8 Hunger That Cannot Be Satisfied

By Marcel Malgo
The words of Amos 8:11-12 speak clearly of a spiritual hunger for the Word of God, which cannot be satisfied. The prophet Amos had to proclaim divine judgment to the ten tribes of Israel because of their apostasy. Could it be that in our day also a hunger for the Word of God is there, but that this can no longer be satisfied?

According to some teachers, Proverbs 13:22 means that the Church will soon inherit the wealth of the wicked. They believe there will be a massive, worldwide, last-day gathering of souls, for which this wealth will be used. But can any of these ideas be broadly supported in Scripture?

Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD

his God out of the fish's belly (Jonah 2:1).

onah finds himself in the belly of a specially prepared great fish. It is significant that the time span is given, three days and three nights. Quite logically, we assume that three days and three nights would equal 72 hours. Let us therefore take a closer look at this issue relating to the three days and the three nights. The book of Jonah is counted among the 12 Minor Prophets. Thus, it is a prophetic book. The content is targeted toward the Gentiles primarily, on water to the Gentile sailors and on land to the city of Nineveh. At one particular instance, Jesus made reference to Jonah and Nineveh. This occurred at the time when the Pharisees asked for a sign: Master, we would see a sign from thee. We read the response: But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was

three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth (Matthew 12:39-40). Every Easter, this issue is brought up by many who insist that Christ was not crucified the day before Sabbath, that is, on Friday. This is primarily based on the assumption that three days and three nights require 72 hours to fulfill this prophecy. But if we carefully follow the events of the Crucifixion to the Resurrection, we may come to a different conclusion. In the Gospel of Luke we read, This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on (Luke 23:52-54). There is no doubt that Christ died Friday evening. The Sabbath begins at sunset Friday, the sixth day of the week. The preparation day for the Sabbath ends the evening of Friday. Then they

rested on the Sabbath Day, as is recorded in Luke 23:56: And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. Next we read, Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again (Luke 24:1-7). This is fulfillment of Bible prophecy: the third day rise again. We must take notice that it does not say after three days but on the third day. We have another testimony on that same day: But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done (Luke 24:21). They too testified that to day is the third day. The disciples knew something we apparently overlook, namely that the Lord's death on Friday evening and His resurrection early Sunday morning fulfills the required three days and three nights. If Christ will have laid in the grave only but one split second, it would count unto Him for one day and one night. Why? Because that one split second violated the entire one day. Note very carefully that it says, they came very early in the morning. John actually records, early when it was yet dark and Mark specifically mentioned that it was very early in the morning, the first day of the week (Mark 16:2). To understand this better, let us look at another example in Scripture: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all (James 2:10). The law is very complex: it not only includes the 10 commandments but much more. Yet if one little law is broken, though the person has kept perfectly the rest of the law, he is guilty of all. Jonah prophetically demonstrated the death, burial and resurrection of Christ our Lord. The other issue much debated is whether Jonah died in the belly of the great fish and then was resurrected, or whether he stayed alive the entire time. I would agree with the latter, because the Bible specifically tells us Jonah prayed out of the fish's belly. Prophetic Prayer Here is Jonah's testimony of his prayer: And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of

The object of Midnight Call is to call people everywhere to Christ, to proclaim the Second Coming of Christ, to prepare Christians for His coming, and to uphold the faith and warn of false doctrines. Midnight Call magazine is available in twelve languages. All work done through radio, literature and missionaries is supported entirely by the gifts and free will offerings of Gods people. STATEMENT OF FAITH WE BELIEVE in the divine inspiration of the whole Bible and therewith the infallibility of the Holy Scripture, which is Gods Word, and in the eternal Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. WE BELIEVE Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, and shed His blood to save mankind. He died and arose bodily the third day and later ascended into heaven. WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ died in the place of each individual sinner and that all who believe in Him as their personal Savior are justified through His shed blood and have become children of God. WE BELIEVE that Israel is Gods chosen people, and that the restoration of the Jews to their own land is the fulfillment of the Word of God. WE BELIEVE in the pretribulational appearance of Jesus Christ for the Rapture of His Church (all born again believers). WE BELIEVE in the immortality of our souls and the resurrection of our bodies, and in the resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting blessedness of the saved and the everlasting punishment of the lost.

hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me (Jonah 2:2-3). What is significant is that Jonah was fully convinced that God heard him. He describes the depths of hell, although this was not the hell of fire, but the hell of water and being swallowed alive by a fish. His confidence is expressed in verse 4: Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. He cast himself totally in the providence of God, in the most horrible situation one can think of. Read his prayer: The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple (verses 5-7). Jonah finds himself in the depths of the waters, in total darkness with no hope of surviving this catastrophe alive. He too could have prayed as David did when he cried the words Jesus later uttered on the cross, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Psalm 22:1). When one reads this Psalm, one is overwhelmed by David's expression of his lostness: I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture (Psalm 22:10-18). David prophetically foreshadows the suffering of the Messiah. His hand and feet were pierced and the very garment of the Lord was offered by the casting of lots. Now look at Jonah; he has no other refuge than the Lord and concentrates upon God's residence: into thine holy temple. What seems strange is the fact that in this prayer, Jonah does not confess his sins, failure, and disobedience, but expresses his position in the Lord; total reliance on Him. His prayer proves beyond a shadow of doubt that Jonah had a deep and abiding faith in the God of heaven and earth; he had the absolute inner conviction and assurance that while he was alive he would be saved from corruption. This too reminds us of the Lord, of whom we

read in another Psalm: For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption (Psalm 16:10). Jonah's body did not corrupt in the belly of the fish. Jonah is a testimony of the reality of the Living Lord in word and in deed: They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD (Jonah 2:8-9). There is no salvation outside the name which is above every name, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jonah's prayer presents to us a prophetic picture of being forsaken by God on the one hand, yet having the absolute assurance of personal salvation on the other. God Himself determined the end of Jonah's three days and three nights in the whale's belly: And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land (Jonah 2:10). Whether people want to hear it or not, when we have come to a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we must proclaim the saving message of the Gospel to them in word and deedfor there will come a time when it will be too late!

The ten tribes of Israel had rejected the words of God that Amos had to proclaim to them because the people did not want to hear them. Amos could preach in the neighbouring country of Judah, but not in Israel.
Engraving of the Prophet Amos by Gustave Dor (1891)

ven in the Old Testament the Lord spoke the earnest warning, When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand(Ezekiel 3:18). We sometimes take it for granted that there are only born-again Christians present when we preach, or amongst our readers. Who is to say, however, whether this is the case? For this reason, with this contribution I want to take upon myself the responsibility of which we have just read in the book of Ezekiel. I shall not only speak about the absolute necessity of a thorough conversion, but above all that this may not be put off, for that would be fatal! I would like to begin with the words of Amos 8:11-12, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord; and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it. These words speak clearly of a spiritual hunger for the Word of God, which cannot be satisfied. How is such a thing possible? The prophet Amos had to proclaim divine judgment to the ten tribes of Israel because they had fallen away from the Lord. When we see how this apostasy was expressed, we can perhaps understand why the Lord God had to resort to these severe measures.

Israel's apostasy was expressed among other things in how they rejected the Word of God. God had to say to them through Amos, I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord. But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not

(Amos 2:11-12). In Amos 7:10 we hear the false priest, Amaziah of Bethel say to Jeroboam, the king of Israel, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. Farther on Amaziah says to Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: but prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court(verses 12-13). The ten tribes of Israel had rejected the words of God that Amos had to proclaim to them because the people did not want to hear them. Amos could preach in the neighbouring country of Judah, but not in Israel. With this background in mind, we can understand what God had determined: there would come a time in which the exact opposite would take

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord; and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.
place. Then Israel would seek the Word of God and not find it; she would desire it in vain, and hunger for it in vain. The Lord God did not choose this punishment lightly. He had, after all, tried to lead the people through hunger for real bread back to Himself, but His attempts were all in vain, And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord(Amos 4:6). So God turned to other tactics. He sent a hunger for His Word to the land, without Israel being able to satisfy this hunger. When God is silent Somebody said in our church recently, When God is silent this means judgment. But the Bible also speaks of God's silence being love, The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing(Zephaniah 3:17). The Amplified Bible translates this, He will rest in His love, He will rest and in His love He will be silent. This silence, as we see from the context, has to do with restoration and forgiveness, therefore we may not confuse it with the silence of which Amos speaks. The silence of God which Amos speaks of is a terrible silence. It is something we can hardly imagine. Let us go back a little farther in history. Why was the time when Samuel served the Lord under Eli so

awful? It was because the Word of God was no longer heard, And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision(1 Samuel 3:1). The word of the Lord was rare, says the New International Version. God hardly spoke in those days. And what was the worst thing for King Saul when he had been rejected by God? The fact that God no longer spoke to him, And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets(1 Samuel 28:5-6). King Saul was so desperate on account of this, for he wanted to hear God speak, that he turned to a means that he had completely exterminated at the beginning of his reign. He visited a medium, Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her(verse 7). And sure enough, they found one who had survived his reforms, And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at En-dor. It is a terrible thing when God no longer speaks. Does God still cease to speak today? Could it be that in our day a hunger for the Word of God is there, but that this can no longer be satisfied? To receive a clear, Biblical answer to this question, I would like to mention a few people who

