Direct Services Program (DSP)
Direct Services Program of CWS Cambodia has two sub-projects that currently operate in three
different provinces; Water and Sanitation project is covering two of Svay Rieng province and Village
Based Community Development project is covering Kompong Thom and Preah Vihear province.

1. Svay Rieng Water and Sanitation Cooperation Project (WatSan)


The overall objective is to expand the coverage of improved water supplies and sanitation facilities
to underserved population of Romeas Hek and Romduol Districts, Svay Rieng Province, and to
improve health and hygiene practices related to water bone diseases and diseases and sanitation.

 17 coordination/ consultative meetings on CWS’s


donor visits, Arsenic testing, role and responsibilities
of WSUGs, CD concept, and regular meeting
between CWS, PDRD and CDFs were held with
director of provincial department of Rural
Development, commune chiefs, WSUGs, PDRD and
CDFs. In total, 31 WSUGs in 31 villages received CD
concepts and 100 hand pumps were tested Arsenic.

 Nine trainings on roles and responsibilities, CD


concept and family assessment were conducted for
241 WSUG members (100 women), ten CCs (one
woman), 15 VLs, 7 CDFs, 51 villagers and PDRD
counterparts.

 31 trainings (5 trainings and 26 refresher trainings) on

hand pump well maintenance and repairing, clean
water and sanitation conducted to 766 community
people (377 women), 4 school teachers and 84 pupils
(44 school-girls) from Bos Mon Leu primary school
and 31 villages of Rumdoul district.

 291 bio-sand filters were installed and provided to 262


vulnerable families in ten villages, four primary
schools, three pagodas and four commune halls for a
total of 3,363 beneficiaries (1,565 women).

 33 latrines were constructed and provided to 33


households in Bos Mon and Pong Tuek communes of
Romduol district that benefit 178 beneficiaries (88
women, 42 children).

 21 hand pump wells were constructed for 135


beneficiaries (69 women) including 32 children living
in Bos Mon and Pong Tuek communes.

2. Village Based Community Development Project (VBCD)
The overall objective is to develop the communities’ capcity to define their development direction
and improver them to meet their basic need; access to basic services; sustainable livelihood
opportunities and food security in Kompong Thom and Preah Vihear provinces.

 7 coordination meetings were attended and


conducted between April and June 2008 by Kompong
Thom and Preah Vihear Project staff on various
subjects such as; Environment’s day celebration by
PDoE on June 05, Society and Market for Poor
People Economic with supported by Oxfam GB on
June 06 at provincial hall, non formal education
facilitators training, role and responsibilities and how
to cooperate with PDoH and Operational Health
districts and Health Centers, home garden and animal
raising with PDoA regarding to support farmers living
in CWS target villages, Chaom Khsant Development
Strategy Plan organized by Ministry of Land
Management, Urban Planning and construction on
June 13 at provincial hall, and the Universal
Education Campaign organized by DoE of Chaom
Khsant district to raise fund and school materials for
poorest schoolchildren.

 There were three times food nutrition distribution to


886 children under 24 months, 222 pregnant women,
273 lactating mothers, 875 mothers of children aged
from 6-24 months and 67 VHVs in average in 30
target villages of the Kompong Thom and Preah
Vihear Project. A total 21,166 Kg of CSB powder,
3,564 Kg of PWB powder, 19,604 Kg of white rice,
and 1,252 Kg of vegetable oil and 3,272 Kg of sugar
were distributed. Additionally, 43 VHVs in Preah
Vihear province received 43 health counseling cards
to train community people about MCH.

 14 open wells, 89 water filters (68 BioSand and 21


ceramic), 16 hand pumps and 3 household latrines
were constructed and provided to 519 households in

19 target villages (12 Preah Vihear target) of five
communes (Sraeung, Ti Pou, Rumdaoh Srae, Teuk
Kraham and Choam Ksant ) in Kompong Thom and
Preah Vihear provinces.

 90 pupils (32 schoolgirls) living in 12 target villages of


CWS Preah Vihear ceased their study after their
parents are not able to support them. Now they
returned to classes with school materials such as
uniforms, books, bags and rulers provided by CWS

 CWS provided 212, 3600.00 riel to community people


for repairing and constructing two different bridges
crossing the streams with 50 x 3.5M and 16 x 3M in
Yeang and Tuek Kraham communes of Preah Vihear
province and other two roads in Tnaot Chuor and
Boeng Khvek villages.

Moreover, two community meeting halls in Sraeung


and Beng communes (12 x 12M and 10 x 6M) were
constructed with financial support from CWS. Total
construction cost is 706, 8500.00 Riel including 427,
0000.00 riel contributed by community people.

 The Preah Vihear Project supported two staff (one


PDRD and CWS staff) to attend the Household water
quality testing training from 28-30 May at Pannasastra
University of Cambodia conducted by CAWST and
hosted by CWS Cambodia.

 26 vulnerable families in Preah Vihear target villages


received 650 KG of white rice, 26 mosquito nets, 26
bottles of cooking oil, and 260 canned fishes, 26
packs of salt, 26 water buckets and 26 bottles of fish
sauce.

 17 non formal teachers (three women) from target


villages of Kompong Thom and Preah Vihear project
received support from CWS to attend 10-day training
of pedagogical skills training, second module
conducted by PDoEYS from 12-21 May.

 641 community people (537 women) in Preah Vihear


target villages received education on mother and child
health care. Also, other 1,212 community people
(1010 women) in 24 target villages of Kompong Thom
and Preah Vihear project received awareness training
on malaria and dengue fewer.

 22 participants (11 women) including one village


leader, 2 VDC members and 16 VPs from Tumnob
village of Sraeung commune participated in one day
training on Vulnerable People Assessment.

 28 participants (four women); 13 from Trapaing Trom


village of Ti Pou commune, and 15 from Choam
Boeng village of Sraeung commune received two
training courses on well construction.

 Four quarterly meetings; three meetings with VDCs
and one with VHVs were conducted for 63
participants (23 VDC members, 12 village leaders,
two commune councilors, and 26 VHVs).

 Two separate trainings on gender and domestic


violence were conducted in collaboration with
Provincial Department of Women Affairs at Tumnob
village and Thmei villages with 72 participants (48
women) participated.

 A First Aid Training was conducted in cooperation with


CRC from 28 April to 02 May for 24 Red Cross
Volunteers (12 women) from 12 target villages of
Sraeung and Ti Pou communes.

 The Kompong Thom Project cooperated with


Provincial Department of Agriculture conducted a two-
day training on home garden from 17-18 June for 26
farmers (18 women) from four villages of Sraeung
commune and another awareness raising on Animal
Vaccination to 58 community people and provided
282 cows in Choam Boeng and Tnaot Chuor villages
of Sraeung commune.

 One vulnerable family (five household members


including three women) in Thmei village of Ti Pou
commune received 161,900.00 riel to setup a small
business in their community. Additionally, nine farmers
(three women) from three target villages received SRI
training and 12 vulnerable families received 50 fruit
seedlings from Preah Vihear Project staff.

 Eight project staff (three women) attended five day


training on Creative Holistic Action Research
Relationship for Transformation (CHART), module 2
and 5 at VBNK Phnom Penh and Sihanouk Ville.
Also, six project staff (two women) attended a five
-day training on peace building in our life at Sihanouk
Ville. US$107,904.53 US$16,185.68
