Ambush
By Tim OBrien I. Answer the following questions: 1. Is the setting important to the development of the story? How does the setting affect the incident? The setting is very important in the development of any story because it not only exposes the place in which the action occurs it also concerns the complete physical environment of a story. It exposed the time, duration of an action, geographical location, religious, political and social conditions, occupation and the daily manners of living of the characters, the national and locals factors and the season. The setting give that necessary intense that captures the attention of all yours sense. I considers the setting as the principally tools with which the author transport your imagination to a specific place, epoch with real feelings and problems. Also, it is responsible of that special emotional and imaginary connection with the story. In the story of Ambush, the setting owns the most important characteristic in the story revealing the physical and strong intense of the Vietnam War. It exposes the extreme conditions the soldiers face as a plague of mosquitoes, insomnia and personals frustrations. Also, it emphasizes the fog of the environment with the appearing of an unknown young man in the dark night of a platoon justifying a scary feeling and the animal defending nature. 2. Where does the climax occur? The climax is the point where there is a significant change which solves the conflict for better or worse. I considers as the climax of this story, when the protagonist throw the grenade

and kill the unknown young man. For this action, he releases all pressure losing his emotional control and at the same time he takes an everlasting remorse. 3. Mention three conflicts in the story and explain. Man vs. Nature: This conflict is presents when he tries to fight against the human natural instinct to kill and defend. At last, those instincts capture all his sense making him to kill an unguarded and innocent man of war. Also, this event presents the inevitable death of all humans being. Man vs. Himself: This conflict is presents when he expressed his own battle to be a good soldier and protect his country. He fears to consider as a coward. Also, it establishes in the struggles of a father to protect the innocent, good and idealistic view his daughter have of him. Man vs. Man: This conflict is present in the battle between the protagonist against the undefended man. 4. Describe the protagonist. How do you know what he is like? Is he a round character? The protagonist is presents as a sensible, rational, protective and unsecured person. Also, he is narrates as a good father who dont want his daughter to changes her perfect, good and idealistic view of him. I consider him as a person who is frustrated with himself for being defeated by his animal instinct to kill. I assume this characteristic by his actions and thoughts. I considers him as a dynamic character because he change to be rational of his action to be automatic and then rational again accepting his responsibility of have kill someone.

5. Point of View: What is the effect in the story?

This story presents a first person omniscience point of view because the author is presents as the narrator and protagonist. This gives to story an effect of a narration. This make us thing that the event was real and he was the one who can controlled his fears and kill that innocent man and can tell this true to his daughter. He is a perfect example of how a reasonable man can turn into an animal or a soldier whos committed inexplicable and cruel acts. This point of view give a personal relates and give to the readers the opportunity to infer different perspectives of his acts. 6. What is the theme in the story? This story presents how the feeling of obligation toward ones family and country are stronger influences than ones owns rationality. It reflects the strong unity of a man with his natural instinct of an animal and how easy we can lose our control and turns ourselves in someone we can recognized. Sometimes is the power of guilty and responsibility whose impulse us to do things that voluntary we dont want to do and explains those strange justifications is a difficult thing.
