Hesendethforthhis
commandment uponearth:
his wordrunnethvery swiftly
(Psalm147:15).
T
oday, more than ever, the above Scripture is applicable,
particularly relating to the word SWIFT. Almost instantly,
we can send forth the precious Word of God, His com-
mandment upon earth. Whether you reside in our city of Co-
lumbia, South Carolina, or on the other side of the world in
Australia, we can communicate instantaneously, 24 hours a
day throughout the year.
When the Lord states, His word runneth very swiftly, then
He expects each one of us to send forth this precious Word
very swiftly.
He used His prophets, priests and kings during Old Testa-
ment times to relay His message to His people. Once, He spoke
to Moses through the burning bush. At another time, He used
an animal to hinder the foolishness of a Gentile prophet. We
read of Gods revelation through visions and dreams, inspired
by the Holy Spirit; they were written down and thus, we have
the Old Testament.
The NewTestament likewise is the work of the Holy Spirit,
as documented in John 14:26, But the Comforter, which is the
Holy Ghost, whomthe Father will send in my name, he shall
teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you.
The distinction between the Old and the Newis made in the
first two verses of the book of Hebrews, God, who at sundry
times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fa-
thers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us
by his Son, whomhe hath appointed heir of all things, by
whomalso he made the worlds. Verse 1 speaks of the Old Tes-
tament, and verse 2 of the NewTestament.
Today, we have the privilege to proclaimthe full counsel of
God to people everywhere.

GivingThanks Always
By Dr. Ron J. Bigalke
Always giving thanksis a distinctly Christian
standard for living. The reason is that the word
thanksgivingis literally the idea of the good
grace of God. Genuine thanksgiving is confession

The great question that concerned the Jewish people at the time of Jesus was that regarding

Love your neighbor as
yourself (Matthew19:19).
E D I T O R S N O T E

Due to a personal accident, the sec-

tion from Sargans-Chur (Switzer-
land) is interrupted. Delays and
missing trains must be expected.
Once more, a tragic human fate is
hidden behind these sober words:
suicide on the rails. On the Swiss railway
network, trains run over a person more
than 150 times per year. A person must
be in deep despair and darkness to lie
down on the rails before an approaching
train! The nearer such a person was to
another, the more deeply this touches
our heart. Thus, I must also think over
and over again of that young married
man who did not know of any other way
out than to end his life by a firearm in
the spring of this year. This couple was
also on the list of those whom we wanted
to invite to our wedding. Now, this wife
with a small child stands there alone.
The man was a believer, but evidently he
was caught in the darkness of a depres-
sion much more deeply than the people
around him sensed. And in such a situa-
tion, one unintentionally asks oneself:
could one have prevented this? Might a
conversation, a few loving words of a
friend or an acquaintance perhaps have
helped him?
Unfortunately, it is a sign of our time
that individualism increases also among
us Christians. Everyone is neighbor to
his own self. One does not notice the
needs of someone else. Instead, one is
looking out for ones own advantages.
The cares of someone else, of our neigh-
bor, are not noticed. However, one of the
central commandments of our Lord is to
love our neighbor. What God already
commanded the people of Israel through
Moses is repeated by our Lord Jesus in
Matthew 19:19: Love your neighbor as
yourself. In Chapter 22:37, Jesus goes
even further. He speaks of the first and
greatest commandment: You shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your
mind. And then He adds in verse 39:
The second commandment is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as your-
self. Thus, it is made clear that our con-

OUR TASK
Midnight Call Ministries is a nonprofit missionary organization,
dedicated to proclaiming the entire Bible as the unfailing and eternal
written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the unerring
guide for the Christian faith.
The object of Midnight Call is to call people everywhere to Christ,
to proclaim the Second Coming of Christ, to prepare Christians for
His coming, and to uphold the faith and warn of false doctrines.
Midnight Call magazine is available in twelve languages. All work
done through radio, literature and missionaries is supported entirely
by the gifts and free will offerings of Gods people.
STATEMENT OF FAITH
WE BELIEVE in the divine inspiration of the whole Bible and there-
with the infallibility of the Holy Scripture, which is Gods Word, and
in the eternal Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
WE BELIEVE Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was conceived of the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, and shed His
blood to save mankind. He died and arose bodily the third day and
later ascended into heaven.
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ died in the place of each
individual sinner and that all who believe in Him as their personal
Savior are justified through His shed blood and have become
children of God.
WE BELIEVE that Israel is Gods chosen people, and that the
restoration of the Jews to their own land is the fulfillment of the
Word of God.
WE BELIEVE in the pretribulational appearance of Jesus Christ for
the Rapture of His Church (all born again believers).
WE BELIEVE in the immortality of our souls and the resurrection of
our bodies, and in the resurrection of the just and the unjust, the
everlasting blessedness of the saved and the everlasting punishment of
the lost.

duct toward our neighbor is of great importance. It is to have priority.
To have time for our neighbor, an open ear and open eyes, ought to be
determined by our deeds. What a few good words said at the right time
bring about, we read for example in the proverbs of Solomon: A word
fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver (Proverbs
25:11). Whether we can keep someone from suicide by such a loving
demeanor will be revealed only in eternity. In all this, let us never for-
get: God alone is the only true and just Judge of all people!
Let us also never forget that everyone who does not receive Jesus in
his heart is on the way to eternal perdition. But we are ordered to warn
such people, who are perhaps already standing on the rails of death.
Ezekiel 3, starting with verse 18, describes this in unequivocal words:
When I [God] say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou
givest him not warning, or speakest to warn the wicked from his
wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniq-
uity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the
wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way,
he shall die in his iniquity. And doubtless, when he sees a person lying
on the rails, every train engineer will do everything he can to warn
him. It is true that besides whistle signals and quick use of the brakes,
he cannot do much. When the warning was in vain, then the engineer
has no chance: The distance with use of the brakes till the train stops
is over one kilometer long, so one realizes that one really cannot do
anything and can only watch what happens. One consolation: where
our possibilities end, Gods possibilities begin! May the Lord give us
grace even in the most difficult situations, to point others to Jesus
Christ, the Anchor of salvation, and His help.

he settlers who founded the
New England colonies experi-
enced many difficulties and
hardships. As their inclinations were
thoroughly Christian, they fasted be-
fore God and prayed to Him as those
who were utterly dependent upon
Him. These early settlers declared
their supplications before Him who
could assuage their anguish. Contin-
ual thought upon their difficulties
and hardships occupied their minds
and caused distress and restlessness,
and the settlers even thought about
returning to their homeland with all
its religious persecution of them. The
settlers convened to decide upon a
community response. When someone
recommended another day to be des-
ignated for fasting and prayer, an or-
dinary man with some sanctified
sense, stated his thoughts that they
had agonized sufficiently regarding
their difficulties and hardships, and
recommended that it was the oppor-
tune time to contemplate upon the
mercies of God. For instance, the
colonies were developing in suffi-
ciency, which was evident by the de-
lightfulness of the atmosphere, the
increased harvest of the fields, the
plentiful supply of fish in the rivers,
and abundance of game in the woods.
Additionally, the wives of the settlers
were healthy, the children were sub-
missive, and the colonies now experi-
enced civil and religious liberty,
which was the reason they came to
the New World. The recommendation
was an amendment to the resolution
for a day of fasting, and to instead
celebrate a day of thanksgiving. As
all should know, that Thanksgiving
Day was to become an integral part of
the express culture and life of the
American people. Of course, for
Christians, one day a year to give
thanksgiving to God for all His bless-
ings is far from satisfactory.
To Live Thinking and Thanking
Scripture exhorts every Christian to
make music in ones heart, always giv-
ing thanks for all things in the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the
Father (Eph 5:19-20). Indeed, the
Apostle Paul learned to always give
thanks, even in his Roman imprison-
ment where he wrote the (Prison) Epis-
tles of Ephesians, Philippians, and
Colossians. Even in the distressing im-
prisonment of a Philippian jail, Paul
(and Silas, his fellow laborer) expressed
that same attitude of heart and mind. For
this reason, Paul could write to the Eph-

esians, Be filled with the Spirit . . . always
giving thanks for all things in the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
Always giving thanks is a distinctly
Christian standard for living. The reason
is that the word thanksgiving is literally
the idea of the good grace (eucharistia) of
God. The natural man is void of the grace
of God, and consequently does not honor
God or give thanks to Him (Rom 1:21).
Having experienced the free and sovereign
regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, the
Christian expresses faith in Christ and re-
pentance to God, and lives as one enrap-
tured with a life of gratitude and humility
by always giving thanks to God. A life of
thanksgiving is truly exalting of God, or
literally giving thanks . . . to God, even
the Father.
The Christian life is that of thinking
and thanking. To think in the old Anglo-
Saxon language was seen also in thanks;
literally, thinkfulness is thankfulness. A life
of thanksgiving is always a witness to the
salvific work of Christ. Thanks to God is
given in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Christians are only able to ap-
proach God boldly because of the redemp-
tive work of Christ on their behalf. The
Lord Jesus Christ is the crowning thought
of thanksgiving. Genuine thanksgiving is
confession and living with Jesus Christ as
Lord of ones life. Living a life always giv-
ing thanks demands the Christian to be
careful how you walk, not as unwise men
but as wise, making the most of your time,
because the days are evil (Eph 5:15-16).
The Christian life is living with thanksgiv-
ing; a Christian does not make the most of
time when instead there is agonizing over
difficulties and hardships. Scripture ex-
horts us to give thanks for all things (a
solemn thought, considering the man in-
spired to write those words was frequently
imprisoned on behalf of his Lord Jesus
Christ).
Be anxious for nothing, but in every-
thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made
known to God (Phil 4:6). Prayer and the
Word of God are the source of true
strength and the means to success. Con-
tentment resides in the power of God, as
believers adjust to circumstances. Paul
said he knew how to adjust his life when
he had little and when he had much. Em-
ploying military language (God . . . will
guard), Scripture reminds believers that
the Lord will have His peace take posses-
sion of their hearts and minds in Christ
Jesus (4:7). If there is any doubt with re-
gard to pursuing the best things in life,
verses 8-9 give instruction for regulating
ones life.
How to be Content in Life
1) Be anxious for nothing
2) Be prayerful for everything
3) Be thankful for anything
The days of our life are filled with dan-
gers and deceptions; therefore, we need to
rely upon wisdom, using our time wisely
(Eph 5:15-16). The will of the Lord is for
His people to live carefully and cautiously
by living consistently with the wisdom of
His Word (5:17). As opposed to being
drunk with wine (which would also in-
clude any drugs that stupefy), the Christ-
ian is to be filled with the Spirit (5:18;
cf. Col 3:16). The believer determines the
will of God, and how to obey and serve
Him by the Holy Spirits enablementas
opposed to being drunk, which leads to
ruin and the immorality already described
in verses 3-4.
Genuine thanksgiving is confession and living with Jesus Christ as Lord of ones life. Living a lifealways giving
thanksdemands the Christian tobe careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of
your time, because the days are evil(Eph 5:15-16).
Giving Thanks Always
C O V E R S T O R Y
Ephesians 5 verses 19-21 indicate four
participlesspeaking, making melody
(music), giving thanks, and being sub-
ject (submitting)that modify the verb
be filled in verse 18. The first two partici-
ples suggest the importance of Scripture
and music to be filled with (or by) the Holy
Spirit. A thankful attitude is the third char-
acteristic of being filled, and the final char-
acteristic is submission (obedience and
respect) to authorities, whether internally-
earned authority (Gk. dunamis, oovoi)
or an externally-conferred authority (Gk.
exousia, :oooio) (cf. 5:33; 1 Pet 3:1-6).
As we let the Word of God dwell richly
with us (Acts 13:52; Eph 5:18; Col 3:16),
we understand the will of God. The Holy
Spirit applies Gods truth to our lives, and
as we yield ourselves in obedient steward-
ship, allowing ourselves to be governed by
the truth, we experience Gods empower-
ment and enablement. Whatever experi-
ences life may bring, the grace of God
compels us to express hearts and minds
filled with thanksgiving. As the old hymn
teaches: Count your blessings, name
them one by one; Count your blessings,
see what God hath done; Count your
blessings, name them one by one, and it
will surprise you what the Lord hath
done.
To Live Joyfully
The essence of thanksgiving is to be
filled with the Spirit, speaking to one an-
other in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, making melody with your heart to
the Lord; always giving thanks (Eph
5:18-20). Giving thanks is not something
indefinable or theoretical; it is a both a
mindset and activity that is defined bibli-
cally and explicit spiritually. The mindset
of thanksgiving is to be filled with the
Spirit, speaking to one another. In a par-
allel passage, Paul taught that this speak-
ing includes teaching and admonishing
one another (Col 3:16). One of the many
gifts that God has given His people is con-
versational fellowship. The essence of
thanksgiving also includes continual ex-
pression of the joy that is only possible
with God as Lord and Savior of ones life.
The exhortation of Scripture to speak
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
making melody, means a joyful life of
witness and worship in mind (again, Paul
and Silas set the example of witness and
worship in Acts 16:23-40). Being subject
to one another in the fear [reverence] of
Christ (Eph 5:21) is also the essence of
thanksgiving. The one who is always giv-
ing thanks is also to express the fear
[reverence] of Christ.
God has promised provision beyond
calculation (Phil 4:1-23). The resources

available to the child of God are accord-
ing to His riches in glory. Every believer
should know the experience of relying
upon the promises of God for every need
supplied. Not to prove God faithful in
His promises and provisions is to impov-
erish ones self. As needs are often in the
physical realm, believers may be con-
vinced that God delights to manifest His
power and riches in everyday life. Believ-
ers may also be confident that the grace
of God received by faith and repentance
will result in overabundant provision in
the higher realm of spiritual need. God is
to be the joy and boast of every believer,
for He is their very life.
To Live with Praise and Glory
Genuine thanksgiving means one is
filled with the Spirit. The fullness of
the Holy Spirit requires the incoming of
the Holy Spirit. The incoming only oc-
curs when one who is dead in sins and
trespasses (Eph 2:1) is regenerated, that
is, born again (John 3:3), by the free and
sovereign Holy Spirit (John 3:8). The
Holy Spirit first enters our lives through
the new birth by raising those who are
dead in sins and trespasses alive together
with Christ. The incoming of the Holy
Spirit is the prerequisite for being filled
with the Holy Spirit. When the Holy
Spirit fills the Christians life, then gen-
uine thanksgiving is but natural. Gen-
uine, Christian thanksgiving is not a
work of the flesh, but is the inevitable
and irresistible activity and mindset, as
the Holy Spirit fills the life of those re-
deemed by Christ and belonging to Him,
to the praise and glory of the Father.
To Love God and Enjoy Him Forever
Thanksgiving Day for the Christian is an
activity and a mindset that is expressed
each and every day. Indeed, God created
man to love Him and enjoy Him forever. It
is for this purpose that God has so lavishly
blessed His people with His grace and
mercy. Now that we know more of what it
means to live thinkfully and thankfully,
may the life of the Christian truly be lived
in the fullness of the Holy Spirit, and
thereby always giving thanks for all
things each and every day. (462)
God has promised provision beyond calculation (Phil 4:1-23). The resources available to the child of God are
according to His riches in glory. Every believer should know the experience of relying upon the promises of God
for every need supplied.

