Research

Lecturer in the Dynamics Research Group Research interests touch on: Structural Dynamics; Structural Health Monitoring (SHM); Verication and Validation (V&V); System Identication (SID).

Reasons for my interest in Signal Processing

Research: Non-linear System ID; Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. But primarily practical.

Summary

Motivation
What is Signal Processing? Signal processing is the name given to the procedures used on measured data to reveal the information contained in the measurements. These procedures essentially rely on various transformations that are mathematically based and which are implemented using digital techniques. The wide availability of software to carry out digital signal processing (DSP) with such ease now pervades all areas of science, engineering, medicine and beyond. Fundamentals of Signal Processing for Sound and Vibration Engineers, K. Shin & J.K. Hammond (2008)

If signal processing is so pervasive and powerful software is widely available, why study it? This ease can sometimes result in the analyst using the wrong tools - or interpreting results incorrectly because of a lack of appreciation or understanding of the assumptions or limitations of the method employed. Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to: 1. Understand the importance of signal processing and state-of-the-art instrumentation in modern Mechanical Engineering. 2. Apply the discrete-time Fourier transform to deterministic signals. 3. Appreciate the need for random signal analysis and apply statistical procedures to characterise the behaviour of random sequences. 4. Understand and implement lter techniques for Engineering applications. 5. Appreciate the role of the digital for data acquisition and processing of signals.

Exams and Assessment

Assessment will be a 2 hour exam at the end of the course. The exam consists of:

Part A: 40 marks. Compulsory section testing broad knowledge. Part B: 60 marks. Answer 3 from 5 questions on specic topics.

There is no continuously assessed component. The practical exercise will not be assessed, but will help you understand the material covered. For doctoral students:

Happy for anyone to attend. The simplest way to gain credit for DDP is to attend the exam. Happy to discuss other options.

Summary

Expectations
You are all Masters or Doctoral Level students I will provide notes, a (limited) number of tutorial sheets, example data, tutorial classes and an example past paper. But it is down to you to make use of them. What I expect is that you work on (some of) the tutorial problems; challenge me (and your classmates) in a constructive way; and make use of the notes and recommended literature. Ultimately, what you take away from this course depends on your attitude, what you are willing to bring and share. I cannot force you to study something, so do it for your own benet, not for me.
