dred, and from thy fathers house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3). The election is based on God, His sovereign I will. These tremendous promises were made almost 4,000 years ago, but are still valid today. They are the eternal I will against the I will of the adversary, Satan, whose will stands diametrically opposed to Gods. In Isaiah 14:13-14 we read the expressed I will of the originator of sin: For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. This great contradiction between the I will of God and the I will of Satan is manifested throughout the world today. Now verse 2: Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time
he book of Haggai consists of only two chapters and 38 verses. We may call him a prophet of few words. He proclaims judgment and salvation, destruction and restoration. The people of Judah are the main target of his prophecies. Let us read the introduction: In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest (verse 1). Here we need to take note that a Gentile is mentioned, King Darius. No longer are the kings of Judah or Israel listed. This is the times of the Gentiles. The year is 520 B.C. The Word of the Lord comes to Haggai, addressed to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, and Joshua the high priest. Note: first politics, then religion. Judah was no longer independent but was subject to the Gentile power under King Darius. That is not how it was in the beginning. When we read of the calling of Abraham, it says, Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kin4

is not come, the time that the LORDS house should be built. Note particularly the five words, the time is not come. Speak to church people, even those who claim to believe in the Bible, and mention that the Rapture is at hand, that signs are being fulfilled and that we are living in the end stages of the end times, and you will most likely receive the answer, no one can really tell. Why do people make such statements? Quite simply, they are not waiting for the coming of the Lord. They are waiting for something else to occur first; they are expecting a tangible sign in order to believe that we are living in the last days. Of course, this is nothing new. Back in the apostles time, there were believers who disregarded the prophetic Word. It was the Apostle Peter who wrote these words, inspired by the Holy Spirit: This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour (2 Peter 3:1-2). We are to be mindful and we are to remember the words spoken by the holy prophets. Then he describes the opposition to the prophetic Word: Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation (2 Peter 3:4). The voices of those who speak that language are increasing in these days. What was the reason for Israel to say, The time is not come, the time that the Lords house should be built? That question is answered in detail in the book of Ezra. We know from the report that King Cyrus of Persia gave order that the Jews could return to Jerusalem to build the temple: Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem (Ezra 1:3). Not only did he encourage the Jews to build the house of the Lord God of Israel, but he also made provision to finance it: And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem (Ezra 1:4). Money was not an issue. But the result was nevertheless, The time is not come! The Jews took their long journey to Jerusalem. When they arrived, they first built an altar to offer burnt offerings; they thanked God. Next, the foundation of the house of God was laid. Apparently, everything went well. But then came the adversaries, Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel (Ezra 4:1). In the time frame of the adversaries, the target had shifted from building the house of God to building the city. That was the greatest mistake the Jews made. From that point on, the enemies of Israel had a legitimate reason to complain to the king of Persia, and that is exactly what they did. They sent a letter to the king defining the work that was going on in Jerusalem: Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from

thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations. Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings (Ezra 4:12-13). Interestingly, these enemies do not mention anything about the building of the Temple, but the building of the city. That means the Jews were building their own houses instead of the Temple. Of course, they had enough reason to do so; after all, you must take care of your family, and building the city wall was necessary for security. But what was the result? Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia (Ezra 4:24). That is precisely the time, the second year of Darius the king, when the prophet Haggai brought the message of God to Israel: Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? (verses 3-4). We must keep in mind that Israel was still Gods chosen people. As such, they returned from the 70 years of captivity to the city of Jerusalem, which was laid waste. On the surface, everything looked proper. But they were rebuilding the city without first giving priority to rebuilding the Temple. God, through His prophet explains why they are in such a predicament: Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes (verses 5-6). They received a lot of foreign aid from Persia (todays Iran), but that did not satisfy the real need of the people because they had reversed their priorities: Gods blessing was missing. They placed security and prosperity first, then in second place, the building of the Temple. Jesus our Lord made this profound statement to the people of Israel in Matthew 6:33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. God challenges His people: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD (Haggai 1:7-8). He is simply telling them, first things first, build the house. Not your house, not your security, not your well-being; the house of God in Jerusalem was Israels first order of business, but they neglected it: Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house (verse 9). Here again we have a prophetic message for the Church. What is the task of the Church of Jesus Christ on earth? To be witnesses unto Him, thus glorifying God. Ephesians 1:5-6 reads: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