with what the Bible says about the
Antichrist, as they also speak of a

sider the prophetic Word more closely,
however, I am not so sure that these two
views agree with one another. Why is
this?
Christian representatives of the con-
spiracy theories point to the fact that ul-
timately God allows these events to take
place, allegedly over hundreds or thou-
sands of years. But does such a thesis
agree with the testimony of the Scrip-
tures? In Romans 1, we read how the
Lord abandons the people to their sinful
desires. In Matthew 24:12, Christ speaks
of an increase of iniquity: And because
iniquity shall abound, the love of many
shall wax cold. In 2 Thessalonians 2:3,
the great apostasy is spoken of which
precedes the appearing of the man of
sin: Let no man deceive you by any
means: for that day shall not come, ex-
cept there come a falling away first, and
that man of sin be revealed, the son of
perdition. This has little to do with the
world conspiracy theories, however, but
makes it clear that ultimately God al-
lows sin and godlessness to develop.
As far as the events are concerned
which will shake this world to its foun-
dations, we read in no other place that

We have two prophetic books in
which the end-times lines leading to the
Antichrist are clear. We must ask our-
selves, therefore, whether we find world
conspiracy theories or traces of them in
these. If this is not the case, there are
two possibilities:
1. All the world conspiracy theories
do not come from the testimony of the
Scriptures, but the father of lies.
2. All the world conspiracy theories
are so irrelevant and unimportant in
Gods eyes that He does not waste one
word on them in His Word.
In the next two articles, we will con-
cern ourselves with the prophet Daniel
and the testimony of the Revelation.

Crisis of Virtue: Lying and Stealing
Escalates
To the disappointment of many policymakers and economists around the
globenot to mention the millions of captive households in North
America and around the worldthe Global Financial Crisis (GFC)
continues. Midnight Call readers will likely not be surprised.
B y W i l f r e d H a h n
P
revious columns in this
space have excerpted
some key sections from
the 2009 book, Global Finan-
cial Apocalypse Prophesied: Pre-
serving True Riches in an Age of
Deception and Trouble. The book
remains as relevant as ever, explaining
why and how this current global crisis
is only the beginning. (Authored by
this writer, it is available from Mid-
night Call.) Most important, unlike
other works on present day finance
and economics, it focuses on the Bibli-
cal corroborations of the views pre-
sented. In fact, its conclusions strive to
be obedient to Scriptures and Bible
prophecy the future written in ad-
vance.
Such Biblically-derived perspectives
are not warmly welcomed in the secular
field of financial and political econom-
ics. Not infrequently, commentators
employ the tactic of discrediting the
secular writings and research of this
writer because of a professed Biblical
worldview. It is a tired and cowardly
tactic. Few have the courage to debate
the eternal values that they feel may
affront their preferred humanist world-
view.
Be that as it may, following is a short
excerpt from a recent issue of one the
secular publications that this writer
publishes. It reemphasizes the view of
many previous articles, not to mention
the book, Global Financial Apocalypse
Prophesied (GFAP).
Our view is that, no, the Global Financial
Crisis (GFC) is not over. Put simply, it is only
morphing into new forms. The GFC contin-
ues. We may seem to be fixated on this
topic [] this horrendous shock to the de-
veloped nations of the world. And, it is true,
that very few any longer comment on GFC-
related issues, believing that it is a subject
of the past. [ ]
It is a misleading perspective. How so?
Firstly, the causes of the GFC have not yet
been rectified let alone agreed upon by
policymakers. Secondly, three years later,
underlying conditions for the worlds com-
mercial systems are now even worse than
before, their vulnerability to further out-
breaks of crisis heightened. Of course, this
is not the popular or prevalent perception.
But, this would not be a surprise. Why?
Governments and transnational organi-
zations have simply transformed the origi-
nal form of the crisisnamely, collapsing
real estate values, insolvent banks,
overindebtedness in the private sector, and
the subsequent global demand shock
into another temporary one. The latter now
takes the form of massive public
overindebtedness (government debt), un-
sustainable budget deficits and over-in-
flated financial markets. These are
conditions that cannot continue indefi-
nitely. That means it must stop. But at what
point?
Already, the consequences of post-GFC
actions are clearly evident and clear to see.
For instance, much of the European bank-
ing system and the European Central Bank
may be technically insolvent due to the
collapse of Greek and Portuguese bond
markets. We will repeat this: Based on cur-
rent market values, these financial institu-
tions may now be insolvent. But why have
world stock and bond markets hardly
tremored?
Summing up the post-inception GFC
period, virtually all the worlds policymak-
ers and monetary chieftains huffed and
puffed as never before to reflate world eco-
nomic growth. They have been trying to
out-run past errors and the deflationary
maws of deleveraging and insolvency. The
recovery momentum of both economies
and financial marketswhether sham or
realcannot yet be conclusively said to
have attainedescape velocity certainly
not for the U.S., UK, Ireland and a host of
others countries.
The rocket fuel and bungee cord
analogies that we have used in our com-
mentaries of recent years are again timely
to reconsider. Now, the rocket fuel is near
spent; the rebounding elastic cords of in-
ventory rebuilding and pent-up demand
are losing their thrust. The orbit of the
rocket craft again begins its decay, drawn
by the gravitational pulls of deleveraging,
decelerating government stimulus and ca-
reening debt levels. Just what will supply
another booster stage? We dont see it.
1
Events of this year to date have cer-
tainly vindicated these comments, no
matter that the analyst may be a Bible-
believer. We have spared the reader the
detailed economic theory that may be
argued in these secular forums. But just
why is it that the Global Financial Crisis
is continuing? Are these merely matters
of finance and economics? Hardly. These
are only the symptoms of the problem.
Root Causes
George Friedman, geopolitical analyst
extraordinaire (and CEO of Stratfor),
commenting on the continued global fi-
nancial and political crisis, expresses
this insightful opinion:
No regulatory system works if it is not en-
forced. No reform is meaningful if it is not
going to be enforced. The crisis is the per-
ception, not that there was not regulation,
but that no one enforced the regulation.
The crisis is not that new regulation is not
emerging, its that they wont be enforced

anyway. Ill put it this way: this is a cri-
sis in virtuein the virtue of the po-
litical leadership, in the virtue of the
financial leaders. Theres expected to be
a certain degree of self-restraint and
moral probity. You cant substitute regu-
lations for that, and you cant worry about
whether or not theyre going to be en-
forced in the future.
2
His view aligns with the Bible
(though perhaps not deliberately so). It
is rare that mainstream analysts discuss
such issues as virtue and morals.
The prevailing school of thought pro-
moted today, in the fields of political and
financial economy, is that these arenas
operate outside of the effects of virtue
and morality.
The truth of the matter is that the
crises we observe in the world today,
find their root in the hearts of mankind.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him the iniq-
uity of us all (Isaiah 53:6). This condi-
tion expresses itself globally in the last
days. Prophesies David about these
times: The LORD looks down from
heaven on the sons of men to see if there
are any who understand, any who seek
God. All have turned aside, they have
together become corrupt; there is no one
who does good, not even one (Psalm
14:2-3; 53:2-3).
A period similar to the days of Noah
again would occur when the wicked-
ness of man was great in the earth, and
that every imagination of the thoughts
of his heart was only evil continually
Genesis 6:5).
Greed and Rotting Foundations
One does not need to be a geopolitical
expert to recognize that greed, self-inter-
est and corruption at the highest levels,
have completely rotted out the founda-
tions of many societies. One would have
to be spiritually blind to not recognize
the destructive influences of greed.
It is not a problem that affects Amer-
ica alone. In fact, corruption is no worse
in America than anywhere else. The
same, though in varying degrees, applies
to all nations most certainly Euro-
pean leadership, China and all others.
Most pointedly, the greed of elites is
rife. (See the 2-part article series, Last-
Day Oppressors: Honored Elites & an
Indebted World Order, MCM April and
May 2010). It expresses itself in many
ways, no matter whether a country is
communist, democratic, a kingdom or a
caliphate.
In the West (but increasingly so in
the non-advanced nations), corporate
interests have become extremely influ-
ential and powerful. While one does not
need to agree with all of his views,
Noam Chomskys observation in this
matter certainly aligns with this authors
experience in the corporate world:
Corporate powers ascendancy over poli-
tics and society by now mostly financial
has reached the point that both political
organizations, which at this stage barely re-
semble traditional parties, are far to the
right of the population on the major issues
under debate.
Meanwhile new gifts are regularly lav-
ished on Wall Street. The House Appropria-
tions Committee cut the budget request

sion, the prime barrier against financial
fraud. The Consumer Protection Agency
is unlikely to survive intact.
Two major elements were financial-
ization (the shift of investor preference
from industrial production to so-called
FIRE: finance, insurance, real estate) and
the offshoring of production. The ideo-
logical triumph of free market doc-
trines, highly selective as always,
administered further blows, as they were
translated into deregulation, rules of cor-
porate governance linking huge CEO re-
wards to short-term profit, and other
such policy decisions.
The resulting concentration of wealth
yielded greater political power, accelerat-
ing a vicious cycle that has led to extra-
ordinary wealth for a fraction of 1
percent of the population, mainly CEOs
of major corporations, hedge fund man-
agers and the like, while for the large ma-
jority real incomes have virtually
stagnated.

Rampant Lying and Stealing
We see that worldwide greed and a cri-
sis of virtue is unfolding. What does
the Bible have to say? An exposition of
Zechariah 5 provides a window on
these trends that the world is experi-
encing today. A two-part article series
entitled Flying Scrolls and Baskets: A
Vision of Today, outlined a connec-
tion (MCM May and June 2007 is-
sues). It ties in directly to the
commericalized corruption that we see
enveloping the world today. Amaz-
ingly, this short chapter of only 11
verses, contains two separate but im-
portant visions of the endtimes. Read-
ers may recall the account of a giant
scroll that is levitating in the air
(verses 1 to 4). Right after this, the an-
gel speaking to Zechariah shows him
another vision. We then see a strange
picture of an ephah (measuring bas-
ket) being carried by two women with
the wings of storks.
We concluded that the false witness
(lying) and the stealing being men-
tioned specifically had to do with the
global idolatrous commercialism and
corruption of all human life on earth in
the last days, depicted in the second vi-
sion. Pinpointed were the two sins that
are mainly responsible for the filthy
idolatry that was shown in the flying
ephahlying and stealing.
Encompassed in these visions, we
concluded, was everything from the el-
evation of manipulative and global
monetary systems, fiat money, capital-
ism, competitive globalism based on
the vested interest of intertwined
worldwide trading systems, accounting
shenanigans, corporatism and debt-
based wealth to grand larceny. All to-
gether it represents that heaving mass
of Mammonisma world that has cho-
sen Money over God.
According to the visions, the corro-
siveness and imbalances of these sys-
tems literally consumed the timber
thereof and the stones thereof
(Zechariah 5:4), this symbolizing the
collapse of mankinds globalized foun-
dation. For such systems to prosper
prospering here meaning nothing more
than giving the semblance of success,
though its underpinnings are deceitful
and not sustainablethey depend
upon two impulses alone. What are
these? To no surprise, the very two sins
of stealing and false witness.
Current trends and events most cer-
tainly reflect a rise in lying and steal-
ing, as these continue to become more
organized, sophisticated and global-
ized than ever before in history.
Here is just a smattering of represen-
tative trends that could be cited.
According to the U.S. Bureau of

Bank Credit Analyst dated May 24,
2011) margins of overseas business
have swung up relatively suddenly. Be-
tween 2000 and 2008, profit margins
of overseas management companies
(most of these just a mail drop on a
sub-tropical island somewhere) rose
from 25.8% to 57%. Alternatively, seg-
menting overseas profits by country,
we discover that profit margins in
Other Western Hemisphere ex-
ploded from 37% to 103.7%. That cat-
egory is a catch-all that includes most
tax havens. We are not sure how a
profit margin can be greater than
100%. But apparently, this is now pos-
sible in the corrupt and weird world of
multinational corporation profits.

drug companies. Not surprisingly, in

antipsychotics became the single top-
selling therapeutic class of prescrip-
tion drugs in the United States.

In the United States, UNODC esti-
mates that smugglers are paid around

Americans over the border every year.
Though it would seem as though this
equates to a $7 billion outflow from
developing countries, in fact this
amount is more than made up in the
$20 billion in remittances which mi-
grants send back to Latin America
every year.
In January 2011, approximately
300 economists signed a letter urging

The letter cited a study that found that
the vast majority of economists did
not reveal their private affiliations
when writing academic papers on fi-
nancial regulatory reform or opinion
pieces in newspapers. It also cited a
Reuters investigation of lack of disclo-
sure of consulting gigs and director-
ships in congressional testimony. Only
a handful of its 18,000 members have
bothered to offer any input.

