Writing Media Creative Literature Research Group Dynamics Public Performance Assignment/Activity:
Id never seen a legitimate, professional live play before my Live Play Review for freshman year. As interesting as it seemed to me, I never had the drive or reason to commit and view one. When Ms. Jeral asked me to write a review for a live play, I felt outclassed. Most of my classmates had not only seen plays, but also critiqued, directed, and acted in them. I knew that this paper would be a challenge due to my lack of experience and knowledge in theater. The play that I picked to view for my review was Detroit by Lisa DAmour. During the play, I was faced with the immediate problem of taking notes. Having very little idea of what should be noteworthy, I took notes on just about every aspect of the play. Upon sitting down to write, I took my list of notes and picked through them for useful content. Once I got started writing, ideas and critiques just showed themselves to me. I used the directions and prior course material to their fullest, as they provided stable background information from which I could write. Upon viewing the complete product, I felt accomplished for making something despite my lack of prior experience. The review felt especially important to me because I constantly had opinions to share when I was younger, but they were always invalidated and shooed away due to my general lack of experience and preparation. My play review was concise and professional, and it gave me the skills required to share ideas in a professional and presentable manner. This feels appropriate for my portfolio because it exemplifies my ability to overcome difficulties through will. The fact that I watched this play also deepens my knowledge of Theater, and opens me to a whole new realm of discussion and analysis. I feel most accomplished with my paragraph on the character portrayal, because I find it fascinating that physical depiction can influence human perception. I believe that this paper shows my fluency with word choice. The way that I phrased key concepts in my review made me proud when I reviewed them. I felt like I was able to take the feel of a poem and insert into it the information one might see in a newspaper article. I am especially satisfied with my use of repetition when discussing various comedic scenes in the play. That being said, there were some problems with my writing upon reflection. While my paper was very powerful with its diction and wording, it is still weak in the fact that many of the paragraphs were short and were not as packed with information as I would hope it would be. As a writer, I always find struggle balancing my writing being poetically concise and industrially information-packed. It is easy to write things beautifully and say very much with very little, I find. The problem occurs when I compact things so far that it gets to the point where I run out of things to say before Ive written half of what Im supposed to. I then face the problem of having to put in more spread-out information without making it seem like some fluff with no other purpose other than to make my friends impressed when I show them my paper. In my review of Detroit, I leaned a little bit to the poetic and compact side of things, which made the paper look and feel too short for my taste. This is what I feel is the major weakness of my writing. I also regret that I took poor, generally off topic, and disorganized notes. The notes that I took were nondescript, and I had a lot of trouble discerning any meaning from them weeks later when it was time for me to begin writing my draft. This will not be an issue for my next live play review, as I now have the experience to understand how to take good, organized, usable notes. The CAP can do that to you pretty fast, I must say.
