Launching Bay ROES - PC Users

Bay ROES requires Java from Sun Microsystems to run, and will automatically check to see if you have the proper version installed on your machine. To learn more about Java, visit www.java.com.

Launching Bay ROES for the first time:

1. Visit the Bay ROES Launch Page on our website and click on the link provided, or visit http://www.bayphoto.com/ROESLaunch to launch Bay ROES now. 2. If you are on a PC and you do not have Java, Bay ROES will first download and run a Java Installer.

3.

Click on yes to install Java on your machine. When you click yes the system will then proceed to download the Java installer. This is a fairly large download and only happens the first time you run the application (unless you subsequently delete Java from your machine).

3 of 57

4.

When the installer is downloaded it will run and the installer's Welcome dialog will be presented.

5.

Click on the Next button to proceed with the installation. This will bring up the Java Licensing Agreement.

8.

Select the browser that you intend to use and click the Next button. At this point the installer will install all the necessary Java components into your system.

9.

When the application has been downloaded, Java Web Start will alert you to the fact that the application is requesting unrestricted access to your machine and ask you if you want to allow the application to run.

10. In this case unrestricted access to your machine means that the application will be able to read and write files to your local machine. This is necessary for Bay ROES to read your image files, so click on the Start button to launch the application.

USERS GUIDE | Working with Bay ROES

Creating an Order
There are three primary steps to creating an order with Bay ROES: selecting a print size or template product, populating the product with your images, and adding it to your order.

Selecting a Print Size or Template

The Sizes Palette features a large selection of print sizes and templates, organized into tabs by product category.

To show the Sizes Palette, hold down the ALT key (Windows) or OPTION key (Mac) and click on the SIZES button. You can also click on the SIZES button and select Show Sizes Palette from the bottom of the menu.
The Standard Catalog is shown by default. To switch to a different catalog, such as Press Printed Greeting Cards, click on the Catalogs button and select the catalog of your choice. 1. 2. Browse through the various products by clicking on the tabs in the Sizes Palette to determine which product you want to order. When you have found a print size or template you are interested in, click once on that product to display it in the Layout Area. Note: If the template contains graphics, it may take a few seconds to load.

18 of 57

USERS GUIDE | Working with Bay ROES

Populating a Product
Each print size or template contains at least one placeholder for an image, also known as an image node. 1. 2. Select one or more images from the Images Area. Drag and drop or double-click on the image(s) to add them to the selected product in the Layout Area.

Several selection options are available in the Images Area. Typical selection rules apply, so the SHIFT key will select a range of images, and the CONTROL key (Windows) or COMMAND key (Mac) selects individual images. If you select multiple images from the Images Area and drag and drop them into the Layout Area, the application will create an item in the order for each image that was dropped. This is a shortcut method that can be used if you need to create the same product for a number of different images. For example, if you add 10 images to a 4x6 print size, you will have the opportunity to add the images to your order as 10 individual 4x6 prints.

You must re-open the order in ROES and send it via the Order Completion Wizard in order to package the image files with the order. Also, if you move the images to another location on your hard drive after the order is saved, you will need to put them back in their exact location in order to re-open the order in ROES. Managing Sent and Queued Orders with the Queue Manager

After you set up an order to send through the Order Completion Wizard, ROES orders are processed through the Queue Manager. Using the Queue Manager, orders can be sent right away, or saved to be sent at a later time. The Queue Manager also allows for automatic retries, which is very helpful when working with less reliable internet connections. When you immediately send, the Order Completion Wizard will end with a simple notice that the order has been added to the immediate queue:

The order will be added to the Queue and you can continue working on another order right away while the Queue sends in the background:

29 of 57

USERS GUIDE | Working with Bay ROES

With the Queue Manager, you can see transfer rate, total size of the order, and a progress bar. To send one or more orders, just press SEND on each, or press SEND ALL to send all orders. The orders will be sent one at a time.

To schedule an order to be sent later, use the Settings within the Queue:

Simply enter the time you want the orders sent. From Settings you can also determine how many times to retry to send if the connection fails, and how frequently. We recommend that you set the times to retry for 5 and the Minutes between retry attemps to 10.

To access the Queue Manager without going through the Order Completion Wizard, click on the OPEN &
SAVE button in the Control Panel at the bottom of the ROES screen and select Show Queued Orders.

