Furthering Higher Education Possibilities through Massive Open Online Courses

In these last 5 years millions of people are following massive open online courses, whether with the purpose to obtain a diploma or just to learn new things or have new experiences. Besides that, the number of higher education institutions offering this kind of courses, in different formats, is also increasing. Due to the fact that this is new and involving more and more people and institutions, it is attracting media attention. It is also possible to witness a significant interest from higher education institutions (no matter its size or type or country of origin) as well as startups. The offer of such a solution always involves technology - from the side of the offer as well as from the side of the applicant (target). The reasons subjacent to the enrolment in such a course can be related with the International reputation of higher education institution but also to other reasons such as the interest of the topic, the syllabus, the tutors, the duration of the course, as well as the quality (perceived) of the course. Finally, some of these courses are offered for free, meaning that there is a business approach behind it that makes this offer possible. Due to all these factors it is time to reflect on what is happening, what are the business models? How does the student learn? What are the good practices about it, just to mention a few. Objective of the Book The objective of this book is to provide a space for a discussion regarding MOOCs, what do they mean, how do they will change the learning process, the role of teachers, the concept of classroom, the business models that can be used as well as an useful support to those wishing to create and promote a MOOC for a higher education institution. To sum up, the objective of the book is create an opportunity for discussion and sharing of pedagogical and technical strategies to the sharing of MOOC best practices as well as the discussion of the enablers and constraints that may arise while developing and implementing those solutions..

Target Audience

The target audience of this book comprises professionals, researchers and teachers working in the field of online courses and in particular, massive open online courses, covering various disciplines and applications, e.g. education, engineering, management, health, communication sciences, administrative sciences and information systems, adult education, sociology, computer science, and information technology. Moreover, the book will provide insights and support professional concerned with this new approach of teaching and learning. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Motivations for learners and MOOC providers MOOCs business models Pedagogy for MOOCs Quality of MOOCs Implication of MOOC for higher education MOOC technology Enablers and constraints for MOOC adoption Good practices with MOOC

Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before January 30, 2014, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by February 28, 2014 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by May 30, 2014. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
