Main Library Building Project

Building works are being carried out in the Library over the summer period. This work will extend
the Library’s space to level 10 and create:

 900 student study spaces

 20 group study rooms
 a presentation practice room
 media booths
 lounge and reading spaces
 a variety of flexible spaces

These works are expected to be completed during Session 1 2009. Unfortunately, disruptions
occur with most building works and this project will be no exception.

Levels 3 & 4 will be refurbished and renovated for student space. The collection on Level 3 will be
packed up at the end of the year, some of which (Dewey decimal classification range 001 - 179:
see over for subject areas affected) will remain unavailable until Session 1, 2009. This will include
the print reference collection.

As the entire collection needs to be moved to expand into Level 10, there will be some disruption
to access to the remainder of the collection throughout the renovations.

The Library is well aware that projects such as this can cause significant inconvenience to users
and for this reason a number of plans have been put in place to minimise the disruption to users.
The Library will

 offer extended loan periods for material on level 3

 operate a stack service where appropriate
 obtain materials from other libraries through Document Services as required

The Library has extensive on-line resources covering all subject areas. Please visit
Library - Subject Guides on the Library web page to see what is available. These on-line resources
are available 24 x 7.

The Library web page will provide updates on the building project at regular intervals.

The Project in More Detail

The Library is expanding to Level 10 of the Main Library building. Level 10 will be renovated and
refurbished. The collection will be located on floors 3 - 10. Levels 3 & 4 will be completely re
configured and refurbished to create new student spaces including informal reading and lounge
areas, new group study rooms, a practice presentation room, increased individual study spaces
and media booths.

 Level 3 will be a building site from the end of the year until Session 1, 2009.
Computers currently on Level 3 will be relocated to Level 2.
 The south end of Level 4 will be blocked off as a building site early in 2009, but it is
envisaged the collection currently on Level 4 will have already been relocated to
higher floors.
 The microfilm / form collection will move to Level 4 housed in purpose built facilities
 The map collection will move to Level 3 equipped with printer / copier, appropriate
reading tables and housing facilities.
 New flooring will be laid on every floor except Level 2.
 Existing study rooms on floors 4 - 9 will be removed.
 Shelving will be re organised on floors 3 - 10.
