Available from PFEIFER:
PH Reinforcement Continuity System
a user friendly system for durable
rebar connections
Benefits for the designer
I General German Technical Approval No. Z 1.5-81
I Full strength is maintained within the joint zone
I The option of using short bars lapped onto main reinforcement
or in the case of congested areas, special long bars up to 6.0 m long
are available lieu of main reinforcement.
I Can be used in static and fatigue load situations
(2
A
= 80 N/mm
2
, bar slippage less than 0.1 mm)
I Maximum load capacity achievable at bar joint position, in test failure will always
occur within the main bar area.
I On site swaged connections may be used if bar lengths are not known at time of
ordering.
I When the formwork has been removed, recesses are left by the plastic nail plates
around the bar connection zone, offering additional shear strength in the joint area.
Benefits for the buyer
I Cost effectiveness
I Standard lengths available from stock
I Specials available if required
I Simple part coding system for ease of ordering
Benefits for site use
I No drilling of formwork required
I No bending of reinforcement required
I Simple installation by nailing to formwork via plastic nailing plates
I Colour coded caps to bar ends for easy identification of bar diameters
I Standard metric threads offer many other potential fixing options
I Ridged threaded connection between bar ends, no lock nuts required
I Threaded connection allows easy of installation, even in complicated areas.
We can offer you
decades of experience
in the construction
industry and will happily
put this knowledge at
your disposal to help
you overcome wide
ranging construction
problems.
Female and male
bars are available
from stock in standard lengths.

Simple and safe colour
coded identification
system
Each male bar has a colour coded cap to
protect the thread and to identify the bar
diameter.
Likewise the female bar has a colour
coded plugged end which doubles up as
the nailing plate for installation onto the
formwork. Each bar diameter has its own
unique identification colour to prevent
any mismatching of components.
Quality Control and Prevention of accidents
I Our in house and independent checking system of the mechanical
prefabricated swaged connection guarantees complete system integrity and
safety
I Inner- and outer thread protected against corrosion and dirt by plastic caps
I No projecting bars increased safety on site
I By using ordinary ductile reinforcement steel (BSt 500 S) no brittle fracture in the
bar while bending
I The PFEIFER colour coding system eliminates the risk of using
incorrect bar sizes
PFEIFER PH reinforcement
continuity system during tensile test: bar
fracture outside the coupler, clear proof
for the safety of the socket- and threa-
ded bar connection.
Frequent inhouse laboratory checks
guarantee the highest
standard of quality and safety of
PFEIFER products.

Male and Female Bars
for welding
PFEIFER Male and
Female Bars for welding
In certain cases it may be easier to create
a longer bar from a standard size bar by
site welding, rather than ordering special
lengths.
Consider welding when the requirement
for a special length is identified late, and
the site programme cannot wait for a spe-
cial to be made, or if you wish to have the
total flexibility on site to make up any
length to suit.
PFEIFER can offer short bars 400 mm long
which could be held in stock on site, for
welding into longer lengths as required.
This could also have the potential materi-
al cost advantage of minimising the cost
of the more expensive proprietary materi-
al in favour of the cheaper bulk purchased
tonnage of main reinforcement.
Any site welding should be carried out in
accordance with the following methods
and standards:
Resistance butt welding, arc welding by
hand or gas welding. All must be carried
out in accordance with DIN 1045 section
18.6.6 table 24.
Overlapping and butt joint for load bearing
connection acc. DIN 4099 applies.
The corresponding bar strength will not be
effected for either static or dynamic load
conditions (DIN 1045, section 18.6.6).
The requirements for bending welded
reinforcement for concrete is set out in
DIN 1045, section 18.3.2.

Socket nailing plates and male bar caps are delivered as standard
with each consignment of bars.
Additional quantities can be ordered in any size and amount using the above ref. no.
The female bars are delivered complete
with the nailing plates to aid installation
and for the protection of the socket
thread. The female bars can easily and
quickly be fixed to the formwork using
these nailing plates. It is important to
observe the PFEIFER colour coding
system on both female bar nailing plates,
and the male bar caps, as this identifies
the bar sizes and ensures that the correct
components are always used together
(see page 3).
Shear load transfer
It is possible to transmit some of the
smaller shear forces by utilising the
circular necesses left by the female bar
nailing plates. For the transmission of
very large shear forces, we recommend
that the female bars should first be fixed
to a trapezoidal shaped former, which
should be installed within the reinforced
area of the concrete so that the force is
transmitted through the reinforcement
and not only in the cover area.
PFEIFER Torch Wrench
We can supply a PFEIFER torque wrench
for final tightening of the male bars to the
correct torque value. They have adjusta-
ble self locking jaws, which will securely
grip the steel bar. The torque wrench can
be adjusted to suit the full range of bar
diameters (torque range: 30-200 Nm).

of the thread according to DIN ISO 898 Part T1.
For this assembly you will require two female bars, both with standard right hand
threads and a threaded connecting bolt, as shown on the adjacent diagram. A left
hand threaded female bar is not necessary.
It is occasionally advantageous to utilize
a special female bar in place of a male
bar i. e. when there is an urgent require-
ment for a special long bar.
The connection is made by using a threa-
ded connecting bolt, between two stan-
dard female bars. There is no loss of load
capacity using this connection method.
The assembly has the advantage of not
requiring a left hand threaded female bar,
also when tightening the second bar the
correct torque on the whole assembly is
achieved at the same time.
Please note! There is often a
requirement for bent bars to be
used in areas where there is a
space restriction, or insufficient
concrete thickness to use normal
straight bars. In this case a right-
left-thread connecting bolt coup-
ler must be used (see page 17).
Installation of first female bar is as
previously described on page 15.
The threaded connecting bolt is
screwed into the second female
bar by hand.
Screw the threaded connecting
bolt thread projecting from the
end of the second female bar, into
the thread of the first female bar,
by hand or with a wrench.
Tighten the assembly to the
required torque using a torque
wrench.
Install the remaining reinforce-
ment and pour the concrete.

of the
thread according to DIN ISO 898 Part T1
Please note:
When using the right-left-thread connecting
bolts it is necessary for one of the female bars
to have a left hand thread. You can order this
type of female bar by adding Li to the end of
the normal code as indicated on the adjacent
example order format.
The left threaded female bar should
be installed and cast into the con-
crete first.
Gently turn the lock nut on the
coupler towards the thickened sec-
tion.
Attach the coupler to the second
bar (right thread) by no more than
one thread.
Offer up the second bar and coupler,
with the left thread end of the coup-
ler, up against the first bar with the
left thread, which is
already cast into the concrete. Turn
the nut anti clockwise by hand. The
thickened section of the coupler
should reach the face of the cast-in
bar before the lock nut makes
contact with the face of free bar. If
this is not the case, then you have
turned the coupler to far at stage 3.
Tighten the coupler with the torque
wrench positioned on the thickened
section of the coupler, to the requi-
red torque value.
Screw the lock nut up against the
face of the free female bar.
Hold the free female bar in the
required position while tightening
the lock nut up against the socket
with the torque wrench, to the
required torque value.
