Boxing Day Swimmers

While we were doing an Open Top Bus tour of New York, on a cold but sunny day, we thought about all those brave people who were taking part in the Boxing Day swims in Cromer, Mundesley and Overstrand. Luckily, thanks to Hubba, Paul & Christine Damen and Martin Dennis, we are able to bring you some great pictures of the swimmers in this issue. Congratulations to these two winners of the Double Dip competition in Cromer. While everyone was doing their thing in Norfolk, Lis and I flew off to the Big Apple on Christmas Day for a couple of weeks for our annual holiday with the Yanks. This of course meant that we both missed the Boxing Day Swims along our coast. I would like to thank very much everyone who has covered these for us in our absence. Once again it appears to be just as, if not more, popular than they were last year. Thankfully there is enough madness floating around to draw the swimmers into the sea every year. I remember one particular year when I took part in the Boxing Dip, being given a very large brandy afterwards by the then landlady of the White Horse, and back home for a bath then out to lunch with neighbours who poured far too much wine into my tender body. It could be said that my Boxing Day was well written off by too much of everything. Having returned to the UK, still feeling pretty dreadful, with a chest infection, I will leave my

report of our trip across the USA by train and our day trip to the Grand Canyon from Williams in Arizona for our next issue. Despite my poor health this time, the US of A, is one place that we both always enjoy visiting, but I would never plan to live there as I would miss so much the characters that make the UK the only real place for me to enjoy living in.

I am writing to you to comment on the letter published in issue 027 from Dr Rupert Read, Lead Green Party MEP Candidate, Norwich. I must firstly state that I will not ever be a Green Party supporter, as I do find it very two faced! For a political party who are anti fossil fuel, nuclear energy, and any of the modern transport methods, who also believe that we should all walk, cycle or ride horses, yet either own or are prepared to be driven in any combustion engine vehicle that burns oil based products (Including all public transport!) and will have electricity in their house which is produced by Nuclear, gas fired, oil fired or coal fired power stations. Worst of all, how many members fly either on business or pleasure? Having said this, I do support SOME of their ideals. I do support off shore wind farms and I believe that the Sheringham Shoal adds to the landscape when looking out to sea, especially when the sun is shining on the towers. I do not though, support any on shore wind farms, whether they have one, two or a hundred windmills, as they cause more damage to the environment by their construction and spoil the countryside of some of our most beautiful landscapes. Plus, in either case, the amount of electricity needed to manufacture the blades alone means that the first 5 yrs production will just replace the electricity that was used to manufacture them.

Dear Editor,

(This statement was made by one of the bosses of the Sheringham Shoal construction company when I was transporting them by coach) My main concern is that you cannot store electricity for mains use, except in small amounts, so it has to be produced as and when it is needed. During the last few weeks, we have suffered from very strong winds, much of the time they were too strong for the windmills so they had to be locked, therefore they are not producing electricity!! Today, there is no wind, so the windmills will not be turning on shore because of this, again, no electricity! I am sure that they are turning slowly off shore as there is always some wind blowing down the North Sea! When there is high pressure there is very little wind, which coincides with very hot weather in the summer and very cold weather in winter, so in both cases, we need more electricity to provide heating or cooling, but the lack of wind cannot provide it. I was amused by the comment that wave power & tidal energy is 100% reliable. So he concedes that wind power is not 100% reliable. Sadly at present, neither of these alternative sources are yet being studies in a large scale and will take a long long time before they are. As much as the Greens would never accept the truth, there is only one answer, nuclear energy which can be produced as and when required,

