelligence is very aware of it, that the man is there to trying to torpedo all this progress. Baxter: What are the real pressure pointsthe pivotal make-or-break issues in this negotiation? Uri Dan: First of all, stopping completely all the terrorist attacks. Not a cease-fire. Just as Mr. Colin Powell said, they have to dismantle and disarm the infrastructure of the terrorist organizations of the Hamas, the Islamic Jihad and the rest. This is what Mr. George W. Bush is repeating. Mr. Ariel Sharon is saying, I will not be compromised on the security of the Israelis, on the security of the Jews in their country. There will be no compromise. The real road map regretfully, for the moment, is the road map of terrorism, from Casablanca via Ankara to Riyadh to Pakistan to Indonesia. That is the roadmap that the world is facing, and which became clear after the terrible massacre attacks in America in New York and Washington on Sept 11the attack of the Muslim fanatics against the democracies. Israel happens to be geographically face-to-face with that kind of bloodstained roadmap of terror. Looking at that on the global scale, one should remember why Israel is so aware about its security. Baxter: You mentioned that terrorism must stop. Can Abu Mazen really do that? Uri Dan: He says he is going to do it.

One hopes that he will carry out this commitment. I can tell you that the foreign intelligence agencies dont believe that he is capable. When they are asked why a country like Britain is putting pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians, the answer is this is a situation where policy dictates the reality and intelligence data is put aside. I think that George W. Bush understands it. He said at Sharm el Sheik, If terrorism will continue, the Palestinians will get nothing. Baxter: The Roadmap deals with returning to pre-1967 borders, specifically mentioning the Saudi Arabian initiative. Sharon didnt like it being mentioned because it implies that eventually Israel will have to pull back to pre-1967 borders. Is there any chance of that happening? Uri Dan: I dont believe so. You have to notice that Bush, neither in Sharm el Sheik nor in Aqaba, came to that point. I dont believe that some take seriously that Israel will go back to 67 borders. The Israeli Prime Minister said absolutely he is ready to make painful concessions, and he said it until such a point that today there are, from the extreme right, threats because of security to Israel. There might be threats to his life. I say that Ariel Sharon is a very responsible leader who feels the responsibility for the future of the Jews in this state and for the Jewish people and absolutely is aware of the danger.

Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount compound on September 28, 2000 is what many believe triggered the Palestinian intifada. Uri Dan, not shown in the photo, was with Sharon on the visit. On June 30, 2003, the Temple Mount was, for the first time since, opened again to non-Muslim visitors.
Israel. Therefore, Ariel Sharon asked the President to stipulate the fact that Israel is a Jewish State as a direct answer to that demand which all the Israelis rejectthe insistence of the Palestinians to let the Palestinian refugees come back and to install themselves in Israel. Baxter: The refugee issue is one of the pivotal issues that could torpedo this process because the Palestinians up until now have insisted upon their right of return. If you put 3.7 million refugees into Israel, suddenly you no longer have a Jewish state. Uri Dan: Absolutely. After that conversation between him and Prime Minister Sharon, President Bush understood the importance of it and inserted it into his speech.
Palestinian refugees
Uri Dan: Ariel Sharon, in his speech in Aqaba at that summit, spoke about Israel being the Jewish State. He explained this also to Pres. George W. Bush when he met with him for more than an hour in Aqaba. Mr. Bush was surrounded by staff aides Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Eliott Abrams and other assistants of the White House. Mr. Sharon explained to Mr. Bush, according to what I understand, that it is necessary and vital that the American President in his speech will define Israel as the Jewish State. The President accepted it because, as Sharon told him, if the Palestinians demands will be accepted to let millions of Palestinians come back to Israel, then it will be a catastrophe for
Jerusalem. If this will be the provision of the Palestinians, they will never have any peace with Israel. There might be accommodations, a replacement, and all kinds of ideas where the capital might be. But when it comes to Jerusalem, one thing should be remembered. Ariel Sharon has repeatedly stated that Jerusalem, united as it is, will remain the capital of Israel, and there are no negotiations about it. When it comes to holy places, there might be different ideas to see how Israel enables the freedom of religion to everyone. You know that it is an open city for any worshipers of any religion. This was not the situation when it was under Muslim rule.