The majority of Christianity has changed this calling to an earthly one. Although noble and well meaning, there are literally millions of Christians who have taken on a task the Lord has not given them. What are they doing that they should not? They are trying to change the world or change our country. This world is not to be changed by the testimony of the Church, but the Church should be changed into a Body that glorifies that Jesus our Lord: Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men (2 Corinthians 3:2). There are a great many speeches, sermons, books and articles that speak about the changing of the world through the Gospel, but in reality it is just wishful thinking. We are not called to change the world. We are not able to change anythingnot our nation, our town, and, as many of us have experienced, not even our own family. Our task does not consist of changing or influencing this world, but our task is to build the house of God. Havent you read what 1 Peter 2:5 says? Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:20-22 adds: And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. This leads us to an important question: Am I building the holy Temple of the Lord, or am I building self, that is, the things of this world? Haggai continues to pass on the words of the Lord: Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house (verse 9). Here the physical blessing, the very existence of life, is at stake: Because of mine house that is waste. The Jews in Jerusalem used the foreign aid package they received from the King of Persia for their own selves. How many dear Christians today have forgotten who they are? Dont you know that we have no future here, that we are just passing through, preparing for eternity? That the desires for yourself, your family, and your country have no direct relationship to the spiritual habitation which is now in the process of being completed? Therefore, escape from the things of the world and turn decidedly toward the fulfillment of your calling to be a lively stone in the building of the habitation of God and the Spirit! For Israel, these things were very physical. They are Gods earthly people with specific earthly promises. To harvest an abundance, to fill storehouses and barns with the produce of the land was a sign of Gods blessing. But here we see that Gods hands were tied, so-to-speak, to bless His people because they had placed their priority in the wrong direction. Thus, the pronouncement of judgment: Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands. (verses 10-11). This is a death sentence. When God withholds the rain, its the end of physical existence for vegetation, even upon men and upon cattle.
The book of Zechariah is the most messianic, apocalyptic and eschatological book of the Old Testament.

Even today, with all our sophistication, our inventions and our technology, we could not exist if God would withhold rain from the earth. But God in His grace, mercy and long-suffering always made a provision for His people to return unto Him. Scripture records that the great and glorious King Solomon, who walked with the Lord, was the richest and wisest king there ever was. He prayed to God at the dedication of the Temple, and one verse stands out: If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14). This promise is specifically for the people of Israel because they are my people. Their land is chosen from all the lands of the world, and there in the midst is the city of Jerusalem. God chose to place his name there forever, and these people have this very special physical, geographically identifiable land which the Lord also calls My land. Will God heal the land of Israel? The answer is an unqualified yes. Israel will humble themselves, they will seek the face of God, and they will repent; and God will hear from Heaven, He will forgive their sins, and He will heal their land. The preparation for the fulfillment of that prophecy is now in progress. Many may now ask, Can we not appropriate this promise for ourselves? The answer is an unqualified yes. However, we must add that this is applicable from spiritual perspectives only. We read in 1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. When you do confess with all of your heart, then you are placing yourself at the disposition of the Lord to be used as a lively stone acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

In the above study of the book of Haggai, we have seen the importance of Gods prophetic Word. Let us not be of those who say, The time is not come, but rather heed the words of Revelation 1:3: Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. Note in particular the last six words. During the 2 days of the conference, we will hear Bible scholars expound the theme, The Accelerating Fulfillment of Bible Prophecy. Right now, and for the first time in human history, we are witnessing the coming together of the nations in preparation for a one-world global society. No one can deny that politically this is already the case, and so it is economically as well as financially. There is only one item lacking, and that is religious unity. JESUS IS GREATER
ou are probably familiar with the Allahu Akbar that is heard many times a day from the minarets in Muslim countries. It is usually translated, Allah is great. In actual fact, however, Allahu Akbar means Allah is greater, and it is understood to mean this, above all by Muslims: Allah is greater. Allah is greater than Jehovah, Allah is greater than the God of the Bible, Allah is superior to all. There is nothing that can even come close to him. The Muslim creed is, I testify that there is no other God than Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is his prophet. For a Muslim this is indisputable. Yet I am very surprised that the same people who have such a problem with the claim of the Bible to absolutism, who call the testimony of Jesus in John 14:6, No man cometh unto the Father, but by me, intolerant, discriminating and fundamentalist, are so active in their support of the building of mosques and minarets. They even find it a cultural enrichment when the absolute claim of the Muslims is proclaimed daily, Allah is greater! Two claims to absolutism: Islamno problem! Biblenot open to discussion, discriminating. Do we not see therein the blindness of the western world, our politicians, our churches and our society? We do not want to discuss Islam, however, but with the help of the letter to the Hebrews, show who really is greater. The letter to the Hebrews was written in the first place to Jews who had come to believe in Jesus and acknowledged Him as their Messiah. Amongst these Jews, however, there were those who were very touched by the testimony of Jesus, but had not made a clear decision to follow Him. This letter shows us very impressively: Jesus is greater! He is greater than all that the Jews had known thus far.

