c. Write the phasor expression for the voltage in the line, assuming forward z propagation, and real voltage amplitude V0 . The values as found above need not be included; their symbols will suce.

d. Write the real instantaneous form of the voltage wave.

Problem 2. (35 points) In the transmission line circuit below, we have RL = 2Rg , and each line section is one quarter wavelength long (with wavelength as measured in each section).

b. Determine, in terms of indicated parameters, the input impedance, Zin2 .

c. With Rg = 25 ohms, Z01 = 50 ohms, Z02 = 100 ohms, what value of ZL will result in half of the power supplied by Vs0 dissipated by ZL ?

d. With the physical lengths (in meters) of the two line sections xed as in parts a through c, the operating frequency is now doubled. In this case, what value of ZL will result in half of the incident power dissipated by ZL ?

Problem 3. (30 points) A voltage signal propagates in a lossy transmission line in which = 0.03 m1 , and whose length is 20m. The line loss is suciently low, such that its characteristic impedance is approximately real, and is Z0 = 50 . A complex impedance, ZL = 50 j 50 terminates the line. If the input power (at z = 0) to the line is 1.0 dBm: a. Determine the line attenuation coecient, A, in dB/m.

b. Determine the power in dBm that reaches the load just before reection from it, and then express that result in mW.

c. Evaluate the complex reection coecient at the load, L .

d. Determine the power in dBm that is dissipated by the load.

e. Determine the net power loss in dB for the wave that returns to the input after having reected from the load (one round trip plus one reection).

Problem 1. (35 points) The lossless transmission line shown here is initially-charged to voltage V0 . The terminating resistor values are RG = RL = Z0 . Both switches are simultaneously closed at time t = 0. The one-way transit time is T .

a. Determine expressions for the voltage waves initiated from each end when the switches are closed, expressing your result in terms of given parameters. Also, indicate these waves on the gure.

b. On the reection diagrams below, sketch the voltage and current waves, carefully labeling them as to their values (in terms of given parameters) and using the appropriate signs in all cases. Note that certain parts of the diagrams may not be needed.

c. Using your completed diagrams of part b, plot the voltage across the left-hand resistor (RG ), VG , and the current through the right-hand resistor (RL ), IL , during the time interval 0 < t < 2T .

d. What is the voltage at the midpoint of the line (z = `/2) at time T ?

Problem 2. (35 points) A lossless transmission line of characteristic impedance, Z0 , is terminated by a purely inductive load of impedance, jZ0 .

a. Find the driving point (or input) impedance, Zin , at a point that is one-quarter wavelength in front of the load, as shown in the above gure.

Now, a second impedance, Z0 (same as the line characteristic impedance), is connected across the line at the /4 location as shown below. The net load impedance at that point will be the parallel combination of this second impedance and the input impedance as found in part a.

b. Find the net load impedance at the /4 position, ZT . Simplify your result as much as possible.

c. Input power, Pin , is sent toward the load, where it reects, leading to output power, Pout , as shown. Assuming that the line itself is lossless, nd Pout in terms of Pin , and express this result as a loss in decibels.

d. What fraction of the input power is dissipated by the load?
