Brief Notes on Fraudulent Electioneering in the 18th and 19th Centuries

Faggot Voting When property qualifications for voter registration existed, faggot voting involved purchasing freeholds for landless men in return for their vote. After the election, the land would be returned to its original owner. y the !"#$%s property qualifications to vote began to be removed from certain states &e.g. 'elaware, (ew )or*, +aryland, and were replaced by tax-paying qualifications, yet by the mid !.th century, property qualifications were still prevalent in the /nited 0tates. Colonizing ringing in people from outside of the voting district to vote. 1erhaps the most notorious example of this was following the 2ansas (ebras*a Act in !"34 when scores of +issouri men crossed the border into 2ansas in order to vote pro-slavery. 5his practice hinges on the difficulty of proving residence in the !.th century. 6ne +issourian allegedly declared that the dirt on his boots was 2ansas dirt when he was denied the opportunity to vote. Additionally, voter registration laws were not predominant in the !.th century. 7egistry laws arose in an attempt to combat voter corruption and were motivated by partisan politics around the !"4$s. 8owever, even voter registration laws could be corrupted. 9or example, in +ichigan, 7epublicans headed each local registry board, and subsequently disenfranchised many 'emocrats who had failed to register, but allowed many 7epublicans to vote if they had registered or not. 7elated to :oloni;ing was the particular instance of 1ipe-laying in which William +. oss 5weed brought scores of voters into the city of (ew )or* on the pretense of laying pipe for the city. Thugs and Toughs, and Shoulder itters /tili;ing intimidation to coerce voters to cast a particular vote has had a long history in the /nited 0tates. efore ballots, most votes were cast by raising one%s hand, so coercion was fairly easy. Around the mid !.th century, the secret ballot was introduced in many places around the country in order to combat this type of corruption. 8owever, the ballots and ballot boxes had their own problems &see below,. (evertheless, many candidates and political parties employed armed men who would loiter around polling places intimidating certain voters into either leaving or casting a particular vote. 5hugs and 5oughs were also employed in many similar acts of intimidation. 5his coercion could be particularly fierce if a political party had strong influences with the local police force and in !"<" in (ew )or*, partisan police even released prisoners to vote. 0houlder 8itter specifically refers to aggressive-loo*ing men who would =ostle individuals in line for the ballot in order to encourage them to leave. Floaters 9loaters were voters who would vote in more than one location. 5his was particularly suited to urban environments where voters were relegated to specific districts. !e"eaters As should be quite obvious, repeaters were voters who voted more than once at the same polling place. +any 9loaters were also repeaters. !o#dies 7owdies are related to 5hugs in that the term refers to armed me who disrupted elections. 8owever, in my opinion, 7owdies specifically refers to thugs who

are hired to cause enough of a disturbance at a polling location to have it closed down or have the votes cast there declared suspect enough to be considered invalid. 5his was obviously done in areas were the ma=ority of voters were of an opposing political party. Naturalizing While not as useful on the frontier, (aturali;ing involved the mass naturali;ation of emigrants on election day. 5ammany 8all was notorious for mass naturali;ations, sometimes a =udge would naturali;e "$$ or more emigrants at a time who would then be led in gangs to the ballot box. Ballots and Ballot Bo$es allots were designed to reduce corruption, but they could be, and were, easily corrupted. allots of a certain color were distributed to members of a certain political party in order to distinguish partisans. >f a party had influence with election officials or inspectors, party-specific ballots could be produced and distributed. A contrary vote on a party ballot could be considered a double vote, and could therefore be discounted. >n !"3#, in an attempt to bypass 5ammany 8all%s ballot corruption, ballots were mailed to every home in the city of (ew )or*. A 5ammany agent bro*e into the post office and stole a ma=ority of the ballots to be sent. Franchise Voting 9ranchise voting involves the use of influence to control the votes of a section of the population. 5his was most flagrant with regard to the Army. 0oldiers were sometimes ordered to cast particular votes, oftentimes in frontier elections, where the /0 Army would have a strong presence. An example of this is the !"?# county elections in 'eadwood. With all of the corruption ta*ing place in many !.th century elections, they can sometimes seem more li*e guerilla wars. >t is not out of period to have rampant violence during elections, and it would actually be more in period to have a dirty, corrupt, and violent election. 5his, of course, is great for @A71ing when such things as politics can seem dull and action-lessA the purview of lame role-players and repugnant to stic* =oc*s. > have included here the modules > wrote for my elections. %udge Election 5he election for Budge of 'evil%s 1erch will be held this event. 5he election has been long-delayed, but it is finally coming to pass. 5he previous candidate running against Budge :ole was William 1axton, an estranged uncle of the 1axton clan. 8e was murdered by the :A:0 who made his death seem li*e an accident &8e fell off his horse and bro*e his nec* in < placesCimagine that. (oteD 5he amount of times he bro*e his nec* should always increase with each tellingCno upper limit,. 5he current candidate is the 1: Ereen 'anielson &William 5obin,. 5he election spirit should dominate the mood of the whole event, but practically, most of the real action will ta*e place on 0aturday. 5he polls will be open for a three hour period, and this is when the action will become intense. 5he goal with this plotline is to create a battle between the 1:s and the local government that will be decided not by legitimate voting, but by an absurd amount of election fraud. Fssentially, whoever can be the most fraudulent will win.