The letter to the Hebrews makes a few comparisons to show that Jesus is greater than all. Jesus is greater, for instance, than the angels, Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten

thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him (Hebrews 1:46). At that time a false doctrine was circulating that put Jesus on a level with the angels, and that even gave the archangel Michael a higher position than the promised Messiah. And here the Word of God says to us, But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? (verse 13). Jesus is also greater than Moses, Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honor than the house (Hebrews 3:1-3). For the Jews, there was no greater or more exalted man on earth than Moses. And to these Jews it was said that Jesus is greater than Moses. In other words, nobody is greater than Jesus! This statement sounds almost like a provocation. If you say to an Orthodox Jew today, Jesus is greater than Moses, then see that you have good running shoes on! The writer of the letter to the Hebrews, however, who was inspired by God, was not worried about whether this statement would meet with approval. He had a burden to proclaim the truth. A liberal, historically-critical theologian who is open to discussion would surely have been careful not to tread on anyones toes. Jesus is greater than Moses? No, I cant write that! I would be excluding the Jews. Jesus is greater than Muhammad? No, I dont want to provoke Muslims. Jesus is greater than the angels? Well, yes, but not so absolutely. It is enough if I write, Jesus is greater than the angels, in consideration of the fact that we can see this differently. It is not about provocation but about not concealing the truth. And this means making it clear to Jews, Muslims and all men that Jesus is greater! This is the truth, and nobody will be able to forbid us to speak the truth, anti-discriminatory laws notwithstanding.

Jesus is greater, for Jesus is the only high priest who passed into the heavens without sin, for eternity.
Jesus is greater than Aaron, the greatest high priest of Israel, Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession (Hebrews 4:14). Aaron was not just any old priest, but the high priest of all high priests, called to office by God. Aaron was a man of God and, like Moses, glory also belongs to him. And yet he was flawed with weakness, just as Hebrews 7:28 says, For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Jesus is greater, for Jesus is the only high priest who passed into the heavens without sin, for eternity.
Neglecting grace
Through this list, Jesus is greater thanwhich is not even complete, it becomes apparent what the Jews would have to surrender if they were to return to the rituals and traditions of Judaism. And the letter to the Hebrews refers to this very problem in a few passages. The Jewish readers were confronted with the Gospel, which was witnessed and proclaimed by the apostles and the Jews who believed in Jesus. They saw signs and wonders, just as they saw the authority and power of the Holy Spirit, which was mighty in the apostles. They were given grace to see the work of redemption of Calvary and the whole greatness of Jesus Christ before their very eyes. They understood all this with their heads somehow, but unfortunately not with their hearts. They believed in a way, but unfortunately they did not put their faith into practice. They attended the meetings. And yet some of them turned back and therewith, the letter to the Hebrews says, they trod underfoot the Son of God. They rejected the grace that appeared in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:29). These Jews regarded Moses higher than Jesus. They regarded Aaron, the high priest of their fathers, higher than Jesus, the only true and perfect high priest. They departed from the truth and gave up what is perfect for what is not perfect. What a tragedy! They had tasted the truth, they had heard
of grace and faith, they were so near, and yet they turned back to the imperfect work of man. This behavior is like that of a rightly condemned man, who pleaded for pardon. When this pardon was granted, he suddenly appealed to the law, which had rightly condemned him. Therewith he deliberately rejected grace.
Nominal Christians
We also find such people in our churches today: people who have tasted grace and know full well what Jesus accomplished on Calvarys cross. They are Christians who believe and understand intellectually, who go to church and are present at all Christian events. But they have not put their theoretical knowledge into practice. They believe with their minds but not with their hearts. They are religious, devout even, and yet not born again. They are nominal Christians (in name only), whom the Word admonishes to heed what the Scriptures tell us. They are told not only to hear the Word, but also to take it to heart, to keep it, and above all to act in accordance with it (compare Hebrews 2:1). These nominal Christians usually go the way of least resistance and do not attract any attention. But as soon as the wind blows against them, the nature of their faith is revealed. This is how it was with the Hebrews at that time. They came to the point where they had to make a decision, Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul (Hebrews 10:38-39).