Placing a Re-order Through Bay ROES

When you have placed an order through Bay ROES and you want to send an order containing the same images again, there is no need to resend the images since they are already at the lab. This saves you from the long upload times that are a result of sending transferring large image files over the internet.

To place a re-order through Bay ROES:

1. Create the order items the way that you want them, making sure to only use images that have been sent in a previous order. 2. In the Review Order Area, enter the ROES order number (ie. ROES123456) for the previous order in the Reorder field. If you are unsure of the ROES order number, please contact us at roes@bayphoto.com.

3.

Click COMPLETE ORDER and follow the prompts to send the order to Bay Photo Lab for processing just as you would send a regular order.

Cropping and Rotating Images in a Product

To change the crop on an image, simply drag the image with your mouse. To change the scale or rotation of an image, use the Crop and Rotation tools located in the Image Editing Area, just below the Layout Area.

ROTATE LAYOUT
Rotates the selected print size or template 90. To change the direction of rotation, hold the ALT key (Windows) or the OPTION key (Mac) and click on the ROTATE LAYOUT button.

ROTATE IMAGE
Rotates the selected image 90 counter-clockwise. To change the direction of rotation, hold the ALT key (Windows) or the OPTION key (Mac) and click on the ROTATE IMAGE button. Clicking on the arrow to the right of the ROTATE IMAGE button will bring up a slider which allows rotation of the image in 1 increments to 180.

ZOOM
Shows a zoom slider similar to the one in the Image Area. Dragging the slider to the right will make the selected image larger within the node, while dragging it to the left will make it smaller until the outer edges of the image are at the bounds of the node. For more image editing options, visit the Using the Pro Tool Palette section of this tutorial. 32 of 57

USERS GUIDE Working with Images, Print Sizes, & Templates

Using the Pro Tool Palette

Some commonly used tools are available between the Image Editing Area and the Control Panel in the Pro Tool Palette. The Pro Tool Palette can be toggled on or off in the Preferences menu.

HOLD CROP Holds the Crop when a new product or image is selected. This is only possible when the image and product have the same aspect ratio as the ones currently in use. If the aspect ratios differ, a best approximation is used. HOLD OPTIONS Holds the options on a product after pressing ADD TO ORDER. When this is unlocked, options on the working product will be removed after adding the item to the order.

33 of 57

USERS GUIDE Working with Images, Print Sizes, & Templates

HOLD QUANTITY Holds the quantity on a product after pressing ADD TO ORDER. When this is unlocked, the quantity on the working product will be revert to one after adding the item to the order. HOLD IMAGES Keeps images in the layout between product changes. HOLD IMAGE Holds the image in a node by ignoring drags and drops. This is useful to lock a photographer logo into a node while adding many images to an order. This tool is only enabled on products with more than one node. CROP OR FIT Changes the behavior or the node to crop the image or fit it entirely. Fit will scale the image so that the image bounds are entirely within the product bounds; this frequently introduces white space into the product, but it is useful for proof sheets. Hold the ALT key (Windows) or OPTION key (Mac) to set crop or fit mode on all nodes in a product. ROTATE IMAGE Attempts to match aspect ratios on an image by applying a rotation when a vertical image is dragged and dropped into a horizontal node and vice versa. If a node is square, the rounding error in calculating the larger axis may cause an image to be rotated or not. RECTICLE Displays a recticle in every image node on the product.

Adding Custom Text

Some products in Bay ROES, such as Promotional Prints, Greeting Cards, Magnets, Trader Cards, and Memory Mates, allow you to type custom text directly into a product. If a product allows you to add text, you will see a text node with a message similar to "Type here or remove this text."

When you click on the text node, a text box will slide out of the node. To add text, type or paste your custom message into the text box. If you do not wish to add text to the product, simply delete it from the text box. For information about changing text color, style, and font, see the Options Palette section.

Using the Options Palette

The Options Palette allows you to customize the attributes of the selected template based on your personal preferences. Available options vary from product to product, however the most common are Image (Color, Black and White, or Sepia), Background Color, Background Opacity, and Stroke Color. Additional options such as Border Style, Border Color, and Vignette Style are available on Standard Size Prints. On templates with text nodes, Text Font, Text Color, and Text Style can be applied. Image Options such as Retouching, Digital Artwork, and Restoration are accessible by clicking on the IMAGE OPTIONS tab.