Status of Jerusalem
Baxter: Lets talk about the status of Jerusalem. Every time I hear anything from any of the Palestinian officials or any Arab leader, they always say there must be a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Is that possible? Uri Dan: Arafat has been promising his shahids (martyrs) time and again You will see the Palestinian flag flying over
leader, and he knows how to dismantle the mines step by step. If there will be a real partner for the historic voyage, terrorism must come to a complete halt. Then a lot of things, which look to be problematic, can be solved. Dont forget that Ehud Barak, the previous prime minister, went to Camp David under Bill Clinton. He was ready to give official and political foothold to Yasser Arafat on Temple Mount, which meant giving up Israeli sovereignty over the most sacred place to the Jews. Yasser Arafat answered to Barak and Clinton, There was no temple there at all. Then Clinton said, Even in the New Testament the temple is mentioned. Mr. Barak, trying in vain to persuade Yasser Arafat, said to him that, when young Jesus was walking in the streets of Jerusalem, he looked up and saw the temple. No, Arafat denied it completely. This was the reason why Mr. Ariel Sharon, who then was head of the Likud opposition party, challenged that capitulation of Barak before Yasser Arafat and decided, on Sept 28, 2000, to go to the Temple Mount. Mr. Barak later said, What do you want from Ariel Sharon? He did, as head of the opposition, the right thing to challenge my policy. Baxter: Back in 2000, President Clinton suggested a sharing arrangement where both Muslims and Jews could worship on the Temple Mount. If we should come to this juncture again, from what you know, is there a chance that such an arrangement could work? Uri Dan: I am sure that once you have a real partner, and not Arafat sitting there and denying completely any existence of the Temple on the mountany Jewish connection to itthat dialogue will be possible to help all the worshippers of any religion to visit Temple Mount, to pray on Temple Mount and not to be subjected to what Arafat suggested. Arafat suggested that Muslims should have sovereignty over all the Temple Mount. You have nothing to do with it, he said. Once you give it to me, I will allow the Jews to pray under my security and my protection at the Western Wall. Have you heard anything about that crazy idea? Thats the tragedy of the situation there. The President of the United States
is ready to help divide the Holy Land, and he knows a lot about the Holy Land. One should pray that you will have a real partner for the other part of the Holy Land meaning what now is discussed in the future at the end of the Road Map, a Palestinian state or a provisional Palestinian State. When you say two countries for two people, happily, there is one country with one people. Its Israel. Then there is a semi-country already for the Palestinians since the Israelis in previous governments made the mistake and brought the war criminal Yasser Arafat and his gang through the gates of Jerusalem. Israel has been paying the price of the agreement signed on the lawn of the White House on Sept 13, 1993. But that state in creation, the Palestinian state, got no people which deserves to have a state now because all of them are happy when Jews are killed in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa, and on the roads and in the busses. Now lets hope that in Aqaba, when the President launched this way for peace, they will understand that they have to try to behave like real people who deserve a state. Thats the big test for them. The Palestinians have to prove that their
prime minister is really ruling them, that he will get the support of his people, and that he will overcome all of the maneuvers of Yasser Arafat to topple him. To Sharon, the security of the Jews is above all, and he will not let anyone play with him when it comes to organizations that have been hitting Israel. When I heard Bush talking about the division of the Holy Land, I knew that a man like him, who has so much respect for the Holy Land and who declared rightly and justifiably a global war against terrorism, will not allow the other part of the Holy Land to be given to terrorists. He will not take the risk that will bring destruction or annihilation. Baxter: Will one suicide bomber derail this whole peace movement? Uri Dan: No. Its not a matter of one. U.S. and Israeli intelligence knows exactly if the other side is really serious in dismantling those death machinesthose industries of suicide bombers. Thats the only industry the Palestinians have created. Now theyve got an historic chance. If they miss the chance, they will miss the state.