The Muezzin call, Allah is greater! can only be a lie, for the Koran itself does not offer assurance of salvation. Islam knows no perfect offering; a person has to strive himself: you have to do this and that and you are still not sure of your salvation!
Where is our faith when disease and adversity come upon us? Do we draw back discouraged, or do we proclaim, Jesus is still greater! How will our church fare when we do not have the freedom to gather any more, or are even threatened? Will we be an assembly of 10-20 people? What about me, when I am no longer allowed to preach the Word of God freely and without restriction? Do I still proclaim, For me to live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21)? Or do I prefer to preach on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Jesus is great, not only when things are going well for us, but especially in adversity (cf. Hebrews 3:14). through the heavens and now sits at the right hand of God to make intercession for us. My dear reader, Jesus is your personal advocate before the Heavenly Father, not only for a year, but also for all eternity (Hebrews 9:24-28). The law also brought no completion, as it says in Hebrews 7:19. Neither could the Old Testament sacrifices that were offered again and again make the Israelites perfect (Hebrews 10:1, cf. chapter 9), even if the law was good and Israel was told to keep it. The law was no human work but was given by God. Yet Jesus is greater! Jesus is the perfect priest, greater than the temple and greater than the Sabbath (Matthew 12:6 & 8). Jesus is the perfect sacrifice. No human sacrifice, no priesthood and no law can contribute to redemption. This fact applies to all people. Washing in the Ganges cannot redeem any Hindu. No meditation can get a Buddhist into heaven. No candle can help a Christian and no pilgrimage will lead a Muslim to Paradise. This is why Moses can never be the greatest, because he was not perfect, For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ (John 1:17). Jesus is greater! How can something that is not perfect be greater than something that is perfect? It is completely impossible. Only the work of redemption carried out by Jesus Christ on

Let us confront a few facts that the readers of the letter to the Hebrews had to. The Levitical priesthood, which was an important part of the old covenant, did not make anything perfect. You may think this is another provocation for the Jewish reader, but it is the truth. It is the Word of God, If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? (Hebrews 7:11). Through the Old Testament priesthood, the people of Israel were given the possibility of repentance and forgiveness, but on account of the continual new sins it never came to an end. Only in Jesus Christ is forgiveness final and complete, because in His sinlessness, He took our sins upon Himself, and blotted them out. Jesus not only entered into the Holy of Holies, but He passed

The letter to the Hebrews would say to the Jews today, Do not rely on your Rabbisthe sacrifices, the priesthood or the law, but grasp that which is better, namely the grace in Jesus Christ!
Calvary is perfect. He himself proclaimed on the cross, It is finished! When something is finished, it is perfect. This means that nothing needs to be added to it. Redemption is accomplished; it is promised us, but is only to be found on the cross of Calvary, and nowhere else. It makes no difference when people say, That is intolerant. That may be, but even if this is true, I can only say, And what if it is the truth? If I say, Toadstools are poisonous, many people may think that is intolerant, but it is the truth. And this is what is at stake. We should not tell people what they want to hear, but the truth. And if a person thinks out of false tolerance, he has to eat a plateful of toadstools, he can do it, but he will have to bear the consequences. look at him according to his nature any more, but in and through His Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). In and through Jesus we have now been made perfect and sanctified. Isnt that great? I want to ask you, what religion can offer you anything comparable to that? None! We find this only in the Word of God.
Grasp that which is better!

Jesus Christ, a greater or more perfect person the world has never seen. Greater than all that Judaism has ever known. Greater than Moses, Aaron, David and Solomon (Matthew 12:42) or Jonah (Matthew 12:41). The letter to the Hebrews said to the Jews, Do not rely on Moses or Aaron or any other priest, do not rely on David or any other king! Today it would say, Do not rely on your Rabbis, do not rely
Perfect through Jesus