Selecting a Product for Use With Pager
After starting Pager in ROES, the primary step to using Pager to design or alter a template is to select a product from the Sizes Palette. Bay Photo offers a large selection of pre-designed templates. We recommend choosing one that is close to your finished design in order to save time. For the example below, we went to the 5. Templates > 12x12 tab, and chose product number 114-12.

(suggested screen configuration) NOTE: If a template is not Pager enabled, Pager tools will be grayed out. If this happens, please choose another template as your starting point.

Using Pager Design & Selection Tools
Once a template is selected, Pager Design & Selection Tools can be used to add, move, and resize template nodes and elements.

Before making any changes to a template, you must first select the appropriate tool from the Design & Selection Tools palette.

The IMAGE button is used to move or crop an image within a node. For more information on how to insert images into template nodes, please view our ROES Video Tutorials. The EDIT button is used for making changes to an existing node. Use to select a node, then resize the node or apply attributes (see "Applying Node Attributes With Pager" section). The DRAW button is used to draw new image nodes on the selected template.

The TEXT DRAW button is used to draw new text nodes on the selected template.
The MONTAGE button gives you several options for automatically generating grid layouts or collages.

To Move and/or Resize a Node: 1. 2. Click on the EDIT button. Place your mouse cursor over the node that you want to move or resize. Depending on the area of the node you are over, the cursor will change to one of the following: MOVE NODE Hold mouse over center area of node. RESIZE EDGE Hold mouse over edge of node. RESIZE CORNER Hold mouse over corner of node. ROTATE NODE Hold mouse near inside corner of node. 3. When you see the desired cursor, click and hold the mouse to drag the node to its desire size or location.

TIP: Select the "Show hot areas when editing nodes" option in the PREFERENCES menu for a visual of the
interactive cursor areas on the selected node. To Create a New Node: 1. 2. 3. 4. Click on the DRAW button to create an image node, or click on the TEXT DRAW button to create a text node. Go to the Layout Area and point the cursor in the location where you would like to start drawing your node. Click and hold the mouse button while dragging the cursor along the template. When you've finished creating the image node, release the mouse button.

To Move One Node Behind or In Front of Another: 1. 2. Click on the EDIT button, then click once on the node that you want to move. Use the LAYER buttons to move the node forward and back.

To Delete a Node from the Template: 1. 2. Click on the EDIT button. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) on the node you want to remove.

3. Select REMOVE NODE.

TIP: Other common actions can also be performed by Right-clicking (Windows) or Control-clicking
(Mac) on the image node of your choice, such as duplicating nodes, setting the layer order, and setting the node type (see below). To Set the Node Type: Setting the node type can be helpful when you want to change a node from an image node to a text node, or when you want a node to be for stroke or fill purposes only. 1. 2. 3. Click on the EDIT button. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) on the node for which you would like to change the node type. Scroll to NODE TYPE, then select one of the three available options: IMAGE NODE Accepts images only (no text). TEXT NODE Accepts text only (no images). EMPTY NODE For layout purposes only. Useful for creating layout elements such as strokes and filled boxes.

To Duplicate a Node: There are certain Pager Attributes that can only be applied to new, user-created nodes. Sometimes it is useful to duplicate a node in order to be able to apply these attributes (see Pager FAQs for details). Also, this is a good way to create multiple nodes that are exactly the same size. 1. 2. 3. 4. Click on the EDIT button. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) on the node that you wish to duplicate. Select DUPLICATE. The new node will appear exactly on top of the existing one. Use the MOVE tools to pick up the node and put it in the desired location. Working with Layout Grids: A layout grid can help you align and position nodes more accurately. To add a layout grid, click on the GRID button in the Attribute Tools area, then set the spacing for your grid. Check the "Snap to Grid" box to move your nodes in specified increments only.

Using the Montage Feature

The Montage feature offers several tools for automatically creating grid layouts and collages. Several sizing, rotation, and positioning options are available for customizing your layout, including a random placement feature.

To automatically generate image nodes using the Montage feature:

1. Select a print size or template from the Sizes Palette. For best results, we recommend starting with a single-node product, such as those found in the Standard Sizes tab. 2. Click on the MONTAGE button in the Pager Design & Selection Tools palette.

3.
4.

Choose the settings for your template from the options available. Click on the CREATE NEW MONTAGE button to create the montage on the selected print size or template. To randomize the placement of the nodes once the montage has been created, click on the RANDOMIZE button.

Applying Node Attributes with Pager
The Attribute Tools can be use to change a node's stroke color, fill color, opacity, text color, and more. You can also apply a mask file or a drop shadow to an image node using the Attribute Tools palette.