Thoughts to Ponder
It is no surprise that the worlds
economies and financial markets today
baffle observers and frustrate the theories
of economists, scientists and mathemati-
cians. They like to believe that the only
thing needed to rectify current troubles is
to tinker and revise (reform) their theo-
ries. However, many are very unsettled by
the fact that their views have been so
wrong. As such, this would only be an
early foreshadowing of a future time de-
scribed in the Bible: On the earth, na-
tions will be in anguish and perplexity at
the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men
will faint from terror, apprehensive of
what is coming on the world (Luke
21:25-26).
The present-day lying and stealing of
the elites, align with the observations
of the Old Testament prophets during the
corrupt ruling regimes of both ancient Is-
rael and Judah.
The following verses capture the mood
of similar Old Testament times: When
will the New Moon be over that we may
sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that
we may market wheat?skimping the
measure, boosting the price and cheating
with dishonest scales, buying the poor
with silver and the needy for a pair of
sandals, selling even the sweepings with
the wheat (Amos 8:5-6). We see that
commerce and making money were up-
permost in the minds of people.
It only follows that a materialistic so-
ciety by necessity must be a greedy one.
They all turn to their own way, each
seeks his own gain. Come, each one
cries, let me get wine! Let us drink our
fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like
today, or even far better (Isaiah 56:11-
12). With their mouths they express de-
votion, but their hearts are greedy for
unjust gain (Ezekiel 33:31). We see that
all of Judahs society was infected with
burning greed. Gain had become the mo-
tive and incentive for all human action.
Greed was certainly not limited to the
heathen or the non-believer. Rather, the
deceitful practices driven by greed found
a home in the highest institutions of the
land, including its priesthood. From the
least to the greatest, all are greedy for
gain; prophets and priests alike, all prac-
tice deceit (Jeremiah 6:13).
We see the same characteristics today,
but now global in scope. We again turn
to the secular observations of George
Friedman regarding current crises:
You have to look at the more fundamental
issue. People who were supposed to be ex-
perts in finance did inexcusably stupid
things and also in the process, profited
handsomely. People in the political system
who were supposed to hold these people
accountable and prevent them from doing
these things, failed to do it. I think in most

countries we expect our politicians to steal a
little money here and there on expense ac-
counts, we expect bickering in Congress
we expect these things. But when the
fundamental thing that legitimizes an elite,
the financial elites ability to manage money
prudently, is violated in two ways. First, that
they clearly cant do it. And secondly that
they profit from it anyway. And when the
politicians obligation to stabilize the system
and not let people get away with this does-
nt happen, you have serious problems. So I
think the problem really starts with the sys-
temic failure of two major elites
4
We observe a crisis of virtue. It is ex-
emplified by societys leaders, their politi-
cians and other elites. In fact, it is a
reflection of society overall around the
world. We conclude with the same two
recommendations that we often repeat:
Firstly, be warned: those who dont
want to endorse the prevailing system of
greed and elitism will face opposition,
troubles possibly also economic cap-
tivity.
The second message is that there is
hope: though conditions may seem diffi-
cult, and insecurities may press in from
every side, Jeremiah provides a comfort-
ing promise: But blessed is the man
who trusts in the Lord, whose confi-
dence is in him. He will be like a tree
planted by the water that sends out its
roots by the stream. It does not fear
when heat comes; its leaves are always
green. It has no worries in a year of
drought and never fails to bear fruit
(Jeremiah 17:7-8). Its a simple message:
trust not in gold, share portfolios and
wealth. Trust in the Lord foremost, and
there will be no reason to worry about
droughts.

he great question that concerned the Jewish
people at the time of Jesus was that regard-
ing the person and authority of Jesus Christ.
He had performed many signs and wonders, healed
sick people and raised others from the dead, and
satisfied thousands of people with bread and fish.
He walked on the water, calmed the storm and cast
out demons. These were clearly signs of His Messi-
ahship. The question rightly arose, then, could Je-
sus Christ be the promised Redeemer? Was He the
one the prophets had proclaimed long ago? This
question among the people is found in John 7:40-
53, Many of the people therefore, when they heard
this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others
said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ
come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said, That
Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the
town of Bethlehem, where David was? So there was a
division among the people because of him. And some
of them would have taken him; but no man laid
hands on him. Then came the officers to the chief
priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why
have ye not brought him? The officers answered,
Never man spake like this man. Then answered them
the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? Have any of the
rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? But this

people who knoweth not the law are cursed. Nicode-
mus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night,
being one of them,) Doth our law judge any man, be-
fore it hear him, and know what he doeth? They an-
swered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee?
Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no
prophet. And every man went unto his own house.
In spite of the clear proof, the clerics of that time
ended the question of the Messiah with one single
sentence, Search, and look: for out of Galilee
ariseth no prophet. Thus, the honest quest of many
people was thwarted and nipped in the bud. This
was because Jesus did not fit their picture of Him,
and they were simultaneously in danger of losing
their authority, their job, as representatives of the
old covenant. All this may be the reason that people
carried on with their lives. They even resorted to the
lie, Out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. The Scribes,
who knew the Bible well, were also familiar with the
book of Jonah. They knew what was written in 2
Kings 14:23-25, In the fifteenth year of Amaziah
the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of
Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and
reigned forty and one years. And he did that which
was evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not
from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who
made Israel to sin. He restored the coast of Israel
from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the
plain, according to the word of the Lord God of Is-
rael, which he spake by the hand of his servant
Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of
Gathhepher. So they deliberately denied one of
their own prophets: Jonah.
Jonah. Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah
the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that
great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is
come up before me (Jonah 1:1-2). The prophet
Jonah is well known to many through the story of the
great fish that swallowed him. Jonah came fromGath-
hepher, a little place in Galilee, quite close to
Nazareth. Jonah lived around 750 B.C.
Bible critics call the book of Jonah religious fantasy.
They are of the opinion that the events of the book
could never have taken place, or that they are illustra-
tions to teach us certain truths. Others maintain that
the described events come from the pen of a literary
genius, or that they are legends similar to William Tell
or Robin Hood.
It is interesting to note how Jesus spoke of the per-
son and the book of the prophet Jonah. For Him,
Jonah was a real, historical personality, and his book
belongs to the Word of God. Jesus Christ, who made
the laws of nature and who bears the whole universe
and holds it together, simply accepted Jonah as a fact.
He even quoted Jonah to the people who persecuted
and finally rejected Him, An evil and adulterous gen-
eration seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be
given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: for as
Jonas was three days and three nights in the whales
belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three
nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh
shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here
(Matthew 12:39-41). Jesus assumed that His oppo-
nents knew the truth but did not want to accept it.
They closed their ears and hearts and behaved as
though they had never heard of Jonah. According to
them, Jonah never existed, Out of Galilee ariseth no
prophet. By doing this they took refuge in lies and
went back to their daily lives, And every man went
unto his own house.
Jonah had a message to proclaim which did not
suit many of them. Should the Word of God be pro-
claimed to the Assyrians? Were they not excluded
from the grace of God? For many, this was unthink-
able. The Assyrians were well known for their god-
lessness and their bloodthirsty nature. Moreover, they
were a continual potential military threat to Israel.
And now these people should have a message from
God proclaimed to them? For a prophet who pro-
claimed Gods salvation to such people, there could
be only one result: they were erased from the annals
and their existence denied. The tragic consequence
was: a prophet Jonah, the man from Galilee, never ex-
isted!
It was clear to the spiritually elite: had not God
chosen them? Was not Israel the chosen people?
Were not they chosen to be a light to the Gentiles?
Did not God dwell in His sanctuary in Jerusalem?
These blessings led Israel to complacency, to an elitist
way of thinking and spiritual self-righteousness. This
ultimately kept them from realizing their divine com-

mission toward the Gentiles. Through the prophet
Isaiah, God had already said, I will also give thee for
a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salva-
tion unto the end of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). When
Paul drew the attention of the clerics of that time to
this fact, we see the following reaction, But when the
Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy,
and spake against those things which were spoken by
Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and
Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that
the word of God should first have been spoken to
you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge your-
selves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the
Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, say-
ing, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that
thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the
earth (Acts 13:45-47). Israel was chosen by God to
be a blessing to the Gentiles, to be a light for the na-
tions, and a witness of the living God for the whole
world. Yet neither Jonah nor Jesus Christ or an apos-
tle Paul fitted into their picture. They thought the
message of these people robbed them of their exclu-
sive position of priority.
Jonahs flight. But Jonah rose up to flee unto
Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went
down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to
Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down
into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the pres-
ence of the Lord (Jonah 1:3). Jonah may have had
various reasons for his flight. Fear of the Assyrians?
Who would want to go to their own execution? His
elitist way of thinking: We are the people of God.
What do these unbelievers want? Or was it simply
his resistance to Gods command? We do not know
Jonahs reasons, but does this not remind us of our
own lives? Are we always obedient to God and His
Word? Have we not also the tendency to close our in-
ner ears? There are sometimes things in our lives
which God has often drawn our attention to. But, no,
we will not be told! There are certain patterns of be-
havior, perhaps, which the Holy Spirit has shown us
that we must renounce, and yet There are certain
sins maybe, and God tells us to lay them aside, and
yet we cling to them. We tend to point to Jonah, his
objections, fears, his running away, his wrong behav-
ior and his anger. But do we behave any better?
Jonah was disobedient to Gods command. Such
things always have consequences sooner or later. His
disobedience unleashed the forces of nature and
brought the ship and cargo in danger, and we read,
But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and
there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship
was like to be broken (Jonah 1:4). Innocent people
were also affected, Then the mariners were afraid,
and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the
wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of
them (verse 5). Jonahs disobedience ultimately
brought him to the verge of death, So they took up
Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea (verse 15).
Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow
up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three
days and three nights (verse 17).
This account is continually questioned, yet Jesus
Himself confirmed the truth of it by saying, For as
Jonas was three days and three nights in the whales
belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three
nights in the heart of the earth (Matthew 12:40).
Professor E. Wilder-Smith wrote in his (German)
book A Scientist in the Pulpit, The meeting of the
prophet Jonah with the fish has been an object of
mockery for non-Christians for a long time. It is al-
ways supposed that a whale swallowed him and then
spat him out again, which, of course, is hardly possi-
bly because normally whales have much too narrow a
gullet. The strange thing about this account, however,
is the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ quoted the meet-
ing of Jonah with the fish as being fact. This has cer-
tain consequences. If the account is a story, and if
Jesus looked upon it as historically true, then the Son
Jonahs disobedience unleashed
the forces of nature and brought the
ship and cargo in danger.

of God was wrong and He is not infallible. Then He
erred and actually He lied, because He maintained He
was the truth in person. It seems to me to be impossi-
ble that Jesus was one with the Father and at the same
time spread human mistakes!
Either we believe the account of Jonah uncondi-
tionally and accept it, or we question it, and thereby
Jesus Christ also. The consequence would be that His
Word, the Bible, His redemption and His promise of
salvation would also be cast overboard. There is only
one alternative; either all or nothing! For Jesus
Christ, the events in the book of Jonah were real and
a true historical happening. It was so real that He
even used it as an example of His own death and res-
urrection. Various reports of people who experienced
and survived similar situations as Jonah prove that it
is quite possible. One report is worth mentioning: In
1892 a whaling ship Star of the East was in the vicinity
of the Falkland Islands hunting whales. A crew in a
small boat were able to harpoon a large whale. But the
whale overturned the boat and the crew fell into the
water. While the men attempted to reach the whaling
ship, the whale attacked again and one man disap-
peared. When it surfaced a little while later it was able
to be caught. When it was cut open the missed man
was found in its stomach. He was unconscious but
alive. His skin was very yellow, his eyes and ears very
much affected and he was out of his mind. Only after
weeks did he recover. James Bartley, as the man was
called, never regained his normal appearance. His
skin remained yellow, wrinkled and looked like
parchment.
1
On the grounds of his disobedience, Jonah nowex-
perienced a true journey into hell. Whether he was
conscious during this time, we do not know. In the
time, however, in which he was, he did one thing: he
prayed! And so we read, For thou hadst cast me into
the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods com-
passed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed
over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet
I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters
compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth
closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped
about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the
mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for
ever (Jonah 2:3-6). Jonah cried in his desperation to
the Lord, When my soul fainted within me I remem-
bered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee,
into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vani-
ties forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto
thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that
I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord (verses 7-9).
In his plight, Jonah experienced what it means
when it says in Psalm50:15, Call upon me in the day
of trouble: I will deliver thee. And we read, And the
Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah
upon the dry land (Jonah 2:10). It would be interest-
ing to know what Jonah looked like and how he
smelt! It could be that Jonah smelt of vomit, and that
his skin was burned by the gastric acid. Perhaps he
lost his hair, and he looked more like an Egyptian
mummy than a human being. He was a walking,
stinking warning with leathery, wrinkled and yellow
skin, who had escaped from hell and bore the signs of
it. Once again, God commanded him, Arise, go unto
Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the
preaching that I bid thee. So Jonah arose, and went
unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three
days journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a
days journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days,
and Nineveh shall be overthrown (Jonah 3:2-4).
Jonah must have aroused quite an upheaval in
Nineveh. His appearance, his smell and his message
must have deeply shocked the people of Nineveh.
They saw that here was a man who not only warned
of hell, but who had gone through hell himself. And
the inconceivable thing happened, So the people of
Nineveh believed God (verse 5). The people saw
that here a man was speaking at Gods command.
This had consequences, and proclaimed a fast,
and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even
to the least of them. For word came unto the king of
Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid
his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth,
and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed
and published through Nineveh by the decree of the
king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor
beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not
feed, nor drink water: but let man and beast be cov-
ered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God; yea,
let them turn every one from his evil way, and from
the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if
God will turn and repent, and turn away from his

fierce anger, that we perish not? And God saw their
works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do
unto them; and he did it not (verses 5-10).
God sees our hearts and He says, I have no plea-
sure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked
turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your
evil ways: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
(Ezekiel 33:11). Nineveh, the capital of the kingdom
of Assyria, which was known for being brutal and
merciless, repented. The whole city turned around,
repented of their deeds and heeded God. And God
had mercy on them, And should I not spare Nin-
eveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore
thousand persons that cannot discern between their
right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
(Jonah 4:11). One hundred and twenty thousand
people who could not tell their right hand from their
left: those were children between 1 and 4 years of age,
not counting their parents, siblings and grandparents.
God has mercy on us because He does not desire
the death of the sinner, but that he is converted and
lives! Are you meant here? However your past may
be, your present life may be, God is also saying to
you, For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life (John
3:16). If God wanted to promise forgiveness to a city
like Nineveh, which was known for her dark past,
this also applies to you. He wants to blot out your
sins, just as it says in Isaiah 44:22, I have blotted out,
as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud,
thy sins: return unto me; for I have re-
deemed thee. Gods compassion is also for
you, as it says in the New Testament, in Eph-
esians 1:7, In whom (Jesus Christ) we have
redemption through his blood, the forgive-
ness of sins, according to the riches of his
grace.
Jonah and the history of the Jewish peo-
ple. When we compare Jonah with Israel, we
discover interesting parallels: Jonah was
called, like Israel, to be a witness to the Gen-
tiles, the lost world, and to be Gods messen-
ger. He was to bring them near to the reality,
holiness and righteousness of God. But pride
and national patriotism kept Jonah, as also Israel,
from fulfilling this task. Both refused to carry out
their divine calling at first and departed from the face
of God. Jonah boarded a ship, while the Jews became
worldwide merchantsever restless, driven and
hunted by wild seas of nations. It is interesting, how-
ever, that neither Jonah nor the people of Israel de-
nied their true origin, even in the face of death. Even
in their greatest trouble, in the midst of the gas cham-
bers of the Holocaust, they confessed the true God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Jews were abandoned
to human hell. Jonah was swallowed up by a whale or
fish, and for Israel a centuries-long odyssey over the
seas of the nations began, which ended in the gas
chambers of the Holocaust. After they had escaped
from this hell, both were scarred. Jonah was spat out
by the whale, and Israel was carried back by the
waves of the sea of nations to the land promised to
her by God. While Jonah proclaimed Gods message
to Nineveh, in our day Israel is being prepared for the
time when she will proclaim Gods message of salva-
tion among the nations during the millennium of
peace. While Jonah left the world stage 2,700 years
ago, Israel is appearing on it again. And Gods goal is,
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth,
saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and
live ye (Ezekiel 18:32). (MR0711/459)