outposts in the occupied Palestinian territories is by no means sufficient to paving the way for peace. Most of the locations that Sharon has vowed to dismantle do not even comprise a fraction of illegal Jewish settlements built on privately owned Palestinian land. Israels efforts should now be focused on actually doing something to end the occupation and dismantle all illegal Jewish settlements, according to international law, and not on trying to find the most deceptive way to gain maximum credit for minimum effort. No one expects the road ahead to be easy, but there are basic expectations that must be met in order to end the current atmosphere of fear and anger, revenge and distrust, and most essentially to finally end the Palestinian peoples deprivation of basic human rights.
two days unraveled, an overwhelming feeling that hope and history are doomed to never cross paths in the Middle East engulfed the minds of those who most often find themselves caught in the crossfirethe Palestinian and Israeli civilians. The killing of the innocent will linger in the thoughts of future generations and with each death the anger will be further fuelled until our respective leaders either tragically wipe out each others people or assume their obligations and responsibilities by salvaging the remains of the road map. Israels botched assassination of Abdel Aziz Rantisi, and the innocent lives lost and injured during the attempt shows that Israeli Prime Minister Sharon does not miss an opportunity to drag the conflict back towards violent confrontation. His inability to break away from the military general of yesteryears and assume the role demanded by the conflict of a peace partner was on full display as Israeli
Apache helicopters wreaked havoc on Gaza. Obviously threatened by the emerging need to address illegal outposts and settlements and to provide Palestinians with a contiguous and independent state, expressed by President Bush during the Aqaba Summit, Sharon found a way to kill two birds with one stone when he ordered Tuesdays military operation. He has managed to deflect international pressure by reigniting the cycle of violence and then conveniently placing the blame squarely on the Palestinians and more importantly he torpedoed the road map. While no doubt this reasserted Sharons power among both his right wing government and extreme Israeli settlers, whose violence and lawlessness unashamedly drowns out the more reasoned voices in Israel and continues to hijack any attempt to reach lasting peace, his actions seem poised to lead Israelis down a dangerous path that threatens further destabilization, fear and violence with no end in sight. Reports that have surfaced during this week of the Israeli High Court ordering an injunction against the removal of outposts to consider the legality of such actions, seemingly making a mockery of international law, and renewed calls by Israeli Defense Minister Mofaz to deport Palestinian President Arafat seem to throw further doubt on Israels commitment to peace. Israelis must ask themselves if they really want to place their trust in a leader who seems busy name calling, dismissing the Palestinian leadership as cry babies and describing Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas as a chick that hasn't grown its feathers yet," while his only solution continues to be reckless violence with a total disregard for human lives and the imperatives of peace. It is time for Israelis to ask where Sharon and his fanatical ruling coalition are leading them. But what about the responsibility on Palestinians and in particular Mahmoud Abbas to deliver on the promise of securing a ceasefire from militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad? It seems that Sharon has managed to sabotage any chance Mahmoud Abbas had of arriving at an agreement to end the violence and armed resistance by these groups, knowing well the sensitivity and explosive
nature of such domestic dialogue within Palestinian society. As Hamas was coming around to resuming talks on a possible cessation or suspension of attacks on Tuesday, the timing of the assassination clearly shows that Sharon did not wish to see the Palestinian prime minister succeed. In fact, if anything, the assassination was likely to increase Israels security concerns, as the scores of innocent bystanders killed by the operation, would fuel Palestinian anger and further popularize militant groups call for continuing the armed struggle against the occupation. Despite Sharons provocations, the various Palestinian factions must consider the grave consequences of their actions and whether they are synchronous with Palestinian aspirations of an independent and democratic Palestinian state.
It is time for Israelis to ask where Sharon and his fanatical ruling coalition are leading them.
At this critical juncture, it is necessary for President Bush to be directly involved in returning both sides towards implementing the road map. Having staked so much of his personal prestige at the Aqaba Summit, Bush must now step up to the promises he made and take charge in ensuring the survival of a peace plan already in turmoil. The temptation to withdraw before a potential political fiasco must be resisted. The fate of Israelis, Palestinians and the wider stability of the Middle East depends on this.
