NALMET 1689 Technology

for Soluble Metal Control

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION NALMET 1689 is a polymeric technology proven to be very effective in capturing and precipitating mercury and other heavy metals from solution. NALMET 1689 treats wastewater for mercury and other heavy metals removal as a single treatment process or for efuent polishing. NALMET 1689 has been effective in treatment of plating or surface nishing process wastewater, metals from incidental corrosion, incinerator or other scrubber water, ue gas condensate, groundwater, wastewater from metal-catalyzed or metal handling processes, cooling water blowdown, etc. The treatment program is a simple one or two-step program consisting of the heavy metal precipitation and often a occulant to enhance settleable oc formation. The NALMET 1689 polymer reacts with soluble metal ions to form insoluble complexes leading instant formation of large, easily settled oc. In some cases, additional occulant may be required for optimum settleability. The formation of settleable oc is essential to

COMPETITIVE COMPARISONS There are numerous advantages of the NALMET 1689 program over other chemical methods, as shown in the following comparisons: NALMET 1689 technology versus DTC, TTC, TMT, ferrous sulfate, and sodium sulde: 1. Eliminates need for coagulant 2. Better tolerance of variable wastewater 3. Lower aquatic toxicity than DTC or TTC 4. 75-90% reduction in occulant usage 5. 20-83% reduction in sludge volume 6. Excellent efuent clarity 7. Lower operator time/cost PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), SECTION 9, for the most current data.

the ultimate removal of metals, since the presence of colloidal particles in the nal efuent can result in unacceptable metals concentrations. A typical NALMET 1689 application treating metal plating wastewater is shown in Figure 1. When a occulant is needed to assist in formation of settleable oc, anionic products such as NALCLEAR 7768 technology are often used in NALMET programs. Typical dosage is 0.2 to 2 ppm. In wastewaters with high dispersancy, for instance, cooling water blowdown or photographic waste, a cationic occulant such as ULTIMER 7752 technology or OPTIMER 7196 Plus technology works well. Dosages may be as high as 30 ppm in some cases.

Form: Turbid liquid Color: Brown Odor: Sulfurous Specic Gravity@ 77F (25C): 1.1 - 1.35 Density: 9.2 - 11.2 lb/gal Solubility in Water: Complete pH (100%): 11.5 - 13 VOC Content: 0.00% DOSAGE AND FEEDING Hydrolytic Stability NALMET 1689 technology is unstable in water at low pH. Do not operate below pH 3 at any point where unreacted product may be present. The rate of decomposition is pH dependent, occurring within seconds in very acidic (pH 2) wastewater but slowly under alkaline conditions. Complete decomposition of 1 ppm of NALMET 1689 technology will produce 0.01 ppm of hydrogen sulde and 0.10 ppm carbon disulde.

NOTE: Carbon disulde is a ammable liquid that gives off ammable vapors; the vapors can form explosive mixtures in conned areas over a wide range of vapor/air mixtures: 1.3 to 50% by volume in air at 68F (20C). Misuse of NALMET 1689 technology in low pH wastewater could result in the formation of an explosive gas mixture in the headspace of the treatment vessel and should be avoided. The metal-NALMET 1689 technology precipitate is more stable in water than is the free product, so considerably less decomposition of reacted product occurs under acidic conditions. During application of NALMET 1689 technology at pH<7, however, some product decomposition may occur simultaneously with metal ion precipitation. Good mixing of NALMET 1689 technology with wastewater at the product feedpoint should decrease this decomposition. Also, NALMET 1689 technology overfeed (unreacted product) under acidic conditions will surely decompose and should be avoided. In some cases, ferrous sulfate can be used to scavenge unreacted product and prevent its decomposition.
