Peace Fleece Lacy Beret

By Deb Burger Crochet: the Extraordinary Realm This cute hat works up fast, and makes a fashion statement with simple stitches. Two Peace Fleece yarns are used: Worsted in Baku Black, and in Bedouin Blue. The blue yarn is slightly heavier in weight, somewhere between true worsted and slightly chunky. Materials: 1 skein each of Peace Fleece worsted Baku Black and Bedouin Blue, although this pattern only uses a little more than half of each skein. Size US H or I crochet hook Gauge: In dc, with black yarn, 14 stitches = 4 in. 5 rows =4 inches. In fpdc rib stitch, with blue yarn, 7 ridges unstretched= 4 inches, 6 rows =4Gauge does not need to be exact for this pattern, but being close to gauge will ensure proper fit. Finished, unstretched circumference is approx. 20, hat stretches to fit most head sizes. Special Stitches: Front Post dc (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook from front to back around post of next dc, pulling post of stitch toward the front of the work (raising the stitch). Yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through two loops on hook, yo and draw through two loops on hook. Back Post dc (bpdc): Yarn over, insert hook from back to front around post of next dc, pushing post toward back of work, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through two loops on hook, yo and draw through two loops on hook. Rib stitch is formed by alternating one fpdc with one bpdc. In the following rows, fpdc stitches are worked around fpdc, and bpdc stitches are worked around bpdc, creating the rib pattern. Shell: *sc in space between 2nd and 3rd dc of next group of stitches. Work 5 dc in next space between two hdc, that is, between the last stitch of one group and the first stitch of the next. Instructions: Do not turn at end of rounds, unless specifically instructed to. Stitch count for completed rounds appear in brackets [ ] at end of round instruction. With heavier blue yarn, ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring. Round 1ch 4 (hdc in ring, ch 1) 5 times. Sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch. [6 spaces made] Round 2sl st into next chain space or arch (ch sp). Sc in same sp; (ch 5 ,sc in next sp) 5 times. Ch 2, dc in 1st sc to join. [6 ch sp formed, working yarn is at peak of 6th arch] Round 3(ch 5, sc in next ch sp)5 times. Ch 5, sl st in top of 1st ch sp to join. Round 4ch 3, 6 dc ni first ch sp. (7 dc in next ch sp) around. Join w/ a sl st in top of beginning ch 3. [ 42 dc made, counting beginning ch 3 as a stitch6 groups of dc, each consisting of 7 dcs] Round 5(ch 5, sc in 4th dc of next group, ch 5, sc in space between last dc of group and first dc of next group) around. Join w/ a sl st in first ch of first ch sp. [12 ch sp made] Round 6ch 1. In each arch work the following: (hdc, 4dc, hdc) around. Join with a sl st in ch 1 sp. Fasten off blue yarn. [12 groups of stitches] Round 7Attach black yarn with a sc between 2nd and 3rd dc of next group. Work a 5dc shell between next 2 hdc. (sc between 2nd and 3rd dc of next group, shell between next 2 hdc) around. Join with a sl st in first sc. [12 shells made] Round 8ch 3, dc in each st around. Join in top of ch 3. TURN work, and work the next row on the wrong side. This provides shaping. [72 dc] Round 9Wrong Side Rowch 3 dc in each dc around. Join, TURN. Round 10Right Side rowch 3 dc in each dc around. Join. . TURN. Round 11Wrong Side rowch 3. dc in each dc around. Join. TURN. Fasten off Black yarn. Join Blue yarn with a sl st. in any stitch. Round 12 Ch 3. (fpdc in next st; bpdc in next st) around. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Do Not Turn. Rounds 13 and 14repeat Round 12, stacking post stitches to form ribbing. At end of Round 14, fasten off. Weave in all yarn ends.
