A Memorial Tribute And Obituary Of The Late William Douglas Harris

William Douglass Harris, age 86,
died Monday, September 27, 2004 at
his home in Macon, Georgia. Doug, as
he was known by his brethren, born
October 25, 1917 to the late Otey and
Dixie Harris, raised in Holtland,
Marshall County, Tennessee, lived in
Decatur, Alabama for 30 years and had
recently moved to Georgia. His mother
was a member of the Lord’s church at
his birth, but his father was not until a
few years later. During his childhood it
was planted in his mind by his parents
that if he went to college it would have
to be a Christian college to have their
support. As a result of this teaching he
and his oldest sister entered David
Lipscomb College and graduated in
1938 with a diploma. He graduated cum
laude with his B.A. Degree from
Harding College in 1940 and was
selected to Who’s Who in American
Colleges and Universities. In 1945 he
received a M.A. Degree in English and
History from the University of Georgia.
He also completed post-graduate stud-
ies in Greek from Harding Graduate
School of Religion in Memphis,
Tennessee.
Doug was a respected and loved
preacher, evangelist and writer with the
Church of Christ for over 60 years. He
served the Lord’s church in Texas,
Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.
Upon graduating from Harding, Doug
taught Bible at Dasher Bible School
now Georgia Christian School. He also
taught New Testament Greek for the
Alabama School of Religion. From
1978-1986, he served as Associate
Editor of the Caribbean Evangelist, a
paper edited by the late Ermon Bain
and circulated primarily in the
Caribbean Islands. After Brother Bain’s
failing health in 1988, Doug took on the
responsibility of Editor of the Caribbean
Messenger with the assistance of the
Beltline Road Church of Christ in
Decatur, Alabama, without such assis-
tance, Doug said, the paper would like-
ly have never re-published. In 1999,
the paper was in its 12th year of publi-
cation, and was circulated in bundles in
24 islands and two countries in South
America.
In March 2003 Doug appointed
Calvin Browne of Dallas, Texas to be
the new Editor of the Caribbean
Messenger, due to his failing health.
The paper is now circulated in every
Caribbean Island, South America,
England, Canada, Africa and to over
3000 individual Christians and church-
es in the United States. Complete files
of the Caribbean Messenger can be
found in the libraries of the Harding
Graduate School of Religion in
Memphis, Tennessee, and the
International Bible College in Florence,
Alabama. He also served as a staff
writer for the Voice of Truth
International. Dough was a member of
the North Macon Church of Christ in
Macon, Georgia.
He leaves to mourn his devoted
and beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret
Copeland Harris, whom he met during a
tent gospel meeting in Hahira. His chil-
dren, William Douglass Harris, Jr.,
Ladara Ranch of California, Richard
LaNier Harris of Nashville, Tennessee
and Peggy (Ben) Lee Harris White of
Macon, Georgia. His grandchildren,
Cindy (Dan) White Adrien, Forsyth and
Benjamin (Camille) P. White, Jr. in
Macon Georgia. His great-grandchil-
dren, Parker White, Ethan White, and
Olivia Adrien. His sister, Cornelia Lovell
of Columbia, Tennessee, and his broth-
er, Dennis Harris of Holtland,
Tennessee.
Visitation was held at the Hart’s
Mortuary on Tuesday, September 28th
from 5:00 P.M to 7:00 PM. A memorial
service was held at the Austinville
Church of Christ in Decatur, Alabama
on Thursday, September 30th from
11:00 A.M. Graveside services was
held in Dasher, Georgia on Saturday,
October 2, 2004 at 2:00 P.M.
Life for William Douglass Harris
has been an incredible journey from the
obscurity of being the son of a tenant
farmer parents to becoming a gospel
preacher, elder in the Lord’s church,
and editor of a gospel paper. His life
journey has included preaching for
seven congregations in local work,
evangelizing in thirteen states of the
USA, two tours of Bible lands, teaching
New Testament Greek in the Alabama
Christian School of Religion, and mak-
ing over twenty trips to the Caribbean
islands for evangelistic efforts and lec-
tureships.
No notoriety is claimed, because there
is none. I attribute all of my accomplish-
ments, which I considered as minimal
compared to many others, for the cause
of Christ to God’s unfathomable grace
and to the devotion of my beloved wife,
family, and many good brethren. And
for whatever credit there is, I would like
to lay it all at the feet of Jesus.

In one of his book “Focus on the
fundamentals of the Faith,” Doug takes
us back to the scriptures for the simple,
easy to understand truths that are to be
found there. In a time in which there is
so much false teaching, we need, we
must , go back to the Bible itself for
answers to religious questions: Why
believe in God? Who is Jesus? Who
wrote the Bible? What church do we
read about in the Bible? How can one
be Saved? What does God require in
Worship? Why live the Christian Life?
and many other similar questions. Why
would we go to man, which is generally
done? Man is the sinner who needs
guidance and direction instead of pre-
suming to give it. We can see the
resulting predicament looking at all of
the denominational groups and the
countless erroneous doctrines that
have been espoused by man. Isn’t it
time to wipe the slate clean and go back
to the original source, God’s word, for
the answers and solutions to all reli-
gious questions and man’s problems?
With this in mind, I, J.C. Choate, com-
mend brother Harris’ book to you and
encourage you to share it with your
neighbors and friends.

