How you can help Home-Start
Home-Start depends on a large group of volunteers to make the service
work. In order to become a volunteer no qualifications are required, you
just need previous parenting experience. You may be a mother, a father
or a grandparent or step-parent. A caring attitude and good listening
skills are essential. You will receive all the necessary training plus a
criminal record check before you are matched with a suitable family.

Things that volunteers do

The huge group of home-visiting volunteers, numbering over 15,000,
give support to parents at home.
Volunteers, known as trustees, are also required to help run the local

The volunteer will then meet with you for a
couple of hours each week and offer support.
‘Support’ in this context is difficult to define
since it is individually targeted. Here are
some examples:
A volunteer pops round for a cup of tea
and chat with a parent who is feeling iso-
lated and in need of adult contact and
conversation.
A parent who needs to attend a medi-
cal appointment but has no option but
to take their child(ren) along can ask
their volunteer to come too as an ex-