Certainly a person can be converted on his deathbed, but the question is whether he missed every opportunity he had. And nobody can say whether they will be able to think clearly on their deathbed and make a clear decision for Jesus.
never came to God although they often heard His voice. We may suppose that in the Western world almost everyone has heard God calling them at some point in their lives and know full well that He exists; most of them also know of His Son, Jesus Christ. But God does not call people again and again. There comes a time when it is too late for people who are not converted, at a point in time determined by God. Those who have not had a radical change of heart by then, by claiming the atoning death of the Lord Jesus Christ for themselves, have missed their chance. Why is this so? Because one day the moment comes when God stops speaking to a person. Then it will no longer be possible to be converted and born again. Those who have not done this, although they heard God's voice and maybe even agreed with Him, will never hear it again. Perhaps someone is saying, But is it not so that as long as a person lives he has the chance of being converted? Certainly a person can be converted on his deathbed, but the question is whether he missed every opportunity he had. And nobody can say whether they will be able to think clearly on their deathbed and make a clear decision for Jesus. A short while ago I stood by the grave of a 16year old boy who had been taken from this earth through sudden heart failure. I know that he is now with his Saviour because he had already accepted the Lord Jesus during his lifetime. The book of Job speaks of a sinner upon whom the judgment of God had come with all severity, but then suddenly the forgiving love of God appeared to this man, who prayed to the Lord to have mercy on him. In Job 33:27-28 we read, He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. But this song of deliverance is followed by the important teaching, Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man, to bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living(verses 29-30). Here again the New International Version has an alternative translation, God does all these things to a mantwice, even three timesto turn back his soul from the pit. In other words, when an incorrigible sinner ignores this repeated, clear voice of God, he can not reckon with grace any longer, even if he desires it. I want to return to King Saul. On account of his continual disobedience, God no longer spoke to him. In his desperation, therefore, he sought a medium. What is so terrible about this example? It is that Saul hungered after God's voice, that he desired to hear Him speakbut he could no longer hear Him, And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by

Urim, nor by prophets(1 Samuel 28:5-6). Is God still silent today, or can we say that under the new covenant, in which the grace of Jesus reigns, this can no longer happen? The writer of the letter to the Hebrews warns us, Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him?(Hebrews 2:1-3). And in Hebrews 12:25 it says, See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. These two texts speak of incorrigible sinners in the Old Testament, and then explain that there is no difference between them and stubborn sinners in the New Testament. This means that just as God punished people who did not want to come to Him in spite of His continual calling and warning under the old covenant, He can also do this under the new covenant. Whether or not He does this is subject to His sovereign will, but it is a fact that He can and does do this, whether we like it or not.

The thief on the cross Not everyone who persistently resists God's calling is given the grace the thief on the cross received to be able to be converted shortly before dying. It can even be that people suddenly realize in the hour of their death that they have neglected the most important thing in life and yet they cannot turn around. Suddenly they realize, I should have received Jesus then. They are hungry, they desire the chance to turn around, but this is no longer possible. We know of the atheist, David Hume, who at his death exclaimed, I am in flames! The death of Voltaire, the famous/infamous mocker, must have been so terrible that the nurse caring for him said afterwards, I would not see another unbeliever die for all the money in Europe! Thomas Hobbes, an English philosopher, who had spent all his life explaining away the existence of God, said shortly before his death, I am standing before a terrible plunge into darkness. And Goethe cried when his departure from this earth had come, More light! On his gravestone it said, Here lies Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. All his life he was lucky, but he was never happy. Finally the great English statesman, Sir Winston Churchill, when he died went to eternity with the words, What a fool I've been! on his lips.

cleansing of their sins. Are you one of these Christians? If so, then I must earnestly warn you, for the day will come when it will be too late for you too. Perhaps you will try to come to God at the last moment, because you have a certain hunger for Him. But it will not be possible, because God is no longer speaking, and no liberating and redeeming words from heaven can reach you! The artist Pablo Picasso was once asked the question, which of his colleagues was the greatest artist, in his opinion. He answered, Peter Paul Rubens, for he created roughly 600 paintings in his lifetime, of which 2,700 still remain! It is surely clear what Picasso meant with his answer, for there are nowhere so many forgeries as in the world of art. Is this really the case? No, my dear reader, for there is another sphere in which perfect fakes are in circulation: amongst Christians. How many so-called Christians are not genuine because they have never been born again? I want to ask you urgently, therefore, if you have heard the voice of the Lord through this message, then turn around and go the whole way with Him, For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry(Hebrews 10:37). Is this the last chance for you to be converted? To be saved makes you want to save I want to say to all my readers who have already accepted Jesus, let us never cease to thank the Lord that we belong to the saved! What does it mean that we are saved? We read in Malachi 3:17, And they

The last words of these men testify of a sudden but bitter awakening. Did they all have the desire for it to be different? If God had spoken to these people at that moment when they suddenly came to understand, and given them a last chance to turn around, would they have taken advantage of it? Probably they would have, but now it was too late for them. We have to assume that God no longer spoke to them. They could no longer come to Him because they had missed their chance. The Lord God had warned these men earnestly during their lifetime, but because they did not heed his warning, they missed eternal life and were ultimately lost. Are your sins forgiven? My dear reader, who among you is saying to himself or herself in the depths of his or her heart, I should come to Jesus Christ, but up to this day has not taken this step? There are so many Christians who go to church on Sunday, sing in their church choir, participate in the prayer meeting, or even teach children in Sunday School, yet they have no real relationship with Jesus Christ because they have not yet claimed His atoning blood for the

Unsaved children are convinced when we as fathers are loving in our contact with them. This is why Paul admonishes, Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged(Colossians 3:21).
What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?(2 Samuel 9:8). Those who have found Jesus Christ through sheer grace should have hearts full of compassion for those who are not yet saved. Does that mean that Christian women should preach to their yet unconverted husbands about their sinful lives and about death and damnation? No, unbelieving husbands are far more likely to be saved when their wives obey the Word of God as it is written in 1 Peter 3:1, Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation (behaviourNew International Version) of the wives. Or must Christian fathers threaten their children or punish them if they do not read the Bible or come to church? Certainly not! Unsaved children are convinced when we as fathers are loving in our contact with them. This is why Paul admonishes, Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged(Colossians 3:21). How can we have a heart full of compassion for a lost world? When we become like Jesus, of whom it says, But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd(Matthew 9:36). How can we become like Jesus? When we obey the Word of God unconditionally, as Jesus obeyed His Father (John 5:19 and Philippians 2:8). What obedience produces Israel was destined to show the surrounding nations that there is only one God. They were given clear instructions as to how they were to carry out this task, Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of

shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. We are confronted here with three glorious spiritual truths: 1. We belong to the Lord. 2. The Lord will spare us. 3. We are sons or children of the Lord. Those who know Jesus and belong to Him should continually think of these three truths and give thanks for them. When we think that in this world, perhaps in our nearest vicinity, there are people who do not know Jesus, we cannot do otherwise than to kneel down and say, Lord, who am I that You should have mercy on me, that you should save me? When the Lord God made a covenant with David through the prophet Nathan, David had to say, Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that thou hast brought me hithterto?(2 Samuel 7:18). And later on when David invited Miphibosheth, the son of Jonathan, to dine at his table daily, it says, And he bowed himself, and said,

For every person who has hunger and thirst for the Word of God, it is not too late if you begin now to eat and drink, if you receive the Lord Jesus into your life. But if this hunger only arises when the one concerned is at the gateway to eternity, it could be too late.
Israel(Exodus 19:5-6). Israel was to be a blessing on earth so that the other nations could come into contact with the God of Israel. The prophet Isaiah also speaks of this, This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise(Isaiah 43:21). If Israel had kept the covenant of the Lord through obedience, and done what Malachi says, Remember ye the law of Moses my servantwith the statutes and judgments(Malachi 4:4), then this blessing would have been passed on to the nations at that time. Even with Abraham, obedience of faith was decisive. After he had been prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac, God said to him, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice (Genesis 22:16-18). Later on this truth was proclaimed to the whole nation of Israel, And the Lord hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; and to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken(Deuteronomy 26:1819). Israel would have become a blessing to the surrounding nations if she had obeyed the Lord's commandments with all her heart. It is the same for us. We can only be a blessing for the unsaved people around us if we walk in the ways of the Lord with all our hearts. Peter writes in his first letter, Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light(1 Peter 2:9). We are called to proclaim the praises of the Lord. Peter explains two verses farther on just who is in a position to do this, Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation(verses 11-12). We can barely imagine what possibilities, what power and what authority lie in a life which is surrendered to Christ. Something wonderful can emanate from your life if you walk with Jesus Christ with all your heart. Do you not want to arouse hunger and thirst in other people who have not yet found Jesus, by surrendering yourself to Him completely, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. For every person who has hunger and thirst for the Word of God, it is not too late if you begin now to eat and drink, if you receive the Lord Jesus into your life. But if this hunger only arises when the one concerned is at the gateway to eternity, it could be too late. As we have already mentioned, it is not definite whether you will have the possibility of accepting Jesus then. It is irrevocably too late for a person if he has entered into eternity; then the possibility of making a decision is over. To the indecisive, unregenerate people amongst my readers I want to call, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts(Hebrews 3:15)! And to the Christians among my readers I want to say, And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them Mitternachtsruf 0303 out of the fire(Jude 22-23). MC

Amillennialism does not deny the literal return of Jesus Christ (which is taught to occur at the consummation of the church age), but it does communicate falsely that the church age is presently the kingdom of God; therefore (according to the amillennial view) there will not be a future literal reign of Jesus Christ on the earth.

s deduced from the statement in Revelation 20:4 (...and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years), the word millennium is derived from the Latin mille (thousand) and annum (year). The early church referred to the millennium by the Greek term, chiliasm. In conservative theology, there are three major views concerning the nature of the thousand years of Revelation 20. How one understands the millennium will also influence views concerning the details of eschatology.1 Currently, amillennialism and premillennialism are the dominant views of the millennium (postmillennialism was dominant among early liberalism; however, today it is dominant only among Reconstructionists, leaders within the Word of Faith Movement, and the cults). There are hermeneutical (interpretative) reasons for the differences, such as whether to understand thousand in Revelation 20 as literal or symbolic.2 The purpose of this article is not to examine these differences per se, but to explain the doctrine of the kingdom and its relationship to the church. When appropriate, premillennial doctrine will be regarded as the biblical teaching. The millennium is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, and includes not only spiritual blessings, but also glorious expectation. Specifically, the term premillennialism refers to the future literal reign of Jesus Christ on David's throne in Jerusalem. Premillennialism is in contrast to amillennialism and postmillennialism. Amillennialism does not deny the literal return of Jesus Christ (which

is taught to occur at the consummation of the church age), but it does communicate falsely that the church age is presently the kingdom of God; therefore, (according to the amillennial view) there will not be a future literal reign of Jesus Christ on the earth. Postmillennialism also does not deny the literal return of Jesus Christ (which is taught to occur after the millennium), but it does communicate that the church will inaugurate the kingdom of God (which is not a literal thousand years but rather consisting of a long indefinite duration) through the moral and spiritual influence of Gospel preaching and teaching.

