JOTA ACTIVITY #3 SEMAPHORE

Sometimes when talking on the radio, it is difficult to understand the other

person. Often there is interference or perhaps you cant quite read the
other persons accent. In these instances, it helps to spell important words.
The trouble is that many letters sound the same like C B D and V.
To make things clearer, we use whole words to stand for each letter. This
is called the Phonetic Alphabet The alphabet below is what you will most
likely hear used during JOTA.
Thing to try:
1. Write down your name using the phonetic alphabet. Memories the words
and practice saying it aloud. You can also say in when you talk on the radio.

Radio isnt the only way of communicating over distance.

Long before radio became common, messages were
transmitted via two brightly colored flags held in a
special position for each letter of the alphabet.
Most commonly used by sailors sending messages
between ships and to shore, semaphore is still
sometimes used today.
If you look at the chart, you will see that Semaphore
isnt so hard. If you move you arms in a series of circular
motions, you can send each letter. Careful though!
There are two letters J and Y that seem to be out of
sequence.
Try learning the semaphore alphabet. It looks hard at
first but it you concentrate, youll get it right.
