Baptism
Baptismal Preparation for parents and godparents: 7 8:30 pm the last Monday of the month. Call for Reservations. Baptisms are usually the first Sunday of the month.

Anointing of the Sick

Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Reconciliation and First Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

Matrimony

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest; sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Dear Parishioners,
If we live the Baptism we have received in Jesus Holy Spirit, our happiness, our joy, and even our redemption is assured. Even though 2014 is already forecasted to repeat some of the challenges of 2013, all of us at St. Rita should feel all the more determined to make the pastoral life and ministry of our parish as vibrant as everprecisely because challenging times beg the motivation and strength that we stand to gain and to share by our being Church, by our being faith-filled and hope-filled. From the water of our Baptism comes the Spiritthe Spirit of understanding and knowledge, of counsel and fortitude, of wisdom and piety, and of a holy fear of the Lord. More than looking for those gifts of the Holy Spirit to somehow fall on us, the true Christian looks and prays for those gifts to come through us for the sake of building up Gods kingdom on Earth. What Isaiah declares about Gods Servant, Jesus, is true for each and every one of the baptized: I, the Lord, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand. On this solemnity of Jesus baptism by John in the Jordan River, I feel a certain excitement as pastor of St. Rita. It is a feeling of our parish growing and emerging as an effective and living Roman Catholic faith community, ready to be strong in witness and desire to serve. It is the assurance that a parish that proclaimed a pastoral plan in 2006 and that has already made great strides in its implementation, is now poised to further that plan by establishing a firm foundation for our expanding ministries. All of this, of course, so that we may experience the same Holy Spirit that hovered over Our Lord to say likewise, This is my beloved St. Rita Parish in whom I am well pleased!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Through the centuries, artists and craftspeople have depicted Jesus baptism in the Jordan River by John. At first in mosaics and frescoes, and later in tapestries, stained glass, and paintings, the scene is familiar. Jesus is standing waist-high in flowing water. Above him, standing on dry land, John the Baptist pours water over Jesus. The first artists to depict this were sketching from memory. This is exactly how most people were baptized in the early days: as adults, standing or kneeling in the water, with water poured over their heads. Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co.

First ReadingIsaiah speaks of the Servant whom the LORD upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7). PsalmThe Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29). Second ReadingJesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38). GospelA voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Matthew 3:13-17).

Every year, close to the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25), and before the feast of the Chair of St. Peter (February 22), the cause of Church unity is commended to Christians everywhere. When baptized people become Catholic, we speak of them as being received into full communion. That means we already share a communion in faith in many ways, including the Word of God. Many Protestant denominations have received and revised the three-year cycle of readings first arranged by Catholics in the early 1970s. Therefore, many of our neighbors who are not Catholic are celebrating and reflecting on the same readings we are savoring on most Sundays of the year. This makes for a new spirit of cooperation among preachers of the gospel, and gives hope that the cause of reunion, desired by Christ, has great vitality at the table of Gods Word, and will one day lead to unity at the table of the Lords Body and Blood.

Clear your calendar for Saturday, February 8the date for the Guilds famous card party! In addition to uninterrupted time to play bridge-or bunko-or mah jongor a game you might bring, there will be a delicious lunch and the satisfaction of contributing to one of the oldest organizations in the Parish. The card party is our major fundraiser for the Guild, which uses proceeds to finance many gifts to the Parishhave you noticed the new albs?and to various needy organizations in the Archdiocese. A perfect time to donate some of your used items that were replaced this past Christmas by new stuff! The Goodwill truck will be here to accept your donations of clothing, toys, books, bedding anything except large furniture or large appliances. Last year we filled the truckand Goodwill presented Youth Ministry with a check for almost $1200, which enabled Team Leaders to attend workshops and other leadership programs.

Respect Life Rosary

Wednesday, January 22, 2014 marks the 41st Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decisions. The Knights of Columbus SGV Chapter will hold their annual Respect Life Rosary in front of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Building, 125 S. Grand Avenue, Pasadena 91101. This peaceful one-hour event begins at Noon. All are invited to attend to pray the Rosary.

A New Year Resolution for a Good Steward

Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. Matthew 10:8 The gospel challenges us to be good stewards. As the ministries of St. Rita Parish Community grow and the good work cultivated by these ministries increases, so do the expenses. The mission and ministries are continued through your generous support. Listed below are some suggestions for ways that you can resolve to be a good steward in 2014. Be a planned giver. Instead of just donating what is in my pocket or purse this year, Ill make giving to my Church part of my planned budget. Be a priority giver. This year, Ill make giving to my Church a top priority in my planning. Be a percentage giver. This year, Ill designate a percentage of my income for Gods work. Start the year by answering the 2013 Year End Giving request. If you havent made your Year End Giving donation, there is still time. All donations are welcome and deeply appreciated!

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community. Being a registered parishioner is a requirement for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals.