D
id you think fifteen years ago, in the midst of the
1990s, that we would still be here after the year
2010? I imagine many of us speculated about the
Rapture and thought it must be imminent, and that we
would not even live to experience the beginning of the
new millennium.
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the
Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious
fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he
receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stab-
lish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh
(James 5:7-8).
The coming of the Lord draweth nigh, it says here.
Since James wrote these words, almost 2,000 years have
passed, and the reality is that we are still here on earth
and not in the heavenly Jerusalem. Are you disappointed?
Or, even worse, are you maybe even annoyed with the
Lord? Are you annoyed that the return of the Lord has
taken so long? Do you belong to those even who say in
complete disillusionment, The Lord wont come for a
long time!
Thomas Lieth Is this not a question we are
all asking? We are in the
second decade of the new
millennium already, and the
Rapture still has not taken
place.

There was once a man in a certain un-
satisfactory situation, who was waiting for
the Messiah, that is, for His powerful ap-
pearance on the scene. And then, out of
sheer impatience, when nothing seemed
to be happening, he asked the Lord Jesus,
Art thou he that should come, or do we
look for another? (Matthew 11:3). John
the Baptist, for he was that man, thought
perhaps, Its time for the Lord Jesus to
come and set up His Messianic kingdom.
I do not want to go any further into this
occurrence, but rather speak of the reply
of the Lord Jesus, i.e. that which the Lord
said to this impatient and desperate man,
John, Blessed is he, whosoever shall not
be offended in me (verse 6). The Lord Je-
sus did not say to John the Baptist, I will
come and set up my kingdom at such and
such a time! No, he left John completely
in the dark concerning the further course
of spiritual history. But He told him what
really mattered. To put it in my own fee-
ble words, John, do not sin! Do not
doubt Me! Do not be offended, but perse-
vere! Be patient, in whatever situation
you find yourself, and let Me do every-
thing in My time. Trust Me and believe
Me!
In James 5 we read of patience, Be pa-
tient therefore, brethren, unto the coming
of the Lord. To nobody, not even the
apostles, the first Christians or the
Church fathers, did the Lord Jesus reveal
when the day of Jesus Christ will come.
What did the Lord Jesus say instead? But
of that day and hour knoweth no man
(Matthew 24:36). One thing is clear: the
Lord will return. The question as to
whether He will come is not open for dis-
cussion. The Bible is full of these
promises, and the verse in James 5 is only
one of many that speak of the fact of the
coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. In all the
letters of the New Testament, the return of
the Lord is mentioned. This is not a thing
of secondary importance, therefore, or an
insignificant event. On the contrary, it is a
central theme, and we do well to mention
it and to draw attention to it. The apostles
apparently awaited the coming of our
Lord at any time, even if they never main-
tained that the coming of the Lord would
take place during their lifetimes. This
makes them different from many end-
times fanatics who think they can put a
certain date to the return of the Lord.
How should we live, in view of this jus-
tified expectation of the return of the
Lord? What consequences does this have?
The consequence is certainly not, Lets
just spend our time waiting till the Lord
comes, but rather, Lets attempt to carry
out our commission by that time! Or, to
put it in the words of Titus 2:11-13, For
the grace of God that bringeth salvation
hath appeared to all men, teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly
lusts, we should live soberly, righteously,
and godly, in this present world; looking
for that blessed hope, and the glorious ap-
pearing of the great God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ. Have we understood this
correctly? Verse 13 gives us a vision of the
imminent meeting with our Lord, Look-
ing for that blessed hope, and the glorious
appearing of the great God and our Sav-
iour Jesus Christ, and the consequence
of this is, denying ungodliness and
worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this present
world (verse 12). We need to persevere
in all sobriety and righteousness, to live
godly lives and to pray. But the end of all
things is at hand: be ye therefore sober,
To nobody, not even the apostles, the first

and watch unto prayer (1 Peter 4:7).
Soberly means without speculation and
juggling around with dates or years. It
also means that we should not neglect
our original commission, in spite of our
expectation of the imminent meeting
with our Lord. We should live with this
imminent expectation as the apostles and
the first Christians did. The return of the
Lord is a reality. The Lord Jesus Himself
says to us, Behold, I come quickly in
Revelation 3:11, or as it says in the NIV,
I am coming soon. We could also say,
I am coming in a moment, in the twin-
kling of an eye, then when you least ex-
pect Me! This I am coming soon does
not mean I am coming tomorrow, but,
When I do comeand the Lord alone
knows whenthen I will come in a mo-
ment of time, quickly. There will be no
time to do anything, no time to say good-
bye, no time to justify ourselves or put
anything in orderno time! We should
speak of this, encourage each other with
this fact and admonish one another, and
above all we should live accordingly, in
all sobriety and godliness.
James speaks of patience. He gives us a
good example of this, the example of a
farmer, Be patient therefore, brethren,
unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the
husbandman waiteth for the precious
fruit of the earth, and hath long patience
for it, until he receive the early and latter
rain (James 5:7). What does this exam-
ple have to say to us? The farmer does
what he can. He sows, plants, ploughs,
harvests, etc. There are things, however,
that the farmer is unable to do; he is pow-
erless and dependent on the weather, for
instance, which is described here as the
early and latter rain. In this sphere, there
is nothing to do but trust and believe that
the Lord will do it, as it says in Psalm
37:5, Commit thy way unto the Lord;
trust also in him; and he shall bring it to
pass. And even if the harvest is latefor
whatever reasonthe farmer is not idle
and he does not let himself be discour-
aged, but he carries on with his work.
This example is a beautiful picture of
the spiritual harvest. We of the Church
are required to do what is in our power
and what we are able to do, and that
which we are responsible for in accor-
dance with our gifts and our strength.
This should all take place with patience,
with sobriety and godliness, and above all
with much prayer. As a church, we have a
commission and we must carry this out.
The commission is, to worship the Lord,
to preach the Word and to teach it, to ed-
ify and admonish one another, but also to
give financially to the Lords work, to sup-
port it, pray for it, make intercession and
give thanks, and to have fellowship. As a
church, we are required to witness to
When Will the Lord Come?
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming
of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for
the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience
for it, until he receive the early and latter rain

those outsidewe are, after all, Christs
ambassadors on earth. A church, and in
particular the elders and deacons, should
care for the weak, the sick, the widows,
orphans and needy, and accept those who
are weak and wavering in their faith. A
church is truly more than a Sunday gath-
ering. The commission which we have as
a church and church members does not
end at the end of the year, but has its va-
lidity until the Lord, in His grace, takes
the Church to be with Him, and that in
His time and not when we want Him to
come.
We are called to sow, to plough and
till. Whether it will bring fruit we may
leave to the Lord. The Lord God will
reach His goal with His Church, and
therefore also with you and I, but in His
own time! With this in mind, let us con-
tinue to speak of the Rapture and the
meeting with our Lord Jesus Christ,
completely relaxed and with inner joy,
without speculating or with a calculator
in our hand. And above all, do not be
disappointed; do not doubt the Lord if
He continues to tarry, and we are still on
earth at the beginning of next year. Re-
joice rather over every day that the Lord
gives us in which we can worship Him,
praise Him and glorify Him. The impor-
tant thing is that we are watchful and
prepared, that we do not worry but re-
joice, that we do not doubt Him but
trust Him. And let us in all that not lose
our vision for the people around us, for
that is a part of our task. May the Lord
bless you! (MR0111/426)
I will come back and take you to be with
me that you also may be where I am

more significant, committed lives as they embrace the truth

The first letter to Timothy is a so-called pastoral letter. In it the apostle Paul
shows how we ought to behave in the house of God, which is the church of the
living God, the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15). Read here the
first part of a series on this important letter to the Church.
By NORBERT LIETH
T
he two letters to Timothy, and the
one to Titus, are called pastoral let-
ters. Both men, Timothy and Titus,
were coworkers who had a special task in
the local church. The three letters have a
similar structure, a similar content (the
ministry of teaching, for instance, prayer,
the status of the woman, leadership). And
in all three letters, Paul gives directions
concerning the authority within the
church, how to confront wrong, un-
healthy developments, and how impor-
tant the sound doctrine of faith is. We can
take 1 Timothy 3:15 as a key verse for all
three letters, But if I tarry long, that thou
mayest know how thou oughtest to be-
have thyself in the house of God, which is
the church of the living God, the pillar
and ground of the truth.
The church is, thus:
the house of God,
the Church of the living God, and
the pillar and ground of the truth.
Paul wrote the first letter to Timothy,
who was in Ephesus, around 62-64 A.D.,
probably in the Greek province of that
time, Macedonia (1 Timothy 1:3). The
main theme is sound doctrine within the
church. This theme runs like a scarlet
thread throughout the whole letter. If we
notice how often the words doctrine,
teach or teacher occur, then we know
automatically upon what the Holy Spirit
puts the emphasis within the church (see
1 Timothy 1:3, 7, 10, 2:7, 3:2, 4:1, 6, 11,
13, 16, 5:17 and 6:1-3).
It is striking that Paul does not call to
evangelize within the church, but empha-
sizes the doctrine, how thou oughtest to
behave thyself in the house of God.
When we consider that this letter is a let-
ter to the church (a pastoral letter), full of
advice and directions for a young pastor,
and that it focuses on doctrine, then we
conclude what priority the Holy Spirit
30 M I D N I G H T C A L L
gives for the church. And we realize what
the Lord wants to see realized in our
lives.
The church service is not the place for
evangelistic preaching, but a place of
teaching for believers. Evangelistic
events should be held separately. There-
fore leaving the principles of the doc-
trine of Christ, let us go on unto
perfection; not laying again the founda-
tion of repentance from dead works, and
of faith toward God (Hebrews 6:1). The
more the church is taught about doc-
trine, the better the members will be mo-
tivated and equipped in their daily lives
to reach their neighbors with the Gospel.
The apostle evangelized in syna-
gogues, houses and public places. When
a church had been founded, however,
they all concentrated on teaching it, and
through the church members, others
came to believe. If we want people to
come to believe in Jesus Christ, we must
attach importance to instructing the
church in Biblical doctrine. And they
continued stedfastly in the apostles
doctrine and fellowship, and in break-
ing of bread, and in prayers (Acts
2:42, cf. also 11:26 Antioch, 18:11
Corinth, and 20:31 Ephesus).
When Paul evangelized, he went
into the synagogue, and spake
boldly for the space of three months,
disputing and persuading the things
concerning the kingdom of God (Acts
19:8). Concerning the doctrine in the
Church, we then read, But when
divers were hardened, and believed not,
but spake evil of that way before the
multitude, he departed from them, and
separated the disciples, disputing daily
in the school of one Tyrannus. And this
continued by the space of two years; so
that all they which dwelt in Asia heard
the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews
and Greeks (verses 9-10).
In many churches, the services are
misused Sunday for Sunday to evan-
gelize outsiders. This is a fatal error,
which in the long run brings less fruit
than the teaching for the church. Gen-
erally, people are converted through in-
dividual contact with believers, and if
these are well instructed, they can
achieve all the more. For when for the
time ye ought to be teachers, ye have
need that one teach you again which be
the first principles of the oracles of
God; and are become such as have need
of milk, and not of strong meat. For
every one (here, the individual is spo-
ken of) that useth milk is unskilful in
the word of righteousness: for he is a
babe. But strong meat belongeth to
them that are of full age, even those

who by reason of use have their senses

our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ,

Verse 1 is a clear reference to the unity
of God with the Son (verse 17 also draws
attention to this). God is called Savior.
He referred to Himself in this way even
in the Old Testament, in Isaiah 43:3,
For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy
One of Israel, thy Saviour. In 2 Timothy
1:10 and Titus 1:4, the same word is
used for Jesus. Jesus Himself stressed
this unity toward the Jews (John 10:30).
Verse 2 shows the close connection of
Paul to Timothy. Timothy is greeted by
Paul as his own son in the faith. This
makes it clear that Timothy was con-
verted through the ministry of Paul.
There are other descriptions of Timothy:
A minister to Paul (Acts 19:22),
Pauls workfellow (Romans 16:21),
Pauls beloved son, and faithful in
the Lord (1 Corinthians 4:17),
A worker of the work of the Lord
(1 Corinthians 16:10),
Brother (2 Corinthians 1:1, Colos-
sians 1:1 and Philemon 1),
Preacher (2 Corinthians 1:19),
Servant of Jesus Christ (Philippians
1:1),
Minister of God (1 Thessalonians
3:2),
Pauls son (1 Timothy 1:18).
Moreover, Paul describes him as a spe-
cial fellow-worker in Philippians 2:19-
22, But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send
Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also
may be of good comfort, when I know
your state. For I have no man likeminded,
who will naturally care for your state. For
all seek their own, not the things which
are Jesus Christs. But ye know the proof
of him, that, as a son with the father, he
hath served with me in the gospel.
Timothy had many honorable de-
scriptions, but one title was lacking; he
is never called an apostle. On the con-
trary, he is always clearly distinguished
from them (cf. 2 Corinthians 1:1 and
Colossians 1:1). This difference shows
that the apostolic office was unique and
not transferable. If it had been transfer-
able, what would have been more nat-
ural than for Paul to pass it on to his
closest fellow-workers, such as Timo-
thy, Titus, Barnabas, Mark or Silas?

