Pumpkin Fest set for October 12th

Weve been telling you all summer about how excited we are about the Fleischmanns First Pumpkin Patch. Well, we have a very healthy crop of both carving and eating pumpkins as well as mini gourds. At last count there were over forty carving pumpkins and at least that many of the eating kind. Of course, you can use both for jack-o-lanterns! Heres our schedule of fun filled events for the first event Pumpkin Fest. 10-12am pick ur own pumpkin at River Run. Priced by size $6/$10/$15 and some big ones for $20. If you dont want to pick ur own, we will harvest them for you and you can buy them at the Gazebo from 12-2pm Mini gourds will be for sale at both locations for $1 ea. 10-2pm Scarecrow making at the Gazebo- $10/scarecrow 10-2pm Pumpkin Decorating and face painting- free 10-2pm Doughnuts and apple juice/cider will be for sale. All homeowners and storekeepers, please plan to place a scarecrow in front of your house or store as early in the month of October as possible. You can always join us on October 12th and make a scarecrow then. We are collecting old jeans, flannel and plaid shirts, hats, gloves etc. Please bring clothing donations to the October 5th Fleischmanns First meeting or call Michelle at 254-5615 to arrange for drop off.

Mayor Pascarella Officiates at Wedding

When Daniel Silver and his fianc decided to get married in the Catskills they didnt have an officiate in mind. They selected the date and venue, invited their families and friends and searched around for someone to marry them. The wedding was to be in Roxbury but Roxbury does not have a mayor. A town supervisor does not have the power invested by the State of New York. But a mayor does and so they reached out to Mayor Todd Pascarella who performed the legal ceremony on the steps of the Skene Memorial Library on Friday morning, September 30th. With the legal matters out of the way, the couple had a private ceremony later in the day and partied with friends and family into the night. Congratulations to the happy couple and to Mayor Pascarella.

Fleischmanns History Day October 12

On Saturday, October 12, Fleischmanns continues the celebration of its 100th anniversary as an incorporated Village with a day full of events. See elsewhere in this issue for details of the Fleischmanns First Pumpkin Fest, and related happenings. At 11:30 AM, the unveiling of a new historic marker will take place in front of the Gazebo. Bill Birns will M.C. the ceremony.

Fleischmanns Factoid
The fancy passenger depot built by the Ulster & Delaware rail road for the Fleischmanns stop is long-since gone. But the building that remains, seen at the left on the postcard, served as the freight station for the U & D, and is actually the original combined passenger/ freight station built when the rail road first arrived in 1871; it was then known as the Rondout & Oswego. The last passenger train left Fleischmanns in 1954; the last freight train passed through in 1976.

Then at noon, Skene Library will host an hour-long program celebrating the history of the Village: Talking about the Old Days. It will feature brief talks by numerous speakers, touching on topics such as the first European settlers here, the coming of the rail road, the Fleischmann familys time here, early baseball, the hotels, growing up in Fleischmanns, the resurgence in the 50s, and the counter-culture in the 70s. The Museum will be open later that afternoon--its final day of the season!

Shape ote Singing Comes to Fleischmanns

Ben Fenton, Deputy Mayor of Fleischmanns and owner of River Run, is organizing a Shape Note singing program/classes beginning Monday, September 23rd for a week and culminating in a performance on Saturday September 28th. The same program was introduced in Roxbury earlier this summer to great success. So what is shape note singing? Singing schools were common in rural areas in the 19th and early to mid 20th century. Itinerant singing school teachers would come through during the laying by time: between planting and harvesting. Schools were for adults and children, and usually lasted 2 weeks. The shape note (or patent note) method was an extremely popular method of teaching people to read music. Instead of the notes all being round, the notes were triangles, circles, squares, and diamonds. Each shape has a different syllable: Fa for triangles (or flags), So for circles, La for squares, and Mi for diamonds. This method was so popular that there were over 300 tunebooks published using this method between 1801 and 1844. Many of the tunes that appeared in these books were written between 1780 and 1830 by the over 200 composers (or tunesmiths) living in New England and the Hudson Valley. The Sacred Harp tunebook was first published in Georgia in 1844, and is the last tunebook that is still in continuous use. Sacred Harp shape note singing is not a performance art, but a community activity. Even if you havent been to the singing school, its a great introduction to this music. Participants sit in a hollow square, with each part (treble, alto, tenor, and bass) facing each other. The director stands in the center and leads the group. The music is sung with no instruments or accompaniment. It is loud! You sing in a full chest voice, beating out the time and accenting the notes. It is not the sweet sound of hymns being sung, but a rich, unique sound like nothing youve ever heard. The singing school will be fashioned after singing schools of the early 19th century, using the shape note method. Ben Bath, ethnomusicologist and graduate of Bard College, will be leading the class. People who have no musical background are encouraged to attend. . The school will be September 23 27 from 6 8:30pm, with a pot luck and community singing on Saturday, September 28th from 5:30 8pm. The school will be held on Monday September 23 at the River Run Bed & Breakfast, 882 Main Street, Fleischmanns, and subsequent nights at the Fleischmanns Community Methodist Church, 904 Main Street, Fleischmanns. Children are welcome to participate with their parents. Cost for the week is $25 for adults, and $20 for children 12 and up (younger are freereading skills are helpful). Participants will receive a FREE copy of The Sacred Harp tunebook. The class is made possible by a grant from the OConnor Foundation. Howlween Parties Return

A new Fleischmanns tradition, begun last year, are the two celebrations for Halloween in our Village. The childrens party will take place from 3-5pm at 10 53 Main Street. Children are encouraged to wear costumes; there will be opportunities for making masks and participating in other fun activities. The party will culminate with a costume parade from the party to the Skene Memorial Library where participating children will receive a special surprise. Adults are invited to a costume party beginning at 7pm at the same location and are asked to bring appetizers/ desserts to pass. Its a BYOB with a modest entrance fee to cover the costs of the childrens party which is free to all.

Greetings Fleischmanns Community, It was great to see many of you and many folks from outside of Fleischmanns at the end of summer community picnic at the park. It was bittersweet to finally be able to hold a function in the park while knowing it is nowhere near restored from the flood damage two years ago.