Eeneral 1lotline (oteD At any lull in the action &but > doubt that there will be much, the staff should ta*e time to play various (1:s who are tal*ing about the election. +uch of my time will be ta*en up by meetings with +r. Ereen as various (1:s, but 'ave and the other (1:s can handle this if they have the time and inclination. Flection system 5he system for the election is very simple. 'uring the polling, several modules will occur &more may occur at 1: discretion,. 5hese modules will represent the :ole party attempts to win extra votes, or discredit the Ereen party votes. ecause :ole%s party has an extreme ma=ority in Glegitimate% votes, the 1:s% success will be measured by how many Gsuccessful voting actions% they achieve versus those of the (1:s. Hoting will ta*e place at four precincts simultaneously during the < hour polling timeD 5he +ain 5horoughfare, 5he 5ent Ward, :ole @ogging and Fnterprise, and 5he :elestial Ward. 5he modules will consist of actions to be ta*en or conflict to be overcome at each of the polling places. Flection officials are sent from the 5erritorial government, but Eov :ole has to maintain a semblance of legitimate voting, or he could ris* censure by the (ational government and may ris* his 5erritorial :harter. (evertheless, the election officials will be predisposed to aid the :ole votes and hamper Ereen voters &insofar as they can distinguish them,. 1arty Affiliations At the start of the event, each Gparty% will have a body of allies and associates. 5hese will represent who will vote for the party or support it in extralegal voting actions. 5he :ole 1arty :attlemen of :utter%s roo* and :ole%s personal gang &illegal voting pool, 5he :oncerned Authority and eauregard 'everaux &legal voting pool, 1aid >rish +obsters from Gbac* east% led by 5ommy +cEuiness 5he +cAndles &legal voting pool, :ole @ogging and Fnterprise wor*ers and 1ayton :ole &legal voting pool pressed into voting by threats, 5he Ereen 1arty @i ai and the :elestials &illegal voting pool cannot vote illegally, 5he 1axton oys Angry @and 5enants &illegal voting pool, 5he few 5ent Wardians who can actually vote &legitimate voting pool, Hagrants and 5ent Ward @ow-lifes &illegal voting pool, (eutral 1arties

5he Walburns &legal voting pool, 1ro-1: 5own (1:s &not significant enough to constitute a voting pool, 6bviously, the 1:s are at a significant disadvantage and have to bring =ust about all of their illegal voters to the polls as well as steal some :ole votes or bring over some neutral votes. (oteD 5he :A:0 will not change sides. 5he +cAndles may pretend to change sides, but they won%t without ama;ing, unanticipated 1: actions. 5he Walburns will not come over without support against the +cAndles. 5he :attlemen of :utter%s roo* will not change sides. 5he Ereen 1lan @i ai plans on creating votes in several ways and will pitch these to Ereen. 9irst, the :elestials own their ward, so they are creating a faggot vote by Gselling% the land in requisite parcels local vagrants and friendlies in order to legitimate their votes. 5hese votes will ta*e place in the :elestial Ward. (ext, the @and 5enants will produce a coloni;er vote by coming into 'evil%s 1erch pretending to be legitimate voters. 5his voting will ta*e place in the 5horoughfare. 5he 1axton oys will round up the vagrants and low-lifes of the 5ent Ward and press them into voting by force and intimidation. 5his will ta*e place in the 5ent Ward. 8e also plans to find some way of capturing the factory votes. 5he :ole 1lan :ole *nows that he has votes, but he also *nows that Ereen is crafty, and the @i ai is planning to create fraudulent votes. 8e is using the :A:0 to intimidate the :elestials, and to go as rowdies to the :elestial voting precinct in order to cause enough of a disruption to close the polls and illegitimate the votes already cast. 8is brother, 1ayton :ole, already threatened to fire anyone who cost a Ereen vote. 5he use of colored ballots will insure that the wor*ers vote for :ole. :ole is also planning to dupe any illegal votes in the 5ent Ward by delivering requisite ballot envelopes that are stamped with a :ole party insignia. Flection officials will declare any Ereen vote in a :ole envelope to be illegitimate. 8e also plans on bringing in some >rish gangsters to serve as muscle while the :A:0 are busy. 5he >rish gangsters will intimidate Ereen and his voters both before the voting and during it by watching the colored ballots. 5he election officials will also wor* very hard to discredit a voter who does not possess a yellow ballot. 9inally, :ole is bringing in his own cattle hands and those of supporting cattlemen in :utter%s roo* to create his own coloni;er vote. +odules and 7ole-1lay Fncounters +odsI7ole-play before the 1olls open +oduleD 9ire in the :elestial Ward

