Dear Parents,

We are sad to share that Bryan Pineda Rosas, 8th grade student at Summit Middle School, passed away
yesterday. Bryan has been a great student since entering the Summit School District at Upper Blue
Elementary. With the permission of Bryan's family and from a press release issued by the Coroner's
Office and Summit County Public Health, we can share that he had been ill for the past few days and had
tested positive for influenza Type A. An autopsy is being conducted to determine if there were any
underlying medical issues that contributed to his death.

We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Bryan's family. Counselors have been
available today at both Summit Middle School and Summit High School to provide support to staff,
parents and students.

We want to reassure parents that we are working closely with Summit County Public Health in addressing
this situation in our schools. We know that many of you have questions about school operations and the
H1N1 Influenza virus. Please note:

**Summit School District continues to follow the guidance of state and local Public Health
Departments regarding school operations and activities. We are closely monitoring student absenteeism
related to influenza-like illness and sharing this information with these agencies. We are not closing any
schools or canceling any activities due to H1N1 at this time.

**This incident does not lead local health officials to believe that there is any change in the
virulence of the H1N1 Influenza virus. We urge all of our families to continue practicing good personal
hygiene at home and in classrooms: routine hand-washing, coughing into your elbow, etc. Most
importantly, we want students with influenza like illness to stay at home.

**We strongly recommend that adults and children who may fall into a high-risk category for
complications with seasonal flu or H1N1 to seek the guidance from local physicians and healthcare
providers regarding additional precautions. People at high risk include those who are pregnant, have
asthma or diabetes, have compromised immune systems, or have neuromuscular diseases. Please check
out: www.flu.gov for more information.

We will continue to provide updates to our families from Summit County Public Health if the situation
changes or more information becomes available.

Thank you for your support of our staff, families, and students at this difficult time,

Millie Hamner
Superintendent of Schools