Doug Harris
He believed in simplicity, plain-
ness, honesty and fairness to all.
He believed and trusted the word of
God completely and was a worthy
example in his life and teaching.
Brother Harris will be missed
in his own country. He will certainly
be missed by many of us here in
the Caribbean who knew him.
Those who have attended the
Caribbean lectureship over the
years and got to know him will cer-
tainly notice his absence. He will
also be missed in the community in
which he lived. His family members
will miss him. The church of Christ,
God's greatest institution on earth,
will miss him. This is by far the most
important place where he will be
missed, because of the people
whom she embraces, God's people
whom brother Harris loved dearly.
Brother Harris was a faithful
soldier in the Lord's army. He faith-
fully served the Lord as a Christian
and as a gospel preacher. His ded-
ication, commitment and exemplary
attitude to the Lord's cause cannot
be over emphasized. "Know ye this
day that a great man in the Lord's
church has fallen, Douglas Harris."

Hurricane Season 2004
Hurricane Season 2004 went out fighting.
On the last day "Otto" was named as the
15th storm of the busy season. We have
just completed a seven Island trip in 11
days. Dinah is to be praised for her dedi-
cation and trust. I do not know too many
women who would crawl back in a single
engine plane after a close call, and fly
across the waters. We arrived in Abaco
Thanksgiving Day. This is not a holiday in
the Bahamas, but Greta invited us to her
home on Thursday for a lovely
"Thanksgiving Day Dinner" in our honor.
The lobster stuffing was a standout in the
delightful meal and fellowship. Friday we
were invited out again for a meal of turkey
wings and rice. We are so touched by the
giving attitude of the brethren who have
been hit so hard with the storms. There
were tears all around as we stood in the liv-
ing room holding hands and Dave led us in
a special prayer for our safety and reunion.
We took out a full load of Bibles and World
Bibles To Abaco-Bahamas
Bible School materials along with some
personal items Dinah had made as house
warming gifts for Lincoln, Jason and
Katrinka. We spent the first two days bank-
ing, greeting the brethren in Abaco, hand-
ing out funds to brethren still struggling,
and cleaning up mold in our little room. We
still have ceiling damage to repair and
some of our clothes "aren't no more good
as they say in the Islands". The Abaco
church building still has a broken window
and must have a complete new roof. We
are waiting for the last of the building sup-
plies to be shipped out of Florida. We have
no idea when they will be available. One of
the big jokes in the ravaged areas is the
man walking into the lumber yard and
requesting shingles of a "certain color".
Blue tarps still cover most homes in the
affected Islands. Many families have
moved into crowded conditions with family
members.
Mission Day in Freeport
Saturday we flew to Freeport with a load of
books, WBS, and radio tapes. The
brethren there insisted on hosting the 6th
Annual Mission Day for the Bahamas in
spite of hurricane damage. We were met
by the two preachers and Brother
Thompson who drove the Church bus that
broke down later that day. The salt water
had eaten out the bearings. We are so
thankful for the wonderful relationship
enjoyed by all of the brethren in the
Islands. Abaco brought a total of 31 to the
Mission Day. Twenty-eight of them got up
early on Sunday morning, drove more than
an hour to the north of Abaco, took a rough
charter boat ride across to the east end of
Far & Near
Grand Bahamas, and the brethren from
Freeport met them with vans for the hour
and a half trip to the building. Each person
paid $70 for the trip. They returned in the
late afternoon in time for evening services
in Marsh Harbour. Several of those who
came were not Christians at the time, but
were studying. Two of them have been
baptized in Abaco since the trip. I was hon-
ored to be the "Key Note" speaker at the
event. The Church in Freeport presented
us with a beautiful "Memory Candle" to
burn when the light goes out again. There
were 242 in attendance at the Mission Day.
Back in Marsh Harbour we had a lovely
devotion on Sunday evening and were
joined by Joe and Miriam Holland who is
an elder at the congregation in West Palm
Beach. This congregation has helped
Marsh Harbour since the hurricanes. The
conducted a VBS there last summer and
two groups of men were sent out to work
on a container of supplies for the roof along
with clothes etc. Dinah and I really enjoyed
getting to know Joe and Miriam better.
They were also present at Mission Day.
The ladies prepared a wonderful meal for
all of us. Karen Moss was serving peas
and carrots. I am told that these arrived in
great abundance with the 38,000 lbs. ship-
ment of food and water.
Assisting Rock Sound
Early Tuesday morning we took off under grey
skies to be with Lincoln in Rock Sound
Eleuthera. We had seen him at the Mission Day,
but had little time to visit. He had a ride waiting
for us and we unloaded his supplies including
new song books. The afternoon was spent with
him at his new house. We are so thankful to the
brethren in Wynne, Arkansas for the generous
way they have helped this wonderful man. He
has preached in Eleuthera for 16 years. Sister
Allen in Texas gave him his electric wheel chair
several years ago and the brethren in Wynne
have furnished his home with beautiful furniture.
Dinah had intended to hang paintings and pho-
tos that she had framed in the right colors, but
ended up putting them under his bed until more
of the finish work can be done. Lincoln like all of
us is waiting for supplies from Florida to com-
plete the repair work on the damaged church
building. We visited some of the brethren and
retired for an early start to Nassau. Internet
Services have been very difficult in the Islands
since the Hurricanes. If you have not heard from
Lincoln or gotten his reports, please be patient. I
was able to communicate only a few times from
some of the 7 Islands we visited. Hopefully, I am
connected again in Marsh Harbour with a new
company. Lincoln is preparing for the Annual
Junkanoo celebration on December 26th. This
year he has many helping him with a new theme.
"When the Books were Opened". This will fea-
ture scripture and the "Rushers" will be handing
out tracts on Drug and Alcohol. The brethren
touched our hearts when they showed us the
hospital bracelet taken from "Nancy" when she
last was released. She is a wonderful Christian
lady in Arkansas who has done much for the
Rock Sound Church. They have the bracelet to
remind them to pray for her daily as she strug-
gles with cancer. She missed the summer trip to
Eleuthera this year.

