Week Two January 20-26, 2014 My 'teaching lesson' for this second week of class will cover some

e process and content. The following tips are to help you be more successful with the process of learning online and are crucial for the deep understanding in this course. Will you establish a checklist and say, yeah, I did that, and that, and only do the minimum "required" of you, or are you going to be learners (like you want your own students to be) and read everything from everyone, practice inquiry, do research on what you might not understand, ask questions of each other (in the FAQ area), and practice the life-long learning that will make each of you a knowledgeable, effective, and caring teacher? As the instructor, I monitor the system, which shows me how many "hits" you have made, how many "readings" you have done of other's works, and how many "postings" you have done, but it doesnt tell me whether you are truly learning. It is a little strange to look at numbers for these areas but it does give me an indication of your participation in our course (upon which your Participation Grade is based 15%). You are going to get out of this course, what you put into it. And remember, quality in what you say really matters. I read every posting on the Discussion Board, every word written by you on Laulima. The Submit Assignments is where I will assess and give feedback for each of your papers, but I purposely try NOT to comment in the Discussion Board dialogue so as to encourage YOU to take responsibility for this part of class discussions and participation. You need to be reading these weekly lessons from me. As I explained, DrBs Teachings is like you showing up weekly in class; listening to my lectures. You answer a question by sending your answer to my mailbox and I mark your attendance for that week, some of you did not read carefully and did not send your answer the first week attendance question, which concerns me, but I just emailed the class and let people know that status of attendance keeping. Remember I take attendance by that method so you might want to re-read if you read it, but didnt get credit for the first week of class. Once you get the hang of Laulima and Weebly, it will be easier for you to bring depth to your learning, for I understand some of you may be on a high learning curve right now with the technology. But do not let that be an excuse, push yourself to learn quickly and succeed in this multicultural course. Through my research regarding online learning, I found that a key to successful online learning is to give immediate and meaningful feedback on work submitted and I will try and be responsive in doing this. We will be supplementing our class with the Blackboard Collaborate at the beginning, middle and end of our class. It is important for you to help each other with the technology, call on your classmates to assist you through this journey. If you go into the Teacher Education program, it will be a two-year program, and you will belong to a "cohort" which will become an ohana. You will need to work together and support each other and as Lilo said, no one gets left behind when youre ohana. (Okay, so this is an old movie, but one of my favorites, whats your favorite!)

When you respond with your in-depth response to another person (you can reply to every single person with short responses - like - great job, I enjoyed reading your response), but in your one in-depth response, you need to name details with what resonates with you that was said and be specific and not general in your response. You need to relate the material and what was said, make applications to yourself and to your future teaching, and use passages of your readings to emphasize your thoughts and refer to page numbers or slide number. Here is your assignment in detail (abbreviated on the Course Schedule) for this week: Do workbook reading and assignment, Activity 2 (pp. 5-9). This is a self-assessment instrument regarding your intercultural experiences. There are no correct answers so please answer the statements as honestly as possible. There are 32 statements to answer. The scoring for this is a little difficult, but you guys are adults and should be able to figure it out. It took me awhile (I am older) to understand the term reverse the values but once I caught on, it wasnt that difficult. On p. 8 you will list your subscales: C, B, I, A, E, and then your Total ICCS Score in your workbook. Record these scores (sub-scales and total score) in the Discussion Board, but this is not your Wednesday posting and you do not have to read or respond to each others Total ICCS Score. Since you do not respond to each other in the Discussion Board on this Activity, you have until Sunday, January 26 to post. Now if you do not have your book, yet, there is no penalty for posting these scores late. Just make a note you need to do this exercise and post when you do get your book. Discussion Board Posting Assignment Carefully read, absorb, and reflect on the ppt Multicultural Communities by Sonia Nieto (2006). This ppt is found in Resources. Take notes and refer to the slide number when you want to make specific references to the material. Post your comments answering specifically:

What are the effective qualities of a multicultural educator? What are implications of Multicultural Communities? and then point out anything you want to emphasize and remember from this PowerPoint. Post your answers to discussion questions by Wednesday, January 22, 11:55 pm. Read all writings by your classmates and respond in-depth to one person. You can respond to more than one person, but one response needs to be substantial in content and your response should be posted by Friday, January 24. You may want to write your response to these questions in a document where you can save, then copy and paste to the Discussion Board. You dont want to do a wonderful, but lengthy response in the textbox, then lose it due to technical malfunctions. That is the most frustrating thing about using technology and the Discussion Board. So compose your answers to questions and your responses (offline) in a word document then copy and paste to the Board. Besides the Nieto powerpoint, remember to post your scores from Activity 2 in your Workbook.
