This is one of my favorite warm-ups. I use it to work on note accuracy, tongue strength, mental concentration, and finger speed.

It is also great for ear training chords. Pattern: (V7) F, A, C, Eb, C, A (V7) F, A, C, Eb, C, A (I) F, Bb, D, F, D, Bb (I) F, Bb, D, F, D, Bb (V7) F, A, C, Eb, C, A (V7) F, A, C, Eb, C, A (I) Bb, F, D, Bb, F, D, (I) Bb...... **repeat down a halfstep** First, you must learn the pattern and get it solid at a slowish tempo. Here I play it at 148 (one triplet per beat) which really pushes my tongue endurance and my concentration. I usually run this through once at a slower tempo (which is uploaded as another video) and then as fast as my tongue can handle and still make it through to the end. At the initial slow tempo, focus on getting as even of a sound on each note as possible. Consistency of attack is another thing to watch for. Stay in the zone and don't quit; plow through the whole exercise even if you screw up. Concentrate! At this faster tempo, you have to clear your mind and stay in the game. I feel that it should be sloppy to a certain extent, because you're really pushing your tongue and finger speed/coordination to the limit. This is essential. Push yourself. A certain portion of your practice time should be spent in your comfort zone, but a good chunk of it should be right at the edge of your abilities.
