Indian Standard
DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES RELATING TO WOOD BASED PANEL MATERIALS
0. F O R E W O R D 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 28 May 1987, after the draft finalized by the Wood Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council. 0.2 The effective utilization of wood based panel materials calls for rationalization of their dimensions which brings in uniformity, interchangeability and minimizes wastage. With this in view, this standard has been brought out to guide the industry, recommending various dimensions of wood based panel products and the tolerances with which these measurements are to be taken. 0.3 This edition 1.3 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (May 1990), Amendment No. 2 (October 1992) and Amendment No. 3 (March 2003). Side bar indicates modification of the text as the result of incorporation of the amendments. 0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2 - 1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers the dimensions, such as length, width and thickness, tolerances and method of measurement for wood based panel materials. 1.2 The wood based panels considered are plywood, blockboard, hard-board, fibre insulation board, particle board, veneered particle board, particle board for insulation and high density particle board which are covered in various Indian standard specifications given in Appendix A. 2. TERMINOLOGY 2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS : 707 1976 shall apply.
*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). Glossary of terms applicable to timber technology and utilization ( second revision ).

IS : 12049 - 1987 2.1 The first dimension shall represent the length, the second width and the third thickness. In the case of plywood, blockboard and veneered particle board, the dimension parallel to the grain of the face is taken as the length. 3. DIMENSIONS 3.1 Plywood 3.1.1 Size Plywood panels shall be of the sizes specified below : Length Width mm mm 2 400 1 200 2 100 1 200 2 100 900 1 800 1 200 1 800 900 3.1.2 Thickness The thicknesses shall be as given in the specifications listed in A-1.1. 3.2 Hardboard 3.2.1 Size Hardboards shall be of the sizes specified below : Length Width mm mm 4 800 3 600 3 000 2 400 2 100 2 100 1 800 1 800 1 200 1 200 1 200 1 200 1 200 1 200 900 1 200 900 1 200