and can be continuous. Wind and wave power can be used to replace nuclear as and when the winds and waves allow the production, so we MUST have a combination of both. We must construct more off shore wind farms, as large as possible, so we can reduce the number of nuclear power stations that need to be built. We cannot manage without both, although we could of course be totally nuclear, which would be too expensive. I am sure Mr Green is now jumping up & down ranting about nuclear waste. Well Mr Green, we have had nuclear weapons and power for over 60 yrs and there has been a lot of waste created in that time, and it has all been dealt with. Are yes, you say, what about the accidents at Chernobyl and in Japan due to the tsunami, plus Three mile island in the USA. In each case, there was an action which resulted in an accident. At Chernobyl & Three Mile Island, an action was taken which should not have been done, resulting in the disaster, in Japan we had one of the largest tsunami in history. This plant should not have been built at this site, or if it had to be, they should have ensured that the construction could withstand these events. We learn from our mistakes, and 21st Century nuclear power plants are a lot safer than any of the above and will continue to be, we are running out of oil and no longer dig coal, so we must quickly construct more off shore wind farms and nuclear power stations, with one proviso we MUST ensure that we use BRITISH materials and man power. When Sheringham Shoal was built, to show how it helped the local businesses, BBC produced a taxi company! The manufacture, shipping, construction, operation and income produced by the operation of this important part of OUR power networks has all gone into mainland Europe. We receive nothing in cash terms from the Sheringham Shoal, every penny spent and earned goes abroad. This must stop! We must start producing the windmills and infrastructure, and the labour to build them must be from in the UK. I am a Little Englander and proud of it, as I fully support, as much as possible, British goods & manufacturers. It hurts to see all this money going abroad when we could be providing jobs & taking youngsters off unemployment benefits by ensuring that the new wind mills and power stations are built in the UK. I now come to insulation of houses. I fully support what Dr Read has said regarding insulation, but what is needed is the Government to have every house in the UK checked for what it needs in insulation and then get it done. We should not need the various power companies to spend unnecessary money with surveys and then claiming grants, it should be done directly by the Government to ensure that every house is fully insulated. By cutting out the profits of the power companies & charges for their surveys, this would go a long way to covering the costs. Finally, One thing has puzzled me for along time, why have political parties not requested the Water Companies to produce electricity? We have a constant supply of water to every property in this country, which comes via underground pipes from huge reservoirs. The water passes through enormous pipes, so why dont the water companies fit turbines in these pipes as the water leaves the reservoirs and then produce electricity 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Yes there will be a cost to install the equipment, but the electricity produced could be very high, and this could help reduce the costs of the water to every household, (Not to mention increased profits for the water companies!!!!).

So Dr Read, I suggest you try to ensure that every house in the UK is fully insulated directly by the government and also get them to (A) build more off shore wind farms using British companies, and, (B) to persuade the water companies to install turbines at every reservoir. Finally, take off those blinkers, come into the real world and accept that wind & wave cannot produce all the electricity we need, so we must have an alternative and nuclear as it is the only fuel that does not poison the atmosphere. Go on, you know it make sense. Yours sincerely Arthur Bailey Gresham

Dear Editor

Congratulations to all the shops taking part in the festive window competition in Cromer, all were very impressive. We are not aware of the winners of the 2nd & 3rd places, however we were amazed that the excellent Artifax windows received nothing. Both windows, especially the fur bears, seals and hats really did capture the essence of Christmas. Londons Oxford & Regent streets would be proud to have had them. Well done to all involved in dressing these windows. Chris & Babara Loome Cromer

Dear Philip,

You printed a lovely piece by Mikki Rokk about the How Norfolk Got the Groove Talk at Mundesley Library in October. It was so nice to see it, and thanks for all the support that the Crab Tales is giving to the libraries at the moment. I am sure you can imagine that staff are feeling a bit demoralised by all the proposed cuts so it has really boosted morale as well as help make people aware of what we offer. Very Best Wishes Maria Pavledis

On behalf of the townsfolk of Aylsham & District and members of Aylsham Christmas Decorations Community Committee, may I give heartfelt thanks to all the various organisations, together with shopkeepers, tradesmen and other individuals who came to put up the Christmas tree and Christmas lights around the town and then again on Sunday 5th January to take them all down and store them away.

Many thanks also to the ladies of The Flower Club who decorated The Pump, the ladies of the W.I. who decorated The Town Sign and to Lorene & her ladies who decorated the inside of The Town Hall so beautifully. Thanks also to Anne Marsden and her friends who cooked us breakfast on both occasions. Thanks also to Mel of Partridge Electrical, Steve Newstead and his colleagues of Cooks Electrical who sorted out electrical problems, and Francis Dodd, Ian Bunting & Catherine Hayes for putting up more new lights and connecting them. Also to Tony of Towen Supplies of Aylsham who supplied a cherry picker, without whose help the tree & lights up high would not have been fixed. Our lovely Christmas Tree was donated by Mr. & Mrs. Smith of Copeman Road, Aylsham and Keith Edwards of Aylsham Grounds & Property Services made sure it was firmly fixed. We were kindly offered three Christmas Trees this year by different individuals so we should have a supply for the next couple of years. Our only disappointment this year was that on the Switch On weekend some crazy individuals pulled out several connections to the tree lights, which caused extra work to reconnect them. Aylsham Market Place and surrounding streets looked very festive and bright with our new & old lights this year thanks to the generous time given so freely by all our local volunteers, at least 50 in all. I would like to thank Smudge Smith of Aylsham Town Council personally for all the work he has done for me as we organised the lights and erected and dismantled them. The Committee hope that we can change other lighting around Town for next Christmas, finance permitting, but we desperately need new members, with new ideas, to join our Committee. May I thank all my Committee Members for their support & commitment throughout the year and particularly my Vice Chairman Francis Dodd who has worked very hard. If you would be willing to join our Committee please contact me on 01263 732 396. Our first meeting this year will be on Monday 27th January in the Green Room of The Town Hall at 7.30pm. If any person or organisation would like to give further donations towards our Christmas Lights we would be extremely grateful. I would like to thank everyone who put money in our buckets on the night of the Switch On. Total raised was 175. I send my very best wishes to everyone for the coming year. Many thanks again and I hope I have not missed any one out with my thanks. Keith Elphick. Chairman. Aylsham Christmas Decorations Community committee.