Indeed, the beginning of the church was her formation at Pentecost. Gods plan of salvation truly began when He provided the skin of an animal to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve (Gen 3:21). However, the church is not merely another phase in salvation history.
THE DOCTRINE OF THE KINGDOM Premillennialism is the biblical teaching that when Jesus Christ returns to earth, He will inaugurate His kingdom for a literal thousand years. Christ will reign personally and visibly during the millennium. This is an important distinction because many conservative evangelicals believe there is only one general, inclusive rule of God in the hearts of all His people. According to such an understanding, the kingdom of God is essentially soteriological (soteriology is the doctrine of salvation). For instance, Dr. John Walvoord explained the amillennial view.
Amillennial interpreters combine various forms of kingdom into one concept, namely, a kingdom of God. . . . In keeping with this general conclusion that all the kingdoms are phases of one kingdom idea, many hold that soteriology is the one factor that binds them all together. . . . Salvation is obviously a major part of this revelation, but not the totality. The whole theory that all kingdoms should be reduced to the soteriological equivalent is not what the Bible teaches in its doctrine of the various kingdoms.3

As Walvoord noted, the concept of the kingdom cannot be reduced to soteriology alone. There are other aspects of the kingdom in Scripture. The concept of the kingdom of God is the major theme or purpose of divine election. The entirety of world historyfrom Genesis to Revelationconcerns the progression of the kingdom of God. The doctrine of the various kingdoms of Scripture can be visualized in the following diagram. As seen in the diagram, the concept of the kingdom includes more than one aspect. The definition of a kingdom would include the following: (1) the ruler; (2) the ruled; and, (3) the realm. Walvoord noted the importance of observing that the Scriptures themselves give a detailed description of various spheres [aspects] of kingdom. Therefore, to ignore the biblical

The spiritual kingdom is God's rule over His people at all times in history (John 3:3; Col 1:13; Heb 1:4-14; 2 Pet 1:11). The ruler is the triune God. The ruled includes the elect of humanity and the angels. The realm is from eternity past to eternity future.
distinctions will result in erroneous conclusions in the doctrine of the kingdom and confusion in regards to an understanding of God's promises.4 The various aspects of the kingdom include: (1) the universal kingdom; (2) the millennial (Davidic/Messianic) kingdom; (3) the mystery form of the kingdom; (4) the spiritual kingdom; and, (5) the kingdom of man. The universal kingdom is God's sovereign rule of history from creation throughout eternity (1 Chron 29:11; Ps 96:13; 103:19; 145:913; Dan 2:37). The ruler of the universal kingdom is the triune God. The ruled is all creation (including heaven and earth). The realm is all time and eternity. It is God's inclusive sovereign rule of history from creation throughout eternity. The millennial (Davidic/Messianic) kingdom is according to God's promise to Israel (2 Sam 7:5-16; 1 Chron 17:3-15; Rev 20:1-10). The ruler of the millennial kingdom will be the King, Jesus Christ (as King David ruled in history). The ruled is the earth and its inhabitants. The realm is during the thousand year following the second coming of Jesus Christ. This kingdom could also be called the single, unified, mediatorial kingdom that existed historically under the Mosaic Covenant and was prophesied by the Old Testament prophets to be restored in its former glory at the second coming. It is the same kingdom John the Baptist preached and Jesus offered to Israel at His first coming. It is, therefore, the same kingdom that Israel rejected in the first century. The kingdom is historic, prophetic, offered, and rejected. The mystery form of the kingdom is the church age, which encompasses the period between the comings of Christ (Matt 13). The ruler of the mystery form of the kingdom is Jesus Christ. The ruled is Christendom. The realm is the period between the comings of Christ. The kingdom of man includes humanity as ruler (Gen 10-11; 11:31-12:9; Rev 17-18). The ruled, of course, is mankind. The realm began at the Tower of Babel and will culminate at the beginning of the millennial kingdom. God's blessed provision to end the kingdom of man began in history with the calling of Abram for the purpose of establishing His kingdom though the nation of Israel. THE CHURCH AND THE KINGDOM It is noteworthy that the Greek terms ekklesia (church) and basileia (kingdom) are distinguished. Enns noted, The terms church and kingdom are never used interchangeably in Scripture. Of the 114 occurrences of the word church (GK. Ekklesia), it is never equated with the kingdom.5 The uses of the terms in the New Testament indicate distinctions. Radmacher clarified, Thus, this entire advancing change of emphasis from basileia to ekklesia and back to the basileia yet to come may not be overlooked . . . it serves to emphasize the fact that the ekklesia and the basileia are two distinct entities in the eternal program of God.6 Consequently, the millennial (Davidic/Messianic) kingdom will be different from the church age. There is, however, a relationship of the church to the kingdom. Ryrie explained, If one were to try to summarize the relationship of the church to the kingdom, he would have

The church age, however, is not a component of the millennial (Davidic/ Messianic) kingdom. The kingdom was rejected by Israel at the first coming, and it will not be fulfilled until after the second coming. This kingdom is a political kingdom, whose ruler is the Lord Jesus Christ. It will commence after the second coming and bring conclusion to the Gentile world domination over the nation of Israel.

to say that it is related but not equivalent to certain concepts of the kingdom; it is unrelated to another concept; and is equivalent to another. The concept of kingdom must be defined before one can determine the relationship of the church to it. 7 The church age can be understood as a component of the universal kingdom. Since God created the church, it exists in the world as a component of the universal kingdom. God designed it, brought it into being, and rules over it, as He does all aspects of His universe. 8 The church age, however, is not a component of the millennial (Davidic/ Messianic) kingdom. The kingdom was rejected by Israel at the first coming, and it will not be fulfilled until after the second coming. This kingdom is a political kingdom, whose ruler is the Lord Jesus Christ. It will commence after the second coming and bring con20

clusion to the Gentile world domination over the nation of Israel. The millennial kingdom will remove all previous earthly kingdoms. The fulfillment of all God's promises in the covenants will be realized in the millennial kingdom. When this kingdom is established the church will have been resurrected and will reign with Christ over the millennial kingdom. 9 The church is now a component of the mystery form of the kingdom. The mystery aspect is concerning the unrevealed nature of this kingdom in the Old Testament. This aspect of the kingdom does not correspond precisely to any of the other kingdoms. It is not specifically the kingdom of God (though it includes the kingdom of God) because there are some in it who apparently are not saved.10 Therefore, the relationship of the church to the concept of the kingdom cannot be regarded as a component of other aspects of the kingdom (i.e. the millennial-Davidic/Messianic-kingdom). CONCLUSION To define the doctrine of the kingdom necessitates that one observe all the various aspects that are revealed in Scripture. These aspects of the kingdom include the universal kingdom, the millennial (Davidic/Messianic) kingdom, the mystery form of the kingdom, the spiritual kingdom, and

the kingdom of man. Each of these aspects of the kingdom is described distinctly in Scripture. Understanding the relationship of the church to the kingdom necessitates discernment regarding what aspect of the kingdom is being referenced in Scripture. The millennial kingdom is clearly distinct from the present church age, that is, the mystery form of the kingdom. However, the church will have been resurrected prior to the inauguration of the millennial kingdom and will reign with Christ in that aspect of the kingdom, as it is God's intent to rule personally and visibly upon the earth. Presently, the church is a component of the kingdom of God in the mystery form (interadvent period) of the kingdom. MC

Wicked Money and the Great Endtime Wealth Transfer

B y W i l f r e d H a h n

Many researchers today say that America is in the midst of the biggest wealth transfer ever. Some $40 to $100 trillion and more will change hands as the older generation passes off its wealth to the next generation in future years.

imilar such shifts, of course, apply everywhere. But there is yet one more great wealth transfer predicted to occur in the near future. According to some teachers, the Church with soon inherit the wealth of the wicked. Reputedly, there is a Bible verse that supports this idea. Found in Proverbs 13:22, it reads, A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. It is mainly from this one single verse that the wealth of the wicked is conjured up for divine distribution to Christians living today. But really, what does this verse mean and to whom does it apply? There seem to be a number of answers that have gained popular support in reMIDNIGHT CALL

cent years. Representing a growing view, says C. Peter Wagner, [] the body of Christ needs to come into alignment with God's declared purpose to release unprecedented amounts of wealth for the extension of His kingdom on earth.1 Wagner is one of the key proponents of the view that the transfer of the wealth of the wicked is a premillennial event and is specifically meant for the Church more precisely, his own association of churches which is under his senior apostolic authority. Dr. Wagner, who was also a major impetus behind the Church Growth Movement and the Third Wave, has much influence. Supposedly, this wealth transfer is a glorious development of the last days that enervates and honors the Church.

Wicked Money and the Great Endtime Wealth Transfer

There are quite a number of loose interpretations of Proverbs 13:22. Applied to the Church, this concept is also often linked with the teaching that a massive, world-wide, last-day ingathering of souls will yet occur. It is also well known that prosperity gospel preachers like to hang their theology on this same Scripture verse found in Proverbs, though they apply it to the individual Christian. Can any of these ideas be broadly supported in Scripture? We want to investigate. Undocumented Transfers Will the Church soon be showered with the wealth of the unrighteous, thus being able to fund the last, great global harvest of souls? Again quoting C. Peter Wagner, I think the time is ripe for those of us who are apostles to begin to understand the crucial role we have in God's plan to release the wealth of the wicked for the advance of the kingdom of God.2 But what does the Bible say? Pursuing a historical-grammatical interpretationin other words, interpreting the Bible as it readstry as one might, one cannot find this view supported in the Bible. Dealing first with the wealth transfer notion, indeed, we do find that there is a great wealth transfer prophesied in Scripture. However, it has nothing to do with the Church, but rather applies to Israel and the Millennial period. There are many more Scripture verses connecting this event to Israel, rather than the Church. Here are six: 1. You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast (Isaiah 61:6). 2. Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come (Isaiah 60:5).

