Engineering Management MS Project/Planning Assignment

Submission 24th February 2009
Max. Contribution of this assignment to the whole course work mark is 30% of the course works (i.e. 15% out of 50%) This module is 50% exam and 50% course work

You must adhere strictly to the limit on the pages specified for each question. Writing beyond the specified limit will be ignored.

The Assignment
Construction TEES is developing a schedule for a major building project to start in 1/June 2007 in Middlesbrough, UK. The project manager has identified major activities of the project, their dependency and resources needed to run each activity. Appendix 1 provides information about the project, which includes project logic (activity links and their relationship FS, SS, and SF), activity durations, resource allocation and WBS. Appendix 2 provides definition on different activity relationships.

You have been asked to perform the following planning and scheduling processes with the help of Microsoft Project 2007.

A: CPM & WBS (Max marks 20% of the total marks) 1. Draw a Gantt-Chart and CPM network for the project. Calculate EST, EFT, LST, LFT and TF based on As Soon as Possible (ASAP) method and identify critical path. GanttChat should show WBS of the project (use A4 or A3 sheet as required) 2. Draw manually the hierarchy of WBS for the project (must include Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4). 3. Explain why identification of the critical path is important? Also comment on the changes to the Critical Path, if the project is developed using As Late as Possible (ALAP) method. (max one page)

B: Resources Histograms (Max marks 10% of the total marks) 1. Produce resource histograms for all the resources using ASAP method. Identify and discuss the maximum resources needed for this project per day and per month. (use A3 sheet for each histogram, max half page for discussion) 2. If As Late as Possible (ALAP) method is used. Will the number of resource identified in question B.1 changes, explain. (max one page)

EM CW MS Project/Planning School of Science and Technology, University of Teesside.

C: Resource Smoothing and Resource Levelling (Max marks 30% of the total marks) 1. Produce and draw smoothed resource histograms for the skilled labour resources. (use A4 or A3 sheet as required). Do not use automatic smoothening 2. Carry-out resource levelling for equipment resource (do not use automatic resource levelling) and discuss how activities might be delayed beyond LST to cater for the limits on equipment resources as a result of levelling. Consider resource pool for equipment resources as 8 units per day. (use A3 sheet for each histogram, max one page for discussion) 3. Explain and discuss the process of resource levelling. (max one page)

E: Cost Analysis (Max marks 20% of the total marks) 1. Calculate the cost of each activity in the project (level 3). Consider the standard cost of a skilled labour as 20/hr, unskilled labour as 10/hr and equipment as 50/hr. (use A4 or A3 sheet as required) 2. Identify and analyse those activities which are expensive, for example Structures; Envelope & claddings; Mechanical & electrical services etc. (max one page) 3. Draw cumulative cost-time curve for each resources and for the project. Comment on the cost profile. (use A4 or A3 sheet as required)

F: Progress Tracking (Max marks 20% of the total marks) 1. Track the project progress after 15 days from the project start date. Explain and comment on the changes to project duration. Use the data provided in Appendix 3 (use A4 or A3 sheet as required). 2. If resources are not available on 1st Monday of each week, identify its effect on the project cost and duration and draw new resource histograms. (use A4 or A3 sheet as required) 3. Calculate EV for the project after 15 days from the project start date.

Note: Start the project on 1st jan 2009. Use default UK working calendar (i.e. Saturdays and Sundays are non working days, 8 working hours in a day) Use resource unit as decimal. Use fixed duration and set unit as days. Clearly identify each part of the answers to the questions. Use header and footer to clearly indicate what the chart or graph is showing

Appendix 2

Activity relationship definition

Activity relationship Finish-to-start (FS)

Means

Looks like this in the Gantt chart

Lead (-)

Lag (+)

The finish date of the predecessor task determines the start date of the successor task.

Lead time causes the successor activity to start x

Lag time causes a delay of x days to start the successor activity, irrespective of the relationship between the two activities.

Start-to-Start (SS)

The start date of the predecessor task determines the start date of the successor task.

number of days before the predecessor activity, irrespective of the relationship

Finish-to-finish (FF) Start-to-finish (SF)

The finish date of the predecessor task determines the finish date of the successor task. The start date of the predecessor task determines the finish date of the successor task.

between the two activities.