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which
be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not
of strong meat. For every one (here, the individual is spoken of) that useth milk is unskilful
in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of
full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and
evil (Hebrew 5:12-14).

n the Old Testament, salvation is prophesied,
in the well-known verse Genesis 3:15, for in-
stance. In the Gospels, salvation is accom-
plished. We read literally in John 19:30, It is
finished! In the book of Acts, salvation is pro-
claimed, Be it known unto you therefore, men
and brethren, that through this man is preached
unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by him all
that believe are justified from all things, from
which ye could not be justified by the law of
Moses (Acts 13:38-39). In the epistles (from Ro-
mans to Jude), salvation is explained. For in-
stance, in Romans 8:23 Paul says, Even we
ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the
adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. In
the book of Revelation, salvation is completed,
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is
come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of
our God, and the power of his Christ (Revelation
12:10).
The preaching in the book of Acts: It is striking that in
the book of Acts, in fulfillment of Luke 24:47, the
forgiveness of sins is proclaimed, but it never says
that healing from physical ailments is connected
with this.
Why at the preaching of the Gospeleven in
the book of Actsare the listeners only offered for-
giveness of sins and never healing from sicknesses?
Would not Peter have had to say in the house of
Cornelius, To him give all the prophets witness,
that through his name whosoever believeth in him
We are hearing more and more that as evangelists or pastors we are neglect-
ing the ministry of healing. Healing supposedly belongs to the proclamation
of the Gospel. Only then does one have a full Gospel! But is this really
what the NewTestament teaches?

shall receive remission of sins, and then
add, and healing from his sicknesses?
It was Peter who was previously sent
by Jesus with an express command to
heal (Matthew 10:8). Could the apostles
have forgotten to mention such an im-
portant part of His commission? But they
fulfilled the commission of Jesus, And
he said unto them, Thus it is written, and
thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to
rise from the dead the third day: and that
repentance and remission of sins should
be preached in his name among all na-
tions, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are
witnesses of these things (Luke 24:46-48). This
was their message. Compare also Acts 2:38, 11:18,
13:38-39, 15:11, 17:30-31 & 26:18. The central
point is forgiveness of sins. Healing does take
place, especially in this book of the Bible, some-
times quite spectacularly even, but in no preaching
that we find in the book of Acts is this an addi-
tional part of salvation.
But, say many people in charismatic circles, we
must heal the sick, because God is ultimately the
same in our day. As proof of this, Matthew 10:8 and
Luke 10:9 are quoted. There, we do indeed find
commands to heal the sick. But as the dispensa-
tional way of thinking is gradually disappearing in
our time, many people understand this wrongly,
even with a certain amount of success.
It is true that God is the same (Malachi 3:6), but
God acts quite differently on different occasions
(Hebrews 1:1-2). A careful Bible reader will usually
see that the Church of Jesus Christ was only born
at Pentecost, and that the New Testament began at
Calvary (Luke 22:20). What the apostles experi-
enced before, during the earthly life of our Lord,
was the work among the people of Israel. The
Church, i.e. the new covenant, did not exist at that
time. Let us consider Matthew 10, where the Mas-
ter sends out the twelve disciples. He said ex-
pressly, Go not into the way of the Gentilesbut
go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel
(verses 5-6). In verse 8 comes the command, Heal
the sick, cleanse the lepers. And Mark 6:12-13
belongs in the same category, where it says, And
they went out, and preached that men should re-
pent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed
with oil many that were sick, and healed them. No
imperative is used here, however, but rather the
narrative form. Doubtless, this refers to the time
before the Church, before the new covenant.
As we have already seen, however, in the Acts of
the Apostles where we find the beginning of the
Church, the focal point of the proclamation is now
the forgiveness of sins. A unique and incredible
thing had now taken place. The Lamb of God, who
bore the sins of the world, paid the price for all
transgressions with His blood. God makes the sin-
ner just (Romans 4:5); this was now the central
theme of the disciples of Jesus. This was their full
Gospel.

The Great Commission: In charismatic circles, the
missionary command of our Lord is often referred
to; preferably, however, that in Mark 16. Luke
mentions the central theme, forgiveness of sins,
which must be proclaimed in the name of Jesus,
and that is just what the apostles did (Luke 24:46-
48). John speaks of the sending and also puts the
emphasis on the forgiveness of sins (John 20:21-
23).
Some Bible interpreters see in Matthew 28:19-20
also a command to heal. John Wimber declared
that the fulfilling of Matthew 28 is Matthew 10:8.
We have already seen, however, that this clearly
refers to Israel and not to the era of the Church.
The nations are only mentioned in verse 19 of
chapter 28, and there we find the well-known
verses about making disciples, baptizing and
teaching. Also, should not, if the healing of the
sick is taken literally, the raising of the dead also be
the prerogative of the preacher? In the same way,
the wallet, suitcase, and change of clothing would
also have to remain at home (Matthew 10:9-10).
We see, however, a different lifestyle, to put it
mildly, especially by preachers of a full or pros-
perity Gospel. An honest exegesis does not allow
us to take one point literally for the Church, to em-
phasize it, and to avoid the other statements.
It is similar with Mark 16:17-18a Bible text
which many cults and false teachers have quoted
(Montanists, Gnostics, Mormons, Christian Scien-
tists, New Apostolic, modern Gnostics, etc.) Usu-
ally, speaking in tongues, exorcism and the laying
of hands on the sick are taken from the list in
verses 17-18. But then drinking poison and pick-
ing up snakes would also have to belong to the
normal accompanying circumstances of such
power preaching. This is not the norm, however,
but the extraordinary. We should also note that in
these verses, no imperative is used but the indica-
tive form, quite apart from the fact that this is a
controversial text, as it does not exist in the oldest
manuscripts that we have. Unfortunately, however,
it has often been a characteristic of cults and false
doctrines, to exaggerate controversial Bible texts to
form a doctrine.
Israel awaited the coming of the kingdom of
God with the Messiah (Matthew 4:17). Had the
people not rejected their Messiah, then the mes-
sianic kingdom of peace would surely have been
set up then. This included the healing from physi-
cal ailments. The prophet Isaiah explains how in
that dispensation a person who dies at one hun-
dred years old will be called a child (Isaiah 65:20).
There was also a pre-fulfillment when Jesus walked
upon the earth and the Church did not exist, when
Israel was confronted with the offer of the mes-
sianic kingdom and the Lord healed the sick
(Matthew 8:16-17). The term church only ap-
pears twice in all four Gospels, namely in Matthew
16:18 and 18:17, and nowhere in the Gospels of
Mark, Luke or John. But Israel rejected their Re-
deemer, and salvation went to the nations.
In this age of the Church, there is no command
to heal. Once again, however, I would like to em-
phasize that God can still give healing here and
there, particularly in pioneer evangelism situa-
tions.
The explanation in the epistles: For us as the
Church of Jesus Christ, there is no command to
heal in the epistles, but there are directions con-
tained in James 5:14ff. to pray for one another in
the case of sickness. Here, we should have much
more courage and faith. It is often reported how
in following this biblical command, God heals
Christians or there is relief or improvement of
their condition. This is particularly the case
when they are also prepared to confess their sins
(verse 16). But now, in this age, we still groan
and are burdened and long for our mortality to
be swallowed up by life (2 Corinthians 5:4).
The mystery of the Church was revealed in the
first place by the Apostle Paul, and he shows us
in his epistles how this miracle of the body of

Christ and the age of grace in the Old Testament
was not known, or only partially (Ephesians 3:4-
6, and Colossians 1:26-27). Jesus Himself still
lived in the dispensation of the old covenant.
That is why we find in the Gospels almost no
mention of the Church. Therefore, it is exegeti-
cally not sustainable to take orders for the age of
grace out of the Old Testament or the Gospels,
unless the commandments there are taken up in
the epistles and confirmed. The basic doctrines
for the Church are contained in the epistles of
the apostles.
In Romans 8:23, Paul clearly explains to us
that our bodies are not yet redeemed. This is why
we age, can become sick, and sooner or later we
all have to die, if we do not experience the return
of the Lord.
Particularly the first epistle of John shows the
reason for the coming of our Lord. It warns of de-
ception and commands us to examine the
spirits. This letter also shows us the biblical
criteria for a believer. John opposes the
Gnostic influence, for the Gnostics propa-
gated the command to heal. Here, where
John mentions the reason for Jesus coming
(in 1 John 3:5 & 8, etc.), this is always in
connection with sin. Not once does it say
that Jesus appeared to heal the sick.
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but
that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:10).
This would be a peculiar omission if it
should be taken for granted that the
Church must heal the sick.
Thus, we can only agree with the words
of Dr. Rolf Hille (former chairman of the
German Evangelical Alliance), when he
said that for Christians the matter of guilt is
explained by the fact that Jesus Christ for-
gives sins, but the question of happiness
and well-being in our earthly lives remains
open. The charismatic movement is for him
in this sense the most tragic movement in the his-
tory of the Church. It is based on an erroneous in-
terpretation of Scripture, as it looks upon healing
as the norm and sickness as the exception. But the
desire for the restoration of Paradise will not be
fulfilled in this life, however. (MR0411/431)

The future of the European common cur-
rency, as has become abundantly clear, is
far from certain. Chancellor Angela Merkels gov-
ernment is struggling to find a majority within her
government coalition for a crucial vote on reforms
to the euro backstop. Italy has been hesitant in
confronting massive state debt. Greek reforms
have come more slowly than promised. And in-
vestors are nervous.
Despite the uncertainty, however, Switzerland
pegged its currency to the euro, announcing that
the exchange rate was not to fall below 1.20
Swiss francs per euro. The current massive
overvaluation of the Swiss franc poses an acute
threat to the Swiss economy and carries the risk
of a deflationary development, the Swiss Na-
tional Bank said in an announcement. The bank
said it was prepared to buy foreign currency in
unlimited quantities in order to maintain a
cheaper franc.
The country had little choice. The massive in-
crease in the value of the franc this yearits
value relative to the euro had increased by 20
percent since Januaryhad begun to slow the
economy. In the second quarter of this year, the
Swiss economy, heavily reliant as it is on exports,
grew by a mere 0.4 percent. The francs rise in
value is a direct result of loss of confidence in the
euro and the dollar in recent months.

Switzerland is not a member of the Euro-
pean Union, but virtually all laws issued
from Brussels are automatically accepted in
Switzerland. This tiny, super-rich country in
the heart of Europe could not function with-
out full cooperation with the EU. Swiss po-
litical and economic philosophy is based on
the prevalent social/capitalist system.
This peaceful, neutral country, with 7.6
million in population, is the envy of the
world. In particular, to the European Union,
which desperately tries to maintain unity be-
tween its 27 member nations. But Switzer-
land is well experienced in operating a
highly sophisticated society among the vari-
ous ethnic groups in the country. The nation
functions using four official languages: Ger-
man 63%; French 20%; Italian 7%; and
Rumantsch 0.5%. Actually, Switzerland
practices what the European Union
preaches, United in Diversity.
The governments decision to peg the
Swiss franc to the euro will protect the cur-
rency against the risk of deflationary devel-
opment, and will doubtless gain from the
rise of the euro in coming years.
What this development shows is that
even a super-rich and neutral country like
Switzerland cannot operate independently
indefinitely. Obviously, this will strengthen
the European Union and give hope for a
dozen or so countries to officially present
their application for
membership in the
Union. 4178

What have been regularly referred to as
emerging economies have seen their growth
outstrip that of the main industrialized nations in
recent years. China, the most successful of the
group, maintains reserves worth some $3 trillion.
The EUhas in multiple reports and plans of its
own expressed how only through restructuring
and austerity can the bloc hope to compete with
China. As Brussels austerity strategy wobbles in
the face of faltering growth and soaring unem-
ployment, Europe may have to submit to the ulti-
mate indignity of a rescue from the former
subjects of its colonialism.
-euobserver.com, 14 September 2011
Slowly, but surely, we are witnessing the re-
versal of roles: the third world is coming to
the rescue of the super-rich European Union.
United States capitalism has been humiliated
in recent years by the super successful com-
munist China. European socialists, thinking
themselves safe, are now experiencing their
foundation wobbling. Many ask, what is this
all about? Answer: the restructuring of the
new world society. The so-called emerging
nations, previously identified as third
world, will and must be fully integrated into
the European world (West).
While the Brics nations have a long
way to catch up, the process toward eco-
nomic and financial equality is most cer-
tainly in full swing.
Where will it lead? To a more solidified
and united world. That in turn will cause all
nations the world over to concentrate their
rebellion against God, the Creator of heaven
and earth. Revelation 19:19 reports, And
I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth,
and their armies, gathered together to make
war against him that sat on the horse, and
against his army. It stands to reason that unity
must be established in order to openly and
intentionally rebel
against heavenly
powers. 4190

The unit by Resomation Ltd is billed as a
green alternative to cremation and works by
dissolving the body in heated alkaline water.
The facility has been installed at the Ander-
son-McQueen funeral home in St. Petersburg,
and will be used for the first time in the coming
weeks. It is hoped other units will follow in the
US, Canada and Europe.
The makers claim the process produces a third
less greenhouse gas than cremation, uses a sev-
enth of the energy, and allows for the complete sep-
aration of dental amalgamfor safe disposal.
Mercury from amalgam vaporized in crema-
tion is blamed for up to 16% of UK airborne mer-
cury emissions, and many UK crematoria are
currently fitting mercury filtration systems to
meet reduced emission targets.
The system works by submerging the body in a
solution of water and potassium hydroxide which is
pressurized to 10 atmospheres and heated to 180C
for between two-and-a-half and three hours.
Body tissue is dissolved and the liquid poured
into the municipal water system. Company
founder Sandy Sullivan, a biochemist by train-
ing, says tests have proven the effluent is sterile
and contains no DNA, and poses no environ-
mental risk.
The bones are then removed from the unit and
processed in a cremulator, the same machine
that is used to crush bone fragments following
cremation into ash. Metals including mercury and
artificial joints and implants are safely recovered.
The machine is patented in Europe with
patents pending in other countries.
Mr. Sullivan, whose company is now majority
owned by Cooperative Funeralcare, claims his ma-
chine will provide a more efficient and quicker
process. He also believes the equipment can rival
cremation for cost, particularly given the expense of
fitting mercury abatement systems.
He is now pressing for legislative changes in the
UK to make alkaline hydrolysis a reality in Britain.
Another green alternative to cremation is in
the pipeline. Susanne Wiigh-Masak, a Swedish
biologist, has for a decade proposed a technol-
ogy she calls Promession.
The process involves a fully automated and
patented machine. Coffins are fed in one end,
and the body removed from the coffin within the
unit and then treated with liquid nitrogen.
Ms. Wiigh-Masak is now confident commer-
cial operations will begin soon, after the
Swedish government promised to introduce new
legislation that would allow individuals to use a
burial tax paid by all Swedes not just for cre-
mation and burial, but also for Promession.
Designs are complete, manufacturers ap-
pointed, and four potential sites in Sweden have
been earmarked for facilities.