reestablishment of relative calm in the region. Intense diplomatic activity (and pressure) from Washington, epitomized by U.S. National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rices visit to the region, has facilitated the first crucial step in what is expected to be a tough road ahead. Despite the Israeli governments arrogant refusal to acknowledge the legitimacy of the Palestinian factions status [Hamas], publicly claiming that it will ignore their declared hudna (ceasefire), the U.S.backed roadmap for peace is set on track. Palestinian factions have committed themselves to the cessation of military operations against Israel, and Israeli troops have begun their long-awaited withdrawal from parts of the Palestinian territories re-occupied by Israel since September 2000. However, while these initial steps are imperative in reversing current hostilities and creating an immediate framework for military security, the overall process of putting a complete end to violence, negotiating a viable solution to the conflict, and ultimately achieving a lasting peace will have to be based on a real assessment of the root causes of the conflict. Israeli and U.S. decision-makers must transcend military considerations and move beyond their shallow interpretation of the Palestinian reality as a mere security issue; they must finally make a commitment to guarantee human security for both Palestinians and Israelis, by ending the injustices committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. Long term strategies are needed to create a sustainable process towards peace, essentially taking into consideration the major issues that continue to fuel the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, namely Israels construction and expansion of Jewish settlements within the 1967 boundaries; Israels horrendous violations of basic Palestinian human rights, through excessive use of force against civilians, home demolition, political imprisonment, movement restrictions, home demolitions, and economic strangulation; Israels continued refusal to deal with the Palestinian refugees issue; and most urgently Israels continued occupation of the West Bank (including east Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip. Reconciliation can only be achieved through justice for the Palestinian people.

David Dolan is a Jerusalem-based author and journalist. This most insightful article is reprinted from ddolan.com. The Performance-Based Road Map to a Permanent Solution to the IsraeliPalestinian Conflict proved to be leading in the direction of more violence during June, not toward the touted enduring peace that its advocates projected. World leaders, including American President George Bush, seemed taken aback by the fresh river of blood that flowed in the Roadmap's wake. Given that every previous land for peace plan had led to sharp escalations in both Israeli and Palestinian death tolls, international leaders should have anticipated the renewed bloodbath that followed the plan's formal introduction at the end of April. The world's diplomats and leaders seem to have learned precious little from the failed Oslo peace process, which collapsed in an explosion of fire in September of 2000. They have apparently failed to absorb the obvious truth that a substantial portion of the Palestinian people and their regional allies utterly reject a two-state solution to the burning conflict. Such a rejection, based mainly on Islamic teachings and principles, will not simply disappear because a new batch of world leadersGeorge Bush, Tony Blair, Kofi Anan and Vladimir Putinhave replaced the original supporting cast of Bill Clinton, John Major, Perez de Cuellar and Boris Yeltsin. The most dubious contention that has been bandied about in support of the new Roadmap peace attempt is that the quick

and decisive American-led victory over Saddam would somehow produce an instantly reformed, or at least adequately frightened, Arab Middle East that would bow in humble submission to the fresh peace attempt. Such a proposition totally ignores, or at best vastly underrates, the enduring strength and fervor of Islamic antipathy over the existence of a Jewish state anywhere in the mainly Muslim Middle East. Whether Israel is a small country that encompasses the Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and Judea and Samaria, or a tiny land without these areas, as envisioned in the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan, is of little importance to many regional
Muslims. This is especially so for the many thousands who support the radical Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade Palestinian groups, along with the Shiite Hizbullah militia in southern Lebanon. Saddam's swift and dramatic fall from power will hardly persuade such dedicated militants to beat their cherished Islamic swords into plowshares, particularly since the brutal Iraqi dictator was seen by most of them as a backslidden Muslim at best.
Summit in Jordan
Ignoring the shaky platform for launching a new Middle East peace initiative, American President George Bush
traveled to the region in early June to place his official White House seal of approval on the Roadmap plan. He met on June 4 with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the new Palestinian Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas, in the southern Jordanian resort city of Aqaba. As his Secretary of State had done just a few weeks before him, the U.S. leader pledged full American support for a comprehensive peace settlement by the end of 2005. He made clear to the Israeli and Palestinian leaders that he was personally committed to such an outcome, and would pursue it with forceful determination, despite expected obstacles along the road. The Israeli leader repeated that a full cessation of Palestinian violence was an absolute requirement for the new peace process to succeed. But he also pledged again his willingness to make painful concessions for the sake of real peace, if the other side is truly willing to take the necessary steps to halt the violence and live in peace with Israel. This is widely interpreted to mean a near total abandonment of over 200 Jewish communities that have sprung up in the contested territories since the areas were captured by Israel during the 1967 Six Day War. Mahmoud Abbas said the magic words required of him under the Roadmap formula. He pledged to stop all terrorist assaults on Jewish targets, and to work for a peaceful solution to all outstanding issues that divide Israelis and Palestinians. However, he repeated the long-held PLO demand that Palestinian refugees require a just resolution of their problems, which was interpreted to mean the so-called right to return to family homes inside of Israel's pre-1967 borders. Abbas also stressed that the unity of the Palestinian people was of utmost importance to him, which was seen as an early admission that he was not prepared to use force to disarm the radical rejectionist groups. Abbas later said in plain language that he would only engage in dialogue with the extremists, which was viewed by Israeli officials as an early sign that the new peace program would not move forward unless IDF forces were allowed by the international community to militarily dismantle the radical groups.
