Stainless Steel Conveyor Pulleys

How do you know when to use a stainless steel conveyor pulley?
How should it be constructed?
What are the finish requirements for the application?
Selecting the right component for your particular application
is essential for the success of a conveyor design. To meet the
requirements of a wide variety of applications, PCI has
designed three classes of stainless steel conveyor pulleys.
Stainless steel components are used for many reasons, but
primarily corrosion resistance, chemical resistance and

sanitary applications. The three classes of stainless steel

pulleys vary in construction and surface finish specifications.
Using the following selection guide will help you determine
the most economical and appropriate pulley design for your
specific application. For more information contact a PCI
sales engineer or check out our web site at www.pcimfg.com.

Pulleys can be demagnetized for an additional cost. For more details, or to discuss your specific requirements, please
contact a PCI Sales Engineer.

Class I
Sanitary class
Designed for direct food contact
zone applications
Flush-end plate construction
Fabricated from 304 stainless steel
All surfaces have a finish of 32 RA or
better
Available in diameters of 2" - 8"
Lengths up to 48" - maximum lengths depend on
diameter selected
Available in Type 1 hub construction only
Can be supplied with vulcanized food grade lagging

Manufactured to strict finish requirements on all surfaces

(32 RA or better) including weld fillets, there are no
imperfections on any of the surfaces for bacteria to collect.
This class of pulleys was designed to be used in food
industry applications where FDA and USDA requirements

for sanitary components are the most stringent. Available

in standard type-1 (welded axle) construction only. The
construction and finish tolerances of this class of pulley
make it the most expensive of the classes.

Class II
Washdown/corrosion resistant class
Designed for non-food contact zone washdown applications
Flush-end plate construction
Fabricated from 304 stainless steel
Standard mill finish, media treated on all surfaces
Welds are ground and media treated
Available in Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 hub styles
Can be supplied with stainless steel or carbon steel bearings.
Please specify when ordering.
Available in a wide variety of vulcanized rubber compounds
construction minimizes the possibility of material build-up.
Designed for use on conveyors where sanitary requirements
are less stringent, or where product is already packaged.
Available in most standard hub styles. Diameters 2" - 12".

Finish requirements are less stringent in this class making it

less expensive than Class-1 construction. All welds are
ground, and all surfaces are media treated for a consistent
finish appearance. Surfaces may have slight imperfections,
including pits, scratches, and small pockets. Flush end-plate

Mine Duty Drum Pulleys

MD Series
Mine duty drum pulleys are designed for mining
applications. The extra heavy duty construction is ideal for
use on conveyor systems where greater load capacity is
required. Durability makes them desirable to use in critical
applications that demand less maintenance and down time.

Mine Duty Wing Pulleys

MW Series
Designed to operate in severe environments where a standard heavy
duty wing pulley would have a shorter service life. Mine duty wing
pulleys are constructed with heavier materials and use stiffener rings
and gussets on all sizes. Built to last in extreme applications.

Lagging Options
Vulcanized Rubber Lagging
Standard Pulley lagging is 60 durometer SBR. Also available in a wide
selection of durometers and compounds such as: Neoprene, Nitrile,
EPDM. See page 39 for more information.
Supplied in rough ground finish as standard.
Please specify crown or flat face when ordering. Special crown
configurations can be supplied per your specifications.

Vulcanized Rubber Lagging Groove Options

Lagging is bonded directly to the pulley core. This process creates a strong durable bond for a long service life.
If grooving is required, please specify direction of rotation. Normally the apex of the groove pattern is leading the
pattern in rotation. PCI can also re-lag your existing pulleys and rollers in our plant.

Spiral Wrap Rough Top

PCI pulleys are available with spiral wrapped rough top lagging. Strips
of belting are glued and riveted to the pulley core providing traction on
drive pulleys. Economical and easy to replace, spiral wrap lagging does
not have the same bond strength as vulcanized lagging. This style of
lagging is more suited to smaller package handling pulleys, where
conveyor loads are lighter and drive torques are lower. Not
recommended on pulleys over 12" in diameter.

Replaceable Lagging
Vulcanized rubber is bonded to steel backing plates that are formed to
the pulley rim. Pads are held in place by retainers that are welded or
bolted to the pulley rim. New pads can be installed on a pulley without
removing the pulley from the conveyor. PCI can supply this type of
lagging on a new pulley, or install it in our plant on your existing pulleys.

Wing Pulley Lagging

Replaceable wing lagging is available for all sizes of heavy duty and
mine duty wing pulleys. Wing lagging can help extend belt and pulley
life. PCI can install wing lagging on new pulleys. Re-lagging service is
available by returning your pulleys to our plant.

RATING SCALE

Definitions of Rubber Characteristics

Abrasion Resistance
A materials ability to withstand physical and mechanical action such as rubbing, scraping, or erosion that tends to
progressively remove material from its surface.