9riday night, the :A:0 set fire to the :elestial Ward in an attempt to discourage the coolies from resisting :ole. 8oo*D 5he 1:s see an orange glow near the :elestial Ward. 0oon after, a celestial will run into town loo*ing for Ereen. 8e will tell him that the Ward is on fire and that they need help putting it out. 8e%ll also say that they can%t find @i ai. >f @i ai dies, the whole =ig could be up. >f the 1:s investigate, they will find fire spreading throughout the Ward. :elestials and nearby residents are fighting the flames. >f the 1:s don%t inquire about @i ai, let them fight the fire with water buc*ets outside of the mod shac* for a few minutes. After this, a :elestial will say that he *nows where @i ai is, but that he%s trapped in a burning tenement. >f the 1:s choose to investigate, they will find a central, two story building enveloped in flames. 5he building will be reped by the mod shac*. 5he interior lights should be replaced with orange bulbs, the orange spot light should be used, a fire should be built nearby if there is a convenient fire ring, the smo*e machine should be used liberally beforehand to fill the shac*, and smo*e bombs should be used once the 1:s are in the shac* to represent the smo*e. 5ry the strobe light and see if it adds anything &it does have a red filter,. @i ai is on the first floor of the building, trapped beneath a wooden beam or other heavy ob=ect that will ta*e 0trength !$ to move. Fvery person helping to remove the ob=ect who does not have the 0trength s*ill will count as having ! 0trength as long as they are wor*ing with someone who has the s*ill. 1:s can combine their 0trength to move the ob=ect. 5he 1:s can use nearby timber as leverage to move the ob=ect. /sing a lever will double their effective strength. # ash s*ills will move the ob=ect. ! ash s*ill used will reduce the 0trength requirement to 3. 5he enemy on this part of the module will be the fire. 5he burning building is represented in the following ways. (oteD every fire effect inflicts $ flame damage &it still sets you on fire, 5he 'oorD 5he door to the building is not on fire. 6nce the 1:s enter the building, fire envelops the door. 5wo fans with streamers will represent the flames covering the door. 1:s can try to avoid the flames, but they may pass through if they are covered in a blan*et, coat, or other large cloth. 0everal blan*ets will be available in the building. 5he 9loorD 5he floor will be on fire in places. 5his will be represented by crunched up construction paper. 5ouching the paper inflicts $ flame damage. Wherever the paper spreads, the fire spreads. 5he marshal will move, spread, and add paper as the module continues. A buc*et of water will douse some of the fire &use personal =udgment,. 5he marshal will move the paper to a non-threatening area or collect it for future distribution. 5he WallsD 5he walls will be on fire, but periodically, flame will explode through a wall, window, door, or other such buildingish thing. 5his will be represented by bomb bags

and confetti. 5he marshal will throw bomb bags at his discretion while moving around the mod area. When a bomb bag explodes, the marshal will throw a handful of confetti. >f a 1: is hit by the confetti, they ta*e $ flame damage. 5he :eilingD 5he ceiling is covered in a thic* layer of smo*e. 9lagging tape will be strung at intervals in the mod area at about chest height. 5his represents the smo*e level. >f a 1:s head goes above the smo*e level, heIshe will ta*e a suffocation effect. Any item that allows the user to resist gas attac*s will provide its resistances against the smo*e. 8owever, each use of the resistance only lasts for !$ seconds. A proper respirator will render the character immune to the smo*e. A wet rag will provide one resist to the smo*e. 9irst :omplicationD While the 1:s are in the building, the marshal will throw a pac*et at them for a rifle shot. 5his will represent a :A:0 sniper who was positioned to fire on any people who went to help @i ai. 5he sniper%s location will be represented by the little shac* opposite the mod shac*. 