To Change/Add Color Attributes on a Node:

1. 2. Click on the EDIT button and select the node that you want to edit. Choose the appropriate Attribute Tool for the item that you would like to add/change. STROKE COLOR Edit the stroke color, width, and opacity of the selected node. FILL COLOR Edit the fill color and opacity for the selected node. TEXT COLOR Edit the text color for the selected node (works only for nodes with text).

TIP: The eyedropper tool can be used to select a color from one of the available color palettes, or from any of
the elements on your template. To finalize your color choice and move on to editing the next item, you will need to re-click on the EDIT button. If you don't do this, the eyedropper will pick up the color from the next item you click on, and override your original color choice.

USERS GUIDE Modifying Templates or Creating Your Own Designs with Pager
Working With Masks:
An image mask is a graphic file made up of black and white areas. When applied to an image, the black areas of the file will act as a window through which you can see the image, while the white areas are transparent. This is especially useful for creating nodes with fuzzy edges or irregular shapes.

To easily add a mask to an image node, first click on the EDIT button and select the image node that you would like to apply the mask to. Next, click the MASK button and browse to the location of the mask on your computer. Click OPEN to apply the mask. To remove a mask after it has been applied, Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) on the image node that contains the mask, and click RESET. NOTE: When adding a stroke to an image node that uses a mask, the stroke will be applied to the outside of the node itself; not the outside of the mask. Drop shadows do not work reliably with masks.

The Packager
The Packager is an option that allows photographers to group Bay Photo's single node products into packages and groups of their own choosing. The package is represented as a series of concentric layouts in the layout area, with dotted lines showing where each layout's bounds will fall. When an image is added to a package and the package is added to the order, each product in the package is added to the order. This speeds order entry for commonly offered photographer products. The Packager is used by creating groups and packages in the My Packages palette, and dragging lab products from the Sizes Palette to the newly created packages.

When the new package is first created, it will be disabled since it contains no products. To add a product to the new package, simply drag a product from the Sizes Palette to it. When a product is dragged onto a user package, the package is badged with a green "+" to signify that if it's dropped on that package, it'll become an item in that package.

The area below packages will show the constituent products in the selected package. This area offers the ability to rotate a product and change the product's quantity in the package.

This area also allows selection of the outermost, bounding layout in the package. This is the package which constrains drags and has all other layouts plotted relative to it. The bounding layout is signified by a blue square badge on the package icon. To make a layout the bounding layout, click its icon.

The Presenter
The Presenter allows you to show your images in a comparison mode for two images, and as a slide show with music. Images can be rearranged and these arrangements saved for later use, e.g. if you wish to lay out a sequence of images before your customers arrive at the studio.

The Presenter is shown by clicking the Presenter button to the left of the Image Area's Zoom button.

Thumbnail Area
The thumbnail area is identical to the one in the main application window, but has additional features. The area can be expanded by dragging the horizontal divider at the top of the thumbnails. There are several controls available for this thumbnail area, which are shown below the thumbnails. The Zoom and Folder... controls are identical to the main thumbnail area's. The other controls have the following functions: Allows an arrangement of image thumbnails, with their rotations, to be stored to disk for use later. Opening and saving arrangements use a standard file dialog for browsing the filesystem. Displays a dialog of settings for the slide show

Music can be played during the slide show by entering the path to a music application and a music file. Mac OS X Java 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 has some issue opening an application path from Java that contains a space. To avoid this, use a path that doesn't contain spaces. Starts a slide show of images with the settings specified.

Closes the Presenter.

Comparison Area
The comparison area consists of two identical panes in which images can be shown side by side. To show an image in the comparison area, just drag it from the thumbnail area. Several controls are offered for each pane area:

Shows the image in the thumbnail area before the one shown in this pane.

Shows the image in the thumbnail area after the one shown in this pane.

Removes the image in the pane from the thumbnail area, and displays the next image. The image is not deleted from disk, it simply isn't shown in the thumbnail area. Scales the image much like the layout area zoom control.

Rotates the image shown in the pane and its thumbnail by 90 clockwise.

Rotates the image shown in the pane and its thumbnail by 90 counterclockwise.

Due to differences in music players and the limited standard abilities to communicate from one application to another, the music player will continue playing after the slide show is done, but it can be safely stopped by using the controls in the music player at any time.