EX = EXCELLENT
VG = VERY GOOD
AVG = AVERAGE
FAIR
POOR

Coefficient of Friction
Ratio of the tangental force required to move one surface over another to the total normal force pressing the two surfaces together. A lagging
material with a high or excellent coefficient of friction will result in better traction than one with a low or poor coefficient. Rough surfaces will
have a higher coefficient of friction than smooth surfaces of like materials.
Durometer
Measure of rubber hardness.
Hysteresis
The measure of heat buildup caused by friction or other mechanical action when the rubber is in motion.
Maximum Service Temperature
Maximum continuous operating temperature ignoring a temperature increase caused by hysteresis.
Millable
The milling of uncured rubber in the production or processing stage before curing of the rubber compound. Generally these processing steps
are required to allow for specific molding, extrusion and curing processes.
Resiliency
Ability to return to original size and shape after deformation.
Tear Strength
Maximum load required to tear apart a prescribed size rubber sample.
Tensile Strength
The amount of force required to stretch a prescribed sample size to the breaking point.
Vulcanization
The process of permanently changing a rubber compound to a cured state with heat and pressure and the appropriate facilitating chemicals
to initiate this chemical cross-linking process.

Pulley Selection Considerations

Pulley Failure and Shaft Diameter
The most common cause of pulley failure is end disk fatigue, which
in turn is primarily caused by undersized shafting. Therefore, the most
important step in selecting a pulley is to determine the proper shaft
diameter. There are two important conditions to consider: shaft deflection
and maximum shaft stress. (Refer to ANSI/CEMA B105. 1-1992,
Specifications for Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys.) A shaft that is sized
per ANSI/CEMA B105.1-1992 does not have a maximum free shaft
deflection at the hub of 0.0023 inches per inch or a bending stress greater
than 8000 psi.
A maximum free shaft deflection at the hub of 0.0023 inches per inch
limits the alternating bending stresses imposed on the end disk by the
shaft bending, which could cause it to fatigue and fail. This type of failure
is indicated by a crack just outside of the weld that joins the hub to the
end disk (see picture at right). A bending stress of 8000 psi limits the
possibility of shaft fatigue due to the alternating bending stresses.
Substituting higher strength steel shafting does not allow the use of a
smaller diameter shaft in most pulley applications. Higher strength steel
does not have a higher modulus of elasticity, the property that controls
deflection and is independent of the strength. However, if high torsional
loading is present, higher strength shafting may be beneficial.

END DISK FATIGUE FAILURE

Loads on a Pulley
The load on a pulley may originate from many sources, some of which
are listed below:
Resultant load caused by belt tension
Increases in belt tension beyond design considerations:
Take-ups that are tightened excessively
Excessive material on the belt
Material build up on the drum
Weight of the pulley
Misalignment

XT Hub Selection
The taper angle on the XT design is self-locking, which
alleviates bolt breakage experienced on bushings with a taper
angle greater than 2" taper per foot.

Hub Selection
When choosing a hub and bushing system, it is important to
understand the different design features and the effects they
have on conveyor pulley applications. Consider a design
that minimizes end disk prestressing, grips the shaft firmly, is
easily removed, and is not adversely affected by the bending
moments on the pulley shaft.

The holes used to install and remove the bushing are spaced
equally around the bushing split and keyway. Upon
installation, this balances the load required at each bolt
location, which provides consistent contact pressure on the
shaft. During removal, the equally spaced jack-screws
eliminate the chance of bushing breakage. The steep taper
angle requires less force to remove the bushing, further
reducing the chance of bushing breakage (see picture below).

XT Hubs and Bushings

The XT Hub and Bushing system was specifically designed
for use in conveyor pulleys with two hubs.
The XT design has a steep taper angle, 2" taper per foot,
which minimizes the end disk deflection or prestressing that
occurs when bushings are installed. The reduction in end
disk prestressing reduces the likelihood of end disk fatigue.
A steep taper angle will reduce the clamping pressure on
the shaft, but the XT design compensates by increasing the
number and size of the bolts used to install the bushing.

Taper-Lock Hub Selection

Taper-Lock

Hub Sizing

The Taper-Lock Hub and Bushing system was designed

primarily for use in sprockets and sheaves with one hub and
has been used in conveyor pulleys due to its availability.

To select a hub size, choose the smallest hub that will allow
the shaft size determined per ANSI/CEMA B105.1-1992.
Torsional loading and shallow keyways may also affect hub
sizing.

The Taper-Lock design has a taper angle of 8 degrees, or

1-11/16" taper per foot, which minimizes end disk deflection.
However, of all hub and bushing systems, it has the lowest
ability to grip the shaft.

Pulley Face Configurations

Pulley Shapes

Trapezoidal Crown
Tracks belt without excess stretch.
Provides an even wear surface.
Lengthens belt life.

Enables belt to be tracked.

Peak at center causes wear
and stretching on belt.
Decreases belt life.

Flat Face

Multiple Crown

Single Crown

Enhanced belt tracking effect.

Provides an even wear surface.
Lengthens belt life.

Extremely difficult to track belt.

Provides an even wear surface.
Lengthens the life of the belt.

Trapezoidal Crown is the STANDARD CROWN on PCI conveyor Pulleys

Flat at the center, with tapered ends, reduces "belt wear" by providing an even wear surface.
Reduce belt wear = prolonged belt life.
Trapezodial Crown provides maximum concentricity with consistant tolerances and design everytime.

Why V-Groove Pulleys?

V-groove pulleys are typically specified where the conveyor length to width ratio is less than 3-1, and in other instances where
belt tracking is difficult. V-grooves are intended to help guide V-section belting, not to assist in driving the belt. Therefore,
clearances are incorporated. V-groove dimensions are approximately 1/4" wider and 1/16" deeper than V-belt dimensions.
V-grooves are available for all sizes of FC, Stainless Steel and MC Series Pulleys.
