JR. LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE SAVING THE WORLD THROUGH

February 8th9th Decatur Conference Center


Become a superhero when you participate in the upcoming Jr. Leadership Conference on February 8-9th at the Decatur Conference Center, Decatur, IL At the Jr. Leadership Conference (JLC), 7th and 8th grade 4-Hers will experience what it takes to become a super leader. Workshops will include: Picture & Video Editing, Renewable Energy & Wind Power, Stereotypes First Impressions Arent Always Accurate, SMART Goals, and Learn How to be an Original. Cost for the conference is $135 and includes all meals, lodging and conference supplies. One may register online at: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/state4h/ events/juniorleadership2014.cfm before Jan. 20. Only 90 registrations are allowed, so register early. A first-time partial scholarship is also available, from the Illinois 4-H Foundation. Please contact your local Extension office for more information regarding the scholarship application.

SPEAKING FOR ILLINOIS 4-H TRAINING JANUARY 11TH


The next Speaking for Illinois 4-H training is set for Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Springfield. This is an opportunity for older 4-H members to help Extension staff with presentations to civic groups, county board members, donors, and legislators. SFI4-H trains 4-H members, age 14 and older, in public presentation skills, Positive Youth Development and facts to share with stakeholders as they tell their 4-H story. SFI4-H youth are also invited to help at the spring Legislative Connection. Registration is posted at: http:/web.extension.illinois.edu/ state4h/members/leadership_sfi4h.cfm. The registration fee for training is $10 and includes lunch. Deadline to register is January 3rd.

UPCOMING STATE EVENTSSAVE THE DATES!


4-H GREAT DEBATE will be held Friday evening, March 7 through Saturday afternoon, March 8 at the State House Inn and State Capitol Building in Springfield. This event is open to high school 4-H teens. Youth will sign up for a mock bill and research that bill prior to the conference. Once at the conference each participant works in a group to make final preparations for the debate of their bill. Delegates may also run for the office of Speaker of the House or Clerk of the House. Participants learn about the legislative process and how Illinois government works, while debating in the House Chambers on Saturday. STATE 4-H ROBOTICS COMPETITION will be held May 3, 2014 at the U of I in Champaign, This event is open to all 4-H youth ages 9-18 who would like to compete. Teams must have at least three members. Details on this years team challenge will be released February 1. THE ILLINOIS 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAM will hold it first STATE SHOOT on May 31, 2014 at the Brittany Shooting Park, Bunker Hill, IL. Illinois 4-H members ages 14-18 and enrolled in shooting sports will be able to compete in the shooting disciplines of recurve archery, compound archery, shotgun, air rifle, and .22 rifle. Teams of four in each shooting discipline will be selected to represent Illinois at the National 4-H Invitation Competition to be held in late June in Grand Island, Nebraska. ILLINI SUMMER ACADEMIES will be held June 21-25 at the University of Illinois in Champaign. ISA allows teens an opportunity to explore a college major, including hands on activities planned by University faculty, staff and graduate students .

Birth, Ownership and Tattoo Dates for Illinois State Fair Junior Show
STEERS: Calved on or after January 1, 2013 Owned & personally cared for by exhibitor since February 1, 2014 Tattooed On or between the last Saturday in January (January 25, 2014) and March 15, 2014. In addition to tattooing, steers that will be going to state fair are to be tagged with the electronic ID tags. BARROWS: Regular Barrows Farrowed on or after January 15, 2014 and must be the property of the exhibitor by June 1, 2014. No weighing and tattooing required but must submit ear notches when making entry for ISF Premiere Barrows Farrowed on or after February 10, 2014 and must have been the property of the exhibitor by June 1, 2014 Weighed and Tattooed February 10 to April 15, 2014 Tattooed within 35 days of birth and not weigh more than 1.0 lbs./day of age Junior exhibitors can purchase nominated barrows SHEEP WETHERS: Both Premiere & Live Show Wethers Lambed on or after January 1, 2014 Ownership Date May 15, 2014 Weighed & Tattooed between March 15 and May 15, 2014 Weigh/Tattoo procedures for Open & Jr. Premiere & Live Show Wethers: All lambs and meat goats to be exhibited at the State Fair MUST be taken to one of the statewide locations for weighing and tattooing. Each lamb will be tagged with an electronic ID tag, tattooed, weighed, and recorded on Lamb Nomination Forms from Dan Jennings. Specific information regarding each of the weigh-in locations & procedures will be forthcoming. MEAT GOATS: (ALL MEAT GOAT WETHERS MUST BE TATTOOED AT REGIONAL SHEEP PROCESSING SITES). Wethers Born on or after October 1, 2013 Registered and tattooed in name of exhibitor only by May 15, 2014 Ownership dates for Kids & Yearlings not in milk May 15, 2014