3. I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream (Isaiah 66:12). 4. Rise and thresh, O Daughter of Zion, for I will give you horns of iron; I will give you hoofs of bronze and you will break to pieces many nations. You will devote their ill-gotten gains to the LORD, their wealth to the Lord of all the earth (Micah 4.13). 5. Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut, day or night, so that men may bring you the wealth of the nations-their kings led in triumphal procession (Isaiah 60:11). 6. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected-great quantities of gold and silver and clothing (Zechariah 14:14). There are additional indications of a great wealth transfer prophesied in the Old Testament. Their context refers to the same general time-late in the Tribulation and early Millennial period. For example, a prophecy applying to Tyre-this city being a prefigurement of the godless commercial systems that aligns with the Babylon the Great of Revelation 18-speaks of wealth being set aside for those who live before the Lord. At the end of seventy years, the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her hire as a prostitute and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the LORD; they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothes (Isaiah 23:17-18). While this is not an exhaustive list of references, we have at least established broad Scriptural support for Israel being

Will the Church soon be showered with the wealth of the unrighteous, thus being able to fund the last, great global harvest of souls?

By Wilfred Hahn

However, the Bible says directly otherwise. Clearly implying that there would be little faith upon earth when He returns, Christ asked the rhetorical question: When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:8).

the recipient. Interestingly, there is not one verse we can find in the New Testament that even indirectly refers to a great endtime wealth transfer. Even the book of Revelation is silent on this topic, though it refers to the destruction of the wealth of Babylon the Great, which will never be recovered (Revelation 18:14). Assuredly, if such wealth were to be transferred to the Church, support for this concept would have been found in the New Testament. Instead, there we only find admonishments about the deceitfulness of wealth and how the faith of many will grow cold due to the cares of this life. The Great Wealth Transfer Received If there is any concept of the wealth of the sinner being transferred to the righteous, it clearly applies to the beginning Millennial period and not to any previous time. As such, Proverbs 13:22 is clearly taken out of context by the Third Wave group of movements. This verse is not a prophecy, but rather, like most of the wisdom literature of Proverbs, only points to general principles or ideals. In fact, in the very same chapter are found two additional statements about the wicked: Misfortune pursues the sinner, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous (verse 22); and, The righteous eat to their hearts' content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry (verse 25). Again, neither of these can be prophecies. For one, there will be neither misfortune nor hunger in the Millennial period, nor will there be any wicked during that time to have such experiences. Secondly, as general physical principles, the two maxims in these verses are simply not observable upon earth during this present dispensation. Other Scriptures clearly point out that the wicked do enjoy their riches and that God indeed allows the rain to fall upon both the wicked and

righteous. (For example, see Job 21:7-9, Psalm 73:12.) There are many other problems with the last-day wealth transfer notion applying to the Church. For example, it is claimed that there will yet be a last-day global harvest before the Lord returns, and that the Church will need great wealth to fund this objective as well as eradicating poverty in the world. Says Wagner, In order to possess the gate of wealth to, among other things, develop plans to eradicate systemic poverty, we need to develop new structures of intercession to do the spiritual warfare necessary to transfer wealth.3 However, the Bible says directly otherwise. Clearly implying that there would be little faith upon earth when He returns, Christ asked the rhetorical question: When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:8). Sadly, whatever great harvests there might yet be, only a very small number of believers will remain at the time of Christ's return. Other Scriptures also underline this general cold spiritual condition of the last days. In addition, with respect to the poor, Christ said that they would be with us always (Matthew 26:11), indicating that the fallen state of mankind was not going to be successfully transformed by the social initiatives of the Church or any other organization. A final point to consider in our brief review is that if the Church must first wait for one great and final ingathering before being raptured (as the Third Wave prophets and so-called apostles such as Dr. Wagner prophesy), then the Biblical principle of imminency is obviated. However, nothing more is required to happen before the Rapture can occur. It is imminent. As such, it would be strange that the Holy Spirit himself would enable modern-

Wicked Money and the Great Endtime Wealth Transfer

day prophets and apostles to foretell that one great ingathering is yet ahead. If that were so, the Rapture would need to wait and the Trinity would have internal contradictions of truth. As it is, if there is any last-day ingathering prophesied in the Bible, perhaps this could occur within the Tribulation period, though this view is also not without its problems. Here may be involved the 144,000 that are sealed or the final Christian converts that may respond to the angel that had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth-to every nation, tribe, language and people (Revelation 14:6). However, the text gives us no indication as to how many people might respond, if any. Therefore we cannot prove that a great gathering would occur then either, though there surely will be believers during that time (See Revelation 20:4). Respect for Scripture So is there a great, last-day wealth transfer to the Church? Scripture easily and clearly settles this question. Yet, theologians who should have sufficient knowledge of what the Bible says4 instead prefer to trust their own intuitions and prophecies. This recent statement from Apostle Peter (also known as C. Peter Wagner) provides an example of such vanity, in which he appears to make his own decrees supersede Scripture. Spoken on the great reverential authority of the claimed office of an early New Testament apostle, he literally commands the earth's obedience. Not even the first Apostle Peter spoke with such licence. (One also wonders why the foundations of the New Jerusalem will be named after the original 12 apostles and not more? -See Revelation 21:14.) I hereby take the apostolic authority that I have been given by God I decree

that vast amounts of wealth will be released supernaturally, even from godless and pagan sources. I decree that large numbers of God's chosen people will be empowered in fresh and creative ways to gain wealth according to Deuteronomy 8:18. New inventions will multiply. Disruptive technologies will change the life patterns of the whole human race. The earth will disgorge vast riches of hidden resources. These will be entrusted to God's agents. Profits will increase exponentially. It is spoken. So may it come to pass! Amen and amen!5 Today, as all too frequently with other Third Wave Christian movements supposedly marked by fresh moves of the Spirit, new or revised theologies have been revealed on the strength of new prophecies uttered by their own prophets. The serious issue here is that these prophecies serve to revise what God originally said through his prophets and Scripture. Indeed, such revisions are not a new phenomenon, having been the mark of many if not all apostate movements or beliefs. These prophecies reveal a lack of reverence and respect for what God has said. Consider that Christ himself never once claimed to correct or revise any jot or tittle of the Scripture and the Prophets. Jesus, though he was God, could not and did not have the temerity to revise and improve upon the testimony of the prophets. Yet, such conceit and disrespect of Scripture is legion amongst all revisionists. Doing so, they reject authority and slander celestial beings (Jude 1:8). This was true of Mohammed (who claimed his mission was to revise and correct the previous prophets, including Christ) and to-

Laodicean church that is being reprimanded by Christ. The Bible says, The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10). We therefore must ask: Is the spirit behind these prophecies of great wealth and power coming to the Church the testimony of the Spirit of Jesus? (Acts 16:7, Philippians 1:19). Such riches would surely corrupt for wealth is deceitful (Matthew 13:22). Christ pointed to the importance of true riches for His followers and the Church, saying: So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone elses property, who will give you property of your own? (Luke 16:11-12) Where should we look for wealth and power? day of many claimed Christian denominations from Roman Catholicism (namely, its Magisterium) to a growing number of Protestant sects. Thoughts to Ponder The Bible does prophesy a major endtime wealth transfer. It is not to the Church, but rather to Israel and the righteous of the Millennial Kingdom. Yet, some churches today do hanker after worldly power and have set their eyes upon monetary wealth. As America itself is in the midst of the largest wealth transfer in history, says the website of PhilanthroCorp, a fundraising consultancy, Churches can capitalize on the opportunity presented by this huge wealth transfer by pursuing a strategic planned giving program.6 In fact, the apostate church and its many daughters, shown as Mystery Babylon the Whore in Revelation 18, are well on their way to a full union with commercial Babylon of Revelation 18. The grand last-day ecumenical lie of serving both God and Mammon is far advanced. Since this is impossibilityYou cannot serve both God and Money. (Matthew 6:24) it is really a movement in which Mammon has robed itself in the garb of religion and apparent Christian godliness. The true Church of the last days, if anything, is more of a remnant than being resplendent with wealth. Revelation 3:8 says that the church of the open door is weak and feeble; far from being imbued with worldly power and wealth. It is this little Philadelphian band of believers, to which is promised, Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth (Revelation 3:10). If the Third Wave movements are correct, one wonders why it is the rich

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night...that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless (2 Peter 3:10-l4).

Jesus is Coming
There has been much discussion over and much written about the words, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God. Some people think that we as Christians can actually influence or hasten the return of Jesus Christ. Others say that this is impossible, as God, who alone knows the day and the hour, has already determined the time of the return of the Son of God. From the Amplified Bible we see that the word hasting can be translated expecting or hastening. So actually what is important is that we are prepared for the day of Jesus return for the Rapture and for eternity. How can we be prepared for this? We must pursue holiness and godliness We see this from 2 Peter 3:ll, Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. Because man can never attain to the holiness of God of himself, and is not capable of living a holy life, God has already done everything for him in the Lord Jesus Christ. He has opened the door that was closed to us. Only through Him can we be saved: But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption (l Corinthians l:30). Through Jesus Christ and His work on Calvarys cross, we are made acceptable to God and are saved. Through Him we come: out of fear of God to joy in Him. from fear of the Judge to comfort in the Father. from flight from God to refuge in God. from hiding because of guilt to being able to come into the light for forgiveness. Jesus is the way to heaven, for, as we have already seen, He was made to be our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Jesus Christ is Gods great offer of forgiveness of sins and eternal fellowship with the Father. This offer only has to be accepted. This is the grace of God, that He does not give us what we deserve, but what we do not deserve.

Man boasts of and lives for things that have no value as far as eternity is concerned, but are destined to perish. Everything earthly is temporal, which is why the Bible says they will be dissolved. But eternity is forever.
If we believe in Jesus, we should await eternity and concentrate on it with all our hearts Whoever believes in Jesus should be looking for the coming of the day of God, be hastening towards it and preparing themselves for it. We should see temporal things in the light of eternity, Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolvedlook for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness (2 Peter 3:ll-l3). We should bear in mind that all that is earthly and visible has no permanent duration and will be dissolved, because the Lord will make a new heaven and a new earth, in which eternal righteousness will dwell and everything will be immortal. Material things bear the signs of mortality. The Bible says in the Old Testament, The people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire (Jeremiah 5l:58). In the New Testament we are told, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the worldbut he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever (l John 2:15-l7). Richand yet poor I read of a man who had everything and yet nothing. He had a coin-operated telephone installed in his castle so that guests and staff could not telephone at his expense. He got friends and acquaintances to give him a lift so that he could spare the expense of a taxi. He had the windows of his stately home fitted with bars. He hated the many letters begging for money that reached his desk daily. And he envied other people who were younger and happier than he was.