human chorus of Peace! Peace! is often a signal for sudden destruction to descend upon the Lord's special land. Indeed, the highly celebrated Oslo peace accord signing in September 1993 did not at all mark the beginning of an era of docile tranquility in Israel, but set off a sharp escalation of terrorist violence that produced a three-fold increase in Israeli civilian casualties. In a similar fashion, the Aqaba Summit was followed by the worst explosion of violence since the March 2002 splurge of terrorist atrocities that sparked a major Israeli military campaign. It began just four days later, when a group of Israeli reserve soldiers was ambushed while on foot patrol in the Gaza Strip. Four men were killed in the early morning assault, and several others were wounded. Most ominously, responsibility for the attack was later claimed by the Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terrorist groups, signaling their joint determination to wreck the Roadmap process in its early stages. Hamas spokesman Abdel Aziz Rantisi went on Palestinian television to take credit for the unprovoked attack, vowing that the joint operation was just the first of many designed to crush the new peace process. He repeated earlier Hamas statements that the militantswho are supported by a substantial portion of the Palestinian people, and by such regional states as Syria and Iranwould never lay down their weapons and accept a Jewish state living side by side in peace with a Palestinian one. He warned that Hamas militants and their Islamic comrades would violently oppose any attempt to disarm them by the Palestinian Authority, or to restrict in any way their just jihad struggle against the Zionist enemy.
The White House responded by announcing that President Bush was deeply troubled by the Israeli attempt to eliminate the vile Hamas official. The Israeli government and public was stunned by the American reaction, given that it was clearly Hamas and its radical allies that were openly declaring holy war on the Roadmap peace plan. Many commentators bitterly recalled Bush's widely reported statement after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York and Washington that a terrorist is a terrorist, no matter what their cause, and his pledge to seek out and destroy such evildoers with all of America's armed military might. Many Israeli leaders and analysts have been cogently arguing since the mid1990s that there is no chance for a permanent solution to the deeply entrenched Palestinian-Israeli conflict until all terrorist groups are militarily neutralized. While it is certainly true that a military solution alone cannot resolve the overall conflict, it must certainly be an important component of such a solution unless a miracle takes place and such groups voluntarily end their religiousbased jihad war, or are forced to do so by Arafat's Palestinian Authority. Given that such things are about as likely as hell freezing over, only strong Israeli military action, or an unexpected American and/or European operation, stands any real chance of weakening the militants to the point where they are no longer able to wreck all attempts to peacefully end the conflict.
Death in Jerusalem
It was just over 24 hours later when Hamas kept its wicked pledge to slaughter more innocent Israeli civilians. A public bus was instantly transformed into burning fire and twisted metal after a Hamas terrorist, deceptively dressed as an Orthodox Jew, boarded the vehicle on Jaffa Road and set off his deadly explosive charge. A total of 17 people were murdered, including a local Arab passenger, and over 100 others were injured. Many others who were innocently standing close-by, like American Ron Cantrell who volunteers with the Jerusalem-based international Christian group Bridges for Peace, were not physically wounded, but sustained powerful emotional scars that will remain with them for some time at
...And hypocrisy
Israel quickly responded to Rantisi's latest rantings by firing a rocket on his car as it was traveling in Gaza City. However, the June 10 attack only wounded the Hamas spokesman, along with his son, while killing his driver and a woman walking nearby. Rantisi, who had earlier condemned the American-led war on Iraq as naked aggression and called for the assassination of George Bush and Tony Blair, later denounced the attack from his hospital bed and vowed swift revenge.

