Lindbladsuperoperator
FromWikipedia,thefreeencyclopedia
TheLindbladsuperoperatorisoftenusedtoexpressthequantummasterequationforadissipativesystem. Inthecanonicalformulationofquantummechanics,asystem'stimeevolutionisgovernedbyunitarydynamics.Thisimpliesthatphasecoherenceis maintainedthroughouttheprocess,andisaconsequenceofthefactthatallparticipatingdegreesoffreedomareconsidered.However,anyreal physicalsystemisnotabsolutelyisolated,andwillinteractwithitsenvironment.Thisinteractionwithdegreesoffreedomexternaltothesystem resultsindissipationofenergyintothesurroundings,andrandomizationofphase.Thislattereffectisthereasonquantummechanicsisdifficultto observeonamacroscopicscale.Moreso,understandingtheinteractionofaquantumsystemwithitsenvironmentisnecessarytounderstanding manycommonlyobservedphenomenalikethespontaneousemissionofatoms,ortheperformanceofmanyquantumtechnologicaldevices,likethe laser. Certainmathematicaltechniqueshavebeenintroducedtotreattheinteractionofaquantumsystemwithitsenvironment.Oneoftheseistheuseof thedensitymatrix,anditsassociatedmasterequation.Whileinprinciplethisapproachtosolvingquantumdynamicsisequivalenttothe SchrdingerpictureorHeisenbergpicture,itallowsmoreeasilyfortheinclusionofincoherentprocesses,whichrepresentenvironmental interactions.Thedensityoperatorhasthepropertythatitcanrepresentaclassicalmixtureofquantumstates,andisthusvitaltoaccuratelydescribe thedynamicsofsocalledopenquantumsystems.
