GENERAL INFORMATION

Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana (established in 1956), is one of the oldest and a premier Engineering Institute of India. The foundation stone of the college was laid by Honorable Dr. Rajendra Prasad Ji, President of India on 8th April, 1956. All the under-graduate courses of this institute are accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA, AICTE) New Delhi. GNDEC is now an autonomous college under UGC act. The ISO-9001:2000 certified institution has seven B.Tech. courses, thirteen AICTE approved post- graduate courses besides being a QIP centre for PhD. Mechanical Engineering Department was established in 1957 and is currently offering B.Tech. (Mech. Engg.), M.Tech. (Prod. Engg.), M.Tech. (Ind. Engg.) and PhD courses. The institute is set up on 88 acres of sprawling pristine land on Ludhiana- Malerkotla state highway and is 7km from the railway station, 6km from Main Bus Stand and 15km from the Airport. Ludhiana is well connected by roads and is located at 300 km from New Delhi, 90 km from Chandigarh, 150 km from Amritsar. By train Ludhiana is connected to New Delhi and daily three Shatabdi’s takes 4 hours for

this journey. Apart from Shatabdi’s many superfast trains also connect Ludhiana with other parts of India. Air India operates three days a week (Mon, Wed, and Fri) flight connecting Ludhiana to New Delhi. The weather in the month of Oct/Nov in Ludhiana is pleasant (16°C to 26°C).

INTRODUCTION

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a numerical and computer-based technique

of solving a variety of practical engineering problems involving stress analysis, fluid flow, heat transfer, vibrations, etc. It is recognized by developers and users as one of the most powerful numerical analysis tools ever devised to analyze complex

.

problems of engineering. The underlying theory of the method is now well established, with many books and courses providing adequate explanations of the theory. However, most people using the method, via commercial software or in- house codes, do not often understand the method as applied to engineering problems, especially in generating output data and

interpreting the results. As participants are expected from all over India, this course would provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to interact with one another and discuss problems and solutions of

mutual interest. The basics of the Finite Element Method (FEM) will be discussed at length in this introductory course. Applicability of the method and different types of formulation procedures will be explained. Complete step-by-step details will be presented for typical one, two and three - dimensional analyses. Moreover, FEM formulations will be elaborated for fields of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Computer implementation of the methods and use of various packages will be introduced. Course notes and analysis software’s will enable the participants to perform routine analyses.

.

At the end of the course, the participants may be in a position to identify and select appropriate FEM methodologies for their specific conditions.