least. After walking in shock to his home some distance away, Cantrell's family were sickened to find parts of human flesh clinging to the back of his shirt. Israeli leaders responded to the outrageous and deliberate slaughter of innocents, a majority of them women, by carrying out several attacks upon Hamas targets. This time, the White House did not condemn the justified Israeli response. Reacting to earlier widespread American congressional and public criticism of the President's stand, Bush changed his tune considerably by calling upon all those who want lasting peace in the Middle East to deal harshly with Hamas militants. The usually neutral European Union echoed this sentiment, with EU Mideast envoy Miguel Moratinos and other diplomats strongly condemning the Hamas bus attack. One week later, visiting American Secretary of State Colin Powell said at a joint news conference with Ariel Sharon in Jerusalem that all must punch through the obstacles posed by Hamas in order to overwhelm the group. This was interpreted by many Israeli analysts as a green light for Sharon to carry on with military strikes against the rejectionist group and its allies. Such targeted assaults on Hamas leaders and activists were carried out later in June, especially after another terror attack left an Israeli grocer dead in the Jordan Valley. He was blown to bits after detecting a homicide terrorist hiding in his store, which officials said probably prevented a much greater tragedy if the attacker had been able to carry out his apparent plan to board a crowded civilian bus near the store. A few days later, an American-born Israeli man was shot dead on a road north of Jerusalem while on his way to a wedding party for his son, who was only married the night before. The man's visiting American parents were seriously wounded in the armed ambush. Despite the attacks, Sharon continued to carry out his pledge to begin dismantling illegal Jewish outposts in Judea and Samaria. The move was strongly opposed by many of his Likud party colleagues, a few of whom vowed to topple the sitting PM. Over 1,000 soldiers were deployed on June 18 to forcibly dismantle the inhabited small settlement of Mitzpe Yitzhar, just south of the biblical town of Shechemtoday's Nablus. The settlement was established after Palestinian gunmen overran the nearby sacred site of Joseph's Tomb in October 2000. Scores of Jews protested the evacuation, and several arrests were made. Analysts warned that much more violent resistance can be expected if Sharon goes ahead with his pledge to dismantle many other larger communities in the biblical heartland of Judea and Samaria, in preparation for a Palestinian state to emerge in the area. Meanwhile, the political reigns of the rival Labor party once again fell into the hands of peace process advocate Shimon Peres, who signaled that he might push for his party to join with Sharon in forming another National Unity coalition government. Such a move might insure that the Road Map process moves forward despite the renewed Palestinian terrorist violence. Despite the Palestinian holy war against reborn Israel, may the Lord continue to return His chosen covenant Jewish people to the Promised Land in accordance with his many biblical promises, such as this one in Isaiah 11:12: And He will lift up a standard for the nations, and will assemble the banished ones of Israel, and will gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. through the UN that all countries had to tighten up on dealing with terrorist organizations and money laundering. There was a pause to try to calmly deal with the situation in Afghanistan, and to give the Taliban government the chance to hand over Osama bin Laden, which they refused to do. and those instigating genocide in any part of the world will be brought. The U.S. wont agree to it. We have an international convention protecting basic rights for children across the world in every country. The U.S. wont sign up. Its as though the U.S. doesnt want to work alongside the rest of us for a fair set of rules that treat all people equally and give us a chance to build a more just order. Baxter: approach to standpoint opposed to state? Does this boil down to an governing the world from a of global governance as governance by the nationevery human being in the world. Cant we have an international court where barbarous torturers and criminals can be held to account, not by having to declare war, but by indicting them and bringing them to trial for gross war crimes? We did that with Hitler. Weve done that now in The Hague with the evils that went on in Bosnia. We have a tribunal to deal with genocide that was set up through the UN. We thought we could have a rule of law that covers all countries, under which all countries agree to bring themselves. All of us agree, but for some reason the U.S. doesnt seem able to. You seem to feel differently than the rest of us. Baxter: Can we have a world court without having a world government? Short: This isnt a world court for dayto-day crimes. This is for gross crimes against humanity. Its what the Nazis were brought to court for. suaded me to stay and said we would help the people of Iraq rebuild the country properly. Well unite the international community around that, and well give the United Nations its proper role in helping create the new government in Iraq because the occupying powers cant do that. Those promises were broken, and it became clear that some of the things Tony Blair had said to Britain on the way to war werent true. I became ashamed of what wed done and decided I had to leave the government. Baxter: Did you reconsider once the mass graves of 3,000 to 5,000 bodies were uncovered? Short: Most of those graves date from the period at the end of the first Gulf War when there was a major uprising. People hoped to overthrow Saddam Hussein. We didnt support them, and lots of people were slaughtered and buried. We have never doubted that Saddam Hussein is a brutal and cruel dictator, and we should have dealt with him long ago. I never said ignore it. I was saying, Lets do everything we can to solve this problem both by making sure he doesnt have dangerous weapons and by bringing his regime to an end without inflicting even more suffering on the poor people of Iraq.
