- Direct content and messaging of zoo publications, including developing and supervising the
production of publications to inform, guide, and educate the public, and promote the zoo’s
conservation and education achievements to colleagues and prospective donors.
- Leads the creation and editing of major printed pieces (annual report, periodicals sales kits),
smaller printed pieces (brochures, print advertisements, professional journal articles, etc.),
and zoo-exhibit interpretive signage.
- Manage editorial staff responsible for over 2,500 print, electronic, and video pieces annually,
including Annual Report (with external and internal designers), quarterly issues of a
membership magazine Zoo Views, over 200 zoo-wide internal communications annually, and a
wide variety of guest communications and in-park signage.
- Works closely with internal clients to plan communications to meet strategic goals, including
feature stories, brochures, inserts, education curriculum, husbandry manuals, exhibit signs,
interpretive signs, Zoo Chat materials, Ani-meal packaging, press releases, and advertising
materials.
- Works with Design Department to set production schedules, determine printing specifications
to ensure highest quality within budgetary guidelines, and to assure publications are produced
within established deadlines for major printed pieces.
- Responsible for internal communications including zoo-wide emails, voice mails, and weekly
electronic newsletter promoting a wide range of animal news, event listings, and
administrative information.
- Key member of Communications Group that meets weekly with participation from Editorial
Services, PR, and Web Services. Meetings have been instrumental in effectively
communicating story ideas and press timing for various communication vehicles (external
press, web site, Zoo Views, internal zoo-wide), and in exchanging information with various
Animal Program representatives.
- Write and edit CZS Annual Report with goal of promoting Development Department goals of
raising CZS profile with their targeted audience.
- Responsible for Conservation Connection newsletter for Conservation, Education and Training
(CET) Dept. focusing on CZS conservation programs, conservation practices at zoo, and home
conservation tips/references/links.
- Responsible for producing new “Safety Watch” e-newsletter for Life Safety Department,
including writing, editing, and logo design.
- Wrote and produced 30-second “Grocery TV” advertising spot featuring families enjoying
memorable zoo day.