Jesus is Coming

This was Paul Getty, the richest man in the world in his time. On a British television program there was a portrait of the American oil magnate, whose name was spoken with reverence by financial experts all over the world. He was called The Lonely Billionaire. Getty earned over a million dollars a day through his participation in great oil companies. But how did he live? What did his life consist of? What gave him joy? The lonely old man was seen with his trained guard dogs walking through the parks and through the gigantic rooms of the castle. I have a lot to do, he said. From the way he spoke, his almost immoveable face which seldom showed the hint of a smile, and his cold eyes it was clear: for this man only business and money counted. Paul Getty was married five times. His wives left him. For him business always came first. He had everythingand yet nothing. Man boasts of and lives for things that have no value as far as eternity is concerned, but are destined to perish. Everything earthly is temporal, which is why the Bible says they will be dissolved. But eternity is forever. Christians who know of this truth do well to turn away from the toys and tinsel of this world and to live their lives turned towards God and His eternity. This does not mean that they have to flee from the world or that they may not use the things of this world. That would not be realistic. As born-again Christians, we live in this world, and have to live with it and through it. But we should live in, with and through this world to be able to live for God. We should attach the correct value to things and

yourselvesand to stand before the Son of man. Excessive drinking and an extravagant lifestyle are just as much sin as being overcome by the cares of daily life. As born-again Christians, we want our lives to be like the life of the Lord Jesus, to be conformed to His image. In our own strength we can never accomplish this, for our lives are too full of faults. This is why we may hope in His grace and put our trust in it, so that ye come behind in no giftby whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord (l Corinthians l:7-9). If you love His appearing and long for the revelation of the Lord Jesus, you will automatically adapt your life accordingly. You will then experience the faithfulness of God in your life, and He will complete His work in us as it pleases Him. The best way to sanctification is the longing for the return of Jesus. We must prepare for the return of Jesus today, for when He suddenly comes there will be no more time. This is shown to us clearly in the parable of the ten virgins. When the call came, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him (Matthew 25:6), for five of them it was too late because they did not prepare early enough and did not have enough oil in their vessels (verses 7-l2). Therefore, receive Gods unspeakable gift in His beloved Son. Come today, now, with all your sins and cares to Jesus Christ and ask Him for forgiveness. He will forgive you, give you His Spirit and give you a longing for Him and His appearing in your heart. To those of you who are already children of God, wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Mitternachtsruf 0500 Christ alone. MC

seek first the kingdom of God. It is necessary for us to put more emphasis on the spiritual than the material, attach more value to the eternal and less to the transitory. The Lord Jesus warned us, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal (Matthew 6:l9-20). We should bear in mind that one day we shall stand before Jesus: Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless (2 Peter 3:l4). We are awaiting eternity, a new heaven, and a new earth; therefore we want to please Him with all our hearts and in all things. Someone once said: The life of the Christian is no longer determined by fear of evil and threats, but by the light of the coming day on which Jesus will return. This leads them to behaviour which does not need to fear the light like licentious behaviour or secret vices. In Luke 2l:34-36 we are told what belongs to preparing for the return of Jesus, And take heed to

any readers who have been receiving Midnight Call for years know that this ministry was launched in 1955 through radio, particularly Radio Luxemburg, the station that covered all of Europe and beyond. Since those days, Midnight Call Radio has not ceased to broadcast. Now, with satellite radio and television, global reach is possible. In the future, we will provide more information about our radio outreach. As Christians, we are obligated to send forth the message of salvation to all people everywhere whenever opportunity presents itself. The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Timothy 4:2: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. We must note that the above verse is found in the midst of judgment that is proclaimed

upon the people. It is the Lords intention, which He will fulfill in due time. Yet the earth shall be filled with the knowledge and the glory of the Lord. The prophet Isaiah also made this statement: They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:9). When God, through His prophets, proclaims judgment, He always includes grace. The opportunity is given to repent, to seek the Lord, and to search for His truth. This is the revelation of the twoedged sword, which divides truth from lie, reward from judgment, and glory from damnation. Gods intention to save is clearly expressed in 1 Timothy 2:4: Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Will all

men be saved? The Scripture is clear on this matter, and the answer is no. Why not? Because man, inspired by the enemy of GodSatanrefuses to come to the knowledge of the truth. Yet, we must add, many will and continue to come to the Truth: they come to Jesus, who declared, I am the Truth. Therefore, dear brethren, let us diligently go forward in the task the Lord has placed into our hands, because He will accomplish His will through those who are obedient.

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation!
Dear friends of Radio New Hope:

In Mark 16:15 our Lord says: Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation! We want to obey this Great Commission, and we particularly want to do this through the radio work of RNH. As you already know from previous newsletters, RNH is broadcasting 24/7 via the Hotbird satellite since January 1, 2008. Now 150 million households can be reached with the message of the gospel via Astra and Hotbird. This is a great joy for us, but it is a great responsibility and challenge, too. Our greatest concern is the production of quality programs. This is why we continue to look for good program partners who are ready to broadcast their programs via RNH and to whom we are offering this free service. Since April 1, 2008, our variety of programs has been even greater. For instance, we began broadcasting the program Radio Bible School by the Bible Center Breckerfeld. Missionswerk Mitternachtsruf (Midnight Call) also began broadcasting its Sunday services from our church Zionshalle near Zurich every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. We have also added new lectures of Professor Werner Gitt and messages of Heinrich Kemner, the

founder of the Conference Center in Krelingen. In our studios in Dbendorf (near Zurich) we continue to produce new radio programs for the Arab world. We are very pleased to announce that we will

soon broadcast the program Through the Bible where the Bible will be read in Arabic, with matching background music. Please pray with us that many searching, Arabic speaking people will come across the programs of RNH and hear the proclamation of the gospel. Another new program Dare to Ask (in English) is an addition to the programs that are broadcasted via Hotbird. This program is targeted at people who are discussing the Christian faith with Muslims. However, the series will also provide answers for Muslims who are asking questions about Jesus Christ. How Europe Can Shape the Global World

The end of the unipolar moment, underlined by the American fiasco in Iraq and by the ascendancy of China, Brazil and India, raises again questions about the structure of the global system and how Europe fits within it.
After the end of the cold war and with the accelerating pace of globalisation, Europeans were inclined to believe that greater economic interdependence would emasculate the power of nation states. The international system instead entered a peculiar period in which rising countries coexist, and there has been a return to a power politics framed by the US, China, India, Brazil and Russia. This baroque situation constitutes a challenge for Europe, which is better suited to dealing with intensified interdependence than with power politics. In such a context, what are the possibilities for Europe to influence the global system? The first scenario could be called power in progress. A growing power becomes aware of its common interests and develops policies that go beyond the traditional realm of economics, such as exists in the US. This is the most improbable scenario for Europe. There is no demand for more political integration, a fact crudely revealed by the failure of the constitutional treaty. As long as there is no European polity, the development of a federalist Europe is unthinkable. This fact may dismay a lot of us, but is an inescapable reality. So if there is no chance of having a super-federal state, what kind of expectations can we have for Europe? The only credible scenario for Europe lies in its normative power promoting standards that are negotiated and legitimised within international institutions. Norms aim to discipline the behaviour of state and non-state actors. To be efficient, those norms should rely on soft and hard mechanisms of enforcement. Of course, those norms could be biased in favour of the dominant powers, as some developing countries argue. There is a risk, for example, that stringent environmental rules in Europe will hurt the development of some exporting countries that have lower standards. That is why norms need legitimacy and mechanisms of compliance that allow weaker countries to have a say. The World Trade Organisation's dispute settlement system is one example of a relatively unbiased enforcement process. What are the domains in which normative Europe can make a difference and promote values reflecting its own social preferences? Climate change is probably the most important global issue and is the area in which Europe has acquired undisputed leadership. Multilateral trade negotiation is a second domain in which normative Europe needs be committed. The multilateral framework is the most equitable system, even if there are frustrations in the slow pace and temptations to go bilateral, as the US is doing. Human rights are the potential third pillar. Here the results could be mixed because this issue is in the hands of nation states torn between colonial guilt, economic greed and ethical concerns. Europe has both to respect national sensitivities and to keep its options open, including talking to all political stakeholders, such as Hamas. It also has to develop the power to name and shame rogue regimes by enhancing the role of the European Parliament: what states cannot do, the Parliament can.
-Financial Times, 1 May 2008, pg. 13

The article is on target. Europe is the manifestation of the final global kingdom identified in the image described in Daniel chapter 2. It is also important to realize that only Europe has conquered

the entire world. No other continent was able to subdue all of the world's five continents and install their law, language, culture, and business practices. Furthermore, we must keep in mind that the nations of the world, as we know them today, are the result of European political policies. The borders of virtually all of these countries were drawn by European colonial powers. Now, with the newly defined Europe, expressed in their motto, United in diversity, nothing seems impossible. As the article states, Europe is capable of dialoging even with such extreme fanatical groups as Hamas. Thus we see Bible prophecy in the process of fulfillment through the unifying of the nations of the world under the fourth and final kingdom as documented in Daniel 7:23: Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

Preventable Death Ranking:France First;US Last

France, Japan and Australia rated best and the United States worst in new rankings focusing on preventable deaths due to treatable conditions in 19 leading industrialized nations, researchers said.
If the U.S. health care system performed as well as those of those top three countries, there would be 101,000 fewer deaths in the United States per year, according to researchers writing in the journal Health Affairs. Researchers Ellen Nolte and Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine tracked deaths that they deemed could have been prevented by access to timely and effective health care, and ranked nations on how they did. In establishing their rankings, the researchers considered deaths before age 75 from numerous causes, including heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, certain bacterial infections and complications of common surgical procedures. Such deaths accounted for 23 percent of overall deaths in men and 32 percent of deaths in women, the researchers said. France did bestwith 64.8 deaths deemed preventable by timely and effective health care per 100,000 people, in the study period of 2002 and 2003. Japan had 71.2 and Australia had 71.3 such deaths per 100,000 people. The United States had 109.7 such deaths per 100,000 people, the researchers said. After the top three, Spain was fourth best, followed in order by Italy, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Greece, Austria, Germany, Finland, New Zealand, Denmark, Britain, Ireland and Portugal, with the United States last. The research was backed by the Commonwealth Fund, a private New York-based health policy foundation. It is startling to see the U.S. falling even farther behind on this crucial indicator of health system performance, Commonwealth Fund Senior Vice President Cathy Schoen said. The fact that other countries are reducing these preventable deaths more rapidly, yet spending far less, indicates that policy, goals and efforts to improve health systems make a difference, Schoen added in a statement.