I recall watching this mad swim on Boxing Day before Lis and I moved to Cromer, well over 10 years ago, the expression sheer madness does come to mind.

The Swim is organised by the North Norfolk Beach Runners (pic below) and has indeed grown in numbers every year and the swim is now very much part of the social calendar every Boxing day on Cromers Beach. The Editor would like to thank Hubba, aka Dave Roberts, for the these photos as a public record of Cromers annual madness that is this swim every year. PK

The Frog Prince At Aldborough

Our Favourite
Christmas Letter
Dear All,
I wanted to send you a Christmas greeting, but it is so difficult in todays world to know exactly what to say without offending someone, so I met with my legal advisers, and on their advice wish to say the following: Please accept with no obligation, express or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, nonaddictive, gender-neutral celebration of the summer/ winter solstice holiday depending on which half of the hemisphere you may reside, practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/ secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling & medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2014, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that New Zealand is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes. By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wishers to actually implement any of the wishes for themselves or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wishers. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher. No trees were harmed in the sending of this message; however, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced. This was our Christmas e-mail from Jeremy Westenra in New Zealand.

In Aldborough Schools version of the classic panto The Frog Prince, Top Cat met ....Puss in Boots, Cinderella, The King, the Ugly Sisters, Three Pigs, Handsome Prince, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf . Mary Berry and her marvellous Bake Off cake made a guest appearance too. Written & directed by teacher Jill Morgan with the support of Teaching Assistant Claire Taylor, the panto told the story of the Three Witches who had mistakenly cast a spell turning Cinderellas father into a frog leaving the Kings daughters (the Two Ugly Sisters) to woo the Handsome Prince. They set out on a journey teaming up with an array of characters to find the Froggie Godmother who eventually led them to Winnie and her Witch sisters. The undoing of the spell, gave a happy ever after ending with Cinderella reunited with her father once again. Aahh! The frog chorus and the wild woods added dance and song to the entertainment. The Year 6 children, taking on the main characters, worked hard to learn their lines and put in much time after school. Headteacher Tina Casburn said: The children were remarkable, showing huge confidence and clearly enjoying themselves. They receive a huge amount of coaching in drama, music and dance which we find has a transformational effect on their academic learning for the rest of the year. Many parents and staff helped with the production, working on costumes, lighting, props, sound & choreography with the help of the schools Friends group also running a raffle and providing the much needed refreshments.

The Marsham Belles have had a very good year entertaining around church groups, homes and village halls etc. and at our recent AGM we decided to invite requests from the area for anyone who would like to book us to come to them for 2014. Obviously Christmas carols sound lovely on the bells, but we play other music all the year round. We make no charge as such, just ask for a donation towards travelling costs. If you would like to book please contact me on 01263 734 091 or by email
hm.kingswood@hotmail.com

Dear Editor,

Alternatively if groups or individuals would like to come and have a go please use same contact details and we will organise a workshop in our village hall. Further details will appear later, but we are taking part in charity events during the summer. A Strawberry Tea, with entertainment, is to be held in Corpusty in aid of helping fund items for Nepalese school children and a similar event in Marsham village hall, to help raise funds for a Defibrillator to be installed at the village hall. This will also mark the 30 year anniversary of the Marsham Belles. Hazel Kingswood

