Part 4, General Metal Loss Level 1 Assessment Point Thickness Readings

STEP 1: Determine the minimum required thickness, tmin. Paragraph 4.4.2.1.a

Cylindrical Shell: Paragraph A.3.4

Minimum Required Thickness from Circumferential Stress, [tmin_C]: = ( P * R ) / ( S * E - 0.6 * P ) = ( 325.000 * 14.703 )/( 17100.000 * 1.000 - 0.6 * 325.000 ) = 0.283 in.

Minimum Required Thickness from Circumferential Stress, [tmin_L]: = ( P * R ) / ( 2 * S * E + 0.4 * P ) = ( 325.000 * 14.703 )/ ( 2 * 17100.000 * 1.000 + 0.4 * 325.000 ) = 0.139 in.

Minimum Required Thickness, [tmin]: = max( tmin_C, tmin_L ) = max ( 0.283 , 0.139 ) = 0.283 in.

STEP 2 - Take point thickness reading data and determine minimum measured thickness and average measured thickness. Paragraph 4.4.2.1.b

Minimum Measured Thickness, [tmm]: = 0.360 in.

PV Elite 2013 Licensee: SAIPEM S.P.A. FileName : API579 ---------------------------------------API-579 Calculations : Step: 8 3:10p Dec 16,2013
Average Measured Thickness, [tam]: = Sum of points / N = 5.400/15 = 0.360 in.

Metal Loss, [LOSS]: = tnom - tam = 0.500 - 0.360 = 0.140 in.

STEP 3 - Determine viability of the point thickness readings through the coefficient of variance (standard deviation) check. Paragraph 4.4.2.1.c

Sum of Squares, [S]: = SUM(trd, i - tam)2 = 0.000 sq.in.

Coefficient of Variation, [COV]: = ( 1 / tam )( S / ( N - 1 ) )0.5 = ( 1/0.360 )( 0.000/( 15 - 1 ) )0.5 = 0.000

Coefficient of Variation < 10% 0.000 < 0.100 PASSED

The coefficient of variation is within the recommended values.

STEP 4 - Level 1 Criteria per Table 4.4 Paragraph 4.4.2.1.d

Minimum Thickness Criterion

PV Elite 2013 Licensee: SAIPEM S.P.A. FileName : API579 ---------------------------------------API-579 Calculations : Step: 8 3:10p Dec 16,2013
Table 4.4

Limiting Thickness [t_lim]: = max( 0.2 * tnom, 0.1 in.) = max( 0.2 * 0.500 , 0.1 ) = 0.100 in.

( tmm - FCA ) >= max ( 0.5 * tmin, t_lim )

0.297 >= 0.141 PASSED

The minimum thickness criterion passed.

Average Measured Thickness Criterion Table 4.4

(tam - FCA) >= tmin (0.360 - 0.063 ) >= 0.283

PASSED

The average measured thickness criterion passed.

Maximum Allowable Working Pressure Criterion: Table 4.4

Note: Level 1 calculations assume that all supplemental loads are negligible. Paragraph 4.4.1.2.a.

Corroded Wall Thickness based on tam [tamr]: = tam - FCA = 0.360 - 0.063

PV Elite 2013 Licensee: SAIPEM S.P.A. FileName : API579 ---------------------------------------API-579 Calculations : Step: 8 3:10p Dec 16,2013
= 0.297 in.

Cylindrical Shell: Paragraph A.3.4

Maximum Allowable Working Pressure from Circumferential Stress [MAWPr_C]: = ( S * E * tamr ) / ( R + 0.6 * tamr ) - Pstatic = ( 17100.000 * 1.000 * 0.297 )/( 14.703 + 0.6 * 0.297 ) - 0.000 = 341.283 psig

Maximum Allowable Working Pressure from Longitudinal Stress [MAWPr_L]: = ( 2 * S * E * tamr ) / ( R - 0.4 * tamr ) = ( 2 * 17100.000 * 1.000 * 0.297 )/ ( 14.703 - 0.4 * 0.297 ) = 696.466 psig

Permissible Maximum Allowable Working Pressure [MAWPr]: = min( MAWPr_C, MAWPr_L ) = min( 341.283 , 696.466 ) = 341.283 psig

Determining the minimum MAWP, where tmin is the wall thickness calculated in STEP 1:

Cylindrical Shell: Paragraph A.3.4

MAWP based on stresses in the circumferential direction, [MAWPC]: = ( S * E * tmin ) / ( R + 0.6 * tmin ) - Pstatic = ( 17100.000 * 1.000 * 0.283 )/( 14.703 + 0.6 * 0.283 ) - 0.000 = 325.000 psig

MAWP based on stresses in the longitudinal direction, [MAWPL]:

PV Elite 2013 Licensee: SAIPEM S.P.A. FileName : API579 ---------------------------------------API-579 Calculations : Step: 8 3:10p Dec 16,2013
= ( 2 * S * E * ( tmin - tsl ) ) / ( R - 0.4 * ( tmin - tsl ) ) = ( 2 * 17100.000 * 1.000 * ( 0.283 - 0.000 ) )/ ( 14.703 - 0.4 * ( 0.283 - 0.000 ) ) = 662.593 psig

Minimum MAWP, [MAWP]: = min( MAWPC, MAWPL ) = min( 325.000 , 662.593 ) = 325.000 psig

MAWPr >= MAWP 341.283 >= 325.000 PASSED

MAWP criterion passed.

Summary of Level 1 Assessment:

PASSED

Average Measured Thickness Criterion:
