Primary: American Government, s.v. "Airport delays worsen in United States," Image, UPI, accessed November 24, 2013.

http://americangovernment.abc-clio.com/. Since the September 11 hijackings, security checks have become more extensive. This primary source shows a photo of a woman who is getting her bagged checked. From this source, you can tell that passengers, especially this woman are becoming frustrated. I can tell that she if showing signs of frustration because of her body language. I plan on using this because it shows that even though the security checks are to ensure safety, the people are becoming fed up and the delays are worsening. American Government, s.v. "George W. Bush announces airport security measures," Image, White House, accessed November 24, 2013. http://americangovernment.abc-clio.com/. This primary source shows a picture of George W. Bush greeting the faculty of the OHare Airport located in Chicago. At the same event on September 27, 2001, he made an obligation that he would make efforts to protect America from terrorist attacks. George Bush made a long-term security plan by making the National Guard units protect the U.S. airports. This helped me because it shows that the president did take extensive measures to improve the security of airports. From this source I evaluated that Bush was not aware of the outcomes of his plan were. American History, s.v. "Transportation Security Administration," Image, AP/Wide World Photos, accessed November 24, 2013. http://americanhistory.abc-clio.com/. The Transportation Security Administration or TSA are required to use check passengers by using a wand. This was before full body scanners were placed in airports. From this source I can come up to the conclusion that there is a lot of frustration and disorientation. This photograph is from the Denver International Airport in 2002, which was 11 years ago, before security checks became even more intrusive. This is great primary source because it was taken exactly a year after the 9-11 terrorist attacks and it shows how much things have changed since then. Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society, s.v. "Airport security checkpoint," Image, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, accessed November 24, 2013. http://issues.abc-clio.com/. The image is a primary source because the picture was taken at a security checkpoint at the Miami airport. It shows a passenger that is being screened with a machine that can trace explosives by analyzing the air around the passenger. This is one of the many security checks that the TSA has. This helps me understand that there are many different types of security checks that help ensure that each passenger boarding an airplane is safe. This machine is important because it stops passengers from bringing on any explosives. Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society, s.v. "Full-body scanner," Image, AP/Wide World Photos, accessed November 24, 2013. http://issues.abc-clio.com/.

Even though this picture is not of any airport in America, it is relevant. The picture is useful because ever since the attempted bombing on December 25, 2009, the Netherlands started using full-body scanners on passengers that are departing for the United States. Although the bomber was not from the Netherlands, he passed through Schipol, an airport in the Netherlands. This source I used is important because it shows that not only in the USA are they doing body scan checks, but also in other foreign countries as well. This is a primary source because it is a photograph. Secondary: Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society, s.v. "Airport Body Scanners: The Role of Advanced Imaging Technology in Airline Passenger Screening (2012)," accessed November 24, 2013. http://issues.abc-clio.com/. This source briefly summarizes the importance of body scanners and the bills protecting the rights of the people who go through them. The American all accept the need of body scanners, but some are concerned because of health risks, privacy, and delays. The TSA views the AIT (advanced imaging technology) remotely and giving the pat-down screenings by request, since it is not required. This helped me understand that the TSA is working on being less intrusive during the body scan checks and certain measures are being taken. This is important because there are bills that take not of the concern of privacy and health concerns. This is secondary because it is describing the bill. Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society, s.v. "Airport Security: Enhancing Safety or Violating Privacy?: Overview," accessed November 24, 2013. http://issues.abc-clio.com/. The article puts the pat-down into the category of sexual molestation. In late October 2010, the individuals that wanted to opt-out of the AIT scans had to be given more invasive patdowns. Even though the pat-downs are thought as humiliating or intrusive, the TSA just wants to provide safety for others. This is useful because it show the controversy of the thought of being humiliated over being safe of terrorist attacks. Not only is privacy and issue, but health is also an issue. Health is an issue because of the radiation that the AIT emits. This lead to a day called National Opt-Out Day, which takes place on the day before Thanksgiving. This helped me understand that few people participated on this day, but if it did it would create chaos in the airport because the pat-down take longer. This is secondary because it is describing the situation. Johnston, S. Paul. "Airport." Reviewed by Anthony Chaitin. Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Grolier Online http://gme.grolier.com/article?assetid=0004880-0 (accessed November 24, 2013). The article describes what an airport is, the history of it, and security and terrorism. Airplane hijacking did not start being a problem in 2001, but it has been a leading issue since the 1950s. This helped me understand that security measures were not taken until after 9-11. The TSA did not exist until after the September 11 attacks. From this I learned that it wasnt until January 2002 that systems of screening checked luggage was in place. The systems that they had in 2002 were not like they are today, but they were wither checked by hand or bomb-sniffing dogs. Then on December 31, 2002, explosives-detection machines were placed in airports, but

they often had inaccuracies. This is secondary because it is telling you about all the information on airports. Samhan, Helen Hatab. "Arab Americans." Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Grolier Online http://gme.grolier.com/article?assetid=0014885-0 (accessed November 24, 2013). This article briefly describes the lives and impacts the Arab Americans have left on Americans. This article is important because it points out stereotypes against Arab Americans. Dating back to the 1970s, television and movies has portrayed Arab Americans as terrorists. This useful and important because ever since 9-11 the TSA started to pick out passengers due to their ethnicity or religious appearance, which is unfair and racist. The Arab Americans right to due process has not been given to them. This helped me understand that this has led to Arab Americans to making cultural-awareness materials and diversity training. This is secondary because it is describing the racism Arab Americans face. Yoo, Kwang. "Airport security and passenger screening responsibility." In Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society. ABC-CLIO, 2006-. Accessed November 24, 2013. http://issues.abc-clio.com/. This article describes airports security measures in different countries including America. It also describes who has the authority to do what in certain situations. From this I learned that America is not the only country that has a strict airport security. This helped me understand the topic because effectiveness, efficiency, service quality, and competence in the event of an emergency are taken into the consideration for who is responsible for airport security and passenger screening. This article is a secondary source it is describing how airports are ran.
