Module 18
Roadway Plan Production
In this module, you learn how to work with Roadway Plan Production tools in AutoCAD Civil 3D. The Plan Production tools are used to automate the generation of plan and profile design and construction sheets. Plan and profile design and construction sheets can be either generated in the working drawing, or in new drawings that seamlessly reference the data residing in the working drawing.
Objectives
After completing this module, you will be able to:
Create view frames in a view frame group. Create all plan and profile sheets in the current drawing. Create all plan and profile sheets in a new drawing. Create all plan and profile sheets in individual drawings. Use the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager to manage the sheets.
NOTES
Notes to Instructor
Data for this module resides in the \AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 Education Curriculum\Module 18 - Roadway Plan Production\ folder.
Exercises
The following exercises are provided in step-by-step format. Open the AutoCAD Civil 3D program prior to beginning the lesson by double-clicking the Civil 3D icon on the desktop. For those working in the imperial system use the drawing files beginning with the letter I. Those working in the metric system should use the drawing files beginning with the letter M. You are provided with a drawing for each exercise in the lesson. You must use the drawings provided with the exercises. The exercises in this module are as follows: 1. Create View Frames in a View Frame Group 2. Create All Sheets in the Current Drawing 3. Create All Sheets in a New Drawing 4. Create All Sheets in Individual Drawings 5. Use the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager
18-2
NOTES
View frames are model space objects that show the area of the horizontal alignment that is represented in each sheet.
To create view frames, you select a drawing template (DWT) with layout definitions that contain scaled viewports and the sheet borders. When you use the Create View Frames command, the first step is to select the drawing template (DWT) that contains the layout definitions.
18-3
NOTES
After you select the drawing template, you then select the layout definition.
Civil 3D then prompts you for a number of other parameters that control the creation of the view frames and match lines. In Prospector, view frames are organized in a view frame group.
The View Frame Style and View Frame Label Style control the display and
18-4
NOTES
annotation of the view frames in model space. The Match Line Style and Match Line Label Style control the display and annotation of the match lines in model space. You can use grips to modify the position of the view frames and match lines in model space before creating the sheets. After you have created the view frames, the next step is to create the sheets. When you create the sheets, you are presented with the following options:
Create all sheets on layouts in the current drawing. Create sheets on layouts in a new drawing. Create sheets on layouts on individual drawings.
When you create the sheets and layouts in the current drawing, Civil 3D creates a layout for each sheet in the view frame group. When you create the sheets and layouts in a new drawing, Civil 3D creates a layout for each sheet in the view frame group, and uses AutoCAD external references and Civil 3D reference objects to reference the data residing in the original drawing. This enables you to create a production drawing that is dynamically linked to the objects in a design drawing. Graphical data is referenced using AutoCAD external references.
18-5
NOTES
A Civil 3D reference object is created in the production drawing and references the object data that resides in the working drawing. You can also create the sheets and layouts in individual drawings.
In this circumstance, AutoCAD external references and Civil 3D reference objects are also used. AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager is used to manage the created sheets.
Sheet sets are defined and stored in a sheet set (DST) file that indicates where the sheets are located.
18-6
NOTES
Sheet Set Manager can also be used to automate the population of relevant data in a title block, such as date and drawing number.
18-7
NOTES
Key Terms
External Reference Layout An AutoCAD function used to share the graphical contents of one or more drawings with other drawings. Used to represent a single sheet in a contract drawing set. The layout is a tab that contains a title block and viewport(s), and has details of the associated printer and paper size. A line drawn in plan view that indicates the separation between adjacent plan and profile sheets. The position of the match line is based on the length of profile alignment that will fit in the viewport. Controls the display of the match line label.
Match Line
Match Line Label Style Match Line Style Reference Object Sheet Set Manager View Frame
A Civil 3D function used to share Civil 3D object data residing in one or more other drawings. An AutoCAD utility used for the creation and management of individual sheets within a drawing set. A model space object that shows the plan view portion of the model that is displayed in a plan sheet or a plan and profile sheet. Controls the display of the view frame label.
View Frame Label Style View Frame Style View Frame Group
18-8
NOTES
A drawing template with layout definitions is used to determine the size of the view frames. The viewport size and scale on the layout is used to determine the size of the view frames. The layout definition in the drawing template also contains the sheet border that will be used when the sheets are created. Civil 3D creates view frames and match lines and organizes them in a view frame group on the Prospector tab of the Toolspace window.
You must complete this exercise before completing the other exercises in this module. For this exercise, open \Module 18 Roadway Plan Production\ I_RoadwayPlanProduction-EX1.dwg (M_RoadwayPlanProduction-EX1.dwg).

How are view frames organized? 6. Describe how you can edit the position of the view frames? 7. What are the three options available when creating sheets? 8. How is Sheet Set Manager used? 9. When creating sheets, under what circumstances are external references and reference objects used? 10. Can Civil 3D Plan Production be used to create cross-section sheets?
Answers
1. An AutoCAD external reference is used to share AutoCAD graphical data between drawings. A Civil 3D reference object is used to share Civil 3D object data between drawings. 2. The view frame is the model space object that surrounds an area that is displayed when a sheet is created. 3. The match line is a line drawn in plan view that indicates the separation between adjacent sheets. The position of the match line is based on the length of profile alignment that fits in the viewport. 4. The viewport size and scale in the referenced layout in the drawing template (DWT) controls the size of the view frames. 5. View frames are organized in a view frame group. The view frame group is shown as a collection on the Prospector tab of the Toolspace window. 6. You can use grips to control the position of the view frames in model space. The green circle-shaped grip is used to rotate the view frame. The blue diamond grip is used to position the view frame along the alignment. The blue square grip is used to move the view frame to any position.
18-32
NOTES
7. When you create sheets you can i) create all sheets in the current drawing, ii) create all sheets in a new drawing, or iii) create all sheets in individual drawings. 8. Sheet Set Manager is used to manage the sheets in a sheet set, regardless of how they were created. 9. External references and reference objects are used when you create sheets in new drawings. 10. Civil 3D Plan Production tools cannot be used to create cross-section sheets. There are, however, other methods for producing cross-section sheets such as cross-section group plot styles and map books.

Module Summary
In this module, you learned how to use the AutoCAD Civil 3D Plan Production tools to create plan and profile sheets. The first step was to create the view frames, which show the plan view areas that are displayed in the individual sheets. The view frames were positioned and sized based on layout definitions residing in a drawing template file (DWT). After the view frames were created, you used grips to modify the position of the view frames. The next step was to generate the sheets. First, sheets were generated with all layouts in the current drawing. Next, sheets were generated with all layouts in a new drawing, and then sheets were generated in individual drawings with one layout for each sheet. Finally, you learned how to use AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager to manage the sheets within a sheet set.
