WELCOME TO PEACE WITH CHRIST

LUTHERAN CHURCH!

We give thanks to God that you are joining us today!

Many of our guests are seeking a home church where they
can be part of the Fellowship of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Peace with Christ is a congregation that is a family not an
“organization”. We are small enough to allow people to
know each other by name, and yet large enough to offer
opportunities for growth and service. What we “specialize”
in is not programs or productions, but simply The Gospel
of Our Lord Jesus. Christ, His Word, and the Cross are
what provide the foundation for faith and ministry. If you
are interested in learning more about Peace With Christ
Lutheran Church, please call the church office at 226-4721.
Pastor Patrick would welcome the opportunity to visit with
you personally.

THE TIME before the service may be used for prayer and
preparation. Read through the worship bulletin and familiarize
yourself with the service. A few moments spent this way will help
make the service more meaningful.

NEXT WEEK’S LUTHERAN HOUR MESSAGE:

Rev. Reed Lessing, associate professor of exegetical theology at
Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. (Isaiah 44:5) Listen to The Lutheran
Hour Message on KOA, Denver (AM850) at 6:00 a.m. and KFKA,
Greeley (AM1310) at 9:30 a.m.

tor of Curriculum at Lutheran High North, Houston
and Adjunct Professor at Concordia University,
Texas.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

POWER AND PRIMACY OF THE POPE
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

We will show from the Gospel that the Roman bishop is not
above other bishops and pastors by divine right.

I. Christ clearly bans lordship among the apostles. This was

the very question: When Christ spoke of His passion, the apos-
tles were disputing over who should be the head of the others,
and, as it were, the vicar of the absent Christ. Christ rebukes
this error of the apostles and teaches that there shall not be
lordship or superiority among them. Instead, the apostles
would be sent forth as equals to the common ministry of the
Gospel. So, He says, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lord-
ship over them, and those in authority over them are called
benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest
among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one
who serves" (Luke 22:25-26).

II. When Christ, places a little child in their midst, He is teach-

ing the same thing by parable. Just as a child neither takes nor
seeks sovereignty for himself, so this shows that there is not
to be sovereignty among ministers.

III. Christ sends forth His disciples without any distinction . He

says, "As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you."
He says that He sends them individually in the same way He
Himself was sent [John 12:44-50]. He grants no one a privi-
lege or lordship above the rest. (paragraphs 7-9)

Prayer and Study

Date: September 20 - September 26

Luther Quote: “Faith can see in the dark, where nothing what-
ever is visible; it feels where nothing is to be felt. Thus we also
believe in the Lord Christ—believe that He is sitting at the right
hand of the Almighty Father above and so rules that He has all
creatures in His hand and works everything in us. We do not see
this, nor do we feel it; yet through faith the heart sees it as surely
as if it were looking at it with bodily eyes.”

Bible readings for the week:

Sunday: Psalm 104; Song of Solomon 5-8

Monday: Psalm 105; Jeremiah 1-3
Tuesday: Psalm 106; Jeremiah 4-6
Wednesday: Psalm 107; Jeremiah 7-9
Thursday: Psalm 108; Jeremiah 10-12
Friday: Psalm 109; Jeremiah 13-15
Saturday: Psalm 110; Jeremiah 16-18

Ablaze! Praise — September 16-30

The Ablaze! movement invites all Lutheran Christians around the
world to join in the effort to reach 100 million unreached or un-
committed people with the Gospel by 2017, the 500th anniversary
of the Gospel.

Daily Prayers:

Sunday: For the ongoing partnership with Lutheran schools through

the Ablaze! Bible Listening Program and other intentional outreach ef-
forts. Unchurched students in Lutheran schools are a vast mission field!
11

Monday: For the 35 districts of the LCMS as they become involved

in the Ablaze! movement in specific ways. May they discern how they
can continue to reach out to the communities surrounding their congre-
gations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Tuesday: With thanks for the opportunity that the Holy Spirit gave
Janice Wood and other members of Christ the Rock Lutheran Church in
Rockford, Ill., to share the Gospel with community members using the
“Journey to the Cross” resource.

Wednesday: That the Lord would continue to build up faith in the

students who heard the Gospel through Alice Klement of Shepherd of
the Hills Lutheran Church, San Antonio, Texas, and other members of
her short-term mission them. They taught at a school in The Lutheran
Church—Hong Kong Synod while serving on a short-term mission trip
in Hong Kong through LCMS World Mission.

Thursday: For continued nurturing of faith in the heart and mind of

Bebe Cofer’s grandson. Bebe is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church
in Panama City Beach, Fla., and shared the Gospel with her 13-year-old
grandson in Georgia while on vacation.

Friday: With thanksgiving for the witness of a member of St. Paul

Lutheran Church in Atlanta, Ga. Pastor Daniel Schepman shared, “This
airline flight attendant faithfully wears her ‘salvation story’ bracelet as
she works. On a regular basis, she is asked about the bracelet. She ex-
plains the bracelet, hands the individual a card with a written explana-
tion about the bracelet, and then gives the bracelet to them.”

Saturday: With praise to the Holy Spirit for the fruit that years of
faithful sharing yielded in the heart of Valerie Brown’s friend. Valerie
faithfully shared the Gospel through Christian materials, answered fol-
low-up questions, and led her inquiring friend to a pastor. The Holy
Spirit was at work! Valerie’s friend now attends church and has re-
ceived Jesus as her Lord and Savior.
