Supporting Learning and Leadership with Technology

Catherine E. Rosario EDU697: Capstone: A Project Approach Professor Keith Pressey January 17, 2013

What is appropriate to use in an elementary integrated classroom?

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

Facilitates multisensory learning in a teamwork exercise for a math problem or writing a class story

Interactive White Board/ Smart Board

Learning occurs by doing and can only be more effective with hands-on assistive technology software (Lever-Duffy, & McDonald, 2011) as well as be absorbed into the brain more efficiently.

A tool with endless software capabilities that can be used in large or small group instruction

IPAD

A tool with endless software capabilities that can be used in small group or individual instruction

Learning occurs by doing and can only be more effective with hands-on assistive technology software (Lever-Duffy, & McDonald, 2011) as well as be absorbed into the brain more efficiently.

MICROPHONE (WIRED/WIRELESS)
Wired/handheld microphones

may (not as practical-difficult to walk around classroom or utilize their hands) but can be shared with students when their turn to talk Wireless can be worn on the lapel, over the head, as a headset or around the neck as a pendant. Lapel and headset types need to be connected to a belt pack transmitter, the pendant type and some athletic headsets are complete microphone and transmitter units. This allows for students to hear the teacher or their peers better through the connected speaker system (next shared technology)

SPEAKERS
Speakers in the

classroom can make it easier for all students to hear the teacher, especially those with hearing impairments. The sound system can also be linked to headphones or special hearing aides to assist those students with special hearing needs Unfortunately if the speaker system fails, the microphone is pointless as well.

VIDEO CAMERA
Allows the teacher to create short

or long videos to share with the class to enhance instruction and learning The students could also have guided access of the camera to create their own videos as learning documentation An application could include documentation of behaviors, such as for a student IEP This tool could also be used to evaluate the instruction of the teacher at various times throughout the school year or even for the teacher to critique themselves.

The benefits of these cameras include another means for assessing students understanding of concepts beyond worksheets and tests. Besides a teachers record, the videos provide a digital record for parents and administrators to show a students successes or areas which need improvement (Wetzel, 2012)