Beef Heifers and Cows: Heifers Age requirement is from September 1, 2012 to March 31, 2014 (w/ addition of Senior Yearling class) Owned and personally cared for by exhibitor since June 1, 2014 Performance Cows Cows must be born before September 1, 2012 (Cow-Calf Class only) Owned and personally cared by exhibitor since January 1, 2014 Swine Gilts: Age requirement is farrowed on or after January 1, 2014 Owned by exhibitor since June 1, 2014 Sheep Ewes & Rams: Age requirement for yearling ewes is from January 1, 2013 to August 31, 2013 Age requirement for ewe lambs is after September 1, 2013 Age requirement for ram lambs is after January 1, 2014 Owned and personally cared for by exhibitor since June 25, 2014 Dairy Cows and Heifers: No age requirements Calves and Heifers Owned since June 1, 2014 Cows Owned since January 1, 2014 Horse and Pony: May 1 Place on file in Extension Office or w/ FFA Advisor copies of ownership and/or lease papers for all animals that the member plans to exhibit at the ISF Junior Horse Show. MAY 15 Copies of the ownership and/or lease papers and one set of photos sent to State Fair for entry verification. Dogs: Dogs must be owned or leased by June 1, 2014 Dairy Goats: Kids and Yearlings not in milk must be owned by exhibitor only by June 1, 2014. Milking Does must be owned by exhibitor only by January 1, 2014. Meat Goats All meat goats (wethers and all breeding animals) are to be owned by exhibitor only by May 15, 2014. Rabbits, Pygmy Goats & Poultry: Does -- By June 1 of the year exhibiting All others -- Out of stock owned by the exhibitor prior to June 1.

4-H PREMIER LCP AWARD PROGRAM

Each year, the Illinois Farm Bureau and their Affiliates help Illinois 4-H recognize 10 outstanding 4-H members by sponsoring the Illinois 4-H Premier LCP Award. The award is for 4-H members age 17 or older by December 1, 2013. LCP stands for Leadership, Citizenship, and Professionalism. The application focuses on leadership positions the member has held; participation in county, state, and national events; 4-H goals they have set and reached; and reference evaluations. Each county is allowed to submit two applications. The top ten youth selected on the state level are invited to a 3-day leadership conference in April and are recognized with plaques at the Illini Summer Academies banquet in June. Applications are available at the State 4-H website at: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/ state4h/members/recognition_awards.cfm Applications must be turned into your local Extension office no later than December 20, 2013.

4-HERS NAMED TO SIU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PROGRAMP4


Twenty-nine students have been selected for the P4 Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program including 4-H members David Bruns from Christian County and Lindsay Stine from Macon County. This program is a partnership between Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the Springfield Public Schools (SPS). This is the fifth year of the Pipeline program with a new cohort of high school students who are eager to learn about the life of medical students and physician careers. These Pipeline students represent a bright future for health care in central and southern Illinois. Students were selected by a committee who reviewed letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a summary of volunteer, school and community activities, all of which needed to reDavid Bruns and Lindsay Stine flect superior academic performance, high levels of motivation Following the white coat ceremony and a sincere interest in pursuing medical careers. Students will participate in three different sessions throughout the year. The sessions are held after school for three hours and include participation in medical school style curriculum; introduction to problem based learning (PBL); tours and shadowing, and interactions with SIU students and faculty. David Bruns, a 5 year member of the Pana Tri-County Kids 4-H club, states The P4 program is fun, exciting, and a great experience for my future as a medical student. It has been fun getting to meet and work with new people and get to talk with actual medical students. It was an honor to be given a seat in the program and I look forward to the next 4 years Im in the program. Lindsay Stine, a 7 year 4-H member from Macon County, says "P4 is a really wonderful program that has helped me gain experience and allowed me to participate in classes that will prepare me for my future as a health care provider."

This club will meet Tuesday nights from 6:30pm-8pm for 5 weeks and finish out the six week program with a Space Mission trip to St. Louis Challenger Learning Center. More details to come!