Instructions regarding the disposal of the body of
a saint are clearly given in Scripture. Abraham, the
father of all believers, was buried. Furthermore,
we read, So David slept with his fathers, and was
buried in the city of David (1 Kings 2:10); And
his disciples came, and took up the body, and
buried it, and went and told Jesus (Matthew
14:12); She hath done what she could: she is
come aforehand to anoint my body to the bury-
ing (Mark 14:8); And when Joseph had taken
the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And
laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn
out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the
door of the sepulchre, and departed (Matthew
27:59-60); And devout men
carried Stephen to his burial, and
made great lamentation over
him (Acts 8:2). These and many
other Scriptures should suffice as
proper instruction for burial.

Rector of the Paris Russian Conserva-

Sheremetev backed the idea of recognizing an
international status of the Russian language in
the EU. I fully join this proposal, he said in an
interview with Itar-Tass. This will help to de-
velop the Pan-European cultural and economic
space. He noted that the number of Russian-
language speakers in the world tops 300 million
people, including in EU countriesover six mil-
lion.
The conference, attended by 177 representa-
tives from various spheres of public life from the
capital and leading French regions, put forth the
task of the broadest possible studies of the
Russian language in the country. For this pur-
pose, plans are to organize a symposium on
methods of its teaching in the French medium.
Russian Ambassador in Paris Alexander
Orlov noted that the next year would be the Year
of the Russian Language in France. He noted
that propagation of the native tongue and cul-
ture is a task, uniting all waves of the Russian
emigration.
The forum requested the French Supreme
Council of Audio-Visual Information to allocate
frequencies in the UHF band to broadcast in
Russian. Such radio station addresses its pro-
grams to the Russian-speaking audiences in
Francerepresentatives of Russian, Georgian,
Ukrainian, Moldovan, Armenian and Baltic com-
munities.
According to the authors of the address, it
was prompted not only by common interests,
but also by the desire to present the European
continent in France in all its multiformity in the
epoch of globalization. Radio programs will in-
clude political, economic and especially cultural
news of the French Republic, the Russian Fed-
eration and other European countries.
A ranking official of the Russian Foreign Min-
istry, Alexander Chepurin, told Itar-Tass that
proposals, made at the forum in Paris will be
examined at the International Conference on the
status of the Russian language.
Participants in the Russian Forum elected
the Coordination Council, consisting of 17 peo-
ple. In the opinion of deputy head of the
Rossotrudnichestvo organization Georgy Mu-
radov, it is called upon to be a link between the
associations themselves as well as Russian
structures, responsible for contacts with compa-
triots.
The Paris Russian Forum has become his-
torys first conference of representatives of all
organizations of the Russian diaspora in France.
The forum noted that the post-revolutionary emi-

up to this time.

country in the most important category.
Recognizing Russian as an official Eu-

has learned from history. While European
colonial nations such as the US, Brazil, and
approximately 40 more have successfully
rebuilt the tower of Babel by insisting on
one language, Europeans saw the impossi-
bility of agreeing on one language; thus,
multiplicity was born as another important
foundation stone of the European Union,
now the model for world unity.
The one language world ended at the
building of the tower of Babel, And the
LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and
they have all one language; and this they be-
gin to do: and now nothing will be restrained
from them, which they have imagined to do
(Genesis 11:6). Nevertheless, the world will
and is uniting in spite of language barriers,
and that unity is built on global finance; in
other words, money.

Critics complain the policies are still not joined
up, however, and say the risk is that Saudi farmers
will turn to even thirstier cash crops.
Many farmers who used to grow wheat start
growing fodder (animal feed) instead that gener-
ates quick cash. But unfortunately fodders use
of water is four times more than for wheat, said
Abdulaziz Rabih al-Harbi, professor at the King
Saud University and a member of the agriculture
committee at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce
and Industry.
The lack of water also poses a major chal-
lenge to the kingdoms hopes to develop its min-
ing sector to diversify its economy given the
water-intensive nature of the industry.
Gold is there but we dont have water, Mo-
hammed Hany al-Dabbagh, vice president of pre-
cious metals and exploration at state-controlled
minerals firm Saudi Arabian Mining Co said.
Water is as precious as gold.
With average annual rainfall around 100 mm (4
inches), Saudis ancient underground aquifers are
its lifeblood.
But just as peak oil theorists believe the worlds
conventional oil supplies are at or near their peak,
proponents of the peak water view have said the
resource has been irreversibly drained.
Analysts and industry leaders say the authori-
ties need to pass on more of the costs to the end-
user to curb demand and reduce waste, an
argument that holds true for power and fuel but
which requires very careful handling in the case of
water.
Saudi Arabia realized they should start think-
ing about using their water in a more efficient
way, said Peter Brabeck, chairman of Nestle, one
of the worlds largest food companies and a lead-
ing campaigner to avert a world water crisis.
They understand water has more value than
oil in the long term, he said.
-jpost.com, 13 September 2011
Here we have another complex issue that
requires global cooperation. What a state-
ment, Gold is there but we dont have wa-
ter.
Quite naturally, Saudi Arabia will have
to readjust its agriculture policy by depend-
ing more on other countries for imports.
In spite of utilizing the most technologi-
cally advanced systemin the agriculture indus-
try, nothing can replace the rain which comes
from above. Semi-desert farming requires pre-
cious water, which, in the case of Saudi Arabia,
is not available in unlimited supply. Doubtless,
here is where Israel could be a beneficial part-
ner; the country is leading the world in produc-
ing the most with the least amount of water.
Here we see again the progress toward a
closer united world. While the industrial
nations are totally dependent upon oil-rich
countries such as Saudi Arabia, they in turn
will be dependent
more than ever
on food producing
countries. 4191

sive unity of the nations,

News of the suspension in eradication
work prompted surprise and concern
from US officials, whose country has tried for
years to limit coca production in Peru as part of
a broader war on drugs in the region.
The United Nations says Peru is now the
worlds leading coca grower and could surpass
Colombia as the top cocaine producer.
Coca has been commonly used in Peru and
other Andean nations for centuries and plays an
important role in traditional indigenous culture.
Many chew coca leaves or consume the plant in
other ways, such as coca tea.
It is considered effective as a treatment for al-
titude sickness and is often used in medicine
and in traditional religious ceremonies.
But supporters of eradication say most of the
coca crop is cultivated for the cocaine industry.
We are working on how to redirect efforts,
said Oscar Valdes, the Peruvian interior minis-
ter.
The public must understand that the reduc-
tion of illicit crops will continue, as the president
has said, and there will be a frontal fight against
drug trafficking, Valdes said.
Richard Soberon, head of the anti-drugs pro-
gram for Peruvian President Ollanta Humalas
government, said there was an indefinite
pause in the eradication program in the Alto
Huallaga region northeast of Lima to evaluate
the effort.
In every country, in Afghanistan, in Colom-
bia, in Bolivia, in Mexico, it is normal to have
these pauses to do the necessary evaluation of
what has happened, to correct mistakes, he
said.
(continued next page)

valley is
Peru's second
largest coca
producing
region.

40 M I D N I G H T C A L L
He added that 12 years of eradication efforts had
had little impact on the production of coca in Peru.
The 2011 UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UN-
ODC) report says Peru had 61,200 hectares
(150,000 acres) of coca under cultivation in 2010,
two percent more than in the previous year.
Peruvian officials estimated that the amount
of cocaine produced in the country in 2010 was
330 tons, close to the estimated 350 tons pro-
duced by Colombia.
The suspension of the eradication program
coincides with Humalas reshuffling of the coun-
trys drug policy team following his election.
Humala, a former army officer elected on a
leftist agenda, has said he would work closely
with the US to fight cocaine production. He has
also said he expected countries that buy illegal
cocaine to contribute to the effort.
He drew criticism earlier for appointing
Soberon to head Perus anti-drug agency.
Soberon, a lawyer, worked for a legislator
from the presidents political party who has
close links to coca growers.
Fernando Rospigliosi, the former minister of inte-
rior, said the indefinite suspension sent a bad signal.
It says to the coca producers and guerrillas,
Go ahead, plant your coca, nothing will hap-
pen, he said.
-english.aljazeera.net, 18 August 2011
The so-called war on drugs seems to be
as ineffective as the much proclaimed war
on terror. One of the most effective loop-
holes for drug growers and traffickers is the
disunity among the nations.
The apparent largest customer of illegal
drugs is the United States, with some of
the strictest anti-drug laws on the books.
Some reports estimate that about 50 per-
cent of the prison population in the United
States is directly or indirectly drug-re-
lated. Presently, the US operates the
worlds largest prison system.
This issue again shows that the world will
have to cooperate even more in the coming
days. After all, Revelation 13:16-17 has yet
to be fulfilled, And he causeth all, both
small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,
to receive a mark in their right hand, or in
their foreheads: And that no man might buy
or sell, save he that
had the mark, or the
name of the beast, or
the number of his
name. 4161

will invest about 200 billion yen ($2.6 billion) in the
merged unit, taking a 70 percent stake. Sony,
Toshiba and Hitachi will each take a 10 percent

They aim to complete the merger by the spring

cause falling panel prices and advances in tech-

producers.
The three firms together controlled 21.5 percent

Although not much positive news comes from
Japan lately, the country is still one of the most
powerful economies in the world. On the cur-
rency market, the yen has gained about 40 per-
cent against the US dollar in the last five years.
In spite of its high cost labor force, Japan still
showed a 40 billion trade balance surplus for
August 2011. Japans technology leadership in
a number of areas, such as computers and cam-
eras, as well as the much praised automobile
industry, remains strong. Nevertheless, as the
article shows, uniting operations and merging
assets are the only way to effectively compete
on the global market. This tendency is not lim-
ited to Japan, but is worldwide. Change and
unite, or perish seems to be the applicable slo-
gan in the business world.

CHI NA/ US A
TheEndof Global
Dominancefor theUS?
If the broadpost-WorldWar II
prosperity that has enduredfor
six decades comes toanend,
boththe UnitedStates andEu-
rope will be responsible.
With rare exceptions, politics has become
a discredited profession throughout the
West. Tomorrow is always treated as more impor-
tant than next week, and next week prevails over
next year, with no one seeking to secure the long-
term future. Now the West is paying the price.
The United States current fiscal problems are
rooted in a long period of unfunded spending.
Bushs wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the
manner in which he conducted the global war
on terror made matters much worse, contribut-
ing to a totally unsustainable situation. Indeed,
Obama inherited an almost impossible legacy.
In the weeks since the debt ceiling agree-
ment, it has become increasingly clear that good
government might be impossible in the US. The
coming months of campaigning for the US presi-
dency will be spent in petty brawling over what
should be cut. The example of recent weeks
gives us no cause for optimism that US legisla-
tors will rise above partisan politics and ask
themselves what is best for America.
Most importantly, Chinas call for the introduction
of a new reserve currency stems fromits frustration
with the failure of major governmentswhether in
the US or Europeto govern their economic affairs
with realism and good sense. China recognizes
that the US is in great difficulty (indeed, it recog-
nizes this more clearly than the US itself), and that,
given the poisonous political atmosphere prevailing
in Washington, there will be no easy return to good
government, economic stability, and strong growth.
US leadership in world affairs began to
weaken with the unilateralism of Bush, and to-
days economic problems are reinforcing this
tendency. To reverse the United States decline,
Obama needs bipartisan support for his (quite
mainstream) policies, but so far the US Con-
gress has shown no stomach for a principled ap-
proach to its legislative duties.
If Germanys half-hearted efforts to stabilize
Europe somehow turn out to be successful, the
US position will be further eroded, and central
banks around the world will begin to regard the
euro once again as a reliable alternative to the
dollar as a reserve currency. The alternative, as
China has suggested, would be to develop a
new reserve currency.
If this forces the United States back towards
what the international-relations scholar Joseph
Nye calls soft power and multilateral diplo-
macy, it may well be a good thing. But such ap-
proaches are anathema to the US Republican
Party, and to its Tea Party faction in particular,
and they might unnerve the many Asians who
are nervous at Chinas growing military might.
The counter-argumentthat any sell-off or
failure by China to continue to buy US govern-
ment securities would hurt China as much as the
USis not valid. As each year passes, Chinas
markets expand worldwide, and its domestic
market comes to represent a greater percentage
of its own GDP. As a result, China will not need a
strong dollar in the long term. Americans need to
get their economic house in order before China
loses its incentive to support the dollar.
-english.aljazeera.net, 4 September 2011
The excerpt from the above article is authored
by former Prime Minister of Australia, Mal-
colm Fraser. Doubtless, his analysis is based
on the fact that China is Australias largest
economic partner; 21.8 percent of Australian
exports go to China, while 17.9 percent of
Australian imports come from China. Chinas
communist-capitalism needs Australias nat-
ural resources, and China is willing to pay.
America, on the other hand, makes up
only 6.8 percent of Chinas imports, while
importing 19.3 percent of Chinas ex-
ports. Furthermore, the trade balance
for the last 12 months, according to
The Economist, reads 565.5 billion
dollars in the red. Here, the real prob-
lem is revealed, and not mentioned in
the political agenda of the prevailing parties.
The issue is not jobs, but rather products. Pro-
ducing goods for the world market competi-
tively by quality craftsman is something that
seems to be totally overlooked. What will be
the result? Continuous decline of dominance
in an ever faster growing world economy.
Malcolm Fraser emphasizes the politi-
cal/economic climax of the US with the
words, US leadership in world affairs began
to weaken with the unilateralism of former
President Bush. Similar to Britain, the Do
it alone policy will run into a dead end.
Why are we publishing such negative
news? The reason is simple; to show that
only those nations which are flexible will
continue to climb the ladder of success and
dominance, regardless of their history or pre-
sent government. After all, money rules the
world, and those who are broke will be ruled.
While the United States has tremendous
potential, being a giant among the industrial
nations, the combination of isolationism and
unilateralism is slowly but surely having its
effect.
If we ask why, then we must point to Holy
Scripture, where we read that the worlds last
power structure, dominated by 10 demonic
kings, will be united, And the ten horns which
thou sawest are ten kings, which have received
no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings
one hour with the beast. These have one mind,
and shall give their
power and strength unto
the beast (Revelation
17:12-13). 4182