We rarely read such reports in our media, which is primarily due to the fact that it is negative from national perspectives. But information of such kind is now easily obtainable through the internet. It stands to reason that such ratings will encourage competition among the nations. There are many nations who are eager to send their rich and famous patients to the best clinics with the best ratings. Healthcare doubtless is an important part of the forming of a united world.

Confidence Hits 28-year Low

US consumer confidence sank to its lowest level in 28 years as anxious shoppers grappled with surging food and fuel costs, according to a survey. The Reuters/University of Michigan consumer confidence index plunged from 62.6 to 59.5 in May, the lowest reading since June 1980. Meanwhile, oneyear inflation expectations rose to 5.2 percent, the most since February 1982, and up from 4.8 percent last month. A separate report revealed new construction of single-family homes dropped to the lowest level in 17 years.

Safety Zone
The eurozone:engine of the world economy. It may sound strange but it has more than a grain of truth. First-quarter gross domestic product grew 2.2 percent year on year compared with forecasts of 1.7 percent. In spite of some spectacular bank blow-ups and still tight money markets, the impact of the credit crunch on the eurozone economy has been limited so far. Lending terms have tightened but, says the European Central Bank, there is little evidencethat financial market turbulence has had a strong impact on credit provision.Unlike the US and UK,there has not been a decline in house prices across the continent as a whole.Europe's heterogeneity has helped.

Sixty-One Percent of US Corporations Pay No Taxes

A 2004 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) study found that 61% of American corporations, including 39% of large companies, paid no corporate income taxes between 1996 and 2000.
Last year, corporations shouldered just 14.4% of the total U.S. tax burden, compared with about 50% in 1940. While companies are getting off easy, thanks to loopholes, ordinary wage earners are getting stuck with the tab. The tax burden on individuals is expected to climb from $1.16 trillion in 2007 to $1.21 trillion this year, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), while corporate tax receipts are expected to decline from $370 billion to $364 billion. By 2013, the CBO estimates, ordinary taxpayers' bills may climb to $1.86 trillion while corporate tax bills drop to $327 billion. One strategy of corporations is to create shell companies in places like Bermuda, Gibraltar and the Caribbean to avoid federal taxes. Corporations set up an offshore division that has nothing more than a post office box, says Rep. Richard E. Neal (D., Mass.), the chairman of a House subcommittee probing tax breaks. In one recent case, KBRa former Halliburton subsidiary and the largest Iraq war contractoradmitted to reducing tax obligations through two Cayman Islands divisions, reportedly avoiding hundreds of millions of dollars in Medicare and Social Security taxes. A 2004 study by the GAO found that 24 of the largest federal contractors used Cayman Islands units to shave their tax bills. In their defense, businesses say that U.S. corporate tax rates are the second highest in the developed world, making our country less competitive. But a study from the nonprofit group Citizens for Tax Justice found that, because of loopholes, the corporate tax burden in the U.S. is actually the world's third lowest when measured as a percentage of gross domestic product.
-Parade, 13 April, 2008, pg. 24

Not only the United States, but also many other prosperous nations are faced with the same problem of not being able to collect taxes due. Based on available information, the process of eliminating tax shelters has been in the works for decades and will eventually be enforced by international laws. That process is just another step towards the internationalization of planet Earth.

Crew to Be Sent in Space in 7 Years

At a luncheon meeting hosted by a Washington DC think-tank on K-Street, better known as a hangout for lobbyists than space buffs, the tables were all named after Indian space pioneers Dhawan, Chandrasekhar, Sarabhai. It was an audacious display by a country that till recently was banished from the US space business by a rigid sanctions regime that didn't allow the transfer of a screw, let alone its drivers. But this week, a topflight delegation led by a person who a US interlocutor described

On matters of space flights and exploration, India has put its cards on the table for the United States to seeliterally.
rather than competitionin this field will be the future. In fact, so clued in are US space buffs on India's giant steps in space exploration (that began as baby steps with US help) that Nair was examined closely on ISRO's progress on developing a two-stage, two-orbit cryogenic engine that will engender a reusable space launcher. A technology demonstrator will be ready by 2012 and such a system will be operational by 2020-2025, Nair said boldly.
-The Times of India, 1 February 2008, pg. 13

as India's Mr. Space motored into town for talks on India's mission to the moon and beyond, including Washington's involvement in the Chandrayan series of flights. India will be able to send manned space flights in seven to eight years, India's space chief Madhavan Nair said. We have sensitised the government on manned space flights. In seven to eight years, we will be able to carry crew to orbit and back, Nair added. He said India believes space is the next frontier and international cooperation

India's technological progress is nothing short of amazing. Although there is nothing to be gained in this space race, the prestige is one trophy highly valued by all nations; in this case, India. The country now has the intellectual capacity to be transformed from a backward, undeveloped nation to a member of the club of nations reaching for space. The real reason for space exploration is nothing less and nothing more than a hidden rebellious spirit against the God of Creation, who has given the earth to man to subdue it, but not space.

Hugo Chavez Likens German Chancellors Party to Hitler

Continue the Fight Against Israel

Osama bin Laden vowed in an audio tape to mark Israel's 60th anniversary to continue to fight the Jewish state and its western allies.
The al-Qaeda leader said the IsraeliPalestinian conflict was at the heart of the Muslim battle with the west and an inspiration to the 19 bombers who attacked the US in 2001. We will continue, God permitting, the fight against the Israelis and their allies, and will not give up a single inch of Palestine as long as there is one true Muslim on Earth, he said on an Islamist website.
-Financial Times, 18 May 2008, pg. 2

Venezuelas populist president Hugo Chavez has suggested that the political party of German chancellor Angela Merkel shared the ideals of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. Chavez accused Merkel of urging Latin American leaders to avoid ties with his government. He said Merkel was a member of the Christian Democratic Union, the same right wing that supported Hitler and fascism. Chavez was on the verge of launching more insults, but suddenly stopped short. Mrs. Chancellor, you can go to After pausing for a moment, he added: Because you are a lady, I wont say more. Reacting to the diatribe, a German government spokesman quoted Merkel as saying: President Chavez does not speak for Latin America. European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso called the German chancellor a great democrat, andin a clear reference to Chavezsaid that inflammatory, populist and aggressive remarks go against efforts to increase cooperation between Europe and Latin America.

The powerlessness of Osama Bin Laden and all other terrorist groups is ev-

idenced by their repeated threats. Various terrorist groups and their supporters have tried desperately to wreck havoc among the nations, particularly Israel, but continue to fail. One can imagine how desperate these people are who wish to destroy, kill, and maim, but their powerlessness is exposed in their exalted declaration of words such as We will continue, God permitting, the fight against the Israelis and their allies. Surely, if they could, they would, but here again, the old proverb is true, dogs that bark loudest don't bite.

Shopping by Cell Phone

You can soon make your payments through your mobile phone rather than using a credit card or debit card. The Reserve Bank of India, in its annual policy statement, said it was formulating the guidelines fro a payment system using mobile phones. RBI is in discussions with banks, service providers and industry bodies to develop the payment system. The bank said the draft guidelines would be placed on its website. The reach of mobile phones in India has been increasing rapidly. There are about 250 million mobile phone connections in the country. This is much larger than the number of credit card holders at around 10 million. Therefore, use of the mobile for payments is being considered for quite some time. The rapid expansion of this mode of communication has thrown up a new

delivery channel for banks, RBI said in the policy statement. A senior banker, who has studied the system, said a person can access his bank account through his mobile phone. He can also transfer money from his account to another person's account. He said that later, the mobile phone could also be used as a charge card. In this you can load a certain amount of money in your chip and make payments.

In spite of the extremely undiplomatic language employed by Venezuelas President Hugo Chavez, he has one thing in his favor: the price of oil serves to his advantage. In the end, however, each and every national leader will have to succumb to the dictates of the spirit of the end times. There will be, according to prophetic Scripture, unity, and that at any cost.

This reinforces the fact that it cannot be too far off when physical money (paper, coins) will become a rarity and electronic money be the currency of the day. But, it's not the end, it's only the beginning towards the goal of total control: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name (Revelation 13:17).

Muslim Scholar Teaches Gita,Koran,and Bible

Every Thursday the Kothanda Rama Swamy temple is fully packed by devotees who are eager to listen to the discourse on Kamba Ramayana.
This discourse is not delivered by a Hindu teacher but by a Muslim scholar named M. Abdul Salaam, whose secular lectures are popular in the local mosques and churches as well. Four years ago, Salaam, who was then a Tamil lecturer at a local college, was conferred the nickname Geeta Salaam, after he delivered an eloquent discourse on Bhagavad Gita. He surprised everyone with his knowledge about the holy book. Later one day, Salaam even replaced a Hindu scholar, who cancelled his lecture on Gita at the last minute. And since then he became the most sought after speaker of religious discourses at the local religious institutions. Salaam said he sees no contradiction in giving discourses on Ramayana, Gita and the Holy Bible, besides the Koran. If I can understand the Koran, I can understand Gita and the Bible, however, complex the philosophy is, Salaam added. When we can read all sundry material then why can't we rather read scriptures of other religions and try to understand it? After all, different religions show the same path for enlightenment, Salaam asked. He is also popular among Muslims for his Milad Nabi lectures. Foreigners from outside the European Economic Areathe 27-nation European Union plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtensteindeemed at most risk of committing immigration offenses will be targeted first, Smith said, including those using student or marriage visas to live in Britain. The identity cards will store details of the holders' immigration status, entitlements and specifics on how long they can stay in the country, she said. Beginning in 2009, citizens of the European Economic Area who live in the U.K. and Britons working in secure sites, including some airport staff, power station workers and staff at the London 2012 Olympics, will be required to sign up for identity cards. Students and young people will be asked to join the program starting in 2010. The preachings of Islam and Christianity are almost same. Siddha Prushas' (great persons) were there among Hindus, Muslims and Christians. They did not divide people on religious or caste lines, Salaam added. It was certainly not a rosy path to fame for Salaam, who initially had to endure hostility from an orthodox section of the community. When one talks of Rama or Allah or Christhe or she talks about God and forgets religion, Salaam said. My next ambition is to give lectures on Mahabharata. Inshaallah, I will do it Salaam concluded.
Times of India, 28 April 2008, pg.