Short: It is not quite as sharp as that. It isnt that the era of the nation-state is over, but I think we are moving more and more to global cooperation and standards and rules for cooperating together. The World Trade Organization is meant to make laws for fair trade all over the world. At the moment laws are unfair to poorer countries. They cant get their commodities into our markets. That helps to keep them poor. The UN has UNICEF that tries to bring education to children across the world. The World Health Organization is trying to get basic health care across the world. The UN has environmental organizations because we all realize that if the air isnt kept clean and the seas unpolluted, the planet will die on us. That requires a new spirit of cooperation between nation-states and the willingness to abide by rules that apply equally to everyone.
Baxter: In the U.S., the thinking is that the Middle East has produced terrorists for many years, not just on 9/11. The terrorism always seems to have emanated from that part of the world. It is believed by some that the only way to eliminate it is to drive out the old regimes and bring in democracy. It was thought that the U.S. could move into Iraq, deal with Saddam, and establish a base of operation to force reformation throughout the Muslim world. There is strong evidence to support this feeling. Short: I agree. I think you clearly summarized the thinking of the present U.S. administration. The flaw in that thinking is that almost everyone in the Middle East feels very angry about the way in which Israel has been backed by the U.S. and allowed to breach international law, oppressing the Palestinian people. The terrorist movements coming out of the Middle East are there partly because theres such a bitter sense of anger and injustice. In Ireland where there has been history of uprising against British colonialism, there was a positive explanation for lots of young men and women being willing to join terrorist organizations. It was the historical injustice. We needed to deal with the injustice and then end violence as a way of political change because there was a way of getting justice through politics. Thats my view of what is needed in the Middle East. Sax: Politics and finance is one way to look at the terrorism problem. The other way to look at it is as a purely a religious issue where 0.1% of the land is controlled by the Israelis and they are being asked to give half of it back. Short: That is wrong, though. The UN established by a vote an Israeli state after the terrible events in Europe, and Israel now occupies a lot of territory beyond the state that was given to them by the UN. Baxter: That was because Israel accepted the UN decision, and the Arabs started a war. Consequently, the borders have been determined by war instead of peace. Short: Its partly true. I mean there ENDTIME MAGAZINE JULY/AUGUST 2003 23

have been a lot of wars and brutality, but the right isnt all one-sided.
Baxter: I have read that if we do not remake the world in our image, the world would remake America in its image. There is a feeling that leaving a regime like Saudi Arabias alone, a regime that kills people if they try to convert to another religion, propagates the very climate that produces terrorism. Short: Because this area is so oil-rich, it has been manipulated since the end of the Ottoman Empire. New national borders have been drawn around most of the oil. They have rich royal family governments who, up until recently, have been big allies of America. America has supported them and armed them. Suddenly the U.S. says, We are going to do things differently. The U.S. then uses its great military power to kick the existing dictatorship out. But you cant just bully people into what you want or you make them hate you.

with highly miniaturized computers that enable products to be identified and tracked at any point along the supply chain. The system could be applied to almost any physical item, from ballpoint pens to toothpaste, which would carry their own unique information in the form of an embedded chip. The chip sends out an identification signal allowing it to communicate with reader devices and other products embedded with similar chips. Analysts envision a time when the system will be used to identify and track every item produced on the planet.
