Introduction: Water is a vital component of vegetable crop production. An adequate water supply is essential to maximize both quality and crop yield for a given date. It is also an important management tool, enhancing crop establishment, chemical weed control and harvesting of root vegetables. However, water has to be applied at the correct time, in sufficient quantities, but without waste and with sympathy for the environment as a whole. The use of water pumps operated by electricity or gasoline driven is uncommon to farmers nowadays due to its cost in terms of fuel and electric bill. Instead they prefer the laborious and time consuming methods such as manual watering of the plants through pales and cans, portable sprinkler container and others. In Romblon, most water sources are suitable for the crops and vegetables. The most common sources are from river streams, creeks, and irrigation canals. An adequate volume of water flowing from these water sources can possibly use as energy to operate small pump without using of electricity or fuels, thus, addressing the problem on laborious manual irrigation on crops and vegetables of farmers.

Objective of the project: The main objective of the project is to design and develop a fuel-less water pump.

Significance and advantages of the project: The pump is a self-supporting system for pumping water. It is completely mechanical and operates without electricity or fuel. The power to drive is provided by flowing water. There is only one moving part, the swivel coupling, and it is water-lubricated. All parts are non-corrosive and designed to withstand a high degree of stress. There is virtually no maintenance. Water pumped by the unit can be used for household needs, irrigation, ponds, and gardening. It is especially useful in aerating stock tanks and fish tanks since it pumps half water and half air. The pump objectively designs on areas where fuel and electricity sources are limited.

Working Principle: The whole pump unit is set in slow rotation by means of a propeller, which sets in motion by streaming water at axial level. The pump is held in position by a mooring or a stake in the stream bed. On the inside of pump casing is a helically-wound flexible hose. This hose is open at the rear end and attached to a swivel coupling at the front end. The pump revolutions result in an alternate inflow of air and water, which forces water forward via the swivel coupling into the feeder hose which conveys the water to an intermediate storage tank or place on consumption. The pumped water thus oxygenated is supplied in a pulsating form. The materials used guarantee a durable product which allows for rough handling without breaking down. The pump is designed for continuous attendance-free operation far from the place of consumption. As a result, the cost of operation and maintenance is practically non-existent. This pump has a dimension of 2 ft x 3 ft for its diameter and length respectively. At 2 fps water velocity it can handle 500 gallons per day at 20 ft pumping head from the water source. The pump uses -in. inside diameter hose on the inlet and -in. inside diameter on the outlet port.