Pleading the Blood
Dear Arno Froese,
Thank God for all the Light of God
you have and wonderful Midnight Call
magazine etc. I usually agree with
you, but I happened to see January
2011, and oh no! You are the last per-
son I ever would have thought write
such. I wish I could see what was
written before you wrote on page 45,
Pleading the Blood. J. Smith, NY
wrote, I just finished listening to the
CD The Deliverer Part 4. Thank
you for telling me that pleading the
blood of Jesus is wrong. (My Lord,
my God, in Jesus name, let there be
Light.) How could you say this?
When I see the blood, I will pass over
you. The life of the flesh is the blood,
and I have given it you on the altar
(cross) to make atonement for your
sins. It is the blood that makes atone-
ment for the soul (Leviticus 17:11,
Genesis 9:6, Hebrews 2:14, Revelation
21 & 22). We all know when Adam
sinned, all have sinned, in the
bloodstream.
The soul that sinneth shall die.
From Genesis through Revelation, the
Blood of the Lamb of God, Christ Je-
sus, our only Victory.
Jesus, my Creator, Savior, Lord
God. The Lamb of God, Behold, the
Lamb of God (John 1:29).
We are redeemed with His precious
blood (1 Peter 1:18-19, Revelation
1:5-6, Isaiah 4:4, Ezekiel 16:9). For
this is my blood of the New Testament
which is shed for many for the remis-
sion of sins (Matthew 26:28). By his
own blood he entered in once into the
holy place, having obtained eternal re-
demption for us (Hebrews 9:12).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
I was raised a Catholic, but later in life, when
I started to read the Bible, I concluded that not all
I believed was based on the Bible. Sunday
worship is my first concern since Sunday is the
first day of the week, but the Sabbath is the
seventh day. I am quite confused, because all
different denominations are not fully biblical.
-J. DRNEC, CO
Answer: Pleading the blood means
addressing the blood. This practice
seems to separate the Lord Jesus
Christ and His blood. Of course, the
blood of Jesus is decisive for re-
demption, but note, it is His blood.
The reason I question this state-
ment is because its not found in
Holy Scripture. We are not to come
to His blood: we are to come to Him
who shed His blood. Jesus, and He
alone, is the center of our pleading,
our prayer and our worship. Without
His dyingpouring out His life in His
bloodHis death and subsequent
resurrection and ascension, includ-
ing His return, Jesus would not have
accomplished His work of redemp-
tion. If any of these items were miss-
ing, it would be invalid. The center is,
and always must be Jesus. Paul
states in 1 Corinthians 2:2: For I de-
termined not to know any thing
among you, save Jesus Christ, and
him crucified.
Judgment Seat Reward
Dear Brother Froese,
Blessings in his holy Name!
Because of my current circum-
stances, my capacity for min-
istry is somewhat limited. But
I would appreciate your biblical
insight concerning my heart at-
titude toward what Id like to
accomplish for my Lord Jesus if
I had the opportunity. Namely,
I think in my heart on certain
things that Id like to do to
bring Him the honor and glory
due His holy Name. My ques-
tion is, will my thoughts and
heart attitude be rewarded at
the judgment seat? Or will
I only receive rewards for the
things that I have actually done
through His Spirits power?
-J. Conti, CT
Answer: When my thoughts and
heart attitude are ruled by His Spirit,
it will bring forth fruit. Galatians
5:22-23 reads: But the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffer-
ing, gentleness, goodness, faith.
Meekness, temperance: against such
there is no law. Such servants are
described in the next two verses:
And they that are Christs have cru-
cified the flesh with the affections
and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us
also walk in the Spirit.
Thoughts and attitudes, when
guided by His Spirit, always lead to
total self-abandonment. That will be
rewarded.
Location of Hell
Dear Midnight Call,
I have always been of the opin-
ion that earth will become the
lake of fire. We know the earth
abideth forever (Ecclesiastes
1:4), and the earth should not be
removed forever (Psalm 104:5).
So the earth must be eternal. In 2
Peter 3:10-12, we see the wood,
hay, and stubble of earth being
burned up, but the elements
melting (just as in the Christian
life). The wood, hay and stubble
are burned, but the gold, silver
and precious stones (elements)
come through the fire. All else
will be destroyed because it has
been touched by sin. Now if the
earth abideth forever, then the
melted elements must combine
with the magma and the earth be-
comes the lake of fire. Then the
devil, the false prophet, death and
hell are cast into the lake forever.
A new heaven and new earth that
has never been touched by sin,
will be the eternal home of those
saved by the blood of our Lord
Christ.
The earth can abide forever.
The pure in heart will live in a
new heaven or earth that has

never been touched by sin. There
will be a separation (great gulf)
between the two, and so goes
eternity. Or am I reading too
much into these verses?
-G. Young, PA
Answer: Thank you for the additional
thoughts on the matter of the location
of hell.
Scholars differ about the future of
the earth, whether renovated, re-
newed, restored, or totally replaced.
Reading the first verse of Revelation
21, we are confronted with something
unearthly, a new heaven and a new
earth. The first earth has passed away.
Peter confirms, welook for a new
earth, wherein dwelleth righteous-
ness. My understanding is that this
new earth is like a born again person
whose old tabernacle perishes at
death. Also, it says there was no more
sea. That means no biospherethe
old will cease to exist.
As to the physical location of the
lake of fire, I have no answer and think
yours is as good as mine.
First or Seventh Day?
Dear Sir,
My family was stranded in
Czechoslovakia during WWII.
I experienced life under the Nazis
for six years, and later under
communists, who confiscated our
home. At the time, my father said,
Freedom is worth everything.
I was raised a Catholic, but
later in life, when I started to read
the Bible, I concluded that not all
I believed was based on the Bible.
Sunday worship is my first
concern since Sunday is the first
day of the week, but the Sabbath
is the seventh day. I am quite con-
fused, because all different de-
nominations are not fully bibli-
cal.
From your vast knowledge of
the Bible, I need your advice as to
which denomination in your
opinion would be the one that
follows the teachings of Jesus
Christ.
-J. Drnec, CO
Answer: You are not asking a ques-
tion, but making a statement regard-
ing the seventh day. The Bible is very
clear. The entire law is nailed to the
cross (Colossians 2:14). Verse 16 warns
against false teachers who attempt to
lead believers back into the bondage
of the law, Let no man therefore
judge you in meat, or in drink, or in re-
spect of an holyday, or of the new
moon, or of the Sabbath days. In He-
brews 7 & 8 we read, there is made of
necessity a change also of the lawA
new covenant, he hath made the first
old. Now that which decayeth and
waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Besides, the believers in the New Tes-
tament gathered on the first day of
the week. Why? Because God had
something new created. We no longer
strive toward the day of rest, but we
begin our week with the day of rest.
For us, Jesus has accomplished per-
fectly and eternally His work of re-
demption once and for all.
Meddling with the law, given to
the Jews, is extremely dangerous, for
James 2:10 reads: For whosoever
shall keep the whole law, and yet of-
fend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Moses and Elijah
Dear Arno Froese,
First, and foremost, I would
like to express my appreciation
for your magazine, especially the
question and answer section.
I feel this is an excellent way in
which to share our knowledge of
the Word of God.
In two of the issues that I have
reviewed, the question was asked
concerning the two witnesses,
and who they might be. No one
knows for certain except our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
But, over the years of my study of
the Scriptures, and especially the
prophetic Word, I would like to
share my opinion.
I will say, for myself, if it is two
of the three: Moses, Elijah, and
Enoch, I am of the opinion that it
will be Moses and Elijah. I know
a lot of Christians believe it to be
Elijah and Enoch. Most people
agree that Elijah will be one of
the two.
Moses is the one about whom
I would like to share some
knowledge with your readers, if
I may. Hebrews 9:27 states: And
as it is appointed unto men once
to die, but after this the judg-
ment. From this one verse, peo-
ple tend to believe that it will be
Elijah and Enoch, because nei-
ther of these men faced death. If
this were the only verse we had,
that might be true. But I believe,
to obtain a better understanding,
we have to compare other Scrip-
ture with this one. To do this, we
must ask ourselves, What is
death? The Bible is very clear on
the definition of death. Death is
no more than separation. Separa-
tion from what, we ask?
No. 1: Spiritual death is sepa-
ration from God. When Adam
and Eve sinned in the Garden,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

and they heard the voice of the
Lord God walking in the Garden,
they hid themselves. Isaiah 59:2,
But your iniquities have sepa-
rated between you and your God,
and your sins have hid his face
from you, that he will not hear.
Ephesians 2:1: And you hath he
quickened, who were dead in
trespasses and sins. Verses 5-6:
Even when we were dead in
sins, hath quickened [made
alive] us together with Christ,
(by grace ye are saved;) And hath
raised us up together, and made
us sit together in heavenly places
in Christ Jesus.
John 8:51, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, If a man keep my say-
ing, he shall never see death.
Verse 52, Then said the Jews
unto him, Now we know that
thou hast a devil. Abraham is
dead, and the prophets; and thou
sayest, If a man keep my saying,
he shall never taste of death.
John 11:25, Jesus said unto
her, I am the resurrection, and
the life, he that believeth in me,
though he were dead, yet shall he
live: And whosoever liveth and
believeth in me shall never die.
Believest thou this? Praise God,
I believe with all my heart.
No. 2: Physical deathsame
as spiritual, separation. In the
case of physical death, when God
calls for us, lost or saved, we an-
swer the call. When the soul and
spirit leaves the body, the body is
dead. This is the end.
James 2:26: For as the body
without the spirit is dead, so faith
without works is dead also. Sec-
ond Corinthians 5:6-8: There-
fore we are always confident,
knowing that, whilst we are at
home in the body, we are absent
from the Lord. (For we walk by
faith, not by sight:) We are confi-
dent, I say, and willing rather to
be absent from the body, and to
be present with the Lord.
With these Scriptures, we
should be able to understand that
this is the point in time when the
Lord withdraws both soul and
spirit. The soul and spirit live on,
while the body is lifeless. And the
spirit will reenter the body; the
body, soul and spirit will be com-
plete once again. The body at this
time will be quickened (made
alive to die no more).
Back to Hebrews 9:27: And as
it appointed unto men once to
die, but after this the judgment.
What do we do with those who
have died twice?
1 Kings 17:17-24 Elijah
raises the widows son.
2 Kings 4:18-37 Elisha re-
stores life to the son of the Shu-
nammite.
2 Kings 13:20-21 Dead man
touched bones of Elisha; the man
revived, and stood up on his feet.
Luke 7:11-15 The widows
son raised.
Mark 5:35-42 The daughter
of Jairus raised.
John 11:1-44 The raising of
Lazarus.
These all died and were
brought back to life, and no
doubt they died again. Their
spirit returned to God, who gave
it, and their souls went back to
Heaven or Hell. There, they are
waiting for one of the two resur-
rections: resurrection of life or
resurrection of damnation.
I personally have no problem
with believing Moses will be one
of the two witnesses. He died
once, God buried his body, but
Moses himself is with the Lord in
Glory. If he is one of the wit-
nesses, hell come back in bodily
form, be killed, and God will
raise him and Elijah back to life
again and they will ascend back
to Heaven.
-A. Cobb, WV
Answer: We share your understand-
ing of the two witnesses, and appreci-
ate the clear biblical references and
the profound question, What do we
do with those who have died twice?
Great Tribulation
Dear Mr. Froese:
When I consider birth pangs,
I think of Daniels 70th week be-
ginning with beginning birth
pangs, and then increasing as the
week continues. I then think of
severe birth pangs as the begin-
ning of the Great Tribulation,
which I have always thought of as
the midpoint leading into the sec-
ond 1,260 days. I havent inter-
preted the entire 7 years as being
the Great Tribulation, but only
the last 3 years. Help me on my
interpretation of this point.
My second question relates to
the fullness of the Gentiles. My
understanding has been that:
1) The Rapture will include all
believers, whether Jew or Gen-
tilethe Church, the Body of
Christ.
2) The fullness of the Gen-
tiles will not be completed until
the Second Coming, rather than
being completed at the Rapture.

