    The Diggers Story

    What story would the statue tell?

    Many years ago I was a young man who went to fight in a war in a faraway place.

    When I went to the war I was

    !only 19 years old. !a young man of 25. !a father of five young children.

    Before the war I worked as !a farmer. !a logger. !a miner.

    I said goodbye to my !mother and father. !friends and family. !wife and children.

    Before I got to the war !I joined the Light Horse Brigade. !I learnt to become a soldier in Egypt.

    I fought in battles !at Gallipoli in Turkey. !in Flanders Fields in France. !in many places.

    The war was horrible because !I missed my family. !it was a frightening place. !many of my friends were killed.

    The war went on for a long time

    !but I was sent home when I got injured. !but I was finally sent home. !but it finally ended.

    After the war I felt


    ! happy to see my family again. ! glad to be safe again. ! sad because so many of my friends had died. ! lonely because I didnt want to talk about the horrible things I had seen.