Religious unity is clearly predicted in Scripture and will come to pass. This Muslim scholar who teaches Hinduism, Islam and Christianity is an exception at this point of time. However, there is little doubt that religious philosophy will continue to prosper until the whole world unites into a unified religion, although each one may retain their original identity. Revelation 13 clearly states: all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him (the Antichrist). That requires unity of all religions. ber combined with the driver's license, without which you cannot open a bank account, get utilities connected, and in some cases, can't buy a motor vehicle. But, we ask, what is the real reason for identity cards? Is it really the fear of terrorism, foreigners or some unexplained threat? We do not think so. The progress toward issuing ID cards, in whatever shape or form, is only part of the global registration of all people, which ultimately will be finalized in the fulfillment of Revelation 13:16-17: And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Britain to Issue National ID Cards

Britain will begin issuing national identity cards within months, targeting foreigners, airport staff and students in the first wave of the program, the government said. Foreign nationals will need to provide fingerprints and personal data for a database linked to the plan starting in November, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said. Ministers say the cards and database will help tackle terrorism, crime and illegal immigration. Opponents insist the system will be too expensive, provide little added security and erode personal freedoms.

Smith said that from 2011 on, everyone in Britain applying to renew a passport will have his or her details added to the national database. She said she expected most people to be registered by 2017. The government has promised Parliament a vote before making it compulsory to carry an ID card. The debate is expected in the next parliamentary session, with a vote likely in 2010. As citizens, it will offer us a new, convenient, secure way to prove our identity, Smith said.

Survey Says Americans Value Free Time Over Money

Having enough free time is more important to most Americans than being rich, according to a new poll.
Only 13 percent of more than 2,400 people questioned in the telephone poll ranked being wealthy as most important to them, while 67 percent ranked free time as their top priority, higher than having a successful career, getting married, and having children. Everyone wants free time to do the things they want to do, young, middle-aged or old, said Richard Morin, of the Pew Social & Demographic Trends Project, which conducted the survey. So our desire to play unites us. The poll also showed that people who were university educated valued career success over wealth, as did middle-aged people. Not surprisingly, those who didnt have money, ranked wealth very highly. This included minorities, first generation Americans and less educated people. The survey also revealed that a disproportionate number of people under the age of 30 and retirees in the group made $20,000 or less a year. But the emphasis on wealth lessens with age, with younger people putting value on it but hardly any seniors. It just diminishes with time as the reality sets in that you would never be rich, Morin said. But also, the reality sets in that you dont have to be rich to lead a very comfortable and fulfilling life. While wealth was not at the top of peoples list of priorities, 43 percent still said it was somewhat important. (Reporting by Irene Kuan; Editing by Patricia Reaney)

The American work force has already attained the title of least free. In spite of Americans working more diligently, with longer hours and little to no workers rights, the U.S. continues to face the problem of being unable to produce products the world wants to buy. The chance to gain more freedom at this point of time is virtually out of the question for the bulk of average workers. Will it change

in the future? Not many experts seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel, considering the immense debt load of the nation. So the question is, where will it lead to? The answer is relatively simple: America will be forced to be more willing to actively participate in building a global world. The more America becomes dependent on foreign countries, particularly communist China, the more the U.S. will be forced to adapt to international law, rules, and regulations. We repeat, in the end, all will have to become one its only a matter of time.

Pope Benedict Thanks God For Israels Independence

Pope Benedict XVI has described the 60th anniversary of Israels independence as a sign of Gods beneficence toward the Jews.
I thank God for allowing the Jews to realize their quest for a homeland. Benedict was quoted as saying by Israel Radio. The remarks were made as Benedict received Motti Levy, Israels new ambassador to the Vatican. In an interview with Israel Radio, Levy described meeting the pontiff as very moving. He said that Benedict had endorsed Israels right to self-defense but also appealed for an end to Palestinian suffering. The Pope further voiced concern about the dwindling number of Christians in the Holy Land. According to a report by the Catholic News Service, the Pope said that the anniversary celebration could foreshadow even greater re-

joicing when a just peace finally resolves the conflict with the Palestinians. Speaking of mutual interests between Israel and the Vatican which represented more than a simple convergence of political goals, Benedict said: The holy cities of Rome and Jerusalem represent a source of faith and wisdom of central importance for Western civilization, and in consequence, the links between Israel and the Holy See have deeper resonances than those which arise formally from the juridical dimension of our relations.
-worldjewishcongress.org, 13 May 2008

The statement, The holy cities of Rome and Jerusalem

stand in contrast to Holy Scripture. There is only one holy city and that is Jerusalem (Isaiah 52:1). We read in Psalms 125:1-2: They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. Interestingly, no one in the world agrees with Holy Scripture when it comes to Jerusalem, and thereby the nations of the world pronounce condemnation upon themselves, particularly those under the leadership of the Vatican.

Satan Restrained?... Trinity... Why Israel?...

Satan Restrained? Editor, The Dr. Tom Ice article on page 20 in the March 2008 issue reminded me of a conversation with a priest. He said, Did you know we are already in the millennial reign? Did you know Satan is restrained? When I disagreed the priest revised a previous statement and declared Satan was actually only partially restrained. The actual 1,000 years began when in the year 538 the Caesar in the East at Constantinople declared the western bishop at Rome to be Lord of the Church and ended with Lutheran teachings wildly circulating by 1538. Therefore there cannot be another millennial reign or Rome will have been

guilty of false teaching, something only Lutherans are able to do today.

-John W. Ryan, Belvidere, IL

Answer: Thank you very much for the interesting information about the 1,000 years and Luther. One item caught my special attention, Satan restrained? That in actual fact is true. Just think what would happen if God would grant Satan free hand on earth. We would then literally have hell on earth. That is yet to come, according to Revelation 12:12. The Bible says: The whole world lies in wickedness, There is none righteous, no, not one,all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, plus He who sins is of the devil; therefore, the devil legally owns this

We are told by many preachers that Israel is Gods chosen people and as such deserves to reign over us, because we are Gentiles. world.Yet that did not invalidate Gods love and grace. God indeed has put a restraining order on Satan so the world can continue to function in a somewhat civilized manner. But it is only due to the grace of God, who wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of Christ. When God does establish His 1,000 year Kingdom of Peace, He will first of all abolish all military weapons and infrastructure. That will happen after the time of grace has expired, and will be followed by the seven years of Great Tribulation. The climax will be the visible and literal return of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Mount of Olives in Israel.

swer to your six questions? No. Why not? Because this is an issue of faith. The Bible says, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1).

Trinity Dear Brother Froese, I have enjoyed Midnight Call and News From Israel for many years. I would appreciate your thoughts on: 1. Jesus Christs presence during the Creation period. 2. His deity, His glorified body and His part in the Creation. 3. I have the same questions about the Holy Ghost.

Answer: Somewhere I read that Augustine pondered the thought of the Trinity while he was walking on a beach. There he noticed a small boy taking a bucket, scooping water from the ocean and pouring it in a hole he had dug. When the boy was asked what he was doing, he answered, I am emptying the ocean. That was sufficient for Augustine to realize that there is no human intellectual answer to the question about the Trinity. The same goes for the Lords deity, His glorified body, the Holy Ghost, or God speaking, Let us make man in our image. Actually, I see it as a dangerous path when you attempt to comprehend spiritual matters which are intellectually incomprehensible. Did you get an an-

Why Israel? Dear Arno Froese, I am a very confused man; perhaps you can put me in the correct position where I could understand just where we are in life at this time and who is in charge. I understand from what I have heard that God the Father and God the Son created all that was ever seen and all that will ever be seen by man. He created from the soil of the earth, which is in itself a tiny microcosm of the universe, and placed the man and his wife in a small garden called Eden. These two were the only representation of man, and they talked with God. This planet was not to have been populated except that God made an imperfect thingman.

First question: Was this deliberate? God and Son created also the heavens with its inhabitants, including Satan, known as the Morning Star. He had magical instruments in him which helped make him a very self-righteous person. This finally got him kicked out of heaven. To carry the story fast forward, man had children and a nation was formed from Abraham. This nation Israel had the Son of God to come down and be born as man. This ended the need for flesh and fruit sacrifices to please God. His Son then died on the cross and was risen. Now the reason for the choice of the birth place was that the Israelites were, from all people of the globe, the only people who were chosen by God to be His people. The devil had all the rest. We are told by many preachers that Israel is Gods chosen people and as such deserves to reign over us, because we are Gentiles. I cant understand a God who is so long suffering that He will allow His Son to be still sitting in a boiling vat of animal dung for so long. Would you then explain to me why I should worship a God with this mentality?

knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. That is the Jesus the Bible describes clearly. Obviously, you have an issue with Israel. But you are not alone: the whole world agrees with you. Any leader who would dare agree that the country defined in Holy Scripture from the river of Egypt to the river of Euphrates is reserved for the Jews, would be called outright crazy. That fact, however, clearly reveals that Israel is different from all the peoples on the face of the earth. I suggest that you carefully read Romans 11, and note that this is specifically addressed to the Gentiles. You are right, Israel is a sinful nation, until this very day; and I must add, so is the rest of the world, but look at the provision God has created, the possibility for you and me and everyone who believes to escape the wrath which is to come. He will restore Israel in righteousness. That is what each of us who believes has experienced. Undeservingly, we have been made participants of His wonderful, unspeakable, amazing grace. Each one who believes has been transformed into a new creature in Christ. Do you think that God is limited and cannot do likewise with the entire nation of Israel?

