African American History Month
In celebration of Black History Month, KRCB is offering several programs, ranging from profiles of important but little known figures in the American stuggle for civil rights to the fascinating documentary series, AfroPop. Enjoy! Civic Life of Nathaniel Colley, Sunday, February 2 at 10:30 pm. Nathaniel Colley, one of Sacramentos earliest African American lawyers, spent 50 years shaping the course of American history, when his passion for education and civil rights brought Colley together with John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Rosa Parks, and Bill Clinton. An Evening with Ursula Burns, Sunday, February 2 at 11 pm. Gwen Ifill profiles the life and career of the business icon Ursula Burns, the first African American woman to head a Fortune 500 company. Evening with Berry Gordy, Wednesday, February 5 at 8 pm. Gwen Ifill interviews entrepreneur, songwriter, record producer, movie director & producer Berry Gordy. Continued on p. 15

AfroPop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange

Monday and Tuesday, February 10, 11, 17, 18 at 9 pm. Dont miss any of these moving documentaries about life in the African diaspora:

Doin It in the Park: Pick-Up Basketball NYC. The

makers of this film visited 180 city basketball courts throughout New York City to uncover the world of pick-up basketball. Playground legends, NBA athletes, and everyday players tell the story and show off their athleticism (and trash-talking) on local basketball courts.

Upaj: Improvise. This documentary tells the story of

68-year-old Das, a master of kathak (a classical dance of North India) and 32-year-old Jason, an African American tap dancer. Working together, theyve created an unlikely artistic friendship that bridges continents, generations, cultures, and communities. American with a Tanzanian father and Korean mother, documents her fathers path back to his family and Chagga culture, discovering both a rich cultural heritage and jarring disconnect on questions of patriarchy and violence.

Dear Member, We continue to receive great news on our nationally distributed programs and series. For a station as small as KRCB to be providing such strong content, as we are, is a big deal. Your support makes it all possible. Natural Heroes, Season 6, is well underway and the number of stations from around the country that are carrying this locally produced show are promising indeed. This season we have a dynamite educational curriculum for teachers K-12 to supplement the show. Check it out at http://naturalheroes.org/educational-resources/. Rebels With a Cause, which KRCB co-produced, will be Nancy Dobbs, President and CEO distributed to PBS stations across the country in March by American Public Television (APT). APT will typically distribute a program if 25 stations commit to carrying it. An incredible 75 stations have already done so. It will be carried during the week of Earth Day in April. Not just big dreams here at KRCB but dreams turned into realities. You make it happen.

African American History Month continued...

Instruments of Change, Wednesday, February 5 at 9 pm. History credits the inception of the Civil Rights Movement to Montgomery, Alabama, in the mid 1950s. However, in Miami as early as 1951, there existed a Fine Arts Conservatory dedicated to bringing music, dance, and art to young black and white students in an integrated environment. This little-known conservatory would challenge segregation and change the lives of many of those who attended the school. Building the Dream, Sunday, February 9 at 11 pm. This documentary recounts the journey of an idea for a national monument honoring Martin Luther King Jr.from a group of friends talking around a kitchen table to the creation of this permanent symbolto ensure Kings Dream will remain alive for future generations. Proclamation of Hope, Wednesday, February 12 at 8 pm. (See description on p. 11) Education of Harvey Gantt, Wednesday, February 12 at 9:30 pm. Although they had long resisted integration, when South Carolinas institutions of higher learning finally opened their doors to African Americans in 1963, they did so in a systematic, nonviolent manner. The story of Harvey Gantt, the first African American student enrolled at Clemson, reveals the different ways integration happened in the United States. The Unforgettable Hampton Family, Wednesday, February 19 at 9:30 pm. This documentary explores how Deacon Clark Hampton, a son of slaves, lifted his twelve children out of poverty by making them into successful musicians. Black History Teleconference, Sunday, February 23 at 11 pm. The 27th Annual Benedict College Black History Teleconference, held live on the campus of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the passing of the Civil Rights Act. It features High School and Benedict College students who will direct questions to prominent African Americans about their ideas, challenges, and lifetime achievements.