5he fire will continue throughout the module unless the 1:s go to stop the sniper. An (1: will be representing the sniper waiting for the 1:s to investigate. Any gunslinger will *now that the shots are from a rifle some distance away. Any gunslinger with the 0niper s*ill will *now where the sniper is probably located. @oo*ing outside will ma*e the sniper%s position obvious. 8e is on the top of a nearby building. 5he 1:s can fire at the sniper (1: as long as they stay at least !3 feet away from the (1: &this position will be sta*e-mar*ed,. 5here is a ladder on the side of the building. 6nce a 1: gets within 3 feet of the building, heIshe can no longer be shot at. Ereen that the meeting is important, but that because 1axton is an outlaw, it would be bad for the campaign for +r. Ereen to be seen with him. Budge :ole and his *in will be loo*ing for any legal excuse to ban +r. Ereen from the election. &5his meeting might be a good opportunity to have 5ommy ambush +r. Ereen. 8e will be leaving by himself, and > could play @i ai or someone else to tell him to go to the predetermined meeting place, thus allowing 5ommy and his goons to get him alone,. Bim 1axton will be waiting for Ereen at the meeting place. 8e will be alone. 8e will explain the 1axton plans to mobili;e votes in the 5ent Ward and he will explain the upcoming (ational Assembly Act. When their conversation is done &or before if 5obin notices,, 1axton will see someone spying on them from the woods. 8e will shout at the spy and draw his pistol and the spy will run away. 1axton will then tell Ereen that it is extremely important that they find a way to trac* this guy down and ta*e him out. 8e

will suggest the Ereen get his friends to help him because the 1axton oys are too far away. Anyone with trac*ing will be able to follow the spy%s trail. >t will lead bac* to town and go into the :elestial Ward. At 5rac*ing #, a 1: will *now that he was moving fast as if he was going somewhere specific. At 5rac*ing <, a 1: will *now that he met up with two other individuals and then went further into the Ward. At 5rac*ing 4, a 1: will *now the area of the Ward that he went into. With 5rac*ing at 3 ran*s or higher, a 1: can tell that all of the people were celestial and he can follow the trail to the building they went into. (in=a AlleyD 5he building is a really a small networ* of shanties down an alleyway in the :elestial Ward. >f @i ai is consulted, he will tell the 1:s that there is a group of :elestials in the Ward who have an ancient enmity with his family. 8e had long suspected them of duplicitous activity, including informing to :ole. @i ai didn%t wish to upset his control over the :elestials by starting a turf war, but if the 1:s can ta*e them out, it could leave him in the clear. >n fact, it would be best if they disguised themselves as :A:0. 5he Fvil :elestials live mostly down that alley, and a 5rac*er with ran* < or higher can tell than nobody has left since the original trac*s entered the area. Ereen will be furnished with a list of the voters% names to memori;e, but he can also as* them to ma*e up fa*e names that are easier for him to remember. 5he (1: playing the election official will have a list of the names, and the (1: playing the voter will be able to read off the name if it is the character%s real name. (oteD 5his module is structured somewhat li*e a dance. (1:s and 0taff will have to have a good idea about the flow of the module and when they will be changing characters. 5his module starts before the 1olls actually open. 5he voters will be lined up at the entrance to the 1olling booth, ready to cast their vote for Ereen or :ole. & efore this time, +r. 8e will have a representative in with him who will vouch for the next voter. 6nce the representative states the man%s name, the man will enter to cast his vote, and the election official will verify his name. 0ome voters will get their names wrongA some will forget fa*e names, etc. After every !$ of Ereen%s voter cast their vote, the election official will get stricter and stricter about the verification. 8e will quibble over pronunciationA as* additional questions about where the voter lives, how long he has lived in the 1erch, where he wor*sA etc. Fvery third time that an (1: votes as a different person, he will cast a vote for :ole. We want them to be frustrated, not bored and hopeless, the voting (1:s will brea* off to simulate a crowd gathering around the 5ommy +cEuiness and the whis*y wagon. &8opefully, > will have some help from other 1:s at this point, 5hese voters are :ole%s coloni;ers from :utter%s roo*. 