Jesus is greater. Jesus is unique. And Jesus is the only way to be reconciled with God the Father. Jesus Christ is the incarnate Word of God. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. This Jesus is perfect in all eternity (Hebrews 13:8). He has entered into the greater and more perfect place, as it says in Hebrews 9:11-12. Through His own offering, through the fact that Jesus gave Himself, He made believers perfect forever, For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified (Hebrews 10:14). Just imagine that: the Bible, the Word of God, calls us perfect and sanctified! When we look in the mirror, we see the opposite. And yet we are perfect and sanctified in the eyes of God. This is not normal. How can it be true? Through the precious blood of Jesus Christ that He shed for you and me, we really are perfect and sanctified in the eyes of God. God does not see us as we are any more, but through His Son, Jesus Christ. The moment a person comes to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and lays his life in Jesus hands, God does not

on your statesmen and do not rely on your military power. Do not rely on the sacrifices, the priesthood or the law, but grasp that which is better, namely the grace in Jesus Christ! Let us call to all people, Do not rely on yourself, do not rely on your ability or your power, do not rely on people, on Mary or any patron saint, not on your pastor or bishop, not on your institution or organization. Do not rely on politics, finance or science. Do not rely on your guru or your religion. No, look rather to the cross, for Jesus is greater! Thou crownedst him with glory and honor, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: thou hast put all things in subjection under ... him, he left nothing that is not put under him (Hebrews 2:7-8). In Jesus we have a better hope (Hebrews 7:19). Through Jesus we are in possession of a better covenant and therewith better promises (Hebrews 7:22 & 8:6). We have a better sacrifice, a perfect offering, not the sacrifice of a beast but the sutstitutionary sacrificial Lamb, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us freely (Hebrews 9:23-28). We have a better possession (Hebrews 10:34). Finally, we have a better resurrection; not a return to a mortal body, as Hinduism teaches, but a resurrection with a spiritual and immortal glorious body (Philippians 3:20-21 and 1 John 3:2-3). Let us remember: Jesus is greater! And this very fact is what the Bible, the infallible and living Word of God, wants to reveal to us. This very fact is also what the writer of the letter to the Hebrewsinspired by Godrevealed to the Jews at that time in order to encourage and admonish them to hold fast to this Word. He is a fool who relinquishes what is better, greater and more perfect. Let us take to heart the words of Proverbs 3:5-7, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. We continue with the objective of this 3-part series: In these troubled times to find peace, contentedness and to store up for yourselves treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:20).
4. Crises Are More Tolerable When They Happen to Someone Else. We have just learned that economic and financial crises of the scope now being experienced in the United States, while rarer, nonetheless are within the normal range of human experience. Whats different, of course, is that a major crisis should strike America this time. In many ways, it has been deserved, as have most other such busts. However, for the sake of balanced perspective, we always like to point out the experience of Indonesia during the Asian crisis of 1997 to 1998. Why? Because this nation is the closest in population size to the US and it suffered a terrible economic depression only recently. North Americans today tend to believe that their current economic downturn is unjust, undeserved and especially bad; that there is some special significance because is happening to a country thought to be Christian; and, that the crisis is so significant it must be of apocalyptic scope. Actually, when compared to the Indonesian experience, North Americans protest too much. According to estimates by Goldman Sachs, the clean up of the US banking system may cost the equivalent of as much as 40% of GDP . In Indonesia, stabilizing its failed banks at that earlier time cost approximately 50% of GDP . Indonesias stock market fell more than 93% in USD terms and its economy contracted more than 20% over the 1997-98 period.

and concepts. But more generally, the use of economics for predictive purposes and policy must be seen as a secular religion. The truth is that the prescriptions of macroeconomics are no more effective than voodoo. It is a faculty of study assigned to the humanities. Therefore, because of the extent to which policymakers have put their faith into macroeconomics, false prophets and a fraudulent belief system have deceived us all. The late great global financial crisis (GFC) reveals this to be the case. Why? The vast majority of the prophets and high priests of modern macroeconomics did not predict the economic wreckage of the current crisis (practically none!). What has been witnessed is a systemic failure of the economics profession. A small number of scholars have emerged who are bravely exposing this empty tower of macroeconomics. In a recently issued paper, the authors pull no punches. They point out that: [] Systemic crisis appears like an otherworldly event that is absent from economic models. [] The economics profession has failed in communicating the limitations, weaknesses and even dangers of its preferred models to the public [] makes clear the need for the establishment of an ethical code. [] In hour of greatest need, societies around the world are left to grope in the dark without a theory. [] The tradition [of crisis phenomena] has been neglected and even suppressed.1 Apart from a few brave academics, the scientific fraud and failure of macroeconomics qualifies as the most unspoken fact in history (perhaps with the exception of psychiatry). Yet, at various gatherings of international economists recently, no one admits to this dismal record. Their obvious failure remains an open, unspoken secret. They continue on with their voodoo, further offering up policy pre-

