John 8:12-30

January 26, 2014 Jesus was teaching in the temple when He was interrupted by some of the scribes and Pharisees; they had found a woman in adultery and wanted to know whether He would obey Moses and stone her or disobey and be the friend of sinners. But Jesus didnt fall for the trap and instead only said, Let he who is without sin throw the first stone. When they realized their hypocrisy they all left until only He and the woman stood before the temple crowd. Since there was no one left to accuse her, then neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. The woman leaves and Jesus is left standing before the rest of the temple audience: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. In verse 20 were told that Jesus was standing in the treasury when He said this. This area was in plain sight of four lampstands that stood 86 feet tall. You can picture Jesus pointing at one of these as He speaks.

This isnt the first time light has been mentioned in John. Earlier it was said that In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not (Jn. 1:4-5). It also said, that was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world (Jn. 1:9). A little later were told, And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God (Jn. 3:19-21). So on one hand we see that the Light is hated by wicked men because it shines on their evil deeds and exposes them for what they are. This was the case with the womans accusers. He shined on them and they were convicted. But rather than showing the repentance that comes with godly sorrow, they went home to plan another way to kill Him; they want to extinguish the Light. But theres another side to the Light thats shown in how Christ deals with the woman. First theres he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness . This goes with go and sin no more. Shes seen the Light and will no longer walk in darkness. He that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth (Jn. 12:35). If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch (Mt. 15:14). The commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life (Pr. 6:23). To heed His instruction is to follow the way of life. The wicked can never find their way because they are blind and hate the light. But the sons of God who are sent into the world are lighted that they may see and know. We who follow Him walk not in darkness. Second, he that follows shall have the light of life which goes with neither do I condemn you. This Light is the Light of life. In her case, she will not be stoned today! But in the broader sense, none of us are condemned because there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:1)! But the Pharisees dont believe Him:

The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

The Pharisees were legalists and so they applied the Law: You cant just say youre the Light of the world; you have to have a witness or its not true. But its sort of a stretch on their part because this wasnt a court proceeding. But its even worse because its false: John was a witness, the Father testified at the baptism, and the miracles were evidence to support His claims. There were a whole lot of other people who believed and also testified that this was indeed the Christ.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. It doesnt matter if they say Hes lying because they dont know what theyre talking about. Hes come from heaven and Hes going back there. He knows this but they dont:

Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

They wanted to see this woman executed for her sin and they condemn Christ because He didnt join them. But they dont understand true judgment and they dont understand His purpose. He didnt come to judge the world (that time is coming), but for now Hes here to save. And so when they bring her and they want to throw stones He shows grace because He is the Light of the world and the Light for this woman. He has given her life though she deserved death.

And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. 17It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. Even if the Pharisees had been correct in applying the Law to Him here Hes not out of order. He has a witness: its the Father who sent Him. But they cant stand to hear Him say this because they think they know His father :

Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. 20These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. Its not hard to picture their anger at His response. You dont know either of us; if you had known me you would know Him too. They know Hes talking about God, and they know He means they dont know God. So they badly want to kill Him but its not yet time.

Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. This builds on what He just said. They think they know God and they think they ll see His Kingdom, but they wont. If they hate the Light then they dont know the way because theyre blind. When they die, they will still be in their sins and unable to stand before the throne. But they dont know what He means:

Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. Theyre thinking of the earthly things again. They dont even catch the part about dying in their sins. They just want to know where He can go that they cant.

And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. This difference addresses their question but they dont know it. He ca n go back to heaven because Hes from there. He can be with the Father because He is from the Father and one with Him. But there is no way for us to come to the Father but through the Son because we are of the earth. This is what He means when He tells Nicodemus that he must be born again. This is what it means that He gave us power to be called the sons of God:

I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. They are guilty and there is only one Mediator and one Sacrifice. If they dont believe on Him they will die with guilt and then face judgment.

Then said they unto him, Who art thou?

Theyre perplexed. They really dont know Him and they cant figure Him out. And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. He is the Light of the world. He is the Son of God.

I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. 27They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

Jesus has a book full of their deeds and He could (and will) pass judgment on them. But the Father keeps His word: He has promised a Redeemer and this is Christs only purpose at the time. Hes not going to judge these men for now; He s here to seek and to save because that is the will of God.

Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. 29And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. The confirmation of what Hes telling them now will be given when He goes to the cross. The Savior truly hasnt come to judge the heathen as these Jews hope; He has come to save them. He is the suffering Servant.

As he spake these words, many believed on him.

What did they believe? They believed on the promised Christ as the sacrifice for their sins: Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto

death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors (Is. 53). Today we have this same hope, and we look to this same Savior. He is the Light of the world. He that follows Him shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. newgracebaptistchurch.wordpress.com