6nce the crowd has milled about for a bit, 5ommy will hop off his wagon with purpose and lead the group towards the 1olling booth. Fvery one of his voters will be armed with yellow ballots and :ole envelopes. With luc*, there will be enough (1:s to have both :ole voters and Ereen voters, but we can fudge things around if need be. 5he group of :ole voters will brea* the line of Ereen voters, muscle them out of the way, and start to vote without hassle from the election official. 5he antagonism should rise very quic*ly, pushing the 1:s into some *ind of action. >f, by this point, the 1:s do not grasp the significance of the yellow ballots, a Ereen voter will tell +r. Ereen that he recogni;es some of the :ole voters as residents of :utter%s roo*. 8opefully, by this point, the 1:s will want yellow ballots of their own. >f the 1:s put two and two together, they can head off for the :ole 1arty 8eadquarters to get some yellow ballots. 6therwise, we can encourage them to do so by starting a fight and having a :ole voter or 5ommy +cEuiness flee to the 8eadquarters. We could also allow the 1:s to overhear 5ommy telling someone to go bac* to the 8eadquarters to get more yellow ballots. >n any event, if the 1:s don%t get a-hold of the yellow ballots, the eventual outcome of the Ereen party coloni;ers will be a failure. :ole 1arty 8eadquartersD 5he :ole 1arty 8eadquarters will be represented by the lower mod building. 6n 0aturday morning the burning building has to be torn down and the 8eadquarters set up so that we can smoothly transition to it. When the 1:s come to the 8eadquarters, they will find several :A:0 milling around out front plotting nefarious crimes and yelling racial slurs at passing minorities. 5he half-drun*en :A:0 will immediately verbally abuse +r. Ereen and his supporters, and the situation should dissolve into gunfire as they have no intentions of handing over and yellow ballots or of letting the Ereen party people inside the building. 6nce the few :A:0 outside are subdued, the 1:s will have to breach the building to get at the envelopes. 5he house should have plenty of windows &we can cut holes in the plastic after the 9ire mod, and 1:s can *ic* the door in with a ash s*ill. 6therwise, the can shoot off the loc* and

force the door open. 5he ballots and envelopes will by sitting out on a table inside. 6nce they have the ballots, they can deliver them to the voters who can now vote without a problem. +od 7ewardsD +aybe some crap guns on the :A:0, a bomb perhaps, and some loose change. +oduleD 0aws and 0ilence 8oo*D 0welled from their victory at the 5horoughfare, the 1:s will then receive some hopeful news. 8aving previously been thwarted in discussion with the 9actory wor*ers as to a plan that would enable them to vote with impunity, several 9actory wor*ers will show up to tal* with +r. Ereen. 5hey inform +r. Ereen that the voting is going poorly at the 9actory because 1ayton :ole and some foreman goons are intimidating everyone into casting a vote for :ole. 5hey suggest that +r. Ereen wait for the voting to be completed at the factory, steal the ballot box, and replace it with one full of Ereen votes. 5hey offer to create a diversion on the factory floor that should enable Ereen and his people to snea* into the office where the box is being *ept and replace it. 5hey even have a ballot box ready to go. 8owever, +r. Ereen must be careful to not be discovered because if he was, the ballot box would surely be chec*ed and the =ig would be up. 5hey don%t want to lose their =obs =ust for +r. Ereen, but they are willing to help stic* it to 1ayton :ole. 5he module will ta*e place in the location for the Helvet Elove 0aloon. 5he 1:s will have to enter the factory through a loading doc* that will be accidentally left open. 5hey will then have to snea* through the factory, being careful to avoid ma*ing any noise, until they reach the factory floor and the office where the ballot box is being *ept. 5he friendly wor*ers will then create a diversion, drawing the attention of guards and the election official, thus allowing Ereen to ma*e the switch. &> am foggy about how to actually set this up. >t will need to be figured out in consultation with the 0taff while > am loo*ing at the location, 5he main tas* of the module will be to avoid ma*ing enough noise that would cause alarm. 