Though 230 million people live in Indonesia, this scale of human suffering at the time (hunger and riots resulted), did not signal the beginning of the apocalypse, nor did it generate much concern here in North America. The troubles of other people are rarely considered so severe as when we experience them for ourselves. Sadly, the world is full of crises continually, including such heinous things as genocide (even now), famine and wars. By comparison, is it so remarkable that a typical financial crisis should not also fall upon developed countries such as Canada and the United States from time to time, especially so if they are deserved? To date, troubles have only been limited to financial and economic dimensions no famine, no pestilence. In any case, even were a country considered to be just and Christian, would that imply no trials would ever come upon their land? No. The Bible says, He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous (Matthew 5:45). 5. Beware of Economists Bearing Forecasts. To this point, we have made reference to many economic concepts, quoted economic data, and even suggested some macroeconomic predictions. We need to recant. In case you didnt know, the field of economics is not a science. Far from it. At best, it is a topic of study that may offer some practical tools

Now, their divinations all reveal a future so dire that massive money interventions by central banks are considered essential. (In other words, massive deceit and theft is necessary. We therefore observe that one evil begets another.) These emergency prescriptions will be no more effective in solving the oppressive economic problems of today than a bloodletting or an application of leeches is likely to heal a patient suffering from dementia. The whole field of directing government economic policies or predicting the future through macroeconomic theory is really no more valid than following pagan omens and false visions of prophets of old. Beware! It has yet to be proven that an economist is a more successful investor or forecaster than anyone else. Physician heal yourself (Luke 4:23). 6. Money: The Common Denominator of Truth? Quoting a recent article expressing concern from a high profile and respected Christian writer, Americans have lost some $3 trillion in wealth, as the markets have plummeted some 30%. Ignoring that this statistic is out of date, just what is the point? Apparently, there is gnashing of teeth; Christian business people (not to mention families and households) are gripped with great fear and they are looking for a special word from the Lord. Tough business conditions are surely not pleasurable, whether for business manager, owner or employee. All the same, some balance is needed in our perspective. Most Christians betray a very worldly and amoral view when it comes to matters of comfort and prosperity. Of course, all humans are predisposed to enjoy the same pleasures. So is this then a diatribe against pleasure? No. We only make the point that a pleasure cannot be consumed or enjoyed without at least some consideration of values and morals. That also applies to the pleasures of wealth and financial gains. Can you think of a situation where a huge financial gain may be immoral? No doubt, quite a number of such personal scenarios could be imagined. Lets next consider the same question on a more macro plain applying generally. For instance, if world real estate values are soaring, is that a good thing or a bad thing? While it may feel pleasurable at the time, we today (in the midst of a real estate crisis) can surely recognize that such a development may not have a pleasant consequence. In any case, just who has determined that financial upturns are no more allowed by the Lord than downturns? Why is it that Christians rarely ever seek the Lords direction when times appear to be indiscriminately blessed (seen from a worldly perspective)i.e. when inflated millions and trillions are on the plus side of the ledger, and societys arbitrary and imperfect indicators of well-being are all rising (i.e. stock markets and economic growth)? It reveals a duplicitous and false standard. Financial and economic indicators are not to be uncritically adopted by Christians as the measure of what is right and wrong. That the Dow Jones Industrial stock market index should rise is no sure indication of a good development or the validation of a benevolent situation. It may be the exact opposite perhaps an illusory wealth bubble that ensnares many people. That being the case, just where were these Christian commentators when these corrupt financial conditions began to occur in the first place? There were few warnings. More likely, that time of false prosperity, which was actually based upon illicit underlying developments, was wrongly taken as a validation of Gods overall blessings.

Fictitious Funny Money. One cannot discuss wealth until one can differentiate its modern popular conception from true earthly wealth. To the point of total blindness, the wealth that most everyone talks about in our age of Global Capital is mostly a mirage. The trillions that American households supposedly lost in recent times, just where did it come from in the first place? Was it legitimate, real wealth to begin with? Or was it just an illusory, manipulated contrivance? Seen in the aggregate, the answer is the latter. Indeed, some people did achieve enormous gains in relative wealth, but the vast majority did not. If anything, the worlds distribution of wealth is becoming ever more skewed. In America, this wealth skew is becoming as extreme as in some Latin American countries. Just what relation is there between financial market values and wealth? If you are shocked by such basic questions, please read our booklet, Real Wealth: Avoiding false images. Surely during the last few years, terribly corrupt and idolatrous conditions swept the US and most of the world. And, these conditions stand to get worse as grand monetary manipulations undermine any semblance of fair stewardship and ethics. That financial indicators themselves are deceptive is a very crucial realization that too few Christians have pondered. As troubling and deceitful as the times may be, we must yet still strive to make the best moral decisions that we can. However, it remains very difficult to extricate ourselves from the influences of pagan perspectives which are so deeply imbedded in our societies. Here is an important question that you must answer for yourself. Jesus, said, No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24, KJV). Then, is it really possible to wholly serve God, while employing the score-keeping values of Mammon? If you are called to be obedient to the Lord and it costs you in earthly