Answer: We publish such material to clearly show how in actual fact the most brilliant minds of this world are really foolish when it comes to creation. Indeed, I am familiar with Dr. Henry Morris and many others who have written volumes about the fact that the world was indeed created precisely in accordance with Genesis 1.

Answer: You received your information from the wrong place, because the Son of God is sitting on the right hand of the Father in heavenly places. There is a day coming when Philippians 2:10-11 will be fulfilled: That at the name of Jesus every

Wise and Foolish Virgins Dear Arno Froese, With all the deception and false teaching going on these days in the so-called Church, my question concerns the parable of the 10 virgins, the five wise and the five foolish. Does this represent those in the Church who are going to be ready for the Rapture and those who are not going to be ready because they did not heed verse 13: Watch and be ready, for you know not the day nor the hour when the Son of man cometh?
-James Lynch, Indianapolis, IN

Answer: The story of the five wise and five foolish virgins is a parable. The moral of the story is to be ready at any moment. Notice that both the foolish and the wise slept; but five

were ready and five were not. This obviously is applicable for Israel but also for the Church. The warning in verse 13 is doubtless addressed to all who read it.

Rapture Dear Arno Froese, I have not been fortunate enough to have read your book, 119 Most Frequently Asked Question About Prophecy yet. However, in the Midnight Call magazine advertisement I received, which offered the book with a subscription, I noticed the first bullet showing the books content was What will happen after the Rapture occurs. It would seem that the first bullet should have been What happens just before and during the 31/2 years of tribulation (prior to the Rapture). Yes, prior to, for Jesus said He would not return until Immediately after the tribulation of those [end time] days (Matthew 24:29). He speaks of his four angels gathering his elect at that time (Matthew 24:31). I have friends who believe the opposite is true, and many pastors I have written to believe the opposite is true, even informing me of an interdenominational convention in which many pastors agreed that the Rapture comes first. These pastors cannot substantiate their beliefs with Scripture. It is my personal belief that they abhor the idea of confessing their errors for fear of losing face with their followers. For myself, I follow Christ, and Christ informed me that He would not come until Immedi46

ately after the tribulation of those days. He further reiterated this when he said: But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My Lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellow servants and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 24:48-51). I know that during the Tribulation, Christian saints will be hated, delivered up, afflicted, killed and offended (Matthew 24:9-10 and Matthew 10:16-42). I suspect Jews will be delivered up as well, unless they are among the majority of Jews who are hidden in the wilderness when they see the abomination of desolation stand in the holy place. Jesus said, In the world ye shall have tribulation. Those who look to escape actually are not ready to go, as their self stands in the way. When they can see that this body is immaterial (being flesh) but the Spirit continues, then they can be prepared for what will come on all menand that hour of temptation is not tribulation; it most likely means when 666 is employed.
-Linda Ragland, Eunice, NM

Answer: You actually made a good point in support of the imminency of the Rapture by quoting Matthew

24:48-51. These who are not imminently waiting for the Lord are scolded. That servant who was not waiting is cast away: The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth (verses 50-51). You are not waiting for the Lord because you are waiting for the Great Tribulation. The true servant is the one who is waiting always. That means the Lord could come today. Quite obviously, you have been mislead by applying Scripture to the Church instead of Israel. Indeed, He will come, Immediately after the tribulation but not for the Church because She is already gone. How do we know? Read carefully verse 31 where it plainly says that the Lord shall send his angels. How? With a great sound of a trumpet. For what purpose? They shall gather his elect from the four winds. Where to? To the land of the fig tree (Israel): Now learn a parable of the fig tree (verse 32). Compare this with the Rapture of the Church. The Lord is not going to send His angels,But the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with a voice of the archangel and with the trump of God. Also, this is not a trumpet but the trump of God. First Corinthians 15 identifies this trump of God as the last trump. This trump has no relationship to the trumpets of judgment in Revelation. This speaks of a unique event. The first trump of God was sounded when God presented His Word to His people Israel. The last trump of God calls the fruit created through His Word unto the Living Word which was made flesh. MC

How can I avoid unnecessary surgery?

B y D r. J o h n C i o n c i

Dr. John Cionci is a Philadelphia native and graduate of Central High School, University of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and Chair of the AIDS Association. Dr. Cionci has been a practicing physician since 1950.

his is an important question, but the answer is complex because there are so many variables. In the March issue of Midnight Call, I wrote about how to find a good family doctor. Having surgery is even more important, because no surgery is without risk. We are talking about complications, infections, mistakes, and even death. I graduated from medical school in June 1947 and spent the next few years training in different hospitals until I opened my first office in April 1950. One of the most important things I learned is that there are good doctors, and fairly good doctors, and there are good surgeons and bad surgeons. The difference is that the surgeon literally holds your life in his hands. Keep in mind that a surgeon makes his living by performing surgery. Make sure your primary care physician is not also board certified in surgery. The reason is that a specialist looks at a medical problem from the perspective in which he is most qualified. This is obviously only natural. But I believe that surgical intervention should be the last resort, except in cases of extreme emergencies. Charles Inlander, a nationally recognized authority on medical quality, and the president of the Peoples Medical Society, states that 10 to 20% of all surgery is unnecessary. But, he prefers to focus on particular operations. For example, he says that 90% of all hysterectomies (removal of a womans womb) are not necessary! He says that 80% of Caesarian sections (delivery of a baby by cutting open a womans abdomen and uterus), rather than delivery by natural childbirth, are not necessary. Also, 50% of prostate removals, and 33% of heart bypass surgeries are unnecessary! Mr. Inlander and other highly regarded medical authorities say that there are many other needless operations, such as those for removal of cataracts. For example, in 2002, the New York Times reported on an ophthalmologist alleged to have con-

ducted unnecessary cataract surgery on the mentally ill, who had not even complained about their vision. Other cases are not so scandalous. In some cases, a surgeon who has been practicing for many years is just behind the times, and is performing operations that no longer make sense, and are in fact obsolete. Mr. Inlander says it takes 10 or 15 years for an obsolete operation to finally be discarded completely. Do you see what Im getting at? One authoritative study by Dr. Lucia Leape of Harvard concludes, Most unnecessary surgery results from physician uncertainty about the effectiveness of an operation. Here is a scenario: You have pain in your abdomen or chest. You go to your primary care physician. He orders extensive blood tests. Then x-rays, next a CAT scan, and finally an MRI. None show anything definitive. So, he refers you to a topflight internal medicine specialist. He orders more tests. Still nothing, so he refers you to a surgeon for an exploratory operation. Here is where you must step in. Ask for a second opinion. If the second surgeon agrees with the first one, then you must take another step. Go online to a library and ask for a copy of Consumers Checkbook Guide to Hospitals, which rates over 4,500 hospitals. Choose the one that is most accessible for you. Find out which or if both of your surgeons practice surgery there, and who is the most qualified. If neither does, then ask that particular hospital for a list of their top surgeons. Now, ask for a third opinion, even if you have to pay for it yourself. If the third surgeon agrees, then make him or her your choice. This is the soundest advice I can give you. Remember, surgery is not a science: it is an art. Its your body and your life. So you deserve the best. The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them (Proverbs 11:3). MC

While people can only speculate about the details of what it will be and how it will be implemented, there is no disputing at least one fact: The execution of the mark described in Revelation 13 will be an unprecedented landmark event in human history. Did you know that the world is being prepared now for its implementation? In every aspect of life on this earthfrom economy and government to religionthere are strong indications that we are closer than ever to the time when a worldwide identification system is a likelihood rather than a wild impossibility.

Jesus Most Prophetic Sermon

Fascinating Numeric Patterns Revealed in the Holy Bible

Have you ever pondered the fascinating numeric precision woven throughout the Word of God? 666 pertains to Antichrist. What about 777 or 888? Why TEN Commandments and not 14 or 18? Why a 7-day week? Why not 8 or 9? Why were there 12 tribes of Israel and 12 apostles?

Chapters 24 & 25 of the book of Matthew have given birth to numerous doctrinal stances. Largely those doctrinal statements have revolved around eschatological issues. Many vital questions concerning the timing of endtime events are dissected and addressed in the examination of these prophetic chapters.

How much of Freemasonry has infiltrated our churches? Why are Masons allowed to retain their positions of leadership in our churches? Why is Freemasonry touted as a harmless fraternal organization when its roots are steeped in mysticism, magic and murder? These are just a few of the many questions author Keith Harris answers in The Masonic/Christian Conflict Explained. We must take this issue seriously if we intend to take back our churches from unbelievers.

Arm yourself against this false teaching!

This book contains biblical information that will help the reader distinguish the difference between Christianity and Gnosticism. Because of the recent attack on the Body of Christ (Church) it is imperative that Christians understand the development of the early church and the origin of the many Bible manuscripts that have been used to produce our English Bible.

Finally, a book that fully deals with the mysterious Spirit-inspired expressions written by the prophet Zechariah.
The book of Zechariah is the most messianic, apocalyptic and eschatological book of the Old Testament. Zechariah is also the most Christ-centered of all the prophets. He speaks more about Christ, His work and His glory than all the other minor prophets combined. Norbert Lieth explains how Zechariah documents Jesus First and Second Coming, including His future rule, priesthood, kingship, humanity and divinity. ZECHARIAHS PROPHETIC VISION FOR THE NEW WORLD

News headlines from the wartorn Middle East are constantly changing, and though those countries are on the opposite side of the globe, the events unfolding there have a powerful effect on America. But the complexity of all thats happening makes it difficult to understand what it means and how it affects us. Authors John Ankerberg and Dillon Burroughs help bring clarity to the issues as they answer these important questions: Why does peace continue to elude the Arab nations and Israel? What part does Middle East oil have in all this? Where do Iran, Lebanon, and Hezbollah fit into the big picture? What can we expect from todays new breed of terrorists? What does the United States have at stake? Readers who have perceived the Middle East conflict as too complicated to understand will gain a new appreciation for how todays events fits into Gods plan for the future.