0ince the factory is a noisy place, shouting and fighting won%t be noticeable, but gunfire will be. 5he 1:s will encounter varied locations from wide open factory floors, to cramped crawl-spaces. 6ccasionally they will encounter suspicious employees with will have to be subdued. EunfireD Eunfire will alert the factory unless it is timed with the especially loud noises in the factory sound recordings that will be playing during the module. 5he 1:s should be able to get an idea of what is loud enough to cover gunfire. 7oom with a 0awD At some point, the 1:s will encounter a room that is dominated by a large band saw. 5he band saw will have a conveyor belt and chains that are used to pull logs through the saw. 5he 1:s will have to inch their way past the machinery on either side, but they will encounter some resistance. 8opefully, one of the 1:s can be *noc*ed

out or incapacitated and then thrown onto the conveyor belt. >f a 1:s is caught in the conveyor belt, heIshe will not be able to move, but will be drawn ever closer to the huge saw. 5his will be represented by having the 1: grasp a rope held by a marshal who will slowly draw the 1: closer to the saw rep. 5he 1:s must either spend !$ seconds untangling the afflicted character, or shoot the chains to brea* them. Eetting drawn into the 0aw will cause a 'eadeye, then < seconds later the loss of a limb, and three seconds later a coup de gras. 5here can be other rooms of courseCany suggestionsN We%ll either develop this more on site or play it by ear. +oduleD 7owdies at the :elestial Ward 8oo*D After the 1:s have switched ballot boxes, or horribly failed in the attempt, an (1: will come to alert Ereen that there is a riot going on a the :elestial Ward 1olling booth. 5he (1: will warn Ereen that if the 0heriff has to brea* up the riot, the election official will declare the precinct closed and all of the votes there invalid. 5his module is pretty simple. 0heriff 'oyle will come and brea* up the riot <$ minutes after the module is hoo*ed. 5o save their faggot votes, the 1:s will have to go over to the :elestial Ward and put an end to the riot. Again, the 1:s will meet 5ommy +cEuiness &unless he dies earlier, as he is leading the riot. 5his will consist of a timed field battle. 6nce the 1:s subdue, *ill, or drive off 5ommy, his goons, and the rowdies, the threat will be passed. (one of the rowdies will be using guns at first. As soon as a 1: draws a gun or *ills an (1:, all of the rowdies will pull out firearms and start shooting. >f shooting starts, the 1:s will lose !$ minutes of time. 6nce shooting does start, 5ommy &or some other goon, will toss a smo*e bomb to *eep things on a more even *eel. +od 7ewardsD +oney consistent with enemy @earnin% +oduleD :risis at the 5ent Ward 8oo*D y this time, the 1olling time should be wearing thin and the 1:s should be a bit wor*ed over. ut, one last conflict comes to warn Ereen that all of the 5ent Ward votes for Ereen have been invalidated. 5he problem was Ereen votes in :ole envelopes. 5he slea;y election official considered that voting for both candidates and threw out all of those votes. 5o *eep the votes, the 1:s are going to have to race against time to get the voters to another poll before it closes. 9irst, the 1:s will have to get to the 5ent Ward polling booth to collect the voters. 5hen they will have to get bac* to another polling place. /5 once they get to the polling place, they will discover that it was moved, >n the interest of public safety. (ow they will have to trac* down the new polling location. (1:s will be milling around in the area. >f as*ed, they will direct the 1:s to go to the campsite out in the woods to find the new polling location. 5he 1:s must get there before time runs out, but they will be attac*ed along the way by :A:0 members intent on *eeping them from their destination.

7epresenting the :rowdD 5he 1:s will need to *eep a string taut between 4 people to represent *eeping the crowd organi;ed. >f it is slac*ened too much &+arshal should use personal =udgment, for ten seconds, one person out of the crowd will run away. 5his will have no real bearing on voting other than if they lose !$ voters, the Gvoting action% will be considered a failure. +od 7ewardsD 0tandard money from enemy @earnin% total.