money (having already begun this activity in 2008). What is meant by the phrase printing money is that these central banks are now creating money out of thin air by fiat decree by the stroke of a pen. Such actions dilute the value of money that is already in existence, not to mention the savings of hard-working people. It is grand theft deception wizardry of a type and scale qualifying it as an endtime development. In practical terms, the purchasing power of your savings and current income will not stretch as far in the future. In recent decades, there has been another rather nefarious development in respect to financial market wealth. Consider that policymakers have long ago recognized that the surest way to make people feel happy and prosperous is to have the perceived wealth of their homes and other assets rise. (Even most Christians have fallen for this hollow ruse.) This new demagoguery became brazen in the early 1990s, openly endorsed in intellectual circles. A quote reflecting this thinking states that: [] Now many societies, and indeed the entire world, have learned how to create wealth directly. The new approach requires that a state find ways to increase the market value of its productive assets. Such an economic policy that aims to achieve growth by wealth creation therefore does not attempt to increase the production of goods and services, except as a secondary objective. 2 Other intellectuals could be quoted that advocate a similar approach. Here the point is clearly made that the apparition of rising wealthby hook or crookis to be focused on, not the real aspects of human labor, financial conditions or anything else. Wealtheven if only a dancing imitationhas become the focus of adulation. The core of this rotten ideology is found in high places. The lure of financial wealthmore exactly, the perception of wealthhas become a deliberate policy tool. Wealth goes before all and is above all. Make most people think that they are becoming wealthier, that more wealth gains are probable, and national prosperity and economic growth will follow. This hoodwink ensnarement played a great part in the current economic troubles now being faced by North America and other nations. Frankly, many people were carried away by their lusts. Whats the bottom line the profitable conclusion? Dont be fooled nor ensnared by funny money. Do not allow affections to settle upon such hollow promises of temporal prosperity and therefore to lose sight of eternal riches. This statement seemed to imply that Christs first return to receive the saints in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17) could not occur at a time of world crisis. If so, that would imply that the Rapture could not occur at the present time of worldwide fear and angst. This view is wrong for several reasons. Of course, it also undermines the concept of imminency that the Rapture can occur at any moment. As we concluded in Part I of this series, the current financial tremors do not qualify as the extraordinary times of trouble that will exist at the time of Christs return (at the end of the end of the Great Tribulation). Conditions then will be much worse. The global financial crisis (GFC) is not outside the experiential norms of the vast sweep of human history. What presently is viewed as a crisis in the minds of most people today is not sufficiently bad enough to qualify as a time where the Rapture cannot occur. It can indeed occur while people are being evicted from their homes in North America or thousands are starving or being maimed and killed in other parts of the world. Sadly, it is all a normal part of the baleful history of sinful mankind. Though we could be raptured at any time, just what lies ahead for the world? We provide two sets of answers in Part III. Free Will Dear Brother Froese, Some teach that Jesus died only for the elect and the un-elect cannot repent. Romans 5:6 teaches Christ died for the ungodly (AKJV). The word ungodly used in Romans 4:5 and 5:6 for the elect is the same word used in 1 Timothy 1:9; 2 Peter 2:5, 3:7; and Jude 1:4, 15 for the un-elect. Romans 5:18 teaches, Therefore as by the offence of one [Adam] judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one [Jesus] the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. First Timothy 4:10 teaches God is the Savior of all men, [not universally automatic but] specially of those that believe. Jesus preached repent and believe (Mark 1:15; Luke 13:1-5); while Paul taught that God commandeth all men every where to repent (Acts 17:30). Repentance by definition requires an act