This verse resounds
with contentment,
power and resolve.
Whenever I am
faced with insur-
mountable obstacles
that seem impossi-
ble, Christ, through
his written word gives me the ability to
overcome. If a young Christian were to
study this verse in the manner in which it
is delivered, there would be no need for
doubts, no need for insecurity, and no
need for fear which breaks down faith in
the Most High. For nothing is impossible
with God according to Luke 18:27: And
he said, the things which are impossible
with men, are possible with God. And,
Mark 10:27: And Jesus looking upon
them saith, with men it is impossible, but
not with God: for with God all things are
possible.
The young Christian who suffers
from insecurity and lacks in self-control
may be an easy target for dark influential
forces. This person will be easily influ-
enced by others with ill repute reputa-
tions, and may unknowingly do a back
flip into the enemy's camp that may once
again endanger the soul. Indeed, peer
pressure can be destructible. When the
body of Christ is faced with such mem-
bers these members should not be
shunned or disregarded by the church in
any way. Rather, we should help the
weak. Romans 15:1: We then that are
strong ought to bear the infirmities of the
weak, and not to please ourselves. 1
Thessalonians 5:14: Now we exhort
you, brethren, warn them that are unruly,
spiritual nature at all times; that is, read-
ing the Bible, attending church activities,
being in the company of fellow members
and practicing to speak wholesomely.
They should be encouraged to
speak and walk the faith, being exam-
ples of the believers in word and in
deed. One must be mindful as a
Christian that it is his job to save souls
and not to drive souls away or encour-
age them in their sinful nature. We must
be aware that when we give in to our
"friends" or others who pressure us, that
we are inadvertently driving them away
from Christ when we should be bringing
them in. We should lead them in and not
allow them to direct us out. No one who
claims to follow Christ will want to have
the blood of another's soul on his hands.
In the end, we will have no one to blame
but ourselves. Certainly, God cannot be
blamed for God does not tempt us,
according to James 1:13: Let no man
say when he is tempted, I am tempted of
God: for God cannot be tempted with
evil, neither tempteth he any man:
Rather, He always makes a way out for
us whenever we are presented with
temptations, according to 1 Corinthians
10:13. There hath no temptation taken
you but such as is common to man: but
God is faithful, who will not suffer you to
be tempted above that ye are able; but
will with the temptation also make a way
to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Therefore, the onus is on us to
always think before speaking and acting.
Study God’s word for wisdom and think
before speaking or acting. One cannot
do this on one's own, God’s written word
for Christians must be the guide in what-
ever one does or says. Usually, when
Christians give in to temptations it is
because they forgot God’s written word

Ross from Rosenburg, Texas.The loss of
the engine in the plane and the Hurricanes
delayed the arrival, but not the joy of the
gift. Suzette wants to sew for her three chil-
dren. This new little congregation is having
an average attendance of about 18. They
are effectively sharing WBS materials with
many. We got more fuel for the plane and
flew south to Deadman's Cay, Long Island.
We were met by Erik ( a brother) who had
also prepared a great meal of pea soup and
rice. We delivered song books and money
to the congregation. Dinah said she was
overwhelmed by the gratitude of the
brethren. We left enough for them to repair
She cried and told Dinah that we were the M
only ones to help her. We often find those
who have slipped between the cracks. .. I
wish that each of you could have been with
us as we delivered the bounty of your love
to those recovering in the Islands. We are
just so thankful to be Christians and a part
of such a wonderful fellowship. If you would