My understanding is that this
is a correct statement if one con-
siders the full seven year period
as the Great Tribulation. How-
ever, for someone like myself who
considers the Great Tribulation
to be the last 3 years of Daniels
70th week, this would appear to
be taking a mid-Tribulation Rap-
ture position.
Please tell me if I am on the
right track in my interpretation
and whether my understanding
on these points is correct.
-G. Wood, FL
Answer: The Great Tribulation lasts
seven years. We divide it into two sec-
tions: the first 3 years are a time of
unbelievable prosperity, peace and se-
curity. The second 3 years begin
with the Antichrist abolishing the sac-
rifice in Jerusalem, hence persecuting
the Jews. However, according to Reve-
lation 12, they will miraculously es-
cape the persecution of the enemy,
thus fulfilling the statement Jeremiah
made in chapter 30, verse 7, which
concludes, but he [Israel] shall be
saved out of it.
The fullness of the Gentiles is in
reference to the Church. This is evident
when reading Romans 11. Note specif-
ically that Paul speaks to the Gentiles
(verse 13), and then in verse 25 says,
brethren.This should suffice to iden-
tify the fullness of the Church of Jesus
Christ from the Gentiles.
Mid-Tribulation
Dear Editor,
I have been reading the Mid-
night Call for several months now,
and have finally decided to write
after reading the article First
Thessalonians and the Rapture.
This article made an obvious con-
tradiction of the timing of the
Day of the Lord.
Several Old Testament Scrip-
tures were given to describe the
Day of the Lord as being a time of
God pouring out His wrath. Obvi-
ous in the Old Testament descrip-
tion is that it is a time of
destruction at the hand of God.
However, the statement is then
made that it would seem that the
Day of the Lord begins with the
opening of the first seal of Revela-
tion. Anyone who reads Scrip-
ture literally will immediately
understand that the breaking of
the seals describes the rise to
power of the Antichrist, with his
ruthless methods to control the
world, and culminating with the
martyrdom of the saints by the
Antichrist at the breaking of the
fifth seal. Obviously, this is not
part of Gods wrath. Nowhere in
the Old Testament does the de-
scription of the Day of the Lord as
Gods wrath include the martyr-
dom of His saints, and the reign
of the Antichrist. Indeed, Isaiah 2
states that the Lord alone is ex-
alted in the Day of the Lord. Ob-
vious in Revelation is the
exaltation of the Antichrist dur-
ing the breaking of the first five
seals. He is the one being wor-
shipped by the world. Even
Daniel 9:27 states that the An-
tichrist will rule up until the mid-
point of the seven-year treaty he
institutes with Israel.
The claim that the Day of the
Lord begins with the signing of
the peace treaty between An-
tichrist and Israel is not Scrip-
tural. In fact, Joel 2:31 makes a
clear statement of an event that
immediately precedes the Day of
the Lord. There will be a heavenly
sign announcing to the world that
the Day is about to begin, as God
darkens the sky worldwide. And
this is confirmed in Revelation,
for when the sixth seal is broken,
the same description of heavenly
disturbances is given. The result
of this is the whole world recog-
nizing the great day of His wrath
is come, Revelation 6:17.
Since the scroll held by the
Lord with seven visible seals on it
cannot be opened until all the
seals are broken, it is obvious that
Gods wrath cannot begin until
the scroll is opened at the break-
ing of the last seal. This is what is
found in Revelation. At the break-
ing of the seventh seal, the wrath
of God begins. The breaking of
the previous seals is simply de-
scribing the birth pangs leading
up to the Day of the Lord. They
are not Gods wrath by Scriptural
definition; therefore, the Day of
the Lord cannot begin at the sign-
ing of the peace treaty, which ini-
tiates the beginning of the 70th
week of Daniel.
With a clear understanding of
the timing of the Day of the Lord,
comes the understanding of the
place to search for the Rapture.
Since we the Church are not to
experience His wrath, the Rapture
must precede the opening of the
scroll. The Lord said in Luke 17
that His coming would be like the
days of Noah and Lot. The same
day Noah and Lot escaped, judg-
ment fell. The Day of the Lord
will begin the same day the
Church is raptured. This is what

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

NOVEMBER 2011 47
we find in Revelation, as chapter
seven describes the sudden ap-
pearing of the Church in heaven
in conjunction with the sixth
seal, the darkening of the sky,
and immediately preceding the
breaking of the seventh seal.
All of this is confirmed by
reading Matthew 24. The Lord
describes first the birth pangs in
verses 4-25. He then describes
the same cosmic disturbance as
in Joel 2 and Revelation 6, into
which He appears visible to the
whole world; and then He gath-
ers the Church to meet Him in
the clouds with a great trumpet
blast. All of this fulfills all the
descriptions of the Rapture given
elsewhere in Scripture. Also,
why is the meeting the Lord in
the clouds, as 1 Thessalonians
4:17 states, never discussed? If
the Rapture is instantaneous
worldwide, then the world must
be covered by a cloud since
Christians are located world-
wide. And such an event is in-
deed presented in the verses
already discussedJoel 2:31,
Matthew 24:29, Revelation
6:12all describing the same
event immediately prior to the
Day of the Lord and the Rapture
of the Church.
-D. Christ, PA
Answer: Based on my understanding,
theDay of the Lordis the literal, phys-
ical appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ
in Israel on the Mount of Olives. This
occurrence finalizes the seven-year
period of the Great Tribulation. When
Jesus comes, then shall that Wicked
be revealed, whom the Lord shall con-
sume with the spirit of his mouth, and
shall destroy with the brightness of his
coming (2 Thessalonians 2:8).
Generally, it is accepted that the
Antichrist will make a peace treaty
with Israel, which seems quite logical.
However, Daniel 9:27 reads, And he
[Antichrist] shall confirm the
covenant. Antichrist will confirm or
agree to the reinstitution of the tem-
ple sacrifice in the rebuilt temple in
Jerusalem. Later in Daniel, we read
that the Antichrist shall have indigna-
tion against the holy covenant
(Daniel 11:30). We must recall Jesus
prophecy, if another shall come in his
own name, him ye will receive (John
5:43). Israel will accept Antichrist.
Matthew 24 relates to the Jews,
highlighting His physical return to Is-
rael. If we are to read Matthew 24
chronologically, then after His return,
verse 31 will be implemented, And he
shall send his angels with a great
sound of a trumpet, and they shall
gather together his elect fromthe four
winds, from one end of heaven to the
other. Note, however, that this is not
the Rapture of the Church. The distinc-
tion is clearly made by the words, he
shall send his angels. For the Church,
The Lord himself shall descend from
heaven. These are two different
events.
After the Rapture has taken place,
there will be hell on earth, but not as
we often think. In the beginning, An-
tichrist does not implement ruthless
methods to control the world, but
rather uses democratic principles. As
documented in Daniel 11, he comes
peaceably, with flatteries, and de-
ceitfully.
Furthermore, Revelation 13 con-
firms the enthusiasm of the worlds
population for this great man, And all
the world wondered after the
beastand they worshipped the
beast, saying, Who is like unto the
beast? who is able to make war with
him? He is going to be the most
benevolent leader the world has ever
seen, for the first 3 years. But all this
belongs to the time of darkness; there-
fore, the light of the world, the Church,
must be raptured before darkness is
going to have its heyday.

ince the word liberal has been
twisted beyond recognition, it is
helpful to read what Dr. Barnes writes
about Isaiah 32:8: The word liberal
means generous, noble,
large-hearted, benevo-
lent; a man of large views
and of public spirit; a man above cov-
etousness, avarice, and self-seeking;
a man who is willing to devote himself
to the welfare of his country, and to the
interests of his fellowmen. It is implied
here that such persons would be selected to ad-
minister the affairs of the government under the wise
and virtuous prince of whom the prophet speaks.
Doubtless, the prophet speaks of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, for again we read, For God so loved the
world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoso-
ever believeth in him should not perish, but have ever-
lasting life. That is biblically defined liberalism. It is
based on Gods grace, such as we cannot grasp with our
intellect, but we realize it in our spirit.
Based on Gods righteousness, we would have no
chance to survive the pure righteousness of God, but
thank God, there is grace.
The Apostle Peter concludes his writing with the
words, But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now
and for ever. Amen (2 Peter 3:18).
Purpose of Christmas Catalog
In a world of insecurity, commotion, catastrophes, and dis-
appointments, there is the message of hope and of grace;
it is the message that salvation came in the person Jesus
Christ, and is still offered to all the world.
Thus, the resources we offer in these 16 pages serve to
contribute toward that endproclaiming the wonderful
grace of God to mankind.

Letters to the Editor
One of the popular columns for Midnight Call readers is
Letters to the Editor. Many ask, When will Volume 2
come? The answer is it wont. This book covers most of
the basic questions the Editor has been confronted with
during the last 40 plus years of ministry. So, there are no
plans for Volume 2.
Letters to the Editor is a hardcover, 438-page book, di-
vided into 22 chapters. It begins with Creation versus
Evolution, and ends with Eschatology.
The uniqueness of this book consists of the fact that it
is a selection of original letters published in Midnight Call.
The book is categorized to make it easy to read and under-
stand. We highly recommend this volume for your library.

World Prophecy Congress
21-23 October 2012
Make plans already now to attend the all-important World
Prophecy Congress, 21-23 October 2012. The event will be
held under the dynamic theme, When the Power of Light
Meets Darkness.
For the first time, we have secured Dr. Roger Liebi, a
much sought after theologian in Bible believing circles in
Europe. Dr. Liebi is an extraordinarily talented musician,
theologian and language expert. You do not want to miss
this amazing event; thus, the early announcement.
Promised Land Prophecy Tour
One of the highlights for multiple thousands of believers is
a tour to the land of Israel. Many testify that their Bible
comes alive when visiting the Holy Land. Its the place
where it all began. God
entrusted the Law to His
people Israel, and from
the tribe of Judah came
forth the Messiah, ex-
actly in accordance with
Bible prophecy. He proclaimed, Salvation is of the Jews.
This will be your opportunity to travel with likeminded be-
lievers throughout the land of present day Israel. You will
walk in biblical historic places, see Bible prophecy being
fulfilled, and you will experience the spirit of expectation
that lies upon this land and people who are still waiting for
fulfillment of Bible prophecy, such as Zephaniah 3:20: At
that time will I bring you again, even in the time that
I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among
all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity be-
fore your eyes, saith the LORD.
Keep Midnight Call in Your File
We suggest that you keep this issue in a special place. It is
because nearly all of our resources offered in the past as
well as new ones are listed in this virtually complete cata-
log. Now more than ever, we need solid, biblically-based
resources to help us see through the confusion and the in-
security of our times.
There is no better time than now to place your order for
books, CDs, DVDs, and Bibles to give as gifts to family and
friends. The message of love, hope, and abundant grace is
what the world needs, particularly now as we see threat-
ening clouds of judgment on the horizon for planet Earth.
You can make a difference by giving a gift to someone that
may last for all eternity.

With Love to Israel
The guitarist Attila Ront, born 1969 in Miskolc, Hungary, started his musical education at a local
academy when he was nine years old. In 1996 he came to believe in Jesus Christ as his Lord and
Savior, and nowhe has dedicated his talent to serving Him. Because of his gypsy background he
feels deeply attracted to the Jewish people, as gypsies and Jews share a similar history of
suffering. Even during the Holocaust many gypsies were murdered. Ronts musical style is a
vivid expression of that closeness to the Jewish people. One of the major guidelines for his
music is contained in the words of Psalm137:5: If I forget you, OJerusalem, may my right
hand forget its skill. This is the main reason why he is wholeheartedly singing and
playing for Israel and Jerusalem.

Secret Mysteries of Americas Beginnings

Architecture of Washington, D.C.

The greatest Whodunit of the past
500 years! Secret Mysteries takes the
mystery out of Americas history. If
America was founded as a Christian
nation, why are many of its symbols,
buildings, and monuments based on
Pagan traditions? There is no doubt that
much of Americas national heritage
was Christian, but just as a coin has two
sides, our national heritage has a
second sideone based squarely on
occult secret societies and their values.
This video continues our examination
of the true history of America's
founding. We examine the
architecture, the paintings, the
sculptures and the street layouts of
Washington, D.C. Since so much
controversy over the centuries has
erupted concerning the role
Freemasons have played in the
founding of America and of our
nations Capitol, we set up a public
debate with top-ranking Masonic
authorities on the one hand and
independent researchers on the other.
This high quality History Channel
type documentary proves the
following points about the two
Seals on the back of the One Dollar
Bill with clarity and precision: 1) The
two Seals are Egyptian and
Luciferian 2) The two Seals were
introduced by Freemasons, in 1782
3) Masonic President Franklin
Roosevelt, aided by his Secretary of
Agriculture/Vice President Wallace,
ordered these Seals to be placed on
the back of the Dollar Bill in 1935,
having been urged on and advised
by the Russian channeler/ mystic,
Nicolas Roerach.

The Hidden Faith of the Founding Fathers is perhaps the first and only documentary to
go where no film has ever gone before, confronting the little known beliefs of Americas
founders. Conservative Christian leaders often claim that the revolutionaries were
godly men who were trying to build a Christian nation. But was their faith the true faith
of the Bible? Or is it possible that the exact opposite is true? The real questions are:
What did the founders believe about Jesus Christ? Christianity begins with faith in the
Person of Christ Himself: what did the founders think of Him? What did they think of the
Gospel? Were they fighting for Christianity, or against it?

Using the Bible as his timeline, Ussher began with the
death of Nebuchadnezzar as a reliable date and worked
backward through the genealogies of the Old Testament
to arrive at the date of creation 4004 B.C.
Integrating biblical history (around 15% of the text is from the Bible) with secular (around
85% of the material is from non-biblical sources), Ussher wrote this masterpiece.
Considered not only a literary classic, but also an accurate reference, The Annals of the
World was so highly regarded for its preciseness that the timeline from it was included in
the margins of many King James Version Bibles throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th
centuries, calling to mind the fact that the earth is only around 6,000 years old.

Preparing Catholics for Eternity
This book will equip and encourage Christians to proclaim the glorious Gospel of grace to
Catholics and also persuade Roman Catholics to trust the Word of God over the teachings and
traditions of their church. The book is rich with Scripture and begins by laying a biblical
foundation for truth and authority. It pleads with Catholics to work out their salvation with fear
and trembling by examining the biblical requirements for salvation, how sins are forgiven and
how they can know eternal life is secured by God.

What John Calvin and his early followers of the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually
believed and practiced
Although there are disputed variations of the Calvinist doctrine, among its chief propo-
nents (whomwe quote extensively in context) there is general agreement on certain core
beliefs. Many evangelicals who think they are Calvinist will be surprised to learn of
Calvins belief in salvation through infant baptism, and of his grossly un-Christian behav-
ior, at times, as the Protestant Pope of Geneva, Switzerland.
Most shocking of all, however, is Calvinisms misrepresentation of God who is love.
It is our prayer that this volume will enable readers to examine more carefully the vital is-
sues involved and to followGods Holy Wordnot man.
Are you prepared to Earnestly contend for the
faith?
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling
down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth it-
self against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obe-
dience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
Study to shewthyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
The book that needs to be read by every serious Christian.