of the human will, while faith to believe comes by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit (John 16) through the Scriptures and the splendor of creation (Psalm 19). In the Bible, freewill offerings to God were made by men not sealed by the eternal Spirit. If angels or humans have no free will at their inception, then God becomes unjust and the Author of sin. He would be compelling Lucifer and Adam to rebel in order to punish them. If God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), then surely the ungodly for whom Christ died consists of all humanity, including the so-called un-elect. The moment man admits to his sin, he is endued with the ability to grasp in faith the offer of salvation through Jesus Christ the Lord. The assumption that Gods intention is to only save a few is a cunning device of the father of lies, and stands in clear opposition to the words found in 1 Timothy 2:4: Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
Different Ministry? Dear Editor: I have been saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit since 1974. I have read the Bible from cover to
cover several times, and each time I read, the Holy Spirit teaches me something else that I didnt know before. My sister, who has been saved for four years and studies her Bible as I do now, told me what she believed about the Rapture. She and I had never discussed the Bible before she got saved, because she would not listen to any Bible thumper on anything religious. My sister told me that she believed she would be here during the Tribulation to teach unbelievers the Bible and not to take the mark. She said she was learning the Bible at a rapid rate since she and her husband were asked to leave the church they attended because they disagreed with the preaching of tickling the ears that was taking place since the old pastor had resigned. She said no Scripture was being preached, only stories about the Bible and the military life of the man that was chosen to replace the pastor who left. She began to tell me the Lord had taught them about the Mark of the Beast, the people who are lost due to the church teaching error, the falling away, and
the lack of love in the church for one another and lost people. She said her heart burned for the lost to know Jesus, and she wanted to tell everybody all the time. I told her all that was wonderful to hear, but why did she believe she would be here during the tribulation to teach unbelievers if she had accepted Jesus as her Savior and was baptized in the Holy Spirit; she was a member of the body of Christ and Jesus bride. I told her I believed that the Rapture would take us out to the marriage supper of the Lamb right before or at the moment the New World Order is to be set up, and that the Tribulation was for the Jews [not the bride] and those left behind, because the Tribulation is Jacobs Trouble and seven years long. That was under the Old Testament; the blood of animals served as a temporary covering, For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins(Hebrews 10:4). The precious blood of Jesus does not hide sin but takes it away: And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin (1 John 3:5). Hebrews 9:12 reads: Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. The Churchs great commission is to be a light. This light is the indwelling Holy Spirit. That is why the Lord commanded us:Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Unfortunately, we often follow the instruction in the reverse direction; we show off our works, thus hide the light.

Peter the Rock Dear Mr. Froese, Your editors made an egregious error in not catching Marcel Malgos false assertion that Jesus Christ intended to build His church on the person of the apostle Peter (The Calling of the Twelve Disciples Simon Peter, page 24, April MC). Malgo quotes Matthew 16:18 but does not quote the verse above it, which identifies the real rock to which Jesus referred: the granting of faith and insight from Almighty God. Our Lord never meant to base His church, the instrument by which His Word would be spread for two millennia now, on the fallible, weak character of one fallen human being. Rather, He was referencing the coming of the Holy Spirit, which changes a heart of stone to a heart of flesh in Gods elect and gives the believer eyes to see the lordship and magnificence of Jesus Christ our Savior. The Roman Catholic Church bases its entire argument regarding papal succession on Matthew 16:18, which identifies that body as a quasi-Christian cult. Surely your writers can do better than that. Answer: The Apostle Peter was the first to present the Gospel to the Jews, to the half-Jews, the Samaritans, and to the Gentiles. He was first in performing a miracle in the name of the Lord, and first to raise the dead to life. Jesus made the prophetic statement, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church. Is Peter the Rock? Of course not. Our Lord is the Rock of Salvation. Read further in this chapter; the Lord Jesus turned to Peter and said, Get thee behind me, Satan (verse 23). Did Peter become Satan? No, but the words he had just spoken were the words of the father of lies, Satan. On the same line, the words Peter spoke, Thou art Christ, the Son of the Living Godare the words of the Father. Based on Jesus words, God establishes His Church, and Peter is the preeminent apostle, the key person in the initiating of the church in Jerusalem (see verse 19). Answer: Our Lord Jesus Christ by His speech, walk and actions demonstrated that the Kingdom of God was only accessible through the New Birth.Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). By His actions, He prophetically exemplified that earthly family relationships will cease to exist: see Luke 14:26. The new relationship is based on knowing the Father through Jesus Christ; thus He said, For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother (Matthew 12:50). True, the pictures of the woman with the child and Jesus dead on the cross are not victorious, but neither would any demonstration of powerful splendor as our Mighty God and Savior be appropriate.