A Dazzler Of A Display
Crowds of locals and visitors enjoyed a dazzling and spectacular start to 2014 at Cromers New Years Day Fireworks. The display saw over 500 fireworks launched off Cromer Pier and out to sea in the countrys biggest New Years Day firework show. The event which attracted thousands of people on a wet and windy day saw a clear and dry spell for the dazzling evening display. Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 15-minute extravaganza explode in the skies & on the surface of the sea. Clive Casburn from Premiere Fireworks said: the display has become for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier has proved to be a marvellous setting, by

Dear Sir,

Owen Paterson, the national Environment Secretary, seems increasingly to regard his ecological illiteracy as a badge of pride. The latest example is his suggestion that destruction of ancient woodland could be offset by planting new trees in its stead. But ancient woodland, by definition, has been in existence since at least 1600. New planting could not possibly replicate the rich diversity of life which has grown up over centuries in such treasured local ancient woodland as Foxley Wood. The percentage of land in this country and in this county that is ancient woodland is so low (only 3%), that we cant afford to lose any. Our Governments obsession with growth at any cost cannot be permitted to destroy natures final surviving crown jewels. Tragically, the Conservatives have completely lost their one-time calling as conservers of our natural and cultural heritage. It is the Greens that have now taken up the mantle of preserving our countryside. If I am elected a Green MEP this year, I will be doing everything I can to make sure that the powers of the EU are a force for good in nature conservation. That means preserving, not destroying, our remaining ancient woodlands. Ancient woodlands are in effect unique organisms: ancient woods contain a depth & complexity that only long undisturbed stretches of time can create. We in the Green Party are committed to ensuring that our wonderful ancient woods hereabouts remain undisturbed. We invite you to join us in this endeavour. Faithfully, Rupert Read, lead Green Party MEP-candidate, Eastern England Norwich If you are reading this, so too are your future clients. To advertise in the Crab Tales phone Philip on

rigging the whole length of the pier the show can be seen all along the shoreline. Also, by suspending material from the pier, adding another dimension to the display. The use of aquatic fireworks, surprises the audience every year and the reflections of the fireworks in the sea create a really unbelievable atmosphere.

We take great pride in firing this show, which helps to bring a real celebration to the town and North Norfolk, to welcome in the New Year. This years display was specially designed to conclude with red fireworks, which represented poppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War in 1914. One visitor said It is a lovely start to 2014, and the raft of red lanterns at the end was just beautiful. The afternoons activities began with a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners, which saw 18 brave people line up to run a mile along Cromers recently storm battered promenade. The race was won by Catherine Longe from Holt in a time of 7mins 24secs. Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said: This years show was as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have been planning and building the show over the last few months and produced effects that lit up the skies and sea in a variety of colours. Local attractions & traders opened up their shops, eateries, museums & businesses on what is now one of the towns busiest days of the year. For the second year running the organisers were running a Photography Competition which was open to children and adults

Overstrand Christmas Sing-along

OnSunday 15th December The White Horse in Overstrand held its annual party in aid of its charity this year which is Nelsons Journey. Village musicians from Ivy Farm Holiday Park, Claire & Will Reynolds have the most enjoyable voices and were joined by Mick Starling and Peter Mantle-Syer for an evening of Christmas songs. A special performance by the UKs top Cliff Richard tribute artist Cliff as If entertained a packed pub who sang & clapped throughout. Panto Fairy Fairy Liqid, was wearing a very interesting costume! better known as musician Mick Murphy, with his amusing rendition of No one Loves a fairy when theyre Forty was really comical. It was a pleasure to be able to revel in such an accomplished team kindly devoting their time with party-popping performances. I had not been to this venue before and found it most agreeable. The tombola and raffle, along with donations raised 180.00. Cindy Johnson

YOUR NEXT CRAB TALES COMES OUT on January 31st

Broadland Chess Club members took part in a blitz tournament on Monday 23rd December where players had just 5 minutes to complete each of their 7 games. Callum Fruish won the junior section (scoring 3 out of 7). Ken McEwan won the senior section (scoring 6 out of 7) - with Henry Duncanson a very close second (also scoring 6 out of 7). 2014 looks like being another exciting year for Broadland Chess Club. It has teams in all three divisions and cup competitions run by Norfolk County Chess Association and a team in the national chess league. It is running tournaments for adults in May and children in January & June. It is also planning to take a team to Latvia.

