Math 10B / Fall 2013 / Briggs

Course: Math 10B (Calculus 2) Credit Hours: 4 Prerequisite: Math 10A or equivalent Catalog Description: Foundations of dierential and integral calculus of one variable. Functions, graphs, continuity, limits, derivatives, tangent lines. Applications with algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Introduction to the integral. Textbook: Calculus (5th Edition), Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum et al., published 2009 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Reading: Lectures tend to be more interesting when you read in advance. So I recommend that you at least skim each section in the text before attending lecture. Homework: There are seven homework assignments. Your lowest two homework scores will be dropped. Homework is due in section or in the dropboxes in the basement of AP & M. The homework will be late if not turned in by noon Friday (except Homework 6 which is due noon Wednesday 11/27), and late work will not receive credit. Exams: There will be two midterm and one nal exam. The nal is on Friday December 13 from 3pm to 6pm. You should check now that you have no schedule conicts with this. If you have a conict, you should enroll in a dierent 10B lecture. If you do better on the nal than on one of the midterms, or miss a midterm, your nal grade will replace that midterm score. There are no make-up exams. You may use one 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of handwritten notes, both sides, for each midterm exam. You may use two 8.5 by 11 inch sheets of handwritten notes for the nal exam. You may not use any other assistance on the exam including textbooks, electronic devices, and friends. Please bring a blue book to each exam. Better yet, bring a spare for karma or prot. Recording scores and returning work: Please learn which section you are enrolled in and put your name and section number on homework and exams. This helps the grader to record your scores, and also makes sure that your 1

TA receives your assignment and is then able to return it to you. Regrades: All graded work is returned in section or your TAs oce hours. Regrade requests need to be made before the work leaves the room. Grading: Your score is determined by the following percentages. I automatically apply whichever is to your advantage. Option A: 20% homework, 20% midterm 1, 20% midterm 2, 40% nal Option B: 20% homework, 20% best midterm, 60% nal The following scores guarantee you get the following letter grades. The scale may be more lenient (i.e. the course may be curved), but the grading will not be any harsher than: A+ 97-100 A 93-96.9 A - 90-92.9 B+ 87-89.9 B 83-86.9 B - 80-82.9 C+ 77-79.9 C 73-76.9 C - 70-72.9 D 60-69.9 If you take the course Pass / No Pass, then a score of at least 70 will guarantee a passing grade. Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.
