Have you heard the song If I were a boy? I think you maybe hear it at one point in your life. This famous song was composed by Beyonce who is well-known singer from United States and used If to suppose a situation to become a boy in this song. Sometimes we also use it. Then, what is the meaning of If ? Using If means to express the unrealistic situations that do not happen or did not happen in the present or the past. People, at once, have an experience to imagine the condition that is opposite to now e.g, if I made a lot of money, I would travel all around the world, I would go whenever I want to see if I could fly the sky like a bird, and etc. I also had an experience to use it that would not be come true in my life. When I was an elementary school student as sixth grades, by accident I, suddenly, got an offer to go abroad - America - to enter a foreign middle school. One of deaconesses in my church who is intimate with my mother proposed the position; entering a middle school in USA to improve my English skill and expand my horizons, out of a little pond that I have lived in 13 years. It made me really excited! The reason is that I had no experience to go abroad, so I wanted it. It, however, was canceled because there was a term between the date of departure and the start of class. There was no house to stay during the term. Even if there would be a room for living a few months, my parents was nervous about the fact that a little girl would live in there alone and did not want to do that.

After that, many years passed, and now, I sometimes imagine the moment, when I was 13 years old, during the elementary school student, just a little girl, who was not know anything about something. If my parents agreed? If I accepted the proposal from the deaconess? If I had gone to USA, I would have lived a very different life learning English intonation, pronunciation, grammar, sentence, word, phrase, morphemes. Also, I would have gotten foreign friends a lot and along with them and all knowledge in English. Seen in this sight, by now, I would become totally an English girl who can speak English naturally - so I extremely regret about that time. In my opinion about If , according to my example, to imagine not happened story can bring regret to people. There is an idiom Let sleeping dogs lie it means making something big by touching it. We would have not felt regret if we had not used If. Would we be happier than using it if we did not use the word If ? By using it, we became to have a hope that never be accomplished like an ostrich has a dream to fly. Therefore, before we said if , we should try to devoted to the present, in now.