Written by Richard Hewitt Partner at Hayes + Storr This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. Should I have a Survey done? You have found that perfect property to buy, and your offer has been accepted. You have been round the house a few times and everything looks lovely and the coffee smelt wonderful! So, do you need to spend all that money on a survey? Well, it depends. If you are borrowing money from a bank or building society, a valuation survey will be required, and your mortgage offer letter should explain the cost. If it is only your money you are using to buy the property you do not have to have a survey done; it is your important decision. Some reasons to consider are set out later, but first, what are the different types of surveys? There are 4 main types and they increase in cost from 150 or so, upto and beyond 1,000. Mortgage Valuation This is just the lender checking that the value of the property is sufficient to cover its loan to you. It does not offer you, as a buyer, any protection. A Home Condition Report The report will provide you with clear traffic light ratings indicating the condition of different parts of the building, services, garage and outbuildings drawing attention to obvious defects that require attention. This survey will not go into a great amount of detail nor will it give you a valuation of the property. These are often used if you are purchasing a modern property in apparent good condition. A Home Buyer Report The report includes all of the features in the Home Condition Report as well as a more extensive inspection, a valuation of the property by the surveyor, an insurance reinstatement figure for the property, a list of defects or potential defects that could affect the value of the property, advice on repairs and maintenance, a list of issues that require investigation so as to avoid future problems and defects and identification of any legal issues that require addressing and information on the location and local environment. These are often used if you are purchasing a standard older or modern property that appears in reasonable condition.

Should I Have A Survey Done?

A Detailed Building Survey Also known as a structural survey. This report includes a thorough inspection & a detailed report, a description of visible defects and potential issues, the repair options available and the implications of taking no remedial action. These are often used if you are purchasing a larger, or older/run down, altered or unusual property or if you are intending to carry out major works to the property Shall I have a survey? The purchase of a house is for most of us, the single biggest financial commitment we will ever make. Failure to have a survey may leave you with having to spend thousands that you had not budgeted for, and to problems selling on in due course. On the other hand, estimated costs of repairing identified problems, set out in a full survey, gives you important budgeting information, and if the problems have come as a surprise to you, may result in you not going ahead, saving you from an expensive mistake, or justify a renegotiation of the agreed price. Our advice is simply to make sure you learn everything you can about the property you are buying, and that should include getting a survey. Which Surveyor? Look for a surveyor with Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) membership who is used to surveying properties in this area. Any surveyor should give his or her professional view up front as to the most appropriate survey for the property you are interested in. If you require advice on this or any other legal matter please contact the team at our Sheringham office on 01263 825 959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Eating In UK In A Life Saver For Trimingham... The Fifties ....and a first for anywhere in Norfolk.
Pasta had not been invented. Curry was a surname. A takeaway was a mathematical problem. A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower. Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time. All crisps were plain; the only choice we had was whether to put the salt on or not. A Chinese chippy was a foreign carpenter. Rice was a milk pudding, and never, ever part of our dinner. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. Brown bread was something only poor people ate. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green. Coffee was Camp, and came in a bottle. Cubed sugar was regarded as posh. Only Heinz made beans. Fish didnt have fingers in those days. Eating raw fish was called poverty, not sushi. None of us had ever heard of yoghurt. Healthy food consisted of anything edible. People who didnt peel potatoes were regarded as lazy. Indian restaurants were only found in India. Cooking outside was called camping. Seaweed was not a recognised food. Kebab was not even a word never mind a food. Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold. Prunes were medicinal. Surprisingly, muesli was readily available, it was called cattle feed. Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one. Water came out of the tap, if someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than petrol for it they would have become a laughing stock. The one thing that we never ever had on our table in the fifties .. was elbows! Thanks to Alan Eatough for this Care UK are holding IMMEDIATE LOCAL INTERVIEWS for Community Care Workers. We are eager to speak to people who can work in Cromer and all surrounding areas. We require daytime, evening and weekend care workers that can drive and have their own vehicle. There are many benefits of working for one of the largest care providers in the UK including: Up to 28 days paid holiday (inc. bank holidays) Weekly pay and paid mileage Childcare vouchers Full, free ongoing training Free uniform Excellent career development opportunities

To apply: Call the recruitment team on: 0333 321 8854 or you can meet Jo Kendrick at The Fishing Boat every Monday between 11am and 12pm. Norman Lamb came to Trimingham in mid December to open the only cpad defibrillator site in Norfolk that is in a telephone box. He is pictured above with Terry Brown, Trimingham Parish Councillor who has been a lot of help in organising residents for demonstrations etc. Thanks to Peter Wright for sending this in.

