Fleischmanns Village turns 100 in 2013

Mayor Pascarella announced at the January 2013 Fleischmanns First monthly meeting that he would be appointing a committee to plan celebrations this year in honor of Fleischmanns 100th anniversary. Prior to 1913, the hamlet of Griffins Corners located to the east of Bridge Street and Fleischmanns, to the west of Bridge Street, functioned as separate entities. When the Fleischmanns family decided to leave the area after many years of enjoying the mountains and much sought after relief from urban summer heat and humidity, they deeded five acres of their land to what became the newly incorporated Village of Fleischmanns and so named as thanks for their generous gift. Now 100 years later, we are renovating Fleischmanns Park and hope to see, shortly, a state of the art playground and tennis center. Fleischmanns has a new vitality as witnessed by the growing number of retail businesses on Main Street. In celebration of the 100th year, Fleischmanns Flyer will publish a monthly Fleischmanns Factoids courtesy of the Museum of Memories. Although the actual naming and formal creation of the Village of Fleischmanns took place in 1913, a Fleischmanns Post Office already existed and had been established in 1888. For over 25 years, there were two post offices in very close proximity to one another, one called "Fleischmanns" and the other "Griffin Corners." In 1914 the "Fleischmanns" office was closed, and in 1915 the Griffin Corners Post Office was renamed "Fleischmanns". Below are examples of early 20th century Fleischmanns and Griffin Corners post marks. Griffin Corners Post Mark Fleischmanns Post Mark

Emerging Fleischmanns Business Group

Last spring a Fleischmanns retailer came to a Fleischmanns First monthly meeting seeking assistance for advertising signage on Route 28. It was suggested that the business owners on Main Street get together to determine what they would need to do to apply to DOT for signage. At the August monthly meeting, Fleischmanns First members decided to sponsor a networking event for business owners in the 12430 area. That event was held on November 8th when over 20 people attended and there was a lively discussion of interesting marketing ideas for the Main Street stores. Subsequently two business owners represented Fleischmanns First at a December meeting hosted by the Central Catskill Chamber of Commerce at the new E-center in Margaretville. Attendees of the areas local business groups were meeting to discuss how our villages could work together for the betterment of the overall community. There was a clear message of encouragement of local business owners to work together and discuss their mutual concerns. Armed with this mantra, Gloria Zola Mulloy convened a meeting of Fleischmanns Main Street business owners at Sams Country Store on Saturday, January 3rd. They were joined by Peg Ellsworth of the Mark Project. Topics of discussion centered on how to make the Village more attractive to consumers. They are looking into marketing strategies to attract consumers and overall initiative to further beautify the Village. They intend to meet regularly and work to accomplish clear goals and objectives. Anyone interested in attending the next meeting should contact Gloria Mulloy at 254-4998.

Fleischmanns Park Presentation

On Saturday February 2nd, the 5th Fleischmanns First Forum will be held at La Cabana restaurant at 10:00 a.m. It will be devoted to bringing the village and wider community up-to-date on the exciting plans to rebuild the park's tennis courts and children's playground. 2013 is the centennial of Julius Fleischmanns donation of the land for the village park. What better way to commemorate the park's birth than to celebrate its rebirth after the flood. Mayor Todd Pascarella will speak to the vision for Fleischmanns Park. Sindy Becker will discuss plans for the new tennis courts and the goal to complete the building of the courts this summer, primetime for tennis. For many years, Fleischmanns tennis courts have drawn avid tennis players from Delaware and Ulster County. The Fleischmanns Open and more recently the Catskill Open have meant an influx of tennis players and fans the first weekend of August to our Village. Likewise, if you build it, a state of the art playground, they will come! Kathleen Rosted and Jeanine Pascarella will present and discuss plans for the playground which will serve the needs of all members of the community and draw children and adults from surrounding communities to the park and the Village as well. Peg Ellsworth, Executive Director of the MARK project, will discuss the funding already in hand as well as the funding still to be raised for both projects and the strategy to ensure that Fleischmanns Park is once again the recreational center of the Village We look forward to seeing you at La Cabana on Saturday, February 2nd at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome and invited to attend and participate. Your village needs you! Admission is free - refreshments served.

Letter from Mayor Pascarella..

Dear Fleischmanns Community, Winter is upon us and it is good to finally see some snow. Hopefully this means business will be much better this year than last for a change and that the whole year of 2013 will be a good one for everyone. Speaking of 2013, it is the centennial anniversary of the Village of Fleischmanns being renamed in honor of the family that donated our wonderful park. This year and especially this summer will be one of great celebration as we mark this special milestone by paying homage to our history and embark on building an even brighter future. Please stay safe in these winter storms and keep an eye out for your neighbor, particularly the elderly, especially with the terrible flu that is going around. Sincerely, Todd Pascarella, Mayor