Theft will be drastically reduced because items will report when they are stolen, their smart tags also serving as a homing device toward their exact location. MIT's Auto-ID Center Since the Auto-ID Center's founding at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1999, it has moved forward at remarkable speed. The center has attracted funding from some of the largest consumer goods manufacturers in the world, and even counts the Department of Defense among its sponsors. In a mid2001 pilot test with Gillette, Philip Morris, Procter & Gamble, and WalMart, the center wired the entire city of A number for every item on the Tulsa, Oklahoma with radio-frequency planet equipment to verify its ability to track Auto-ID employs a numbering scheme Auto-ID equipped packages. called ePC (for electronic product code) Though many Auto-ID proponents which can provide a unique ID for any appear focused on inventory and supply physical object in the world. the home. This would allow for seamless, continuous identification and tracking of physical items as they move from one place to another, enabling companies to determine the whereabouts of all their products at all times. Steven Van Fleet, an executive at International Paper, looks forward to the prospect. We'll put a radio frequency ID tag on everything that moves in the North American supply chain, he enthused recently. The ultimate goal is for Auto-ID to create a physically linked world in which every item on the planet is numbered, identified, catalogued, and tracked. And the technology exists to make this a reality. Described as a political rather than a technological problem, creating a global system would... involve negotiation between, and consensus among, different countries. Supporters are aiming for worldwide acceptance of the technologies needed to build the infrastructure within the next few years.

Prophecy Insight
Consumer marketing applications will decimate privacy Radio frequency is another technology that supermarkets are already using in a number of places throughout the store. We now envision a day where consumers will walk into a store, select products whose packages are embedded with small radio frequency UPC codes, and exit the store without ever going through a checkout line or signing their name on a dotted line. Jacki Snyder, Manager of Electronic Payments for Supervalu (Supermarkets), Inc., and Chair, Food Marketing Institute Electronic Payments Committee Auto-ID would expand marketers' ability to monitor individuals' behavior to undreamt of extremes. With corporate sponsors like Wal-Mart, Target, the Food Marketing Institute, Home Depot, and British supermarket chain Tesco, as well as some of the world's largest consumer goods manufacturers including Proctor and Gamble, Phillip Morris, and Coca Cola, it may not be long before Auto-IDbased surveillance tags begin appearing in every store-bought item in a consumer's home. According to a video tour of the Home of the Future and Store of the Future sponsored by Proctor & Gamble, applications could include shopping carts that automatically bill consumer's accounts (cards would no longer be needed to link purchases to individuals), refrigerators that report their contents to the supermarket for re-ordering, and interactive televisions that select commercials based on the contents of a home's refrigerator. Now that shopper cards have whetted their appetite for data, marketers are no longer content to know who buys what, when, where, and how. As incredible as it may seem, they are now planning ways to monitor consumers' use of products within their very homes. Auto-ID tags coupled with indoor receivers installed in shelves, floors, and doorways, could provide a degree of omniscience about consumer behavior that staggers the imagination. Consider the following statements by John Stermer, Senior Vice President of eBusiness Market Development at ACNielsen: [After bar codes] [t]he next 'big thing' [was] [f]requent shopper cards. While

It appears that Wal-Mart will be leading the entire global retail industry into the era of Radio Frequency ID technology. It was announced on June 11 that its top 100 suppliers are to start using RFID chips by 2005.
these did a better job of linking consumers and their purchases, loyalty cards were severely limited... consider the usage, consumer demographic, psychographic and economic blind spots of tracking data... [S]omething more integrated and holistic was needed to provide a ubiquitous understanding of on- and off-line consumer purchase behavior, attitudes and product usage. The answer: RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.... In an industry first, RFID enables the linking of all this product information with a specific consumer identified by key demographic and psychographic markers... Where once we collected purchase information, now we can correlate multiple points of consumer product purchase with consumption specifics such as the how, when and who of product use. Marketers aren't the only ones who want to watch what you do in your home. Enter again the health surveillance connection. Some have suggested that pill bottles in medicine cabinets be tagged with Auto-ID devices to allow doctors to remotely monitor patient compliance with prescriptions. While developers claim that Auto-ID technology will create order and balance in a chaotic world, even the center's executive director, Kevin Ashton, acknowledges there's a Brave New
World feel to the technology. He admits, for example, that people might balk at the thought of police using Auto-ID to scan the contents of a car's trunk without needing to open it. The Center's co-director, Sanjay E. Sarma, has already begun planning strategies to counter the public backlash he expects the system will encounter.