Like many people who live around Cromer I reach for the Crab Tales to find out whats going on, for whats happened and whats coming up. Unfortunately (sorry Philip) the information on future events is only as good as that provided, and only covers the next couple of weeks. As an event organiser this is a problem: it is frustrating to find that the latest must go to event has been arranged at the same time as a not to be missed event. If only we could have checked before organising it and chosen another day. Cromer is an active place - if we cant find out about events how can we expect visitors to? We want to encourage people to come to Cromer: by publicising whats happening around the town we can show what a vibrant place Cromer is. Unless Ive missed it, there isnt a comprehensive source of Whats on in Cromer. So, Im setting up an online events diary, and I need your help. To encourage its use (by event organisers and event goers) I have made it as open as possible. Anyone can post about events they organise, anyone can use the data in their publications; and there is a special app so that people can use the data on their websites. It will only be comprehensive if all event organisers use it. So take a look at : yourCromer.co.uk. Its about your Cromer. Barry Meadows

.............of blowing his own trumpet. Sorry, blowing his own cornet. Peter Golden was presented with an inscribed carriage clock and a certificate in recognition of his long service with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band. Peter took up the cornet at the age of 14, and has been an enthusiastic musician ever since. In recent years he has occupied the key position of soprano cornet. The presentation was made by Mr Peter Sladden, the Bands President, at the Christmas Concert in St Peters Church, Sheringham. Due to unfortunately circumstances Peter is having to retire his cornet to its case, and his seat in The Band has become vacant. A respected and very skilled musician, Peter will be greatly missed. If there are any musicians who feel they have the skill to occupy the vacated position, or any other position in The Band, beginners also welcome please contact Steve Askew on 01263 838 411 or at: Stephen askew@hotmail. com or visit

...but spends two nights a week bowling & plays golf every Saturday. His wife thinks hes pushing himself too hard. So for his birthday treat she takes him to a local Strip club. The doorman at the club greets them and says, Hey, Vern! How ya doin? His wife is puzzled and asks if hes been to this club before. Oh no, says Vern. Hes in my bowling league When they are seated, a waitress asks Vern if hed like his usual & brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says: How did she know that you drink Budweiser? I recognise her, shes the waitress from the golf club. I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey. A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Vern, and says... Hi Vern. Want your usual table dance, big boy? Verns wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Vern follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. Vern tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every 4 letter word in the book.. The cabby turns around and says: Geez Vern, you picked up a real bitch this time.

Fitness League Reaches North Norfolk

Every year many fitness fads come and go. But none of them have the same longevity of The Fitness League. From January League classes are available in North Norfolk find out below how The League evolved and how it could suit you. Fitness League was founded by Mary Bagot Stack in 1930 as The Womens League of Health and Beauty. She had suffered serious illness as a child and recovered through a physical exercise regime which restored her health. This gave her a passionate belief in the value of physical fitness for all and she created a method which was part exercise, part dance which would energise and strengthen the whole body and mind. In 1925 she opened her Bagot Stack Health School, in London. Mary was an inspirational woman of her time. She dreamed of creating an organisation a League - for women, which would have the aim of health for everyone, so that every life could be lived to the full. By 1930, Mary had trained enough enthusiastic young teachers in order to launch The Womens League of Health and Beauty. Mary lived long enough to see the success of the League, but sadly in 1935 she died, aged just 51. She had prepared her daughter, Prunella to carry on her legacy. The League continued to expand spectacularly and by 1939 166,000 women had joined. Fitness League classes combine movement with a strong central core and body strengthening exercises.

ourselves that we can be, rather than aiming for a quick fix or an unrealistic ideal. They are classes for real women in todays world, just as they always have been. Annamarie is very excited to be starting classes here in North Norfolk so we can all benefit from the positive attributes of a Fitness League classes. These start on Friday 24th January at Cromer WI Hall every Friday 9.30-10.30am. Also at Sheringham community centre every Friday 11.30am -12.30pm If you would like to secure a place or for further details please phone Annamarie on 07989-285 599 or 01263-511 169 There is also a class at Overstrand Parish Hall on Monday evenings at 7pm phone Laura on 01263-578 244.

Our focus is on developing good posture and correct body alignment, and lengthening and strengthening muscle groups to encourage full range of movement. You then become more body aware, and feel taller, stronger and more mobile. Classes are suitable for participants of all abilities, ages and shapes and are taught to music in a fun and friendly environment. Bagot Stack classes provide a complete body exercise. No previous dance or exercise experience is needed. Of course, nowadays many other forms of exercise are available and women have so many more lifestyle choices. Whats different about Fitness League is that classes are about learning to use our bodies better and become the best version of
